What does yoga actually mean? If you answered 'union,' Harmony and Russell have a fascinating surprise for you. In this deeply rich conversation with Sanskrit scholar and Ashtanga teacher Zoë  Slatoff, the trio explores the ancient philosophical roots beneath the practices many of us do every day. Zoë is the author of Yogavataranam: The Translation of Yoga, A New Approach to Sanskrit, Associate Director of the Yoga Studies MA program at Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles), and a PhD candidate whose dissertation may permanently change the way you think about what yoga is for. The conversation moves from Zoë 's early years in Brooklyn and a pivotal Rodney Yee VHS tape, to engineering studies at the elite Cooper Union, to teaching 16 yoga classes a week in New York City, to the magic of Lakshmi Puram in Mysore before the internet existed. It arrives, finally, at the big philosophical question at the heart of her dissertation: how did yoga go from meaning separation to meaning union? What You'll Learn in This Episode Why "yoga" in the Yoga Sutras means separation—not union—and how Advaita Vedanta changed everything The role of the Upadesha Sahasri (attributed to Shankaracharya) in bridging dualism and non-duality How Pattabhi Jois used to quote ancient Vedantic texts every single day in conference in Lakshmi Puram Why the neti neti practice ('not this, not that') is a powerful tool for modern meditators How Zoe began her Sanskrit journey in Mysore and transformed it into a published textbook and academic career What it means to teach Sanskrit in a way that actually serves yoga practitioners (not classical scholars) The magic—and the chaos—of traveling to India without the internet, using hand-drawn maps and STD phone boxes Why Zoe believes dualism and non-duality are ultimately describing the same thing, just from different angles Guest Bio: Zoë  Slatoff Zoë  Slatoff is a Sanskrit scholar, longtime Ashtanga yoga practitioner and teacher, and author of Yogavataranam: The Translation of Yoga—a groundbreaking Sanskrit grammar textbook designed specifically for yoga practitioners who want to read the texts that inform their practice. The Bhagavad Gita is a world classic often considered to be not just the 'Hindu Bible' but sometimes the 'Indian Bible' as well. Over the last two centuries, it has attracted much scholarly attention from Indologists. Ithamar Theodor's bold and revisionist monograph The Philosophy of the Bhagavad-Gita (Cambridge UP, 2025) aspires to further develop their scholarship by treating the Gita as a discrete philosophy and by offering a systematic survey of its main topics and doctrines, in so doing emphasising their philosophical potential. A major innovation here is the articulation of the Gita's structure extracted from Vedantic and Yogic pattens of thought, presented in a modern fashion. This centres on the Gita's Vedantic concept of hierarchical reality and its Yogic concept of a ladder. Beyond its overarching philosophical and holistic approach to the Bhagavad Gita, the book addresses major themes such as dharma, rebirth, Yoga and Sankhya, bhakti, the Upanishadic nature of the text, and concepts of divinity. Send us a textHow do you know you're not insane? In this profound and mind-bending conversation, host Lira Ndifon sits down with author and philosopher Justin Witte to discuss his lifelong journey with a rare organic brain disorder and his book, The Shadowed Soul. Justin offers a rare, first-hand account of living with a thought disorder like schizophrenia, explaining how he uses ancient philosophy and modern science to navigate a mind that overproduces dopamine. This episode is a courageous look beyond the veil of "normalcy" to question the very nature of reality itself.Justin challenges the core of our beliefs, arguing that in a world of paradoxes, the only thing any of us can truly know is our own consciousness—the simple awareness of "I am". He shares how he has used single-pointed concentration meditation to gain control over his mind, manage his symptoms, and find peace in a brain that was once overwhelmingly loud. This is not just a discussion about mental health; it's a guide to separating your true self from the chaos of your thoughts. This is a must-listen for anyone who has ever felt controlled by their own mind. You will discover:The Inner Workings of Schizophrenia: A clear, lived-experience explanation of a thought disorder versus a mood disorder, and the impact of dopamine-blocking medication. The Paradox of Sanity: Why most "sane" people can't question their own sanity and how we all believe things that aren't true. The Power of "I Am": Learn about the Vedantic concept that our true, unchanging self is pure consciousness, and that identifying with our body and mind is the source of all our problems.Meditation as Medicine: How Justin uses the practice of Trataka to empty his mind, abate delusions, and train his brain for profound mental control. This conversation is an invitation to look beyond your labels and diagnoses and connect with the one thing that never changes: the witness within. If this episode challenged you to think deeper, please show your support by liking, following, and subscribing to the Self-Reflection Podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, and wherever you listen. There's a big difference between asking, “How can I change this?” and asking, “What am I meant to learn from this?” In this episode, Raghunath and Kaustubha explore how asking bigger, zoomed-out questions can unlock real transformation—and how Krishna's pastimes, far from being mere spiritual folklore, offer the deepest answers to the soul's most urgent needs. They discuss how these pastimes are meant to be approached not just through a religious lens, but through an ontological, metaphysical, and Vedantic one—and that's when their true power is revealed. Key Highlights: •  How shallow questions keep us stuck, and zoomed-out questions can set us free •  Why good questions aren't always comfortable—but they crack things open •  How to identify life's summum bonum—and reorient everything around it •  Seeing Krishna's life through a metaphysical lens—not just a religious one •  The danger of a life built on speed and comfort, but no direction SB 10.1.1-8 ********************************************************************* LOVE THE PODCAST?
