Christian Ethics in a benefits SocietyExploring the Biblical Doctrine of WorkIn this talk, we attempt to establish a biblical basis for Christians to examine the important issue of work, and the place of work in our society. It's about the ethics of work, and the biblical doctrine of work, and about attitudes to work in our our nation. And that's where we start, for Christians are to live in a manner that is contrary to the prevailing culture in every respect. That includes our attitude to employment and to the current benefits culture. This episode was recorded at Templepatrick Reformed Church, and is reproduced here with their kind permission. Paul's Prayer Request.Text: Ephesians 6:19-20 – 2 Corinthians 12:9ffThe Christian has a ‘prayerful lifestyle' – a basic disposition to prayer, a heart that will turn to God for help in whatever circumstances, seeking His guidance and help, whatever might come our way. And we are to pray for others. So, having made that point, Paul now puts them to work, – admitting HE needs prayer and asking them to pray for him, in the difficult situation in which he finds himself. Just as the armour of God is a defence against satanic attacks, so prayer is our greatest weapon against the enemy. We too must be aware of the wiles of the devil. So what are Satan's devices? Of course we saw one of these last time, when we were reminded that Satan often allows us, in our foolishness, to trivialise him, – depict him as a harmless, silly red elf, or a Halloween monster… That's a deliberate tactic, to prevent us from realising the true danger. The Biblical Origins of the Family.Ephesians 5:33-6:1In this sermon, we look at the origins of the family in Genesis 2 and 3, and see God's purposes in creating a family unit, - man, woman, child/ren. We then explore how the fall of man destroyed everything, sin entered the world and the family paradigm of intimate innocence within God's purposes, was shattered by guilt, same and blame, and that led to death, and murder. Even then, God was not finished with the family, - and it into a family, a mother, and a stepfather, that he sent his only begotten Son, the Saviour of the world. We noted that the effects of sin on the family - disfunctionality and breakdown, and various perversions of the family, are legislated for and encouraged by the wicked governments that rule western nations, and because every national authority finds is source in, and is an extension of the family, - the breakdown of the family has led to the moral and spiritual breakdown and decline of society. Finally, we seek to find out what a Christian and biblical family should look like, and we learn that such a family is characterised by love, respect and discipline. This sermon was recorded at Templepatrick Reformed Church, and is used here with their kind permission. BONUS EPISODE: Prayer is the Answer!Speaking at TRC, Bob looks at the government's response to recent unrest and rioting in the UK, and seeks to understand what the underlying causes of that unrest might be. He suggests that there is a deep sense of unfairness in the population, which has already simmering tensions to rise to the surface and manifest itself in riot, civil disorder and violence.he sees no hope from politicians, whose stock in trade seems to be broken promises and downright lies. What can we do? There is only one course of action for the nation. That is for God's people to humble themselves enough to admit that we need to learn again the power of prayer, for prayer is the answer...if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14This message was recorded at Templepatrick Reformed Church, and is reproduced here with their kind permission. The Symbols of HeadshipA reason why the doctrine of headship in the church is so unpopular could be because of the symbols of headship, which have been ordained by God in the church. For men, the symbol of headship is that the head should be uncovered during worship, and for the female, the head should be covered during worship. Many people, - (many women.) do not like that. People's attitudes have varied from downright rebellion to outright hypocrisy. But what does the Bible say? 1 Corinthians 11:1-16 is the text we have to consider. It is about headship - and about glory - The GLORY of God, the GLORY of a man, the GLORY of a woman. The Doctrine of HeadshipColossians 1:15-22 & Ephesians 5:24ffBob digresses from his meander through Ephesians to emphasise the importance of a much neglected doctrine, - the Doctrine of headship. In this episode we look at the doctrine of Christ's headship over the church, which is mirrored in our marriages, and in the church also.1 Corinthians 11:3. But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. This is such an important doctrine that when Paul wrote to the Corinthians he established symbols of headship, to remind us of it when we meet. Why Does the Government Hate Prayer?Luke 11:1-4 In this talk, I want to establish two opposing propositions, and explore the dichotomy that exists between them. The most basic purpose of Christian intercessory prayer, is that God's will should be done in this world. James puts this succinctly in James 4:14-16 Regardless of what we pray for, our prayer should always be tempered with ‘if it be Thy will.' That is such a basic principle of prayer. We want what God wants, - we want his sovereign purposes to prevail and we surrender to his will. The opposite proposition is that the governments of this world, give no consideration to what God's will is in any national situation, and this is inevitably reflected in the laws that they pass and the regulations that they expect us to abide by.We proceed from those two basic working assumptions. This message was recorded at Templepatrick Reformed Church and is used here with their kind permission.Read the NOTES HERE Hosted on Acast. The Christian's Edifying SpeechEphesians 4:29Paul is still giving us specific examples of how the Christian life will look different from the lives of the pagan world all around, in the city of Ephesus. And there's another. Christians SPEAK differently. You should be able to recognise a Christian believer by the way that he or she speaks. Let's explore that idea in this sermon, preached at both Ballymacashon and Templepatrick Reformed Church, and recorded at TRC, - used here with their kind permission.Read the NOTES HERE. Be Angry!Ephesians 4:26-27Let's remember what's happening here in Ephesians 4. Paul has stated a general principle. It is this, “That a Christian should be different from the ungodly world.” Ephesians 4:17, 4:24, 24 Having stated that principle clearly, the Apostle now gives us another specific example of that and he deals with the subject of anger. This sermon was preached at both Ballymacashon and Templepatrick Reformed Church. It was recorded at TRC, and is reproduced here with their kind permission. Read the NOTES HERE. Hosted on Acast. Maturity, Integrity and UnityEphesians 4:13-16Paul has been reminding the Ephesians of the wonderful gifts that the risen and exalted Christ has given to the church, Grace and Growth and the precious Holy Spirit of God Himself. Being a believer, a member of the Body of Christ, is to KNOW Jesus, to have met him, and trusted him, and at the same time to BELIEVE in him, which will require a basic understanding of Christian teaching. So Paul insists that Jesus has given gifts to his church, through the Holy Spirit, for this reason: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, Paul is referring to our spiritual growth, as a result of Christ's gracious gifts to his church. Let's look at this principle. This sermon was preached at both Ballymacashon and TRC. Growing Old Like AnnaLuke 2:36-38 Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. The events of Bethlehem had passed, all happening in God's appointed time. Galatians 4:4Mary had given birth to her son, the promised baby, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost in the womb of a virgin. Jesus was eight days old when his parents brought him up to Jerusalem, as was customary among the Jews, for his ritual circumcision. Luke 2:21-23 It's at this point that Anna appears in the Temple courts, and there before her an old man is holding a baby, speaking to the baby's mother. Anna instantly recognised that this baby was different! He was the promised Messiah!Read the NOTESThis sermon was preached at both Ballymacashon and Templepatrick Reformed Church. Christian UnityEphesians 4:4-6In this passage Paul specifically teaches us more about that organic unity – the ‘bond of peace' that already exists among those who are truly his – those are are part of his kingdom through personal faith in Christ, having repented of their sins and trusted the Saviour. It seems to me that in this passage he uses the unity that exists within the Trinity – the Triune Godhead, to illustrate, and to epitomise the unity that should characterise Christ's body, the church. This sermon was preached at both Ballymacashon and Templepatrick Reformed Church. Christian CharacterEphesians 4:1-3Paul, as a prisoner of the Lord, for the gentiles, (Ephesians 3:13) urges the readers of his letter to live in a manner which reflects what God has done for them. THIS IS PERSONAL. It is our personal response to God's saving work within us. So Paul begins with a description of our Christian motives, our temperament as believers.
