June 11, 2025. Mark your calendars. PASD's Director of Operations, Jeff Seckendorf, will attempt to break four world cycling records to support the Parkinson's Association of San Diego. In this episode Jeff switched roles from interviewer to interviewee as Sherrie Gould, NP asked Jeff about the ride, the bike, the velodrome, and what it's like to do an massively difficult event like this, but with purpose. This ride is a fundraiser for the Parkinson's Association of San Diego. Please donate a fixed amount or pledge an amount per kilometer. Here's the link:https://parkinsonsassociation.org/200km-challenge/Click the link to learn more about Jeff, the ride, the bike, and to donate or pledge.
In this slightly longer episode, I was invited to speak to the North County Parkinson's Support Group in Oceanside, CA on the topic of mindfulness. In this half hour we look at rest and recovery for the body and for the mind, the difference between meditation and meditative, and we do a short, three minute guided meditation (if you are listening to this while driving, please do not close your eyes and meditate while hurtling down the freeway).Thoughts or comments, please contact us by clicking here. https://parkinsonsassociation.org/contact-pasd/Jeff Seckendorf
Jeff is a nationally classed athlete and current world record holder (World 6-Hour Time Trial Championships 2020 and 2022 Course Record Holder; San Diego Velodrome Hour Record Holder), a lifetime of experience in coaching and being coached is now applied to scuba diving. Drawing from coaching principles in various disciplines, the goal is to enhance more than just performance; it's about overall improvement. Effective coaching goes beyond creating training schedules to include elements such as core and strength training, nutrition, hydration, recovery, and the mental aspects of the sport—areas that extend far beyond what a basic certification course covers. This coaching paradigm is now integrated into the UTD Scuba Coaching Program. The focus is on being better, not just certified. Additionally, Jeff is preparing to attempt an international hour record on the bike in 2025, competing as a 70-year-old masters athlete. https://www.jeffreyseckendorf.com/ https://podmatch.com/guestdetail/1676651199519x721503232444948400 https://utdscubadiving.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/unified-team-diving/
In this episode of Chasing the Insights, I talk to trainer extraordinaire Jeff Seckendorf. Jeff talks to us about bringing coaching to learning. Jeff began his career as a photographer and filmmaker, first as a stills photographer for UPI and other national publications, then as a director/cameraman producing, directing, and/or photographing over 1000 TV commercials, dozens of music videos, movies, and documentaries. One recent project documents a team of Parkinson's patients on a trek to Mount Everest Base Camp. Jeff has won numerous awards for his cinematography, including Sundance Film Festival and Independent Spirit Award nominations for best cinematography. In 2008 Jeff eased out of the film industry and founded Unified Team Diving, a global scuba training and certification agency. While traveling the world training scuba instructors, Jeff authored eight training manuals and dozens of online courses. Jeff also teaches a “train the trainer” corporate leadership course. In 2022 Jeff became the Director of Operations for the Parkinson's Association of San Diego. As a masters athlete Jeff races a bicycle on track and has stood on the podium multiple times at the California state championships. He holds the hour record in his age group at the San Diego Velodrome and is a course record holder at the World 6-Hour Time Trial Championships. Jeff's current project on the bike is an attempt to break the U.S. hour record in the 70-74 age group. This entails riding his bike over 44 kilometers in one hour in a velodrome of his choosing. The hour record has led to his renewed interest in purpose. Initially this ride was completely self-serving, much like climbing a mountain because it's there. But that seemed like an empty reason to do all this hard work. So, as his training ramped up and got harder, and the commitment became more important, the purpose came into very clear focus and Jeff realized he could use this event to motivate others to find purpose. Jeff also offers a “Path to Mastery” workshop to help people discover what a renewed sense of purpose can look like. This short exercise guides the audience to look at something they are currently good at, how they got there, then apply that to something new. This interactive session looks at a process of discovery/training/practice/teaching and helps people answer the question, “I need a new purpose but I don't know what to do and I don't know what I'm good at.”

About Jeff Great scuba training does not have to be focused on the outcome. It can be about the process. As a nationally classed athlete and current world record holder (World 6-Hour Time Trial Championships 2020 and 2022 Course Record Holder; San Diego Velodrome Hour Record Holder) I bring a life time of coaching and being coached to scuba diving. If we take a page from coaching in almost every other discipline, coaches make athletes better. It is not just about making a runner or cyclist faster; it's about making them better. Beyond just a training schedule, great coaching programs include all the things that make an athlete better: core and strength training, nutrition, hydration, recovery, the mental aspects of the sport – so much more than what can be covered in a simple certification course. We now bring this coaching paradigm to scuba training through the UTD Scuba Coaching Program. Gemma and Ian chat to Jeff Seckendorf. Jeff is the Co-Founder and Current CEO/Owner of Unified Team Diving. The UTD tagline is "Great scuba training does not have to be focused on the outcome. It can be about the process." A great scuba training program should include so much more than what can be covered in a simple certification course. In the UTD Scuba Coaching program you work with a coach who delivers a new set of "workouts" every week. These can be in-water exercises, academic classes and homework, equipment management, and much more. You have as much communication with your coach as you need as you are guided through a customized training program to reach your goals. The overall concept is to slow the training process down from a few days to a few months or more. Jeff Seckendorf is the owner of Coach Me Strong. He works with the Parkinson's community and after COVID started, Jeff found that when gyms and programs closed, Parkinson's patients were not exercising and their diseases were progressing. Being a masters bicycle racer and having been coached for a decade, Jeff applied the traditional endurance athlete coaching model to three constituencies: people with Parkinson's, other neurological challenges like MS, Alzheimer's, and traumatic brain injury, and the third group is what he calls Gen O/W, for Generation Older/Wiser. Jeff Seckendorf's presentation on Scuba Coaching in the Technical Diving Resource Center at the DEMA show in Las Vegas, November 16, 2021:Great scuba training does not have to be focused on the outcome. It can be about the process. If we take a page from coaching in almost every other discipline, coaches make athletes better. It is not just about making a runner or cyclist faster; it's about making them better. Beyond just a training schedule, great coaching programs include all the things that make an athlete – and a scuba diver – better: core and strength training, nutrition, hydration, recovery, the mental aspects of the sport – so much more than what can be covered in a simple week-long certification course. Training based on process gives students the best of both worlds – effective scuba training and the time to process and explore scuba diving as a lifestyle. Coaching gives the student time to explore, time to learn, and time to have fun. UTD has pioneered a successful coaching model for both recreational and technical training and continues to offer coaching as an alternative to a traditional course.Click here for the PDF of the presentation powerpoint.

Jeff Seckendorf, educator, author, and filmmaker, draws a clear distinction between experts and experts who can teach. Very often, he believes, they are not one and the same. Jeff's specialty is teaching and training. Whether it's scuba diving, aerial acrobatics, brain surgery, or auto repair, Jeff's company, The Training Cycle, can not only teach the subject but can train others to teach it as well. His secret is allowing business owners, inventors, and other specialists to be the subject-matter experts, while he zeros in on the process of education. As Jeff tells host, author, and award-winning journalist Dean Rotbart, you can teach a person to fish, or you can teach that person how to teach anyone how to fish and then reel in the profits for your company. I believe there are two reasons to do a start-up. One is you are passionate about something. You want to do a company and, you are willing to ram your idea down the throats of potential clients. That was UTD. The second reason is you see a niche and, you fill it. And that is, coach me strong. So I have had the opportunity to do both of these. You're passionate about something. Create a new product and try to market it. Be open to a niche. Create it, fill it, and then try to market it. The commonality of those two things, it does not matter which one you do if you are willing to go the long road for either one. The commonality is business start-ups are marketing projects. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-inventive-journey/message
