A rusting steamship floats quietly in the waters of Homebush Bay, just outside Sydney. Once used to carry coal and wartime supplies, the SS Ayrfield was long ago abandoned… but never dismantled. Over time, the steel hull softened. The tides shifted. And one day, a mangrove seedling found its way into the empty hold – and stayed. In this episode, we drift gently through the story of a ship turned forest. We'll explore how nature returns through patience, how roots can take hold in the most unlikely places, and how even what we leave behind can become something beautiful. Let this quiet tale carry you into rest – a slow journey through rust, memory, and the soft persistence of green things. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Millions of years ago, iguanas somehow got from North America to Fiji. Scientists think they made the trip on a raft of fallen vegetation. Also, the marine reptile's fossilized fetus is cluing paleontologists into the lives of ancient sea creatures.Ancient Iguanas Floated 5,000 Miles Across The PacificIf you picture iguanas, you might imagine them sunbathing on hot sand in the Caribbean or skittering around the Mojave Desert. But far, far away from where these iguanas are found is another group of iguanas living on the islands of Fiji and Tonga in the South Pacific—closer to New Zealand than the Americas. And it raises the question: How in the world did these iguanas end up all alone, on the other side of the ocean? In a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in March, scientists suggest that millions of years ago, iguanas hitched a ride on a raft and accidentally sailed all the way across the ocean before washing ashore and starting a new life. Host Flora Lichtman discusses the iguanas' intrepid adventure with lead author Dr. Simon Scarpetta, evolutionary biologist and assistant professor at the University of San Francisco in California.Meet Fiona, The Pregnant Icthyosaur FossilIn the Patagonia region of Chile, Torres del Paine National Park is a graveyard of ichthyosaurs—ancient, dolphin-like reptiles that roamed the oceans when dinosaurs dominated the land. Nearly 90 of these giant reptiles' fossils have been found amongst the glaciers. But the standout in the bone heap is Fiona, an ichthyosaur that lived 131 million years ago. She's in pristine condition, the only fully preserved ichthyosaur in Chile. And, she died pregnant. She's teaching paleontologists about the evolution of her species. And some of those findings were recently published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. Host Flora Lichtman talks with lead author Dr. Judith Pardo-Pérez, paleontologist at the University of Magallanes in Chile.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. GIFT'S FROM THE EDGE, Lessons from the Other Side, is a continuing journey into spiritual self discovery and awakening through dream experiences and communication with passed loved ones, who are now her patient teachers. Follow Claudia's lifetime quest for knowledge of the life-after-life phenomenon. Her father's death at sixteen served as a catalyst, creating an unquenchable thirst for more pieces of the proverbial spiritual puzzle. She shares her own tragic earth-death experience during childbirth at the age of thirty when she lifted into an entirely different place of complete peace. Her detailed account of dying and the gifts she received upon coming back, took years for her to fine tune into crystal recollection. Through her journaled dream sessions, Claudia shares detailed accounts of Spirit School teachings and visions and shares her gradual ability to both hear from and contact the dead. Her delivery is much like a great conversation with someone you care for and trust. "The veil between our worlds is no more than a curtain with a drawstring, and Claudia has pulled back that drawstring, and feels compelled to share all she has learned from her lessons from the Other Side."BioBesides writing books, Claudia is a working realtor in her home state of Utah, having lived in Colorado Springs for many years where she served as a hospice volunteer, the job she claims was the hardest and most rewarding of her life. She is a popular speaker and member of the IANDS community, serving as a speaker/moderator in 2020 and has been chosen again to speak at the International conference in the fall of 2021. She enjoys doing podcast interviews which are available for viewing on her website, claudiaedge.com and has many books to write before she will return to the wonder of her NDE experience. In the meantime, she enjoys spending as much time as possible with her family and her grandchildren who bring her life's most ultimate joy.WE TOUCHED HEAVEN joins the collection of the award winning series GIFTS FROM THE EDGE, and debuted as #! in NEW RELEASES Her books are a compilation of her journaled lucid dreaming of her visits to what she calls ‘Spirit School' where she is able to converse and learn from her guide, sister and mother who now reside in the afterlife, and have been instrumental in her journey into understanding what goes on beyond the veil, and the wonders of Earths future.Join Claudia as she vividly shares her NDE, earth-death in 1984, and the resulting explorations into the unknown.https://www.amzn.com/dp/B081VSJWGX/https://claudiaedge.com/ https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlife
This Day in Legal History: Fugitive Slave Act SignedOn September 18, 1850, U.S. President Millard Fillmore signed the Fugitive Slave Act into law, a key and highly controversial component of the Compromise of 1850 and a dark moment in American history – unfortunately, one among many in the 19th century. The Act required that escaped slaves, even if they had reached free states, be captured and returned to their enslavers. It also imposed heavy penalties on anyone who aided a fugitive slave, including fines and imprisonment. Disturbingly, the law authorized federal marshals and local law enforcement to arrest individuals based on little more than a slaveholder's claim, placing free Black men and women at risk of being falsely accused and sold into slavery. The Fugitive Slave Act enraged abolitionists and free states in the North, who viewed the law as a gross infringement on their legal sovereignty and moral principles. Northern citizens were now legally obligated to participate in the enforcement of slavery, a practice many detested. Conversely, slaveholders in the South celebrated the law as a victory, seeing it as essential for the preservation of their economic system. This deepened the divide between North and South, escalating tensions that would eventually lead to the Civil War. The Act's passage not only exposed the fragility of compromises between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions but also galvanized the abolitionist movement. It showed how far the federal government was willing to go to protect the institution of slavery, making resistance increasingly inevitable. In a piece I wrote for Forbes, I weighed in to a tax policy proposed by former President Donald Trump. Floated by Trump at a rally in Arizona, the "No Tax on Overtime" policy aims to eliminate income tax on overtime pay, echoing a previous proposal to end taxes on tips. While the policy is presented as a way to relieve tax burdens on hourly workers, a closer analysis reveals several potential issues. By creating a tax-free incentive for overtime, the policy could favor workers able to put in extra hours, leaving others—like working parents—disadvantaged. This could deepen income inequality, as those unable to work overtime would continue paying taxes on their standard wages, while others benefit from a lighter tax burden. Additionally, employers may shift compensation structures to push for longer working hours, leading to lower base wages and a culture of overwork. Implementation of the policy would also create administrative challenges for employers and the IRS. Instead of targeted tax breaks, broader reforms like increasing the federal minimum wage might better address wage inequities without distorting the labor market.‘No Tax On Overtime' Policy Would Be Even Worse Than ‘No Tax On Tips'In the first 10 days of Kamala Harris's presidential campaign, lawyers contributed more to her than they did to Donald Trump's campaign over nearly two years, according to Federal Election Commission (FEC) data. Harris received nearly $8.3 million from around 26,000 contributions from individuals listing "attorney" or "lawyer" as their occupation after Joe Biden endorsed her in July 2024. In comparison, Trump's campaign, which began in November 2022, raised about $6.88 million from lawyers over that entire period. Lawyers have historically favored Democratic candidates, with Harris's and Biden's campaigns together raising significantly more from the legal profession than Trump's campaign. In previous elections, Democratic candidates like Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Joe Biden have all received much more financial support from lawyers than their Republican counterparts. The data reflects a broader trend where large law firms and individual lawyers increasingly lean toward Democratic candidates.Lawyers Give More to Harris in 10 Days Than Trump in Entire RaceDonald Trump recently pledged to restore the state and local tax (SALT) deduction, a tax break he limited during his presidency as part of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. In a post on Truth Social, Trump promised to reverse the $10,000 cap on SALT deductions, which has disproportionately impacted residents in high-tax areas like New York, especially in suburban areas where property values are high. The cap was initially supported by Republicans as it helped balance tax cuts elsewhere in the law. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized Trump's reversal, pointing out that Trump himself had imposed the cap. Repealing the limit could add an estimated $1.2 trillion to the cost of extending the tax law. Trump's focus on this issue, particularly in Long Island, reflects the area's significance in ongoing battles for control of the U.S. House of Representatives.Trump Pledges to Restore SALT Write-Off, Tax Break He Curbed (1)Yesterday, on September 17, 2024, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed two bills designed to protect actors and performers from unauthorized use of their digital likenesses by artificial intelligence. One bill mandates that contracts specify when AI-generated replicas of a performer's voice or image will be used, requiring the performer to have professional representation in contract negotiations. The other bill prohibits the commercial use of digital replicas of deceased performers without consent from their estates. These laws respond to growing concerns in the entertainment industry about AI's potential to exploit performers' likenesses without permission, part of broader fears about AI's ethical and legal implications.California governor signs legislation to protect entertainers from AI | Reuters This is a public episode. Ann Brauer's work has been featured in numerous museums, institutions and private collections including the American Museum of Art + Design, the Lodge at Turning Stone in Verona, NY, the Federal District Courthouse in Springfield, MA and Pat Metheny. When born on a farm in Illinois, her grandmother made a postage stamp quilt made from feed sack cloth which Ann slept under for years and always found different patterns and fabrics she used to create the overall design. She sewed her first doll dress at 5 and made it known to her mother that to spend time together, they would have to do so at the local fabric shop. Ann quit sewing in college, then took it up again after graduation. Working as a lawyer post education she used some quilting techniques to write complex citations! She has won numerous awards, been featured in myriad publications and had created several commissioned pieces. (2:28) Ann tells us about the special quilt her grandmother made for her when she was born. (3:17) She sewed her first doll clothing at 5 years of age with the help of a family friend and shares that story with us.(4:02) In high school Ann created costumes for musicals…she tells us about her favorite costume creations and why she chose to do this. And then…there was 4H! (5:42) Ann loved to create from Vogue patterns…the challenge was so much fun, but she didn't wear her creations. (6:57) After college Ann took to quilting as she would hang out in the fabric shops in Boston's Chinatown. It was her roommate that got her going. And, her first quilt…an Ohio Star! (8:44) What's her favorite quilt? (10:00) While practicing law, Ann used quilting techniques to prepare her briefs. She explains this unusual approach. (11:46) At age 30, Ann found a cabin, moved there and decided to see if she could support herself as a quilt maker. How did that work out for her? Find out here! (17:20) Ann talks about life and quilt creation during the Art Quilt movement and described her quilts which are on display in various museums. (19:43) How did the events of 9/11 affect hew work? It definitely increased the traffic into her studio. (21:01) Ann tells us why she chose to locate her studio in Shelburne Falls, MA. (22:44) Tropical Storm Irene managed to uproot Ann's beloved studio and float it down the river. Ann was out of town as was her husband…she wasn't worried. But then she got the phone call. (30:22) So, what's Ann creating today?! And what's next? (32:19) What's her dream? You can reach Ann at www.annbrauer.com and on Instagram @Annbrauerquilts. February 21, 2024 I floated my 80,000th horse this week since my first one in May 1983. I include horses I helped in training others and a low estimate of the numbers I did from 1983 to 1997. So, if you want to be picky, you can reduce this to about 65,000 horses. But this podcast isn't about me and the enormous amount of horses I've seen for dental care. It is, instead, a call for help for the profession to start listening to horse owners who want their horses treated with respect and themselves fairly. They want dental care for their horses based on evidence, on one hand, and on the other hand, what is in the best interest of their horses. There will never be randomized, controlled studies with enough horses and without bias done over long enough periods to answer, with a reasonable degree of specificity, the questions asked by horse owners: is what we do necessary and not harmful? We do, however, have anecdotal evidence that has accumulated over a long time with many horses: 80,000 horses in 41 years. The purpose of this podcast is to say that while there is no proof of the causation of specific dental conditions in horses, abundant observations show strong correlations. With the AVMA pronouncing February as Pet Dental Month, horses (and all farm animals) are not mentioned. This absence is not encouraging. Many horse owners want an alternative to what their veterinarian offers for the dentistry of their horses. I worry that the horses will go with no dentistry if they decline the advanced dentistry techniques of the veterinarians, who cannot offer both styles. This decision may not be an issue with the declining number of veterinarians electing to work with horses.

It is the United States' Jupiter return aka USA! The shoddily built Portland suburb existed for six years. In that time, it spawned Portland State University and helped bring ethnic diversity to the state. Few people realize how important the place really was.
