382 Best Garmin G1000, G3000, G5000 and Cirrus Perspective Settings to Fly Safer and Smarter

Max Trescott shares his top recommended settings for Garmin avionics systems, specifically the G1000, G1000 NXi, G3000, G5000, and the Cirrus Perspective and Perspective+ systems. These configuration tips enhance situational awareness, flight safety, and pilot efficiency—and many also apply to Garmin standalone navigators like the GTN 650 and 750. The episode begins with a critical safety upgrade: switching the Traffic Page vectors from Absolute to Relative. Unlike absolute vectors (which only show heading), relative vectors display a target aircraft's flight path in relation to your own—allowing you to detect potential collision courses earlier and take evasive action sooner. Max also explains Pilot Profiles, which store individual settings for different pilots or flight types. These profiles auto-save any inflight changes, even if made by other users, which can unintentionally overwrite your setup. He offers a clever workaround: naming your profile something like “Maintenance Only” to discourage accidental use. For Cirrus Perspective, Perspective+, and other G1000-based systems, Max outlines his strong preference for Track Up or Heading Up map orientations and why North Up is ergonomically flawed. North Up can disorient pilots in high-workload situations and may even contribute to midair conflicts, as it forces mental rotation of traffic and terrain. Airline pilots overwhelmingly avoid it—and you should too. Other key settings include: Auto Zoom: Turn off to avoid erratic map scaling. Track Vector: Set to 60 seconds to better judge turns and approach timing. Wind Vector: Display wind components (headwind/tailwind and crosswind) clearly for better landing decisions. Fuel Range Rings: Display fuel reserves and total endurance graphically to enhance fuel planning. Altitude Arc ("Banana Bar"): Visually predict level-off points—critical for IFR approaches. Obstacle & Terrain Awareness: Enable obstacle data and use Relative Terrain (especially at night) to avoid controlled flight into terrain (CFIT). For Cirrus Perspective pilots, Max also emphasizes enabling Runway Extensions to help identify the extended centerline in complex or night conditions, and TFR overlays to stay compliant with airspace restrictions. Soft key setup tips include: Enabling Traffic every flight. Using the Inset Map (Vertical Situation Display) to monitor terrain clearance, especially during nighttime descents or cruise-level wind shifts. Declutter Levels: Adjust map detail to balance visibility and clarity; Max prefers the “Detail –3” setting to retain Class B/C airspace while reducing screen clutter. Disabling Pathways and flashing cursors, which can cause visual overload. Through these curated settings, Max demonstrates how pilots flying with Garmin or Cirrus Perspective avionics can custom-tailor their displays for clarity, efficiency, and most importantly—safety. On the Sunday just before the release of this podcast, I ran a 10k running race. I have never liked running, or been very good at it, but I learned a lot through training for this race, and to my surprise I ended up actually quite enjoying it. The race went well - I got a PB by 2 mins and 48 seconds on my one previous 10k event - and it has now inspired me to sign up for my first ever duathlon. So much more to learn and improve on in training for that! In this episode I wanted to share the valuable tips and lessons I picked up from trying to get better at running, including: the benefits (to injury prevention, speed, increased motivation, and enjoyment of sessions) of having a good pair of running shoes how to warm up for a run tips on posture and technique to increase speed and reduce risk of injury the best cadence to run at the surprising amount of difference your arms can make to your running speed different types of running sessions to improve speed and fitness some of the best strength training exercises to help you run better how to fuel your body for regular exercise how to recover well If you find it helpful, please share, rate or review the podcast to help me reach more people - I really appreciate it. Here is the link to the book mentioned in the episode: The Art of Running Faster The YouTube channels I mentioned that are worth checking out are GTN, Ben Parkes, and the Running Channel. In this episode of Grating the Nutmeg, Natalie Belanger of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History tells the story of the deadliest man-made disaster in Connecticut history.     On July 6, 1944, the Big Top of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus caught fire during a matinee performance. Within ten minutes the tent was burned away, taking the lives of 168 people with it. Hundreds of people were injured, and thousands of survivors would remember that day for the rest of their lives. Review of the GISSI-3 Trial

Cardiology Trials

Lancet 1994;343:1115-22.Background By the time GISSI-3 was undertaken, evidence had emerged suggesting afterload reduction with angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors improved morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic systolic heart failure and these agents were already an established treatment for acute, severe heart failure based on theoretical grounds, despite lack of evidence from large scale RCTs. There was also lower level evidence that nitrates reduced mortality in patients with acute MI and these drugs were broadly used in coronary care units at the time. The GISSI-3 trial was undertaken to test the hypotheses that 6 weeks of treatment with lisinopril alone or transdermal glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) alone reduced the combined endpoint of mortality and severe LV dysfunction at 6 weeks compared to controls.Cardiology Trial's Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support our work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Patients Patients were eligible if they presented with chest pain and ST segment elevations of ≥1 mm in any limb lead of the electrocardiogram and/or ≥2 mm in any precordial leads and were admitted to the cardiac intensive care unit (CCU) within 24 hr from the onset of symptoms. Absolute contraindications included: severe heart failure requiring any of the study treatments, Killip class 4, high risk of hemodynamic deterioration after treatment with vasodilators (SBP 70 years of age (41% of excluded vs 27% of enrolled). As expected, excluded patients had higher in-hospital mortality (12% of excluded vs 6% of enrolled).Seventy-eight percent of patients enrolled were men and nearly three quarters were under the age of 70. Patients with anterior STEMI accounted for approximately 27%, those with inferior 32% and non-Q-wave MI's approximately 19%. Time from symptom onset was between 12-24 hours in 40%, between 6-12 hours in 25% and less than 6 hours in 35%. The vast majority of patients had a Killip score of 1 (85%) with the remainder having a Killip score of 2 (14%). Procedures The study used a 2x2 factorial design, resulting in 4 treatment groups: lisinopril alone, transdermal GTN alone, combination therapy with lisinopril and transdermal GTN, or no trial therapy.Patients randomized to oral lisinopril received 5 mg at the time of randomization, followed by 5 mg 24 hours later and 10 mg 48 hours later to be continued at a dose of 10 mg daily for 6 weeks. Patients with SBP 70 years of age, lisinopril significantly decreased the combined endpoint (OR 0.83; 24.8% vs 28.3%; 95% CI 0.74-0.94) and death (14.0% vs 15.6%). Odds ratios were not provided on individual components of the endpoints in pre-specified subgroup analyses. In women, lisinopril significantly decreased the combined endpoint (OR 0.86; 20.8% vs 23.4%; 95% CI 0.74-0.99) and death (10.7% vs 12.9%). Adverse event outcomes are not provided for these subgroups.Unlike lisinopril, transdermal GTN did not significantly reduce the combined endpoint (OR 0.94; 15.9% vs 16.7%; 95% CI 0.87-1.02) or death (OR 0.94; 6.5% vs 6.9%; 95% CI 0.84-1.05). There were no significant differences in any other clinical events. In pre-specified subgroup analyses, transdermal GTN did not significantly reduce the combined endpoint; however, absolute differences in death were very close to those seen with lisinopril.Additional results from this trial can be gleaned from analyses of patients based on whether they were in 1 of 4 treatment groups based on the factorial design 1) lisinopril + GTN control, 2) GTN + lisinopril control, 3) lisinopril control + GTN control (i.e., double control), or 4) lisinopril + GTN (i.e., double treatment); however, caution was urged in interpreting these underpowered comparisons that included sample sizes half as large as the primary comparison groups.Compared to double controls, neither lisinopril alone or GTN alone significantly reduced the combined endpoint or death but the absolute differences in events mirrored the primary analyses; however, the combination of lisinopril and GTN significantly reduced both the combined endpoint (OR 0.85; 14.8% vs 17.0%; 95% CI 0.76-0.94) and death (0.83; 6.0% vs 7.2%; 95% CI 0.70-0.97). These treatment effects were slightly larger than those for lisinopril alone. Conclusions GISSI-3 is the first trial to show that immediate treatment with ACE inhibition can reduce death and severe LV dysfunction in patients with acute myocardial infarction and this benefit is maintained in women and elderly patients who are at higher risk for experiencing adverse events. The NNT for the combined endpoint and death at 6 weeks was 71 and 125, respectively. The NNTs to prevent these outcomes in women and elderly patients were considerably lower (e.g., relative risk reductions were preserved resulting in higher absolute treatment benefits). The same effect was not observed for transdermal GTN; however, there was some hint from the trial that GTN may have a synergistic effect when used in combination with lisinopril. It must be pointed out that, like the earlier beta blocker trials, patients in GISSI-3 were hemodynamically stable and severe heart failure was an absolute contraindication. Thus, this trial does not say anything about the efficacy of ACE inhibition or nitrate therapy for patients with acute myocardial infarction complicated by acute heart failure and/or hemodynamic instability. Yet both treatments were frequently used for severe heart failure based on pathophysiologic reasoning at the time (e.g., effects of reducing preload and afterload on congestion and cardiac performance).Thank you for reading Cardiology Trial's Substack. In this episode of Grating the Nutmeg, Natalie Belanger sits down with acclaimed crime writer M. William Phelps to get to the bottom of a notorious early 20th century Connecticut murder story. In the 1910s, Amy Archer Gilligan operated an innovative business in Windsor: a convalescent home for the ill and elderly. Her benevolent facade, however, hid a deadly purpose: a business plan that depended on constant inmate turnover, aided by arsenic poisoning. You'll hear all about how the case was broken by a neighbor who happened to write for the Hartford Courant, in a story involving midnight graveyard autopsies, poisoned lemonade, a shady doctor, and the birth of the Connecticut State Police. And oh yeah, the story got turned into a blockbuster Broadway comedy and a 1944 movie starring Cary Grant.      If you want more historical true crime content, check out the latest exhibition at the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History. Meredith Calloway, Chief Visionary Officer and Co-Founder of Gifted Travel Network (GTN), is a renowned travel entrepreneur, success mindset guru, and former Wall Street analyst. With a mission to help entrepreneurs build businesses they love centered around their passion for travel, Meredith draws on her 20+ years of entrepreneurial experience, learning from mistakes, and cultivating a resilient success mindset. In 2001, Meredith left her lucrative Wall Street career to establish her own boutique travel agency, Hills of Africa Travel. Although the initial years were challenging, she persevered, determined to monetize her love for travel. Through three years of intensive learning in client attraction, marketing, branding, and running a successful solo business, Meredith transformed her travel agency into a profitable enterprise. Recognizing that many travel professionals faced similar challenges, she founded the Global Institute for Travel Entrepreneurs (GIFTE) in 2011, providing education and support to help accidental hobbyist travel agents thrive. In 2013, Meredith co-founded GTN with Jennifer Cochrane and Vanessa McGovern to address the gaps in the host agency landscape. GTN offered comprehensive marketing, business, and mindset education in a one-stop-shop format. While running both GIFTE and GTN, Meredith decided to sunset GIFTE in 2021 to focus on GTN's mission of providing an elevated hosting experience for luxury travel advisors. Happy Birthday Nona the Ninth!!!!! Please make sure you've finished reading the book before listening to this episode, as it is entirely made of spoilers. We're celebrating this special day with our very first reactions, recorded within 24 hours of reading Nona and having spoken to no one else about the book yet. This is the first Nona reaction episode we're releasing and we decided to focus on the characters—our favourite moments with them and all the emotions we were bursting with by the end of this book. We'll be releasing another reaction episode soon that's all about the plot—theories that were right or wrong, questions we still have about the series, and so on. (And thoughts on some characters we couldn't fit into this episode! Sorry, Pyrrha!)Thank you to Tordotcom Publishing for the Nona ARCs which allowed us to get this episode out on Nona the Ninth's birthday! * SPOILER ALERT * We reference events from GTN, HTN, and NTN in this podcast, as it's intended for readers who've already finished all three books. If you like the episode, find us on Twitter, Tumblr, or TikTok @onefleshonepod or e-mail onefleshonepod@gmail.com with any questions or theories!Intro/Segment Music: "Turismo" by Spaceinvader (Icons8 Music)Outro Music: "Warm Vacuum Tube" by Admiral Bob (2019 - Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution (3.0))

Dubbed a “warrior princess” by author Michael Lewis in his best-selling book “The Blind Side,” Leigh Anne is the inspirational matriarch of the Tuohy family. She graduated from Ole Miss and while there met her husband, Sean Tuohy. Both were ambitious college students: Leigh Anne was a cheerleader and an active member of her sorority, Kappa Delta and Sean became a record-breaking SEC basketball champion.  They are the proud parents of daughter, Collins, and sons, Michael Oher and Sean, Jr. In February 2013, Leigh Anne and the whole Tuohy family were on the sidelines cheering Michael and the Baltimore Ravens on to his first Super Bowl victory. Leigh Anne is an interior designer by trade and her work has been featured on HGTV and in numerous publications.  She has designed for such clients as Peyton Manning, Scottie Pippen, Isaac Bruce, and OJ Mayo and was a member of the design team for “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”  She is a New York Times best-selling author of “In a Heartbeat: Sharing the Power of Cheerful Giving.” Another book authored by Leigh Anne, “Turn Around,” is a five-day-per-week devotional that uses scripture as a springboard to reconsider what it means to give sacrificially, generously, and immediately.  After “The Blind Side” was released, the response was overwhelming and as a result, Sean and Leigh Anne established their charity, The Making it Happen Foundation, which promotes awareness, provides hope, and improves standards of living for all the children fighting to survive in the invisible cracks in society.  Leigh Anne was featured in “Family Addition with Leigh Anne Tuohy” on UP, the network dedicated to uplifting entertainment. The television show featured families as they go through the process of adding a new family member and also facilitated a makeover.  She makes appearances on various broadcasts in the national media, including “Fox and Friends,” “Good Morning America,” “20/20,” “The Today Show,” “Sean Hannity,” “Huffington Post Live” and HLN, to name a few. Leigh Anne is a sought-after motivational speaker represented by GTN, a United Talent Agency Company. Through all of their projects, Leigh Anne and her family continue their mission to inspire hope, ignite generosity, and make it happen for the deserving but underserved youth.
