Send us a textFor about two years Jay has been asking me for a history of UTD. It's one of the tasks I never completed, until now. On a long drive from San Diego up to the Sierra Nevada Mountains I recorded a look back at Unified Team Diving – how did it start, where did it start, what were some of the ups, and what were some of the downs. For those of you who have been around UTD for a long time, much of this will sound familiar. For those of you who have come to UTD more recently, this should give you some perspective on how we became what we are today.Questions or comments? There is much to unpack around how we run out instructor development program, how we train our instructor trainers, and how all that benefits the Unified Team Diving students and coaching clients.Back in the car, Jeff takes a look at the mechanics of teaching teaching – education as a change in behavior, that change being worthless without retention, how we use levels of learning, and how we create common ground with our students. Setback happen. This is true for everything we are learning, particularly when moving to a higher level in any field. In scuba training, in Unified Team Diving, we have a thing called the "ebay dive." This is when you come out of the water after such a frustrating dive that you want to put all your gear on ebay, sell it, and take up another sport. How we deal with the frustration of setbacks in scuba also informs how we deal with setbacks in life. In this episode of Chasing the Insights, I talk to trainer extraordinaire Jeff Seckendorf. Jeff talks to us about bringing coaching to learning. Jeff began his career as a photographer and filmmaker, first as a stills photographer for UPI and other national publications, then as a director/cameraman producing, directing, and/or photographing over 1000 TV commercials, dozens of music videos, movies, and documentaries. One recent project documents a team of Parkinson's patients on a trek to Mount Everest Base Camp. Jeff has won numerous awards for his cinematography, including Sundance Film Festival and Independent Spirit Award nominations for best cinematography. In 2008 Jeff eased out of the film industry and founded Unified Team Diving, a global scuba training and certification agency. While traveling the world training scuba instructors, Jeff authored eight training manuals and dozens of online courses. Jeff also teaches a “train the trainer” corporate leadership course. In 2022 Jeff became the Director of Operations for the Parkinson's Association of San Diego. As a masters athlete Jeff races a bicycle on track and has stood on the podium multiple times at the California state championships. He holds the hour record in his age group at the San Diego Velodrome and is a course record holder at the World 6-Hour Time Trial Championships. Jeff's current project on the bike is an attempt to break the U.S. hour record in the 70-74 age group. This entails riding his bike over 44 kilometers in one hour in a velodrome of his choosing. The hour record has led to his renewed interest in purpose. Initially this ride was completely self-serving, much like climbing a mountain because it's there. But that seemed like an empty reason to do all this hard work. So, as his training ramped up and got harder, and the commitment became more important, the purpose came into very clear focus and Jeff realized he could use this event to motivate others to find purpose. Jeff also offers a “Path to Mastery” workshop to help people discover what a renewed sense of purpose can look like. This short exercise guides the audience to look at something they are currently good at, how they got there, then apply that to something new. This interactive session looks at a process of discovery/training/practice/teaching and helps people answer the question, “I need a new purpose but I don't know what to do and I don't know what I'm good at.”

About Jeff Great scuba training does not have to be focused on the outcome. It can be about the process. As a nationally classed athlete and current world record holder (World 6-Hour Time Trial Championships 2020 and 2022 Course Record Holder; San Diego Velodrome Hour Record Holder) I bring a life time of coaching and being coached to scuba diving. If we take a page from coaching in almost every other discipline, coaches make athletes better. It is not just about making a runner or cyclist faster; it's about making them better. Beyond just a training schedule, great coaching programs include all the things that make an athlete better: core and strength training, nutrition, hydration, recovery, the mental aspects of the sport – so much more than what can be covered in a simple certification course. We now bring this coaching paradigm to scuba training through the UTD Scuba Coaching Program. It can be about the process."  A great scuba training program should include so much more than what can be covered in a simple certification course. In the UTD Scuba Coaching program you work with a coach who delivers a new set of "workouts" every week. These can be in-water exercises, academic classes and homework, equipment management, and much more. You have as much communication with your coach as you need as you are guided through a customized training program to reach your goals.
