This year we have highlighted several runners who have logged incredible achievements in longer distance events at a young age. Remember Lauryn Wojcik, who had never raced longer than 6K and yet crushed the Leadville Trail 100? This next performance caught my eye, and the guy is right in my backyard. Boulder-based Charlie Lawrence last month broke the 50-mile world record previously held by veteran ultrarunner and current UTMB champion Jim Walmsley. Charlie is 28, self-coached, and his previous longest run had been 35 miles. He completed the distance in 4:48:21 at the Tunnel Hill 50 Mile in Illinois, averaging 5:46 per mile. I like that Charlie didn't run it on a track or in an artificial environment, but in an actual race, on a mostly gravel surface with some hills. Charlie, a native of Foley, Minn., got the inspiration to challenge the record, which he was actually confident he would secure, from American two-time Olympian Des Linden after helping pace her to a 50K world record. After sitting out most of 2022 with a sacral stress fracture, Charlie left his running group and set out on his own, upped his volume into the 140 miles per week range, and added some beastly track workouts as well. Charlie, who will line up to run the Olympic Trials Marathon this February, feels that the speedwork he does for 26.2 miles definitely helps him at longer distances as well. It's a fun story as Charlie rose from a decent high school runner who took two Minnesota state titles in the 3200 meters, to being a contributing all-Big Ten performer for the University of Minnesota, to being good enough to run in the Olympic Trials marathon in 2020 yet not threaten to make the team, to busting through with a world record at a totally new distance for him. We hit on everything here including his pacing strategy, his fueling, his extraordinary focus, his upcoming goals, and even the stories behind his tattoos. He's a really nice and engaging guy, so I hope you enjoy this!Charlie LawrenceInstagram @lawrence_charBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

Professional distance and marathon runner Neely Spence Gracey has been a competitive runner since she was in her teens and running has been a part of her life since she was born: both of her parents were competitive runners, and her father was an internationally competitive marathoner. In recent years, however, Neely's running focus and motivation has shifted, in large part because she began to balance new priorities. In addition to remaining committed to being an elite level competitor, Neely wanted to become a mom. This story follows Neely's running career from the high highs of her phenomenal 2016 debut in the marathon, through to today, including becoming the mother of two boys, Rome and Athens. Her journey has been full of ups and downs, but as the uncertainties that come with pregnancy, postpartum, and breastfeeding have come to pass, Neely finds herself appreciating running in new ways and finding competitive fun in unexpected places. Along the way, Neely has set a world record in the stroller mile, she's had some epic races at Disney World, and she's earned her way into Olympic Trails Marathon, which will happen February 3, 2024. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 14th August. It's  Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. From Jim in Toledo, Ohio You explained how aerodynamic the boulder teardrop camper is, but I think you failed to mention that it has a bank of batteries to help recharge an EV while on the road. 75kWh battery. RIMAC NEVERA CLAIMS QUICKEST PRODUCTION CAR WITH NEW QUARTER-MILE TIME - The Tesla Model S Plaid has a claimed 9.23-second quarter-mile time. But the real king appears to be the Rimac Nevera, which is getting quarter-mile times in the 8-second range. - The company set its fastest time yet this week at Famoso Raceway. The company brought out Brooks Weiselblat of DragTimes to record and drive the car. As such the company has timing from the drag strip as well as VBox data from onboard the car. The fastest time recorded was 8.582 seconds at 167.51 mph. - Now, as it was a drag strip, the times were set with a VHT-prepped surface, which is sticky and good for launches. But the car was on production tires — Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires to be specific. The company also noted that it has managed to do an 8.62-second quarter-mile on an un-prepped airstrip. - Without any sanctioning body to record these runs, this is only an unofficial record. Registrations for EVs more than doubled, with 214,111 on the books through June, up from 98,351 in the first half of 2020. - Tesla vehicles made up two-thirds of all new EV registrations, with the closest competitor being Chevrolet. - newly launched Mustang Mach-E electric SUV helped it move into the top three, with 5.6% of new registrations. That's an impressive pace, given it's Ford's first mainstream EV. - EVs still only accounted for 2.5% of all new registrations. That's up 1% from this time last year, but a far cry from the Biden administration's goal to make half of all new cars sold EVs by the end of this decade. Charging-network operator EV Charging Solutions (EVCS) plans to upgrade Oregon's 44 charging stations along the route with new hardware, and add three more, with funding from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), the company announced Wednesday in a press release. - 11 will be designated "super stations," each with one 150-kw fast charger and two 50-kw fast chargers, plus one 7.7-kw Level 2 AC port, EVCS clarified to Green Car Reports. The remainder of the 36 stations will get new hardware but remain at 50 kw - Upgrades will include replacing CHAdeMO-only DC fast-charging stations with ones that can accommodate both CHAdeMO and the Combined Charging Standard (CCS). A CHAdeMO adapter for Tesla drivers will also be included at each site Original Source : https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1133200_west-coast-electric-highway-10-years-old-new-charging-hardware DUTCH LEAD CHARGE FOR ELECTRIC CAR STATIONS - They are best known for bike-riding, but the climate-vulnerable Dutch are leading the way for electric cars with the largest number of charging stations in Europe.Teslas and other vehicles can be seen plugged in on practically every street corner thanks to a network of some 75,000 stations -- nearly a third of the entire EU total. - Around one in every five of the 400,000 new cars sold annually in the Netherlands is now electric, due partly to tax breaks and other incentives during the last decade. But the Dutch government has also ensured that drivers have the infrastructure to support efforts to kick the addiction to fossil fuels. - The Dutch government wants all new cars to be electric from 2030 in the Netherlands, where road traffic accounts for a fifth of greenhouse gas emissions. - The Dutch began to encourage electric cars "very early", in 2012, far sooner than Paris or Berlin - In addition to the 75,000 public charging stations, around 190,000 Dutch people have their own charging post at home. - Around 30 percent of Europe's electric vehicle charging points are in the Netherlands, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association. - In towns, every electric car user has the right to a charging station within 200 metres of their home; while in the countryside motorists have their own posts, with 75 percent of those generating electricity for them by solar power. The e-mobility specialist Quantron AG supports IKEA in this mission and supplies the IKEA logistics centre near Vienna with 30 environmentally friendly e-vehicles. This changeover will enable around 117,000 deliveries to be made emission-free in the first year alone, reducing CO2 emissions by more than 300 tons. - With a range of at least 170 km, drive power of 100 kW and maximum charging power of 70 kW, the e-transporters are ideally equipped for routes between IKEA locations and customers' delivery addresses. Initially, the vehicles will be used for deliveries to all 23 of Vienna's municipal districts and within a 30 km radius of the logistics centre. San Mateo County, Calif., residents, regardless of income, can now receive a rebate starting at $700 for a plug-in hybrid and $1,000 for a fully electric vehicle. Income-qualified county residents can receive a rebate as high as $3,700 for a plug-in hybrid and $4,000 for an EV. - Qualifying EVs are eight years old or newer with a pre-incentive purchase price of $25,000 or less. His 3:49.98 is just behind Bernard Lagat's 3:49.89. His other personal bests include 3:35 for the 1,500. He was a member of the U.S. national team for the 2017 World Championships in London, where he made the final and finished 10th in the world. He was an All-American for Columbia and Oregon. In this episode, we'll take a dive into his career thus far since he's certainly someone in the mix for an Olympic team spot next year but...this Saturday (May 30th) he will be spiking up for a world record attempt. He will be going for the blue jean mile world record of 4:11.80 and who knows if sub-4 is in the cards. Not only is he providing the world with some good ol' entertainment in a time when there are no races, but he's also doing it for a great cause. He has already raised more than 12,000 dollars for the National Alliance on Mental Illness in memory of his brother and for mental health awareness month. We talk about all that and more. CITIUS MAG popularized the Blue Jean Mile in 2017. We said we'd cough up some money for someone to break four minutes in it. With the 100-Mile American Record already under his belt (for 5+ years), ultra endurance athlete Zach Bitter just outdid himself on August 25th, 2019. He crushed the 100-Mile World Record, setting a 6:48-mile pace and besting the previous world record by nearly 10 minutes. Zach is notable for his low-carb, high-fat, animal-based lifestyle as a professional endurance athlete. He first transitioned to the ketogenic diet during an off-season, and immediately felt his sleep, energy, and recovery improve. By developing a flexible, fat-adapted metabolism, he's able to tactically use carbs to maximize racing performance. In this episode, Geoff & Zack discuss: · Zack's 100 Mile World Record, his mental game during racing, and why he got into ultra-endurance sport · LCHF diets for therapeutic cases vs. performance cases...does an athlete have more "leeway" with eating carbohydrates? · Carnivore diet for leaky gut & autoimmune issues Check out Zack's podcast here: https://humanperformanceoutliers.libsyn.com/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out our products for optimal metabolic, physical, & cognitive health: https://www.hvmn.com/pod Take a short survey that will help us improve the podcast and be entered in a HVMN Ketone giveaway: https://go.hvmn.com/podcastsurvey We also want to hear from our listeners/viewers! *I welcome my old friend Zach Bitter to the show to talk about all things related to peak performance and endurance. Zach is the host of the Human Performance Outliers podcast and is definitely honoring the show title with his amazing ultrarunning performances. He is the world record holder at 100 miles with an astonishing time of 11 hours, 19 minutes, which equates to running 6 min, 48 seconds per mile all day long!* Go try running one mile at that pace, and then repeat 100 times! Zach also busted the world record for 100 miles on a treadmill, so don’t complain that you get “bored” after 42 minutes at the gym. Zach has also long been a leader in fat-adapted endurance training, having discovered that a nutrient-dense, low carbohydrate diet helps him recover faster and also gives him a performance edge during ultramarathon competitions because he doesn’t require as many on-board calories as when he was a high carb athlete. Zach was a participant in the FASTER study (Fat Adapted Substrate utilization in Trained Elite Runners) where groundbreaking discoveries were made for the potential of humans to burn fat during exercise at a higher rate than previously thought possible. We get into a bit of science about athletic performance, but the best part of this episode is hearing about Zach’s methodical approach to peak performance and his evolved, process-oriented approach. He loves the challenge of ultrarunning, loves pushing the edges of human endurance performance, but has a healthy competitive disposition and strives to lead a balanced life. Enjoy listening to this super informative show with Zach, and if you’re interested in connecting with him for coaching, check out his website here ( https://zachbitter.com/ ). *TIMESTAMPS:* Zach Bitter is a world record holding runner who ran 100 miles in 11 hours and 19 minutes. He’s going to talk about his training diet. [01:50] As Zach got more serious about his ultramarathon training, he learned more about nutrition. [05:25] Even a strong “healthy” young athlete has energy swings that are not good for him. [08:28] There is not just one way to do this dietary journey. [10:31] Look at the individual plan rather than the group plan for diet and training to see what is best for you. [14:59] Zach uses his training as a school teacher in his coaching work. Treat people as individuals, not by throwing them into one group. [20:04] What was happening in the sport of ultra-marathon in 2010 when Zach got into it? The sport has grown massively. [25:27] Zach fills us in on his succession of breaking records with him amazing times. [31:11] Running on a flat track, Zach was averaging 06:47:05 per mile when he broke the world record. [35:12] If you have a bad race, don’t waste time with a pity party. Think about how to use that experience to help me improve for next time. [38:52] In 2011, Zach started to examine his diet and wanted to see if he could enhance his diet to accommodate his difficult workouts. He talks about his race fueling strategies. [42:36] Here in the year 2020, with so much sports nutrition information, we are still seeing many severe gastrointestinal problems in elite athletes. [51:26] The diet transformation had a huge improvement in terms of his recovery. He had swollen ankles. [54:19] Mike McKnight ran a hundred of miles with no calories.
