Police doubted the credibility of Huskins and her boyfriend, Aaron Quinn, dismissing their ordeal as a hoax. The tide of the investigation dramatically shifts under Detective Misty Carausu's guidance, whose keen insight into a critical piece of evidence not only links Muller to this crime but also to a series of home invasions, ultimately leading to his capture.  Full Report: https://magazine.atavist.com/a-crime-beyond-belief-vallejo-kidnapping-gone-girl-hoax/ Stay Connected: Hosts: Thot, Jess, and Amanda. We are so grateful to have been able to speak with Denise Huskins.Far too often victims of assault are not believed. The story of what happened with Denise's kidnapping and assault is harrowing. However, in this chat Denise articulates that what happened next from law enforcement, the media and the public was worse.  In March 2015, in Vallejo, CA, Denise Huskins and her boyfriend Aaron Quinn awoke from a sound sleep when armed men bound and drugged them, and then abducted Denise. Aaron was warned not to call the police, or else Denise would be killed. Aaron trusted law enforcement and called the police to try and find Denise. But instead of searching for Denise, the police accused Aaron of her murder. They said that his story was just unbelievable. When Denise was released alive, the police turned their fire on her, dubbing her the "real-life 'Gone Girl'" who had faked her own kidnapping. In this chat Denise answers so many of our questions like: Why were you and Aaron targeted? If law enforcement thought your statements were too inconsistent and unreliable to believe you, then why were you later seen as a reliable witness in court?  Why have the other kidnappers not been pursued and prosecuted?  Did the police ever take accountability for their mistakes? We speak about Denise and Aaron having to decide whether to speak out publicly to clear their names of creating a hoax kidnapping OR be used as witnesses in court to help prosecute Matthew Muller.  We also discuss how Denise and Aaron were able to help each other heal and went on to get married and have two beautiful daughters. Denise is remarkably resilient. You can watch "American Nightmare' on Netflix or read Denise and Aaron's book here. Please note that this episode discusses violent and sexual assault. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GO STRAIGHT TO THE CRIME CONTENT, PLEASE CHECK THE RELEVANT TIMESTAMPS. (9:33) - Start Texas nurse Lacey Lyn Overby allegedly decided to help a homeless man on February 1, 2024 by buying him some food. She alleges that as she opened her car window to hand the food to him, he reached in, opened the door to her vehicle and abducted her. She managed to send a text to her daughter with their code words ‘purple pancakes', so her family knew she was in trouble. She also managed to text a description of her abductor. This man allegedly forced Lacey to drive hours to the Mexican border. Just before they got there, he told her to drive over the border for 20 miles. He then got out of the car. Lacey was found by authorities, waiting alone in her car, in line to cross the border.   Since Lacey's safe recovery, there have been no updates from police, leading many to speculate if this was a true abduction or not. In 2015, Denise Huskins was in bed asleep with her boyfriend Aaron Quinn in California. They were awoken with lasers being pointed on their wall. The couple were bound and their eyes were covered with blacked out goggles. Aaron was warned that if he called police, there would be consequences. Denise was then abducted. Two days later, Denise's abductor released her outside of her family home. Police did not believe Aaron and Denise's stories and accused them publicly of lying and wasting police resources. The couple eventually received a multi-million dollar settlement when their story was proven to be true and a man was arrested. In a chilling turn of events reminiscent of a Hollywood thriller, the kidnapping of Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn has now become the central focus of a Netflix docuseries, "American Nightmare." The harrowing tale unfolded in the early hours of March 23, 2015, and has since captivated audiences worldwide with its astonishing twists and turns. On that fateful night, an intruder infiltrated Aaron Quinn's home in the San Francisco Bay Area while he and his girlfriend, Denise Huskins, were present. The assailant, armed with a fake gun, bound and blindfolded the couple, forcing them to consume a sedative. He further terrorized them with a pre-recorded message, claiming to be part of a professional group collecting financial debts and threatening violence if they didn't comply with his demands. Huskins was forcibly taken away in a vehicle, while Quinn received ransom demands for $17,000. However, the ransom was never paid. Quinn, grappling with fear for his girlfriend's safety, finally reported the incident to the police later that day. Inexplicably, the Vallejo police, according to a subsequent lawsuit filed by the couple against the City of Vallejo and its police force, dismissed their claims, accusing Quinn of killing Huskins and concocting an elaborate story. Quinn was subjected to an 18-hour interrogation and a lie-detector test, during which he was falsely told he had failed. This disbelief and mistreatment would set the stage for a bizarre and tragic chain of events. Two days after Huskins's abduction, Vallejo police publicly declared that they believed the couple had fabricated the entire story, with Lt. Kenny Park accusing them of wasting valuable resources and causing fear within the community. Criminal charges were even hinted at. However, the story took an eerie turn when the San Francisco Chronicle received a series of emails claiming to be from Huskins's kidnapper. The emails contained "proof of life" messages and intricate details about the abduction that only the couple and their abductor would know. It was later confirmed that these emails had indeed originated from Huskins's kidnapper. The breakthrough in this perplexing case came months later when officers from the Dublin Police Services arrested Matthew Muller, a Harvard-trained attorney and former U.S. marine, during an unrelated investigation. Evidence found at Muller's South Lake Tahoe home linked him to the kidnapping. An FBI investigation uncovered disturbing videos of Muller sexually assaulting Huskins while she was blindfolded. In 2017, Muller was sentenced to 40 years in prison for his heinous crimes. Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn finally received the validation they had sought, but the emotional scars remained. In March 2016, the couple filed a federal lawsuit against the City of Vallejo, accusing them of a "vicious and shocking attack" on them and creating a media frenzy by accusing them of faking the crime. The City of Vallejo later settled for $2.5 million, but it wasn't until 2021 that Vallejo police publicly apologized for their treatment of the couple. Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn, who married in 2018, have embarked on a journey of healing and redemption. They underwent therapy to rebuild their lives, resumed their careers as physical therapists, and even co-authored a book about their harrowing experience. Despite the closure brought by Muller's conviction, the couple still grapples with unanswered questions. As Huskins stated, "We're never going to get the answers. We've had a long road of trying to accept that." In a chilling turn of events reminiscent of a Hollywood thriller, the kidnapping of Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn has now become the central focus of a Netflix docuseries, "American Nightmare." The harrowing tale unfolded in the early hours of March 23, 2015, and has since captivated audiences worldwide with its astonishing twists and turns. We've had a long road of trying to accept that." Aaron Quinn and his girlfriend, Denise Huskins, were woken up by armed intruders and a voice saying, “Wake up, this is a robbery.” The intruders were wearing wetsuits, and placed blacked out goggles on Aaron and Denise's eyes and headphones on their ears playing recorded messages. They were bound with zip ties and dragged into the closet before being drugged, all before the intruders kidnapped Denise for ransom. The next day when Aaron finally called 911 and he was taken into the police station, he quickly realized something was not right, as police were now trying to frame him for the murder of his girlfriend, Denise Huskins. The story of Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn is highlighted in an upcoming Netflix Documentary called ‘American Nightmare', set to air on 1/17/24. We're so excited to be back! This week, we're talking about the kidnapping of Denise Huskins. In the middle of the night on March 22, 2015, a group of broke into the home of Aaron Quinn and kidnapped his girlfriend, Denise Huskins. Aaron's story involved kidnappers wearing wet suits who played pre-recorded messages and wanted very little ransom for Denise's return. His story seemed so unbelievable to police, who were convinced early on that Aaron had done something to Denise. When that seemed unlikely, they formed a new theory: that Denise had never been kidnapped, and she was actually the real life Gone Girl.
