This episode is a mish mash of topics, with quite a bit of BS thrown in! We talk about the new GTN show that has recently launched, super exciting! We talk about the Vuelta, and about how the potential for issues coming from both sides of having a consistent and dominant winner in cycling, and how it compares to other sports. Outside.com had an interesting article about the decline of road cycling, partly due to the fragmentation of the sport and the high cost of entry to the sport. Finally, another hit to multisport with the closing of TriSports.com which comes as a bit of a shock, and very sad news.
Meaghan Nana-Sinkam is back filling in again while Randy and his family are in Mexico. This week the discussion revolves around the risk and rewards of going public with fears and successes, like in blogs and podcasts, as well as talking about becoming addicted to race sign-ups, even when you cannot be ready, and the fear of missing out (FOMO). Meaghan Nana-Sinkam joins John as a guest co-host this week to talk about functional fitness and how is it different or similar to Crossfit. They also discuss the two races John has been in since the last show (Clermont Series 5K and the Picnic Island Adventure Run) How the Shakeology shakes are working as far as energy and weight loss A bit more about Infinitus. Are calling trails in Florida and trails in Vermont the same name making any sense. The fine line between negativity and reality. Some discussion about the direction Meaghan has been going in her training, her accidental acquiring of a coach, and trying to PR a mile. Some noticing of the sentiment in the recreational runner community that there's more respect the longer you run and some disdain for short races. We both challenge that. Do people think that Usain Bolt is less deserving of respect than Meb? Or what he does is easier than what Meb does? Remember to join the Endurance for Everyone blogs and Facebook page. Phentermine was in the news a few years ago but is still being used by doctors to help patients get a handle on weight loss issues when diet and exercise have not proved to be enough. Randy is currently on this medication and he will share his thoughts, how it is affecting him, and any concerns he had going into the program. More discussion on weight loss help in the form of supplementation, meal replacement, or surgery, ensues after that with the underlying question of "when does it become time to seek medical intervention?". The Endurance for Everyone Tribe have been talking about this subject on and off for quite a while, so it is about time the show addressed it. Have you sabotaged your training and racing by your own actions, or thoughts? I think most of us have at some point. So, let's talk about it a little tonight ... PLACING STRICT EXPECTATIONS ON YOUR PERFORMANCE LEAVING SELF-CONFIDENCE TO CHANCE WORRYING TOO MUCH ABOUT RESULTS OR OUTCOMES MISINTERPRETING PRE-RACE JITTERS WORRYING TOO MUCH ABOUT WHAT OTHERS THINK STRIVING TO PERFORM PERFECTLY Special Thanks to TrainingPeaks for the inspiration... Ironman has relaxed a few and tightened a few rules up, so before the season get's into full swing the boys will review them for you, so you are aware, and can't blame them. :-) Do you need a race in front of you to get motivated to train? John does. Critical Swim Speed (CSS) is a great tool for training in the pool, but how do you find it and how do you use it? Remember to join the Fat Slow Triathlete blogs and Facebook pages. John tried hard for a while but has to say something SLIGHTLY political this week, and no it's nothing you'll get angry about. The PHIT Act was reintroduced to congress in March and it is something as athletes everyone should be on board with. Write/Call your congressman and get this passed. Talk about pre-race fueling and some methods to try out if you're someone that deals with a nervous stomach in the morning or pre-race. If this is an issue for you, what do you do? The E4E Facebook group got into a few discussions this week; around Protein needs and about blister prevention. We still have a LONG way to go to meet the 50 shirt minimum at the Booster page, so get your request in and let's see if we can get to the point we need to get to and get these shirts out on the street. A lot of discussion in the group this week about time management for those member working 12+ hour shifts ( we seem to have a lot of doctors/nurses/first responders in the group). John and Randy talk a little about that subject as well as get into the Principles of Training (used liberally from Joe Friel's writings). Workout of the Week is a swimming session from Randy. And good luck to those that give it a shot: 400 Warm Up as 100 paddles and buoy, 200 swim with fists, 100 easy 100 Hard - 30 sec rest 200 Hard - 30 sec rest 300 @ IM pace - 30 sec rest 300 Hard - 30 sec rest 200 @ IM Pace - 30 sec rest 100 @ IM pace - 30 sec rest 100 Hard - 30 sec 200 Hard - 30 sec 300 @ IM pace 200 Hard - 30 sec rest 100 Hard - 30 sec rest 200 Cool down as 200 easy We still have a LONG way to go to meet the 50 shirt minimum at the Booster page, so get your request in and let's see if we can get to the point we need to get to and get these shirts out on the street. Since John and Randy could not get their schedules in synch this week (John's fault this time) we dug deep into the archives of IM YEAR ONE/BACK OF PACK ENDURANCE and found a great episode with Chris Valenti that still seems relevant today. The Fat Slow Triathlete and Endurance for Everyone tribe is still relatively new, so hopefully this will not only be interesting to you all, but also shows how far we have come in this podcasting thing (especially John). The music this week is some serious 80's hair metal with Kix singing "Cold Blood" moving up a couple of decades for P!nk and her "Trouble" Remember to join the Fat Slow Triathlete blogs and Facebook pages. Randy is back this week and joins John to talk about the importance of sleep, how it can affect your weight loss and training, and ways to fix and adapt to a natural circadian rhythm. The ongoing drama of John vs. Feet is also discussed, and is becoming quite the issue as the 100 mile run gets closer and closer. John goes it alone this week and attempts to make it a listenable experience by going through his recent training plans, issues he is having with recurring pain in the ankles and feet, and in line with the way he writes in his blog, comes clean with some of the doubts creeping into his psyche and how he is tring to deal with it but having little talks with himself at night. John returns from his first journey into the trail running world with tales of amazement ... this is a MUST listen (or you can read about it in the blog HERE). Then Super Fan Tabitha Hill took the time to send us a list of questions on recovery, choosing a race, and what to eat after a race that they guys are more than willing to give their opinions on. Technical difficulties aside (near the end) it is a great episode for the whole family. And let us know what you think about the new OUTTRO (yes, that means you have to listen all the way through!)
