The doyenne of minimal reflects on Perlon, forgotten classics and the tracks that never leave her record bag in this live edition of Playing Favourites at Dimensions Festival. Following the minimal boom of the '00s and early '10s, the sound has in more recent years flourished quietly in the smaller corners of certain scenes. It certainly, as some people like to claim, never died. In fact, if you were to discuss this with Sonja Moonear, the Swiss DJ would argue that the genre is as popular as ever. Much like the other artists in the upper echelons of the scene—Zip, Raresh, Nicolas Lutz—Moonear made a name for herself by DJing rather than making music. She cut her teeth in Geneva as a resident at its key club at the time, Weetamix. Perlon label head Zip was a regular guest and, as Moonear recounts, he invited her to play in Berlin after she warmed up for him a few times. Moonear is now an in-demand DJ in her own right, with a style that takes in a broad cross-section of house, techno and minimal. Recorded at last summer's Dimensions Festival, this edition of Playing Favourites sees Moonear select some of her favourite '90s and early '00s minimal classics and the records that never leave her record bag. She's truly obsessed with music and finding rare grooves, and her enthusiasm shines through. In between playing tracks, she talks about the squat scene in Geneva and how she spends hours preparing her bag every week. She reminisces about the first time she put her hand on a turntable; her transition away from the piano as an adolescent; and her primary goal in her career, which is "purely to enjoy herself." @moonear ra.co/exchange/794

At the forefront of this scene is Yamen & EDA. Friends since childhood, the pair possess an almost telepathic understanding behind the decks and in the studio, a way of working that's brought them to the attention of some of contemporary house and techno's most renowned imprints and dancefloors. Having officially kicked off as a duo in 2011, Yamen & EDA's ascendency has been an impressive one. Theirs is a story however, that goes much further back. Raised on a solid musical diet of minimal house and techno, the pair's formative years were spent on the many dancefloors of the south of France, experiences that still inspire their music to this very day. Best friends and ardent musical lovers with a penchant for similar styles and techniques, it was only ever a matter of time before Yamen & EDA solidified their friendship through music. Quickly getting down to business in the studio, their inaugural releases hinted at great promise, eventually bringing them to the attention of One Records boss, Adam Shelton. Always keen to foster fledgling talent, Shelton has signed numerous Yamen & EDA releases to his imprint and even had the boys join him at One Records showcases in London at fabric, Sonar in Barcelona and at Below in Birmingham. The relationship is one that's since brought the pair to the attention of numerous other labels, with Earlydub and LAATE among those who've housed their talents. What's more, their music has been played along the way by some of the scene's foremost players, with Raresh, Petre Inspirescu and Apollonia all lending their support. 2018, however, is the year that Yamen & EDA are set to go it alone courtesy of their own Maison Mere label. A vinyl-only affair that kicked off recently courtesy of the auspicious ‘Retrospect' EP, the label promises to promote a wide range of contrasting electronic sounds. “A platform to collect and release music without any limits”, it's indicative of an altogether exciting new chapter in the already emphatic careers of Yamen & EDA. With further releases to come on John Dimas' always on-point Elephant Moon label as well as a return to One Records in the works, 2018 already looks set to be a defining year for one of France's most exciting duos. I hope you enjoy it. About Cr15tina About yourself: "Hello everyone. I am glad that I have the opportunity to share with you, the same feelings full of love, towards music! My name is Filip Cristina, I was born on the Black Sea and I come from the resort 2 Mai. As a child I had musical skills, I sang, I danced and I was attracted from an early age by the secrets of mixing. For several years I have been doing production, but I still have a lot to learn and I want to improve every day. Music for me, that's all! Love, Passion, Devotion, Patience, Creation, Energy, Light, Knowledge, for me and for the people I interact with, through her prism and not only! Music has transformed me into what I am now. A human who wants to share as much positive vibration and peace as possible, to create a more beautiful world with you!" Artist biography: Hailing from the capital of Romania, Bucharest, Cristina was born near the Black Sea shore in the holiday spot 2Mai, on April 19, 1987. She has lived into a childhood and adolescence of electronic music, as her father was an avid vinyl collector with an affection for electronica. At the tender age of 14 was the first time she stood behind the decks, learning the techniques and crafting her DJ skills, and shortly after she began playing at local summer club. Prompted by her interest in electronic music and restless creative spirit Cristina also attended and completed a singing school. In 2006 she moved to Bucharest getting involved in the Romanian capital's underground party scene. She got to play her first gig at the Zebra club in Bacau, where many artists who left their mark in the Romanian underground scene have originated and made their stamp. For the next decade, she was a regular at many of Bucharest's underground spots and became the resident of Silver after-hours club. After a short hiatus, Cr15tina remerged back into the scene, this time with an interest for producing and creating her own sounds, marked by strong feeling, and emotion. Her first EP, "Zbor Maiastru"(2016), was released by the label Arms Limited, followed by "Love Dimension" E.P (2017) released by the label Cisne Negro, and then her single for Rooftop Cardigans Sampler V.A. "Nu Zaietz Pagadi" (2017). Since 2017 she has joined forces with HighSound.Ro collective, an agency that promotes underground Romanian dj's, artists and music producers. I did not want to stick to the idea of a set having a beginning, middle and ending but tried to more or less create a feeling, something that I am usually searching every time I go to see some of my favourite artists playing. My set is a celebration of the digging that I have been doing for the past year or so, displaying some of my all-time favourite tracks. You can find new and old tracks in this set trying to unite two periods, the pre 2000s one, before I was born, and the one that I am living in right now, trying to make the most out of it. Enjoy :) About Koler Artist biography: A 19 year old music enthusiast trying to stretch the boundaries between minimal, deep house and techno music. An adept of the idea "good music I dance, no good music I not dance". My original influence was the Romanian minimal scene, but London definitely widens my taste for music, thus shifting a little bit to the deep house part of it. Nothing pre-planned, except for the idea of trying to take the dust off some older tracks to come up with a high energy set, and see how it goes. About Satto Artist biography: He started exploring electronic dance music towards the end of the 90's. What followed was a journey through various genres: from trance and progressive house, to minimal and techno. This led him to explore the Bucharest underground scene, booming at that time (2002 2006). 2006 marked the year when Satto decided to take the next step and start DJing himself, by throwing parties in his home town of Rm. Valcea. Satto contributed his unique style to the development of the small but enthusiastic local scene. In 2007 he won a bedroom DJ contest, organized by cubecast.net, clubbing mag and beatfactor.ro, and got to play alongside Raresh & Praslea. Following a break of a few years, he resumed his DJ career, happy to share his passion for music with friends and listeners. His sound sits somewhere between house and techno, with a heavy dose of darkness, spiced up with deep, hypnotic rhythms for good measure. Portfolio link: @satto Current city: Bucharest, Romania

His music is a warm-hearted journey that brings together the new and the old, a combination of today’s ro-minimal with older influences of minimal-techno, techno, deep house and others. Alin’s first encounter with electronic underground took place back in 2007 when he was in high-school. After two years of partying and discovering the underground skirts of music, he finally decided to start DJing and got a residency at the famous Zebra Club back in his hometown of Bacau, a venue of great inspiration for him and also the place where Raresh launched his career just a few years before. Here is where he met and played alongside the rising duo of NoiDoi (Barac & Dubtil), another great source of inspiration for Alin. As time went by he moved to Bucharest and started a series of parties in different locations throughout the city like For Friends, LaMansarda and many more. Other alternative playgrounds for Alin are located deep in the heart of the Carpathians (Inside Bar in Busteni) or at the Black Sea Coast (Molotov in Vama Veche). All this time he was lucky enough to share the decks with the likes of Barac, Dubtil, Priku, Lumieux, Gescu, Nu Zau, Mihai Pol, Suolo, Tulbure, Dragutesku, Ali Nasser and connected with many other talented artists from which he learned a lot and is very grateful for meeting each and every one of them. The Terrace Podcast Welcomes this weeks guest : Yousef with a very groovy set recorded live from Space Ibiza in the Carl Cox (Revolution Party) The new decade sees Yousef consolidating his status as an international DJ, Producer, Club Promoter and Music aficionado with ever greater impact. Running one of Europe's premier clubnights co-exists alongside manning a record label of the same name, whilst his reputation as a DJ grows with increasing stature and a constantly escalating global calendar. His productions continue to leave an indelible imprint on the world; the release of second artist album ‘Indigo Child', the follow-up to 2009's impressive LP ‘A Collection of scars and situations', is scheduled for later on in 2011. A hugely expansive collection much like its predecessor, it marks a return to Circus Recordings after Yousef took a twelve month sabbatical to work exclusively with a select band of record labels, including Saved, Cocoon, Harthouse, and Monique Musique. The return will be kick-started with the release of one 8 track EPs entitled ‘Yousef's Circus Reworks'. The focus is simple; transformations of several productions with the Circus dancefloor specifically in mind, Jamie T, Fourtet, Giles Peterson, Moby and Sven Vath among the producers contributing material for Yousef to re-jig alongside his own peerless ‘Come Home'. Each track represents a certain time of the night or certain room; painting a personal musical projection of what Circus means to Yousef and an ideological snapshot of the clubnight's musical DNA. The event is quite the beast. Now in its ninth year, it's quickly moved from being the best night in Liverpool to one of the most talked about and well respected soirees on the continent, the flagship for the refurbished and Funktion One equipped Masque. The high profile nature has seen shows with Planet E, Bedrock, Meganite and Teutonic techno institution Cocoon, not to mention a superlative collaboration with the BBC for the 500th Essential Mix. Loco dice, Pete Tong Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath, Ricardo Vilalobos, Laurent Garnier, Luciano, Carl Craig, Adam Beyer, John Digweed, Davide Squillace, Raresh, Dennis Ferrer, Heidi, Nic Fanciulli, Tim Green and countless others have all played for Yousef and his party in the last 12 months. Many more are slanted for future shows in 2011 and beyond as it nears an unprecedented ten years of rave carnage. And Yousef continues to push further ground as a DJ. 2011 will see his second year as one of the residents at Carl Cox presents... at Space, arguably the internationally renowned nightclub's finest party of the season. A recent tour of South America saw a consolidation of his status as one of the premier foreign DJs for the continent (a debut at Warung Beach a particular highlight), and he remains a huge draw from the sun kissed shores of Melbourne to Miami to the sweat soaked basements of Manchester and Munich. One thing's for sure; Yousef will continue to leave a huge personal footprint upon electronic music both behind the scenes and behind the decks of the world's finest clubs, whilst creating the musical soundtracks that pulsate through their clubber's ears. He simply knows no other w www.theterracepodcast.com
