Episode summaryAt 32, Marcia found a lump she assumed was “nothing.” It wasn't. In quick succession came diagnosis (May 1998), surgery including mastectomy and reconstruction, and years of hormone therapy. The shock gave way to a long, messy recovery marked by anxiety, tears, and the fierce desire to “be there” for her two young sons. Yoga entered as a lifeline: first disciplined Iyengar classes that rebuilt physical strength and steadiness, then Aṣṭāṅga for rhythm, breath, dṛṣṭi, and mental focus, and eventually yoga therapy informed by the pañcamaya kośa model—meeting herself where she was, day by day.Part two of Marcia's story is even more tender: years later, her 15-year-old son, Alex, was diagnosed with high-grade osteosarcoma. Eight months of aggressive chemotherapy, limb-saving surgery, infection, and eventual amputation followed. Through sleepless hospital nights and fragile windows at home, Marcia leaned on simple, steady practices—breath, gentle movement, and the sacred ordinary of hanging laundry in the sun. Key themesThe long arc of recovery: Treatment can be quick; integration takes time. Yoga created structure (set sequences, five-breath holds) that translated into emotional steadiness. From outer strength to inner ease: As physical stability returned, so did mental clarity and emotional regulation—sthira-sukham āsanam (PYS 2.46) in action.Rituals of the ordinary: In crisis, simple routines (breathing, gentle stretches, even doing the wash) become anchors of meaning and regulation.Pañcamaya kośa self-check: How am I—body, breath/energy, mind, personality/values, and meaning? Let practice be responsive, not rigid.Caregivers need care: Five minutes of breath can change the nervous system—and the day.Post-traumatic growth: Agency (“this diagnosis won't define our life”) and community support foster resilience.Yoga therapy in oncology: Practical tools for survivors and families; thoughtful scope of practice and team-based care.Memorable moments“I was angry at the interruption to my life—I didn't want cancer to stop me from living my dharma.”“The set sequence and five breaths made Aṣṭāṅga meditative; my body knew what came next, and my mind could rest.”“Hospital life means not moving, not sleeping, not eating well. At home, a decent meal, a real bed, and a few breaths on the mat felt holy.”“Supporting my son after amputation, I realized the PT's ‘Superman' was Śalabhāsana—the same human body, different language.”Practical takeaways (for listeners)Structure regulates: A consistent class or home sequence can downshift anxiety; predictability is medicine.Five-breath rule: Linger in postures long enough to feel the pose regulate the breath (and vice versa).Honor seasons: Your practice can be Iyengar-precise one season, Aṣṭāṅga-rhythmic the next, and kośa-guided thereafter. That's yoga.Caregiver micro-practices work: Three minutes of diaphragmatic breathing between scans or consults matters.Who this episode supportsPeople navigating or recovering from cancerParents and caregivers living in medical systemsYoga teachers/therapists seeking oncology-informed, nervous-system-first approachesAnyone rebuilding identity and routine after a health crisisAbout Marcia MercierWebsite: www.marcie.yoga.com Location: North London (UK)Offerings:Weekly online Yoga for Breast Cancer (Wednesdays 09:30–10:30 UK)1:1 Yoga Therapy (online & in person)Haṭha and Vinyāsa classes (online and local studios)Contributor with Get Me Back—a cancer-recovery community offering strength training, yoga, Pilates, and on-demand classes (getmeback.uk)Resources mentionedmarcie.yoga — contact and class scheduleGet Me Back (UK): membership and on-demand support for people post-treatmentHost reflectionMarcia's story is a fierce testament to the human spirit yoked to practice. In yogic terms, she modeled tapas without self-punishment, svādhyāya without self-absorption, and praṇidhāna without passivity. This is what it looks like when philosophy leaves the page and enters a hospital ward, a nursery, a kitchen, and a yoga mat. Send us a textWhat happens when you look in the mirror and no longer recognize the survivor staring back at you?For many women recovering from breast cancer, burn injuries, or traumatic accidents, the physical battle may be over, but the emotional war with their own reflection has just begun. In this deeply moving and transformative episode, host Lira Ndifon sits down with Yesenia Nissan, a Bay Area-based Permanent Makeup and Paramedical Tattoo Artist who is redefining the intersection of beauty and mental health.Yesenia takes us into the delicate world of Paramedical Tattooing—a specialized art form used to create realistic 3D areolas and camouflage scars. She shares her pivot from a corporate medical career at Stanford to finding her soul's calling: using ink to help women reclaim the narrative of their bodies. Yesenia recounts the tearful, pivotal moment she handed a mirror to a cancer survivor who had lost her brows to chemotherapy, witnessing not just a physical change, but a profound "relaxation of the nervous system" as the woman finally saw herself again. But Yesenia's empathy is born from her own fires. She opens up about her personal journey as a teen mother at 16, navigating the stigmas of single motherhood in the expensive Bay Area, and rebuilding her own shattered confidence through faith and resilience. This is a conversation about more than just skin. You will discover:The Science of Visual Healing: How restoring physical features like the breast can trick the brain into releasing trauma and anxiety.Beyond Vanity: Why seeking aesthetic restoration isn't about hiding; it's about taking control of your story. The Single Mom Hustle: Yesenia's raw advice on overcoming societal "brokenness" and finding power in motherhood.Faith & Business: How spirituality guides Yesenia's hands and helps her hold space for her clients' grief and joy. This episode is a beautiful reminder that while we cannot always erase our scars, we have the absolute power to redefine what they mean.

The Vancouver-based Pink Lemonade was started in 2010 by two doctors Allen and Cassie Gabriel, a plastic surgeon and an anesthesiologist. They saw a gap in non-medical, emotional support for women being treated for breast cancer in the Portland-metro area. They began offering retreats and support groups locally, eventually adding a mentorship program where breast cancer survivors who have gone through treatment mentor others who have more recently gotten a diagnosis. And 15 years later, the nonprofit serves people in all 36 Oregon counties and six in SW Washington. Susan Stearns is the CEO of Pink Lemonade and was its first staff member who was also a survivor. Tina Sixberry has been a mentor since 2019 after participating in other programs. Miyuki Yaegashi met Sixberry and became her mentee earlier this year, shortly after she was diagnosed. All three join us in studio to talk about creating connections and community, and making sure those facing breast cancer diagnosis and treatment know they are not alone.

Abirami Iyer shares her profound journey from childhood trauma to becoming a breast cancer survivor and advocate. She discusses the challenges she faced, including her mother's struggles with domestic violence, her own diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma, and the emotional and physical toll of treatment. Abirami emphasizes the importance of mental health, community support, and self-advocacy in her healing process. She also highlights her upcoming participation in the Mrs. Universe pageant as a platform to raise awareness about breast cancer and domestic violence. When faced with a life-altering diagnosis like cancer, it'seasy to feel like the world is falling apart, and that all of a sudden, your dreams are out of your reach. But Abirami Iyer chose to rise above it.Just around her 40th birthday, Abirami was diagnosed withbreast cancer. Her treatment journey lasted more than two years, filled with both physical and emotional pain. But instead of letting the experience break her, she found a way to grow through it. She used that chapter of her life not only to heal herself, but to guide and support others walking the same difficult road.Abirami is a full-time employee at Microsoft, a wife, andthe mother of two kids. Despite such a full life, she still makes time to uplift and empower others. Through Facebook support groups like Breast Cancer Survivors and Warriors and Washington Breast Cancer Survivors, she helps survivors feel seen, heard, and supported. She also advocates for organizations like DiepCFoundation.org, helping patients navigate one of the toughest battles of their lives. And by collaborating with the Flute ‘n Feather Dance Company, she raises funds to support early breast cancer diagnosis in rural India. But there's still more: Beyond all this, Abirami finds timeto organize confidence-building photoshoots to help survivors rediscover their strength and beauty. She leads “Breast Cancer Awareness Talks and Campaigns” at Microsoft, and has also raised funds for the National Breast Cancer Association by placing Group 2nd on FabOver40. Abirami has been honored with many awards and titles thatcelebrate her confidence and compassion. These aren't just pageant wins — they're platforms she uses to raise awareness, encourage self-love, and inspirehope in other survivors. When sharing the news that she had been awarded the title Mrs. Elite Universe America, she said that her butterfly-themed dress honored the pink ribbons in which she had written the names of the survivors she has met.“It was a walk of honor and I proudly carried theirmessage with me to spread positivity… in humanity,” she says.Get In Touch with Abi:

Want to be a guest or know someone would be a great fit? I am looking for military vets, active duty, military brats, veteran service orgs or anyone in the fitness industryReinvention can start with a single question: how do I want to feel today? We open season five with certified style coach and breast cancer survivor Hardie Cobbs, who helps us trade rigid rules for a personal, energizing approach to getting dressed—one that especially serves veterans and anyone stepping out of uniforms or old identities. Hardy's take is refreshingly human: style is the story you tell with your choices, from the clothes you reach for to the rooms you live in and the way you move through your day.We dig into the practical first. Color is emotional and technical—undertones and chroma matter, but so does the shade that makes you light up. Fit and silhouette are tools: wide-leg trousers for elegance, tailored lines for focus, and playful shapes when you want a lift. If a color you love doesn't flatter near your face, wear it below the waist or carry it in a bag. We talk about building a small set of trusted brands, trying on challenging silhouettes in person, and using Pinterest to spot patterns you already love. Then we tackle the bulging closet problem with a gentle, effective edit: define your style words, know your body shape, commit to your color palette, and spend a short Sunday session “playing” new pairings into existence.Hardie also dismantles the myth of “age-appropriate.” If a mini skirt and strong legs make you feel alive at 65, that's not a faux pas—that's alignment. The real faux pas is outsourcing who you are to trends or AI templates that don't know your life. Her “Year in Style” framework turns intention into rhythm, aligning wardrobe, home, and routines with each month's micro-season so you stay connected to yourself, not surprised by the mirror. And woven through the conversation is a lifesaving reminder: book your annual mammogram and rebook the next one before you leave the office. Catching Hardy's aggressive tumor in time changed everything. If you're ready to feel like yourself again—on the outside and the inside—hit play. Grace is first generation Italian Australian. Her parents immigrated from Southern Italy to Australia when they were  young. Rosa and Alfredo, Grace's parents, met many years later in Australia and started their family of four girls.  Rosa was one of nine children and she was  fifteen when landing in Australia. Alfredo lost both his parents at five years old and had a rough childhood.  He was a victim of abuse and moved from house to house as a child. De Angeli reflects saying "he did the best he could with what he had."Grace insists "that it was a cultural thing" as to why her mother stayed throughout  many years of emotional, verbal and physical abuse. Eventually, Grace and her younger sister became targets as well.  It was always the fear and bullying tactic that their father used especially against their mom, Rosa. Grace says that her father would often scream at her mother "you either stay or you die" or "you leave, I'll kill you." So her mother stayed out of fear.  "We were all brought up with the fear that if we did something wrong we would be killed," remarks Grace. "When I think back to my childhood I wasn't protected by my mother, but she taught me who not to be when I grew up."One would think that this would take a real tole on Grace's life and her future. But the best news is that with the help of her husband and many others, Grace has learned how to transform her life and heal from her scars of her father plus how to beat Breast Cancer with many different treatments and therapies including Eastern and Western Medicines, mind over matter and the list goes on and on. She is a true inspiration. She declares "it doesn't matter where you are in your journey, whether stage 1 or stage 4 breast cancer OR any illness, you need to get things right in your soul and spirit, where you are your most authentic self." She continues, "it doesn't matter as long as you are honest and liberated within yourself, it doesn't matter what happens next."For a young woman who at twenty one years old had contemplated suicide, to becoming this force of nature to heal not only herself but help others on their individual journey is remarkable. There's so much more to this story so please do listen to the episode in it's entirety. Grace is emphatic when saying "we were put on this planet to be ourself. If you can be the best version of yourself, you've done it."To find Grace's podcast use on link below:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/id1552339592    "Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the roles they play in our lives. "No one should suffer. I think a lot of cancer survivors get told, be thankful you're alive. We've got all these wonderful treatments. We will keep you alive and just deal with the side effects of treatments, and that just isn't true." - Dr. Mindy Goldman When I sat across from Dr. Mindy Goldman at dinner the night before Tamsen Fadal's World's Hottest Menopause Party, I knew I had to get her on the podcast. As someone who's spent decades watching women suffer in silence after breast cancer treatment—told just to be grateful they're alive while managing devastating menopausal symptoms—I was thrilled to meet someone breaking down these barriers, finally. Dr. Goldman has created something revolutionary: the only program in the country that bridges breast cancer care with menopause management, training over 300 providers to support survivors through virtual telehealth. We dive deep into the biggest myth plaguing women today—that ALL breast cancer survivors must avoid hormones forever—and she explains why that's simply not true for everyone. From the real truth about bioidentical hormones versus synthetic ones, to natural alternatives that actually work, to when testosterone might be safe, this conversation will arm you with the knowledge to have informed discussions with your healthcare team. Most importantly, you'll discover that suffering through treatment side effects isn't your only option.   What you'll learn: Why "breast cancer is not breast cancer" and how different types affect hormone therapy decisions The real truth about bioidentical hormones versus the synthetic ones used in the Women's Health Initiative study Natural alternatives for managing hot flashes, sleep issues, and other menopause symptoms during cancer treatment How specific exercise protocols (including interval training) can actually help prevent cancer recurrence When vaginal estrogen might be safe even for hormone-positive breast cancer survivors Lifestyle factors that matter more than genetics for cancer prevention Why women with genetic mutations or family history can often still use hormone therapy How MIDI Health is revolutionizing care for cancer survivors in all 50 states Love the Podcast?
