Every writer needs a compass to guide their journey. In this episode, we explore the power of personal writing principles and how they can transform your writing practice from scattered to structured, from overwhelming to achievable. After a decade of writing and publishing, I'm sharing the ten principles that have shaped my writing journey - not as a rigid rulebook but as inspiration for developing your own unique approach to writing. In this episode, you'll discover: Why consistency matters more than inspiration (and why 30 minutes a day is enough!) The importance of reading widely - beyond your genre - to develop your unique voice How to handle the reality that not everyone will love your writing (and why that's perfectly okay) Why treating your writing like marathon training can lead to better results The power of celebrating small wins along your writing journey How to keep writing when you're stuck (hint: sometimes "blah blah blah" is perfectly acceptable!) Why your friends and family's response to your writing shouldn't define your success The crucial balance between dedication and enjoyment in your writing practice Remember, these principles aren't a one-size-fits-all solution. They're a starting point for developing your own North Star that will light up your unique writing path. Whether you're writing your first book or your fifteenth, having clear principles can help you navigate the challenges and celebrate the victories of your writing journey. Enjoy! Research shows that engaging students in writing about what they read can significantly improve their understanding and retention of the material. We'll unpack what this research means for your classroom, why it's particularly impactful for struggling readers and writers, and how you can make "writing stuff" a regular part of your literacy block. So why is writing about reading so powerful? It not only helps students clarify their thoughts and focus on the most important information from a text, but also encourages them to make connections and reflect on their reading. The process of transforming their ideas into their own words, whether by summarizing, sharing personal opinions, or writing reviews, pushes students to think critically and engage actively with the content. If you've ever wondered how to transform academic research into a compelling business book or been interested in how to navigate the challenging world of book distribution as a self-published author, this guest episode is for you! Dr Nia Thomas is the Director of Thoughts and Ideas at Knowing Self, Knowing Others, and an academically awarded thought leader in self-aware leadership. She practises self-aware leadership every day in her role as a Director at a Children's Charity. She is also a frequent blog writer and a passionate podcast host of The Knowing Self Knowing Others Podcast. Earlier this year, she published her first book, ‘The Self-Awareness Superhighway' - which helps leaders in workplaces and organisations explore the essence of self-awareness, the definition of leader effectiveness and the discourse on leadership at all levels. During our conversation, we talk about: What led her to write this book and how she used her observations of what's been going on in her industry to help make the book relevant to leaders right now. Her writing journey and the many positive things it has taught her, even when it felt tough at times. How she managed the shift from academic writing for her thesis to writing a business book that would speak to her ideal reader in a way that resonates - something I support quite a few PhD authors to do. Her experience of getting her books into bookshops - and not just selling via Amazon. It was quite a challenging part of her journey but one she's more than willing to share to help others. And so much more! This is a lovely conversation - and one that touches on all aspects of the writing process. I hope you enjoy listening. Justice can be elusive. Family secrets can be deadly. The stakes are high, and the clock is ticking in a volatile criminal case filled with unanswered questions. And Carrington Reed is running short on time to piece together clues that will solve the puzzle. Hostage negotiator Carrington Reed is called to the scene when reports come in that fifteen hostages are being held by the Kendrix brothers in an abandoned house in south Texas. When she arrives on site, Carrington quickly learns that the brothers are armed and refuse to release their victims, a group of undocumented immigrants, until the local police identify their father's murderer. Working closely with Levi Ehrlich, a handsome investigative reporter who has covered some of Carrington's negotiations in the past, she finds herself being undeniably drawn to him. Carrington digs deeper into the death of the Kendrixes' father and begins to notice that some details surrounding his death aren't adding up. As Carrington investigates the brothers' claims and tries to piece together their motive for taking innocent people captive, it soon becomes clear that they are trying to hide something and that revenge for their father's death may not be what they're really bargaining for after all. To protect the hostages and ensure the brothers don't carry out the rest of their sinister plot, Carrington must get to the bottom of one family's secret and the truth they're trying so hard to hide before time runs out. WRITE STUFF IS BACK! After a hiatus this year, we are back to bring you some new great reads and authors! Tonight we kick off the conversation as we chat with author Avellina Balestri about any and everything. From writing, to faith, to weird TV shows as she talks about her books and we showcase her newest release called: All Ye That Pass: Gone for a Soldier, her American Revolution novel. If you don a scarlet coat at the price of your conscience, the color will only remind you of the wound in your own soul! If you sign away the faith of your fathers, all lesser goods will be forfeited too!” Young Edmund Southworth could not have foreseen the path his life would take upon befriending Gentleman Johnny Burgoyne, British military veteran and parliamentarian. As Catholic recusants from the north of England, Edmund's once noble family has struggled to survive for centuries in the shadow of the Anglican ascendancy. But General Burgoyne offers him the chance to put past humiliations behind him by joining the Church of England and donning a scarlet coat as an officer of King George III. Although his conscience is uneasy, Edmund embarks upon Burgoyne's March to subdue the American revolutionaries by splitting the colonies in two. He finds unexpected love in the arms of Abby Vanderkamp, a supporter of American independence, who will do anything to free her father from a British prison hulk or, failing that, strike a blow for the hard-pressed rebel cause. As the British advance through the New York wilderness devolves into increasing brutality and instability, Edmund will have his already divided loyalties tested to the breaking point under the influence of this hostile land which presents him with new challenges and opportunities alike. Have you ever wondered what it takes to publish multiple books? Perhaps your first one has given you a taste of how exciting the writing journey can be. On this week's podcast, I talk to multi-published author Shelley Wilson. She's a self-confessed word nerd with a passion for storytelling, a love of exclamation marks, and a mission to inspire and entertain. She's an English multi-genre author of YA fiction and motivational self-help titles. During our brilliant conversation, we chat about: The incredible success of her debut nonfiction book, ‘How I Changed My Life in a Year' - selling 20,000 copies - and why community and building your author platform is so important. Her hybrid publishing model —both with her traditional publisher and through self-publishing—and her experience when one of the ‘Big Five' publishers got in touch! Just goes to show you never know who's reading or listening to your stuff. Why we can underestimate the emotional journey we'll go on when writing - and why self-compassion, vulnerability and kindness are an essential part of our author toolkits. Shelley's habits for getting her bum in the chair and continuing writing—and the power of a realistic deadline. And lots more! Shelley really is an inspiration to me - she's published 20 books - but what I loved most about talking to her was how much she wants to help others succeed, too. Warm, funny and incredibly knowledgeable, Shelley really is someone we can all learn a lot from - no matter where we are in our own publishing career. Enjoy!
