This episode picks up where Episode 167 left off. We suggest you listen to them in order. When Aaron Quinn called the Vallejo police to report that his girlfriend Denise Huskins had been kidnapped, and went into the station for questioning, a detective told Aaron that he didn't believe him. When Denise was released after being held captive for about 48 hours, police didn't believe her either. It soon became clear that the police viewed Denise and Aaron as suspects, not victims. Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn's book is Victim F. For a transcript of this episode, send an email to transcripts@thisiscriminal.com with the episode name and number. In March 2015, Denise Huskins and her boyfriend Aaron Quinn awoke from a sound sleep into a nightmare. Armed men bound and drugged them, then abducted Denise. Warned not to call the police or Denise would be killed. Aaron agonized about what to do. Finally he put his trust in law enforcement and dialed 911. But instead of searching for Denise, the police accused Aaron of her murder. His story, they told him, was just unbelievable. When Denise was released alive, the police turned their fire on her, dubbing her the “real-life ‘Gone Girl'” who had faked her own kidnapping. In Victim F, Aaron and Denise recount the horrific ordeal that almost cost them everything. Like too many victims of sexual violence, they were dismissed, disbelieved, and dragged through the mud. With no one to rely on except each other, they took on the victim blaming, harassment, misogyny, and abuse of power running rife in the criminal justice system. Their story is, in the end, a love story, but one that sheds necessary light on sexual assault and the abuse by law enforcement that all too frequently compounds crime victims' suffering. Together, they are spreading awareness and education for victims and parents through their new business "Coffee & Cocoa". Cocoa, from episode #20, is Denise's brave daughter who broke her silence and began this journey for pain and of healing. How did they do it? How are they triumphing after all that had happened? Denise Higgins, a college student and lover of languages, is still reeling from the death of her fiancé, a chaplain in the army, when she is introduced to Ben Moreau, a French-Korean 19-year-old three years her junior. Unlike Denise, who is a staunch Bible reader and a seer of visions, Ben is a jaded profligate surrounded by drug-taking friends. When Denise is hired to be Ben's sober companion, she has a few hurdles to overcome. Least of which are Ben's money, Ben's ability to manipulate her, and her own growing infatuation with him. When Denise realizes that an ancient curse hangs over Ben's family line, she begins to understand that her destiny is interwoven with Ben's. Denise Shull is a performance and decision coach to traders and athletes. She is well known for her effectiveness in assessing performance under high pressure situations. Denise began her Wall Street career in 1994 as trader and desk manager on the Chicago Board Options Exchange. In 2015 she offered critical insight on how to put together one of the main characters of the hit show “Billions” on Showtime. However, at the end of the day everyone is human and all traders have common psychological threads which she points out. When Denise analyzes a client she tries to understand a sequence of feelings that person is making and what the patterns of their feelings are. At first it is just about her figuring out how a clients brain works, and then she helps them see the patterns. What was the trigger for Denise to go down the path of studying the mind and human behavior? Starting from a young age she enjoyed observing and counseling friends. In her mid to late 20’s she started looking at her friends relationships and seeing that the people were all different but the scenarios were the same. A teacher helped point out a theory of Freud’s. Denise Axelsen is an award-winning blacksmith. Educated in England, she now enjoys living in Newry, Victoria Australia. With over a decade of experience forging metal, Denise makes small functional and custom pieces as well as stunning sculptural works. What We Talked About Denise went to university in the UK for three-dimensional design after a 25-year career as a nurse. In her second year at university, she took a forging class, was very drawn to the craft and decided that was what she wanted to do. It took her another five years to convince the Rural Development Commission to let her in on the New Entrants Training Scheme in pure forge work. After taking a few courses at the Hereford School of art with Adrian Legge, taking as many BABA workshops as possible and giving up her nursing career she finally qualified into the Scheme in 2003. The Training Scheme was a UK government funded scheme aimed at 16 to 25-year old’s to become apprentice blacksmiths for 12 weeks over a course of 2 years. Denise moves just about every two years due to her husband being in the Air Force, so she has to be particular regarding the tools she buys knowing she will need to move it to another location every 2 years. When Denise moved to Australia she decided to sell most of her blacksmith tools she had acquired in the UK and buy more blacksmith tools in Australia. She soon found out that the tools were ten times the cost of everything she had already bought in the UK. Denise attended the Ypres blacksmith event in Belgium and worked on Patrick Pelgrom’s team to forge his design panel for the cenotaph site. This was a lifetime experience that she didn’t want to miss out on and she could catch up with a lot of her UK friends. Last month Denise attended a 4-day hammer making class at the historic Eveleigh Locomotive Workshop in Sydney. In 2004 Denise was the first female to win the UK Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths‘Champion Blacksmith’ with her forged table. Welcome! My guest today is Denise Dare, who knows the importance of cultivating the practice of self-love, and how this practice can allow you to honour and see your beautiful self. Denise is a dreamer, writer, mystic, and home-educating, hippy mom of two daughters. She is a thought leader who began The Self-Love Sisterhood online community in 2015. This year, she is offering her first online course, The Sacred Art of Self-Love, to help women honour and love their beautiful sacred selves. Let’s catch up with Denise! In this episode, you'll hear: Although self-love can be different for everyone, it embodies inquiry, awareness, and discovery. When Denise was a teenager, she felt the self-doubt and started asking questions and reading personal development books. Self-love has kept her afloat through challenges, failures, motherhood, etc. Denise explains how self-love allows her to be the mom she wants to be. Some of Denise’s favorite self-love practices include meditation, walking on the beach, yoga, meeting with girlfriends, etc. The greatest gift Denise has received from self-love is that she knows she’s “good enough” and doesn’t have to question herself. “Pain is for everyone, but suffering is our personal choice.” “There is always room for more forgiveness.” Denise advises surrounding yourself with supportive people and move others to the outer circle. Denise uses self-love practices with her clients in giving them permission to do what they want and defining what “having it all” means to each of us. She encourages her clients to meditate on what they want to “feel,” and determining what priorities matter most, and never losing the spirit of “play.” How do you incorporate more self-love? Denise says to start with ONE thing. For her, the ONE thing was to say “I love you” in the mirror. “Let it be inspired, not required.” (One of Denise’s favorite sayings) For Denise, self-love includes gratitude, reading uplifting books, and nourishing the body. She says to ask, “How can I nurture the little girl inside me?” Top 4 Tips To From Denise: Practice gratitude for yourself Think about something you can add to your schedule that makes you feel loved Be playful Be open to sisterhood and ask for help when you need it Favourite Quote: “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, she became a butterfly.” -Barbara Haynes Hewitt Favourite Fictional Character: Ayla from The Clan of the Cave Bears books SuperShero Name: Bliss About Denise Dare: At the heart of Denise’s vision is co~creating a world where work feels like play, hugs are medicine, and love comes first. Denise is a home educating Cali mama, writer, mystic, and thought leader, happily featured by Positively Positive, Tiny Buddha, Elephant Journal and other rad places on the interwebs.
