My guest today is Kenneth Watson. He is a military vet, an author, and recently a father, but still insists his primary identifying marker is as an alcoholic. He had his first drink at about 6 years old, and remembers the first time he was drunk,.Kenneth was only 12 years old.  Alcohol surrounded most of his life in high school, college and the military. While it would have been easy to become a statistic, he sobered up, wrote a book and is sharing his story with the world with the intention of letting people know there is hope and help. He recently had a son whom he shamelessly brags about – don't we all! It is a wonderful, touching, hopeful story of overcoming adversity and standing for something.

Delivered by Father Peter Tukan, SDB from Salesian Don Bosco Gerak in the Diocese of Labuan Bajo, Indonesia. Hebrews 8: 6-13; Rs psalm 85: 8.10.11-12.13-14; Markus 3: 13-19 THE BEST CHOICE OF GOD   The theme for our meditation today is: The Best Choice of God. There are so many chosen persons who fully dedicate their lives to the mission entrusted to them by the Lord. According to the Letter to the Hebrews, God had made a big choice, namely to establish a new covenant in order to complete or perfect the old one which is proved incomplete. Jesus Christ our great high Priest was evidently present to mark the beginning of the new covenant.   Jesus Christ had made certain important choices meant to continue His work in the world, and in particular He acted directly on the election of His twelve apostles. His power and His sacred will were the main conditions for doing these choices. If He had ever used some human motivations or intentions of this world, the choices made should be only in favour of favouritism, political or social power, discrimination, and hostility.   God's choice is the best one because it follows the standard of holiness and honesty. His words addressed to the chosen people. It is just like a young man says directly his intention to the girl he loves so much: "I love you" and then all his attention goes to her. The words received work in such manner to convey a response, namely a definite answer of the chosen people to God's invitation and appointment. A choice will lose its beauty and meaning if it is not stated directly to the person or persons intended.   We were all made so special when this choice to each of us was sanctified by the holy baptism. It was indeed the sacrament of Baptism that has consecrated us. The other sacraments that we receive provide opportunities for us to be purified. We are indeed purified repeatedly through the sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation, and also through our acts of love. These are the means through which God truly anoints and purifies us.   God's choice is the best because those elected are filled with wisdom and power to uphold justice, truth and goodness. On this basis, every one of us is joined by Jesus Christ in His mission of making the Kingdom continues to stand and work. The Church after receiving the mandate directly from Jesus is obliged to assign us and accompany us with all supports.   When they were anointed as persons chosen, the apostles of Jesus were made qualified with all gifts of the Spirit mostly needed for their missions. There was none of those gifts for doing violence or evil acts. We the followers of Christ are joined in this mission to be the peacemakers and the apostles of happiness. Often times, only one evil deed can destroy all goodness that has been made and preserved. The word of God today should become our light to help us always persevere in our calling. Let us continue with every initiative and creativity in supporting our calling in the following of Christ. In doing so, our faith will be stronger.   Let's pray. In the name of the Father ... O Lord God almighty, fill us with the spirit of gratitude and generosity, so that we can serve You and our neighbours with generosity. Hail Mary full of grace ... In the name of the Fath er ...

Delivered by Father Peter Tukan, SDB from Salesian Don Bosco Gerak in the Diocese of Labuan Bajo, Indonesia. Judges 13: 2-7.24-25a; Rs psalm 71: 3-4a.5-6ab.16-17; Luke 1: 5-25 MIRACULOUS PREPARATION   The theme for our meditation today is: Miraculous Preparation. Preparation is the main theme of Advent. We have reflected on the great preparation as carried out by John the Baptist and Elijah. There is also a form of preparation that highlights God's justice with the King David, the results of which are manifested in the person of Mother Mary and Saint Joseph. Then today we are introduced to a form of miraculous preparation, with the main characters being Manoah's wife or Samson's mother, and John the Baptist's parents, Zachariah and Elizabeth.   We call it a miraculous preparation, and not just great, because it is close to a much more miraculous event, namely the birth of the Savior, which is already very near. The miraculous event in the lives of Mary and Joseph which is manifested in the birth of Jesus Christ, certainly must be anticipated by a miraculous preparation as well. And this miraculous preparation was the birth of Samson from his mother who was barren, as well as the birth of John the Baptist from Elisabeth who was also claimed to be barren. Zakariah, Elisabeth's husband, is also included in this circle of miracles.   If you dare to ask yourself, what miracle must be prepared to welcome the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ this year? Something magical always amazes or more precisely, something new that makes us wonder. However, having experience a special relationship with God does not have to be big and magnificent. Miraculous or wonderful thing doesn't have to be something extraordinary. Jesus Christ, who was born in simplicity, is enough to give us an idea that miracles are the experiences of finding light and answers about our lives in God.   Someone wrote on the social media wall about her family's miraculous preparation for this Christmas. "My youngest child, who is already a young man, over the last years has not been able to get along and agree with us, his parents. Just this past day he opened up and talked to us. We actually stopped at the exact place where our child was, so that our communication could be connected, the conversation would flow, and finally a solution to our problem could be reached. May this Christmas be a very beautiful experience in our family”.   This small sharing is a miraculous preparation, which of course will be aligned with the miracle of the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. We as individuals, families, and communities need to prepare miraculously or in a new way, in order to find that harmony and unity. If there is nothing miraculous or new experience, wouldn't the Christmas celebration be ordinary, without anything wonderful? Let us pray. In the name of the Father... O merciful God, make us individuals and families who can renew our lives through miraculous preparation for this Christmas. Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit... In the name of the Fath er...

Ķīnas un Eiropas Savienības attiecības turpina saasināties, it sevišķi tirdzniecības jomā. Reģiona līderu tikšanās Turkmenistānā. Aktualitātes analizē laikraksta "Diena" ārpolitikas komentētājs Andis Sedlenieks, Latvijas Transatlantiskās organizācijas ģenerālsekretāre Sigita Struberga. Sazināmies ar Latvijas TV žurnālisti Paulu Koškinu un RSU Politikas zinātnes doktorantūras vadītāju, Ķīnas Studiju centra direktori, Latvijas ārpolitikas institūta Āzijas programmas direktori Unu Aleksandru Bērziņu-Čerenkovu. Lietuva griež pa kreisi Pēc 13. oktobrī notikušās Lietuvas Seima vēlēšanu pirmās kārtas ir skaidrs, ka aptauju rādītāji nav melojuši un mūsu kaimiņvalsti gaida valdošo spēku nomaiņa un politikas pagrieziens vairāk vai mazāk pa kreisi. Pārliecinošās līderpozīcijas, kuras 2020. gada vēlēšanās ieguva konservatīvā partija Tēvzemes savienība – Lietuvas kristīgie demokrāti, sāka šķobīties jau drīz pēc vēlēšanām, un ap 2021. gada vidu valdošos konservatorus popularitātē apsteidza Lietuvas Sociāldemokrātiskā partija. Daudz labāk neklājās arī premjerministres Ingrīdas Šimonītes vadītās koalīcijas mazākajiem partneriem – Liberālajai kustībai un Brīvības partijai. Tajā pašā laikā turpināja kristies arī līdz 2020. gadam valdošās Zemnieku un zaļo savienības reitingi, un ja vēlēšanu laikā šī partija vēl bija otrā, tad 2022. gada vidū – tikai ceturtā. Šīm partijām zudušais politiskais kapitāls tika ne vien sociāldemokrātiem, bet arī 2022. gada sākumā kādreizējā premjerministra Sauļus Skverneļa dibinātajai kreisi centriskajai partijai Demokrātu savienība „Par Lietuvu!”. Visbeidzot šī gada sākumā Lietuvas politiskajā skatuvē uznāca vēl viens spēks – partija „Nemunas rītausma”, kura pati sevi raksturo kā kreisi centrisku, liberālu un kristīgu, taču politikas novērotāju apzīmēta visbiežāk kā nacionālistiski populistiska. Pavasarī piedzīvojusi strauju popularitātes kāpumu, kas, visticamāk, panākts, piesaistot līdz šim politiski inerto elektorāta daļu, vēlēšanu priekšvakarā „Nemunas rītausma” jau nepatīkami cepināja valdošo konservatīvo pakausi. Lietuvas vēlēšanu sistēma ir jaukta. 70 no 141 Seima deputāta ievēl proporcionālā balsojumā, savukārt atlikušo septiņdesmit vienu – vienmandāta apgabalos.

Years ago, Beth came up with the term “Overfunctioner” and frequently talks about this with clients and friends who tend to overwork, overperform, do more than their share, and frequently have trouble being on the receiving end of things. There are a variety of potential reasons that people overfunction, including perfectionism, childhood trauma, feelings of insecurity or inadequacy, feeling that love and approval is conditional, etc. Fath is passionate about helping people like this and today she shares a couple examples of people who worked through these issues and learned to love, value and protect themselves more and to exercise greater self compassion.  Listen to this episode and more: neverperfect.org Follow us on instagram @neverperfectpodcast Please rate and review this podcast.

Throughout history, the role of the father has been vital to the stability of their children. Fathers have been the cornerstones of their families and the communities. In modern times, the role of the father has been diminished as part of an intentional spiritual attack designed to weaken our families and the fabric of our nation. In honor of Father’s Day, we’re talking about the investment that we make in our kids. There are thousands of dollars and thousands of hours spent raising a kid to 18, but this week, we’re looking at a different kind of investment: what fathers say, display and pray. These three areas naturally define a child — whether positively or negatively.

Many of us grew up in a world where to join the military meant to serve our country. Baked into that ideological pie was a hierarchy where, the more special your operations, the more value you might have, at least on social media. Cameron Fath tells about how he joined the Ranger Regiment, what it was like to enter and then leave that arena, and where he has been since, whether it be helping homeless veterans or building a Netflix Documentary: Toughest Forces on Earth. Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise

Have you noticed that some people feel called to put themselves in the middle of conflict? Sometimes those of us are transitional or interim pastors can find ourselves there. I have seen some people run from it and others run to it. I feel that I am some place in between the two. My husband and I were members of a church where I began being the director of the contemporary group. We did worship every Sunday. The pastor retired and he had not dealt with conflict the entire time that he was there. 2 Interim pastors came. One took the regular pastoral responsibilities, and he ran from conflict and the other did the transition work and she ran to it. I did my best to only observe. The transitional pastor actually helped form and put together the training for the intentional interim pastors. One needs to understand that there will be conflict and disagreements. It takes the ability to separate out yourself and set boundary lines. One needs to have the ability to listen to all people. Conflict is normal and you have experienced it here. It is interesting what we chose to dig our heels in on. Often we have the support of our families in our individual lives when we experience conflict. In our Gospel lesson today, Jesus did not. He was causing such a stir among the church leaders that his family felt he was making them look bad. His family did not understand at this point who he really was and what he had been called to do. Maybe you have had a family member at one time, or another pull you aside and ask you if you really wanted to die on this hill. Depending on how you felt about it, you may have considered it and backed down or felt your were called to continue. Jesus' family were to the point that they wanted to restrain him and probably take him home as people thought he was crazy. Then came the church leaders who put him in league with the ruler of the demons as Jesus had been casting out demons. Jesus of course challenged them and asked them, “How could satan cast out satan?” If one is casting out the other, the house is divided and will fall. If satan has risen up against himself, how can he stand? Jesus had reduced the church leaders thinking to absurdity. He goes on to say that if anyone enters a strong person's house, the strong person being satan,  cannot take their property unless they are tied up. Jesus is separating himself from satan by saying that he is stronger than satan. He becomes bolder and says that everyone's sins are forgiven except those that put he and satan in league together. The Greek word translated never here is not a good translation as recent scholars have felt it is misleading. Jesus has always said that forgiveness is for all, but it needs to be received. If satan does not give forgiveness and one equates Jesus with satan, why would you be looking for forgiveness. In a sense Jesus now turns on his family as when they came to call him out and probably expect to take him home, Jesus asks the question, “who is my family?”. I'm sure this threw everyone for a loop. He then said to them my family are those who do God's will. Of course this could have included his biological family. What is Jesus trying to teach in all of this turmoil and misunderstanding? Could it be that Jesus is trying to tell all of them and us that not everyone will agree or understand what Jesus is saying and doing? Jesus is describing what the beloved community looks like. There are many different variations on this picture, but in the end not everyone will see things the same way. We will have many misunderstandings. Messages will not always be clear. What one sees may be different from another and the interpretations can be different. Does this sound familiar? Ramona described a church that she belonged to that ended up closing. But through the years, even though there were many different ways of thinking, they worked together to try and move the church forward. It wasn't meant to be and I'm sure there were many disagreements and misunderstandings, but they stayed together until it was a congregational decision to close before all of the resources were gone. They chose then to share their resources with other ministries. This is what beloved community is about. Jesus calls us into beloved community. We all come from different places. Our experiences are different. Jesus calls us to listen to each other. When we make things about what I want, it is very easy to miss what Jesus wants. I always try to think about what is best for the community and sometimes I fail at this. The beloved community has a place for everyone, yet it is not about conformity. Thus, when we say we want to grow and new people come through the doors, I would anticipate new ideas and we are called to try and welcome the people and their ideas. If people do not experience this welcome, they will stop sharing their ideas and find a place that will welcome them and hear their ideas. Growth does not come by doing things the same way all the time. One of the directions that has come out of our conversations this past year is to provide opportunities to connect directly with and serve the community. Faith has some great ministries to serve the community, but how is Faith directly connecting with the community. What opportunities are being provided for this direct connection? One opportunity to connect directly with the community is being offered by the RIC committee. On Pride Day in Meridian Township on August 10, there will and ecumenical Pride service in the morning. In the late afternoon we will again have a table at the Market Place on the Green Pavilion. We will be asking for volunteers to be available at the table to give things out and have information about Faith Lutheran Church. It will also be a time that others can experience the welcome that we have to offer. Connecting with the community can bring in new people, backgrounds and ideas. This seems to be what has been spoken, but are there any measurable goals to make this happen? I understand this takes time, money and effort. The question becomes how is God calling Faith Lutheran Church to directly connect with the community? The transition team will be recommending to the council to develop a measurable goal as to discern how God wants Fath to directly connect with the community. Since not a great deal of this is happening right now, there will be new things to do. Today we will be burning the mortgage to the property that we just sold. Eventually the hope is that apartments will be built. This can create opportunities for Faith to directly connect with the community. Beloved community is about seeing Christ in other people. We know that is not always easy to do. This takes work, humbleness and intention. Being in beloved community means change. Jesus is reminding us today that he calls each one of us into beloved community. Sometimes it gets messy. This is when we need to keep our eyes on Jesus. Messiness causes us to have make decisions that are not easy. Jesus says make them for the sake of the community. At the heart of beloved community is agape, sacrificial love. Jesus demonstrated what that looked like in the way he lived his life. When we are feeling uneasy, angry or uncertain, we can remember that we are not alone in the messiness of life. Jesus walks with each one of us because he loves us. Let us pray: God of chaos and peace, there are times in our lives and the life of our beloved community that things get messy. Jesus reminds us today that this is normal. It doesn't always make us feel comfortable, but we thank you that you don't leave us to fend for ourselves. In our beloved community, we ask that your Holy Spirit would continue to lead and guide us. Give wisdom and guidance to our leaders as move forward. In Jesus' name. Amen

Israel Wright is a former Green Beret and Cameron Fath is a former US Army Ranger. They are the hosts of the Pop Culture Field Manual Podcast. Israel shares his bad jumps and close calls with death, while Cameron goes over his choice for the best Army Ranger unit—his very own 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.    Israel and Cameron then talk about pop culture and how this unites people regardless of their differing viewpoints on politics, religion, or anything else. They started the Pop Culture Field Manual Podcast to engage listeners based on this principle. Today, out of uniform, they continue to take the spirit of their experiences and celebrate them with their growing community.       Check out the Pop Culture Field Manual Podcast:  Website: https://pcfm.buzzsprout.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/PopCultureFieldManual Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pcfmpodcast/?hl=en   Join the SOFREP Book Club here: https://sofrep.com/book-club         See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
