Abirami Iyer shares her profound journey from childhood trauma to becoming a breast cancer survivor and advocate. She discusses the challenges she faced, including her mother's struggles with domestic violence, her own diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma, and the emotional and physical toll of treatment. Abirami emphasizes the importance of mental health, community support, and self-advocacy in her healing process. She also highlights her upcoming participation in the Mrs. Universe pageant as a platform to raise awareness about breast cancer and domestic violence. When faced with a life-altering diagnosis like cancer, it'seasy to feel like the world is falling apart, and that all of a sudden, your dreams are out of your reach. But Abirami Iyer chose to rise above it.Just around her 40th birthday, Abirami was diagnosed withbreast cancer. Her treatment journey lasted more than two years, filled with both physical and emotional pain. But instead of letting the experience break her, she found a way to grow through it. She used that chapter of her life not only to heal herself, but to guide and support others walking the same difficult road.Abirami is a full-time employee at Microsoft, a wife, andthe mother of two kids. Despite such a full life, she still makes time to uplift and empower others. Through Facebook support groups like Breast Cancer Survivors and Warriors and Washington Breast Cancer Survivors, she helps survivors feel seen, heard, and supported. She also advocates for organizations like DiepCFoundation.org, helping patients navigate one of the toughest battles of their lives. And by collaborating with the Flute ‘n Feather Dance Company, she raises funds to support early breast cancer diagnosis in rural India. But there's still more: Beyond all this, Abirami finds timeto organize confidence-building photoshoots to help survivors rediscover their strength and beauty. She leads “Breast Cancer Awareness Talks and Campaigns” at Microsoft, and has also raised funds for the National Breast Cancer Association by placing Group 2nd on FabOver40. Abirami has been honored with many awards and titles thatcelebrate her confidence and compassion. These aren't just pageant wins — they're platforms she uses to raise awareness, encourage self-love, and inspirehope in other survivors. When sharing the news that she had been awarded the title Mrs. Elite Universe America, she said that her butterfly-themed dress honored the pink ribbons in which she had written the names of the survivors she has met.“It was a walk of honor and I proudly carried theirmessage with me to spread positivity… in humanity,” she says.Get In Touch with Abi:

Want to be a guest or know someone would be a great fit? I am looking for military vets, active duty, military brats, veteran service orgs or anyone in the fitness industryReinvention can start with a single question: how do I want to feel today? We open season five with certified style coach and breast cancer survivor Hardie Cobbs, who helps us trade rigid rules for a personal, energizing approach to getting dressed—one that especially serves veterans and anyone stepping out of uniforms or old identities. Hardy's take is refreshingly human: style is the story you tell with your choices, from the clothes you reach for to the rooms you live in and the way you move through your day.We dig into the practical first. Color is emotional and technical—undertones and chroma matter, but so does the shade that makes you light up. Fit and silhouette are tools: wide-leg trousers for elegance, tailored lines for focus, and playful shapes when you want a lift. If a color you love doesn't flatter near your face, wear it below the waist or carry it in a bag. We talk about building a small set of trusted brands, trying on challenging silhouettes in person, and using Pinterest to spot patterns you already love. Then we tackle the bulging closet problem with a gentle, effective edit: define your style words, know your body shape, commit to your color palette, and spend a short Sunday session “playing” new pairings into existence.Hardie also dismantles the myth of “age-appropriate.” If a mini skirt and strong legs make you feel alive at 65, that's not a faux pas—that's alignment. The real faux pas is outsourcing who you are to trends or AI templates that don't know your life. Her “Year in Style” framework turns intention into rhythm, aligning wardrobe, home, and routines with each month's micro-season so you stay connected to yourself, not surprised by the mirror. And woven through the conversation is a lifesaving reminder: book your annual mammogram and rebook the next one before you leave the office. Catching Hardy's aggressive tumor in time changed everything. If you're ready to feel like yourself again—on the outside and the inside—hit play. Then tell us the one “rule” you're ditching and the color that makes you feel unstoppable. Grace is first generation Italian Australian. Her parents immigrated from Southern Italy to Australia when they were young. Rosa and Alfredo, Grace's parents, met many years later in Australia and started their family of four girls. Rosa was one of nine children and she was fifteen when landing in Australia. Alfredo lost both his parents at five years old and had a rough childhood. He was a victim of abuse and moved from house to house as a child. De Angeli reflects saying "he did the best he could with what he had."Grace insists "that it was a cultural thing" as to why her mother stayed throughout many years of emotional, verbal and physical abuse. Eventually, Grace and her younger sister became targets as well. It was always the fear and bullying tactic that their father used especially against their mom, Rosa. Grace says that her father would often scream at her mother "you either stay or you die" or "you leave, I'll kill you." So her mother stayed out of fear. "We were all brought up with the fear that if we did something wrong we would be killed," remarks Grace. "When I think back to my childhood I wasn't protected by my mother, but she taught me who not to be when I grew up."One would think that this would take a real tole on Grace's life and her future. But the best news is that with the help of her husband and many others, Grace has learned how to transform her life and heal from her scars of her father plus how to beat Breast Cancer with many different treatments and therapies including Eastern and Western Medicines, mind over matter and the list goes on and on. She is a true inspiration. She declares "it doesn't matter where you are in your journey, whether stage 1 or stage 4 breast cancer OR any illness, you need to get things right in your soul and spirit, where you are your most authentic self." She continues, "it doesn't matter as long as you are honest and liberated within yourself, it doesn't matter what happens next."For a young woman who at twenty one years old had contemplated suicide, to becoming this force of nature to heal not only herself but help others on their individual journey is remarkable. There's so much more to this story so please do listen to the episode in it's entirety. Grace is emphatic when saying "we were put on this planet to be ourself. If you can be the best version of yourself, you've done it."To find Grace's podcast use on link below:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/id1552339592 "Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the roles they play in our lives. "No one should suffer. I think a lot of cancer survivors get told, be thankful you're alive. We've got all these wonderful treatments. We will keep you alive and just deal with the side effects of treatments, and that just isn't true." - Dr. Mindy Goldman When I sat across from Dr. Mindy Goldman at dinner the night before Tamsen Fadal's World's Hottest Menopause Party, I knew I had to get her on the podcast. As someone who's spent decades watching women suffer in silence after breast cancer treatment—told just to be grateful they're alive while managing devastating menopausal symptoms—I was thrilled to meet someone breaking down these barriers, finally. Dr. Goldman has created something revolutionary: the only program in the country that bridges breast cancer care with menopause management, training over 300 providers to support survivors through virtual telehealth. We dive deep into the biggest myth plaguing women today—that ALL breast cancer survivors must avoid hormones forever—and she explains why that's simply not true for everyone. From the real truth about bioidentical hormones versus synthetic ones, to natural alternatives that actually work, to when testosterone might be safe, this conversation will arm you with the knowledge to have informed discussions with your healthcare team. Most importantly, you'll discover that suffering through treatment side effects isn't your only option. What you'll learn: Why "breast cancer is not breast cancer" and how different types affect hormone therapy decisions The real truth about bioidentical hormones versus the synthetic ones used in the Women's Health Initiative study Natural alternatives for managing hot flashes, sleep issues, and other menopause symptoms during cancer treatment How specific exercise protocols (including interval training) can actually help prevent cancer recurrence When vaginal estrogen might be safe even for hormone-positive breast cancer survivors Lifestyle factors that matter more than genetics for cancer prevention Why women with genetic mutations or family history can often still use hormone therapy How MIDI Health is revolutionizing care for cancer survivors in all 50 states Love the Podcast? Rachel Cook Northway shares with me her personal journey to clean beauty. Her childhood interest in skincare was already influenced by her mother's beauty routine. After an early career in the nonprofit sector, Rachel transitioned into the clean beauty industry and worked with various brands and retailers. And built her expertise and passion. When she was pregnant with her second child, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. This experience propelled her to launch her own business post-remission. Rachel is helping women (and men) to navigate and personalise the clean beauty space. Her beauty philosophy and recommendations are simple but efficient: focus on lips, eyes and underarms as key areas for clean product adoption. She emphasizes efficacy and plant-based alternatives in clean beauty. And has a range of brands that she recommends and curates for individual needs.Rachel also advocates for occasional breaks from deodorant use, especially for breast cancer survivors. Her daily rituals for her personal wellness and recovery are morning prayers, co-sleeping with her youngest child, intermittend fasting and a plant-basesd diet. And she is avid in her workout routine on 6 times per week. For her business she is planning on expanding into her own studio space to receive clients in person. She also feels that it is important to refine the language clean beauty, to emphasize wellness over appearance standards. Checking in after 2 years since I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer to share that recovery from the trauma of a diagnosis is possible. In the last episode I talked about inner strength that I use in managing my mindset as a survivor. The outlook of knowing I will be ok and controlling the things I am allowed to control does not restrict me from looking back at my recovery. This podcast is about sharing my story and advocating. The milestones of recovery from what makes up a diagnosis are important to reflect on, in my opinion. Since it is summer, I am going to my pool fairly often right now. I love how the water feels on my body and swimming has always been a therapeutic activity for me. So of course I went to my pool as soon as I could after my surgery (2 years ago). As I work to set goals in my life (also something I talked about in the last episode), I am planning more fun activities each week. Last week I met up at the pool with a few friends and neighbors. This pool time (alone or with friends) is what I call a “great escape”. It is not really an adventure but it takes me to such a different place the moment I enter the gates of the pool. I crave these moments away from all that makes up my life. In the pool (at the pool), it is a time to move in the water and release physical and emotional tension as I swim (usually very leisurely) up and down the lanes. Last week, when I was with my friends, we sat and ate chips and dip (definitely therapeutic) before going to kick and talk in the water. We had a lot of space to ourselves and it was a completely relaxing block of time. So as in last week's episode I talked about doing more than just going through the motions of each week in a month, year, etc., I share my experience of how this can be such a boost to keeping connected and having a positive outlook plus some fun during a day in my breast cancer life. I cannot say for sure if I would have found it so important to block out fun and intentionally plan my life ahead (for fun and function) if I had not been diagnosed with breast cancer. I do know that because of my breast cancer experience, I am grasping on to opportunities to have fun and connect with others, while also taking care of me with great intention. What happens when the healthcare system built to treat illness leaves you lost when the crisis is over?At just 23, Chloe Harrouche was diagnosed with breast cancer. The treatments were aggressive but clear. The aftermath? Total confusion. No roadmap, no coordinated care, no guidance on how to reclaim her health—just a system optimized for disease, not wellness. So, Chloe decided to build the healthcare experience she wished had existed for her.In this BS Free MD episode, Chloe shares her deeply personal story, the cracks she encountered in the traditional medical system, and how it led her to launch The Lanby, a concierge medicine practice that merges conventional primary care with evidence-based wellness—all under one roof. We dive into everything from siloed care and the supplement rabbit hole to the real costs of reactive medicine and how the right provider can help you proactively build resilience and longevity.Whether you're a physician, a patient, or somewhere in between, this episode will shift the way you think about modern healthcare. What We Cover:Chloe's journey from bioengineering to CEO after a shocking breast cancer diagnosisWhy the “standard of care” ends when you still have 50+ years of life to planThe illusion of choice in the wellness industry—and the danger of DIY health plansWhat a truly personalized, coordinated care team should look likeWhy more supplements ≠ better health—and how real food still mattersHow The Lanby is helping patients prioritize prevention without the insurance gameThoughts on GLP-1s, hormone health, longevity hacks, and AI in medicineChloe's call to action: Stop waiting for a diagnosis to take your health seriouslyAbout the GuestChloe Harrouche is the founder and CEO of The Lanby, a concierge medicine practice that integrates primary care and wellness under one roof. Diagnosed with breast cancer at 23, Chloe experienced first hand the challenges patients must overcome to take control of their health. The healthcare system, designed to treat illness rather than prevent it, offered no guidance on how to preserve fertility, restore hormone balance, or reduce the risk of recurrence. Like so many patients, she turned to the wellness industry for answers—but instead of finding clarity, she spiraled into restrictive diets, unsupervised biohacking, and mounting confusion. What followed was a years-long struggle with infertility that proved even more complex and emotionally taxing than her cancer diagnosis. Despite seeing the best specialists, Chloe's wellness efforts—though well-intentioned—were siloed and working against her. The experience laid bare the urgent need for a new model of primary care: one that blends the best of conventional medicine with evidence-based wellness, delivered by a coordinated care team that knows your history, your risks, and your goals. That vision became The Lanby—a modern practice designed to provide integrative, proactive, and personalized care. Chloe's mission is simple: to spare others the confusion, loneliness, and trial-and-error that defined her journey, and to build the kind of healthcare experience she wished existed when she needed it mostRapid Fire TakeawaysChloe's go-to wellness habits: walking outside + a weekly phone-free resetThe one question she wishes more patients would ask their care teamWhy “real” presence—digital and physical—still matters in healthcareResources & Links
Over 80% of patients referred to University Hospital Limerick for an appointment at a lung cancer clinic last year were seen within 10 days. Although this rate of 82% sounds encouraging, it was the lowest in the country when compared to Rapid Access Clinics in Dublin, Cork, Waterford and Galway and is well below the national target of 95%. According to the Irish Cancer Society, UHL's lowest level of compliance throughout the year in this regard was 60%. For more on this Alan Morrissey was joined by, Antoinette Baker Bashua, a HSE Regional Health Forum West member, and is also a Breast Cancer Survivor.

(Fremont County, WY) - John Glenn has spent the majority of his life being active, both on the job and in his personal life. However, the former forest service and BLM employee received news that stunned him seven years ago. "I felt a lump in my breast," John explained. He joked, "being a smart guy that I am, I went to doctor Google and looked into it." Ultimately John learned that men could indeed develop breast cancer, but their risk was much smaller than women. "So I blew it off, didn't think much of it." Over time though, things got worse. Glenn went to see a doctor about a year after the initial discovery and was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer that had spread to his lymph nodes. After receiving treatment from the University of Utah and assistance from Lander's Rocky Mountain Oncology, John is now able to declare he's been cancer-free for five years. In its 5th year, the Riverton Pink Ribbon 5K to benefit the Wyoming Breast Cancer Initiative has selected John as the Honorary Survivor. This year's event is Saturday, August 16th at the SageWest Riverton campus. Glenn joined us in the County 10 studio along with Rocky Mountain Oncology's Marty Brammer.
