On a Friday afternoon in 1972, in the small town of Faraday, Victoria, 10-year-old Robyn Howarth was playing musical chairs with her classmates when something unexpected caught her eye. She turned to the classroom door and saw two men standing there—one wearing a black mask, the other with dark sunglasses and a hat. The taller man raised an enormous gun, aiming it at Robyn, her five classmates, and their 20-year-old teacher, Mary Gibbs. As Mary desperately pleaded with them, the men ordered everyone to "get in the van... now." More than 50 years later, Robyn has written a book, Faraday: A Community Rediscovered, where she recounts, in vivid detail, the traumatic events that unfolded that day. For decades, she has kept her story to herself—until now. You can buy Robyn's book here. I worry about what's ahead, but I have a shepherd who prepares a table before me, so I wait, trust and see. A friend recently sent a job offering to me. It was to come to a town called Echuca in Victoria Australia and be a snake catcher. Yes, you read it right. Snake catcher. My friend works in a local school as a caretaker and part of his job is to make sure the school grounds and buildings are safe for the children. So he regularly is on the lookout for snakes. He clears away areas that snakes might want to live in. Nets and fences are installed to stop snakes from entering the school grounds. He prepares a safe place for little children. I like this illustration. It's a picture of providential care. Have you ever had someone prepare somewhere safe for you? Say you are going to visit Aunt Mildred and you're going to stay the night. She will most likely prepare in advance. She may make the bed, prepare some food, and get rid of any snakes! (especially if you live in Australia) When you arrive, you are welcomed into what they have prepared. You may feel a little embarrassed by the fuss they have put into this welcome. But you feel cared for, loved, and welcomed.

Animals have my heart. Period. When their true nature and innocence are taken advantage of, disregarded and used for pleasure, entertainment, food convenience and money, my soul breaks. Something breaks inside me.A pig at MIDLAND BACON PIGGERY in Victoria Australia has been sexually assaulted by a male, the farm owners son in fact. @dominionmovement are doing their best to free Olivia the pig, @changedotorg have a petition to sign to apply pressure to surrender her so she can be taken into the hands of kindness and care.Factory farmed animals have little regard in the legal system and therefore protection because they are seen as food and money makers. I get that farmers hands are often tied by the bigger corporations but to have farmers (humans) use their power against an innocent and confined animal quite literally fucks with my face.We as consumers actually have the power to question where what we eat comes from and the lives those animals have lived. And we should, because green washing is peaking off its head. At the end of our forks are lives that have been lived, or, have been abused. As you ponder this, and I really urge you to, please sign the petition in my stories or in my linktree to save Olivia and email rickoreilly@bigpond.com.au, the owner of MIDLAND BACON PIGGERY to surrender Olivia. She, Olivia the pig, like all of us, has a right to know what kindness, freedom and living looks and feels like.Sign this petition to apply pressure to release Olivia. “Brae is funny in the sense that it's a very small farm if you're a farmer, it's an enormous farm if you're a restaurateur. We're super proud of everything that we produce and we do so in a way that's very holistic and very clean. They all have serious value to us and they turn into products which are very valuable in the sense that they're made with care, they're high quality, they're organic and so, we love those things.” We're in great company with Chef Dan Hunter, Founder and Owner of Brae, a restaurant, organic farm and boutique accommodation nestled in the hillside of the Otways hinterland in Australia. Here, Chef Dan, his family and friends have stewarded this landscape and refined an innovative approach to sustainable and ethical production, to offer a unique Australian cuisine built around an immense respect for nature, place and seasonality. In this episode, Chef Dan brings us on a reminiscing journey as Brae celebrates its 10 Year Anniversary. Hear how he recalls how his Australian upbringing rooted in nature paired with his world travels experiencing cooking at the source instead of in cities, inspired him to bring that approach to hospitality back home, but with a taste that is unique to Brae and their sense of place. Well deserving of their recently awarded 3 Star certification by The Sustainable Restaurant Association and long-held 3 Hats by Australia's Good Food Guide, among numerous other accolades and recognitions - we'll raise our glasses to that! Top Takeaways [1:50] With no particular interest in food growing up, yet with an intrinsic love of nature as many Australians do, it was not until Chef Dan and his wife Jules moved to a small town in Spain where he saw the importance of regionality in his cooking, something he felt the fine dining scene in Australia was missing. [9:45] What started as a circle drawn on a map and a checklist of criteria, brought Chef Dan to the Otways hinterland in Victoria - an area which attracts international guests for its coastal landmarks, scenic walks and waterfalls, and at once dinosaur-inhabited rainforests. [21:00] “It's pretty nice to be able to produce enough product for ourselves and to give some to friends, but to work on projects where you can eat the property, drink the property…” Chef Dan explains what guests can see, sip and savor on his working farm. [26:25] Even with “farm to table” restaurants taking over cities, we're quite removed from the source of our local agricultural practices and thus Chef Dan has many creative ways to transparently share his land with his guests. [36:10] How the 6 suites at Brae mimic Chef Dan's attention to detail in his cooking - from the vinyl record player and cozy sitting area to the organic skincare beside the bathtub, from the stars seen through the skylight to the self-serve martini bar. [45:35] Can a single salad really be made with 60 different ingredients rotating every single day? Hear how no two plates, no two bites, will ever be the same. Residents in rural Victoria are bracing for further flooding this morning as the Australian state is pummelled by record-breaking rain Some areas have received three-months of rainfall in a 24-hour period. The town of Rochester, which was almost wiped out by floods in 2022, is still under threat from floodwaters with homes expected to be affected. Residents in Seymour, Yea and Bendigo were told to evacuate on Monday afternoon. RNZ's Australian correspondent Phil Kafcaloudes spoke to Charlotte Cook from Melbourne.
In PX112, our interview guest is Jessica Lee, a principal architect at Fender Katsalidis Architects (https://fkaustralia.com). Jessica discusses the ‘Alba' project, the conversion of a 1970's former office building into 150 rooms of age appropriate housing (retirement accommodation and aged care). The site is located within South Melbourne, an inner city suburb in Melbourne, Victoria Australia. The cost of the conversion was $125m (AU). Whilst not being significantly cheaper than a rebuild there were environmental savings according to Jessica. In the interview Jessica discusses the project from start to finish. There was the initial ‘whats the building like', ‘'whats under the surfaces', to scoping the logistics of conversions (very different from a vacant site), finding a suitable builder (not all high rise builders have the equipment or skill set to do this type of work), services upgrades and the intricate details of providing contemporary residential accommodation (along with the end user needs). Jessica indicates that a review of the Melbourne CBD found only 6% of sites are candidates for such conversions. Frequent killers of such projects are the depth of a site and the position of lift cores, the reasons being apartments need natural light unlike office buildings. Also the ‘bones' of a structure building in terms of structure and floor to floor heights may not be suitable. Applying contemporary safety and environmental standards are also difficult to satisfy. The interview explores the design concept as well as the 'nuts and bolts' and up close descriptions of the building project. At times it is like being on site mid project with hard hat, boots and vest. The conversion of office buildings to residential has been touted in many planning publications and strategies as a solution to various housing crisis. The interview reveals that such conversions are possible but not many sites are suitable and there are specialist requirements in undertaking the challenge. Jessica provides a clear eyed view of a not well understood issue. One insight from the interview is that blanket planning policies or government subsidies promoting such conversions at the expense of complete rebuilds may not be cost effective, environmentally benefical or practical. More about our interview guest - the FK Architecture website has the following profile of Jessica: “Led by her boundless passion for architecture, Jess has become a highly regarded principal at Fender Katsalidis. Since her early days with the practice, she has always displayed a penchant for planning and design development. Fifteen years on, she has blossomed into the quintessential modern architect and exudes the winning culture and ethos that FK represents. With unwavering tenacity, Jess completed her architecture studies at RMIT with honours and landed a job documenting projects at Fender Katsalidis soon after. Her ability to assimilate multiple viewpoints into buildable realities honours the firm's design intent, quickly and to the highest quality. These valued traits have brought her quite gratification, as well as renown to the firm. As a student of the built environment, Jess is constantly striving to bring architecture back to the notion of it being human centric; and in particular, within the seniors living sector. That enduring resilience within her continues to result in good design being accessible to more people from all walks of life.” A terrific interview subject with a great passion for buildings, cities and life. For the last few years, an increasing number of agents have been messaging me with questions about their career options and in particular, the importance of the 'brand' they work with.In the last ten years, the steady rise of cloud-based real estate corporations has challenged the traditional model of salespeople being employed by a real estate company working out of a brick-and-mortar office. This new digitally remote model has not only allowed agents to establish and promote their own personal brand but also enjoy a greater slice of the commission pie. These days, cloud-based digital brands provide much of the heavy lifting in terms of back-office support for their member agents including trust accounting (where laws call for that) and supplying an ever-widening range of tech tools like coaching, mentoring and training, marketing platforms, CRMs and lead generation workstations leaving the agent to focus on the dollar-productive activities of getting in front of more sellers and doing more deals. This recent visit back to Victoria Australia to spend time with friends and family gave me the opportunity to catch up with my brother Tim and we decided to record a couple of interviews for the show.Tim is something of a brand guru. Today he consults to a list of private clients but his former career path saw him deeply involved with brands like Nike, Mattel, and Krispy Kreme. In 2022 he published his personal branding strategies and success formulas in a book titled 'YourAmazing Brand Story'In this episode, Tim and I get nicely into the weeds of effective branding and how agents can best reach out to potential clients in their community by telling their brand story and standing out in a 'sea' of other agents and making emotional connections by deciding then telling their brand story. There' some really valuable points in this short session. Grab your journal for the good bits. Enjoy! R

Lard Ass was founded by Monica Cavarsan, a dairy farmer's daughter who grew up in Western Victoria, Aus surrounded by the creamy goodness of fresh milk and churned butter. Proud of her Italian heritage where food was grown and sourced locally, and growing up with her 6 brothers and sisters helping Mum, Bertilla and Dad, Tony manage the family farm, Lard Ass grew out of a yearning for simple, goodness bringing back great taste in butter.Monica and Lard Ass values the simple, age-old approach to creating tasty, creamy butter using European imported cultures. She single batch churns cream that is ripened to produce a flavour that is both rich and creamy. With a high butterfat content, Lard Ass cultured butter is ideal for cooking, baking or simply devouring on fresh sourdough or crackers. Julie Cameron and husband Sandy are the producers behind the famous Meredith Dairy. A household name in Australia, Meredith Dairy has roots in Sheep Farming, but in 1991 the economic climate meant they had to pivot into producing cheeses and other dairy items. The rest as they say... is history. Now, over 30 years later Meredith Dairy is a vertically integrated organisation with both sheep and goats contributing to their success. Their story however now expands worldwide and has seen them win and collect many accolades along their journey - and not just for the product they are creating - but also for the way they are going about producing with a focus on sustainability, animal welfare and land stewardship. Priding herself on responsible farming, in this podcast we chat a little about cheese but more about how the cheese itself is a vessel to ensure the farm and land that Julie is looking after is passed on to the next generation as an economically viable and environmentally sustainable business. Flower Farmer and florist…. a match made in heaven? This week we are joined by two guests; one flower farmer and one florist who have mastered the art of working collaboratively to benefit all parties; themselves; their clients and the environment.Mardi is the dreamer behind Quite Contrary Flower Farm - a micro flower farm on the edge of West Gippsland. At QC Flower Farm they grow good flowers. They do things differently, using organic and regenerative methods, to bring you gorgeous sustainable flowers that you can feel good about. Their specialty crops are Dahlias and Garden Roses, with a focus on romantic David Austins, though they also offer an additional rotating roster of seasonal blooms. From time to time they also offers seeds, dahlia tubers, and plants to Quite Contrary Gardeners.Pepperberry flora are Ruth and Sally (She/her). They are partners in love and work, with a fascination for design, interiors, fashion and photography, and for flowers of course. They construct bold and exciting arrangements and installations with a vibrant mix of their personalities. For the two of them; it's about looking past the obvious and appreciating a form for its line, texture and colouring. The duo have been on a journey rethinking their ways and venturing towards more sustainable practices in both design and business model. We're excited to share their insights on working together and collaborating for the greater good. A model we think should be explored by anyone that can.Hosts: Jayde Timms & Sam Baff from Grown Not FlownGuests: Mardi from Quite Contrary Flower Farm & Sally from Pepperflora Website: www.quitecontraryflowerfarm.com & www.pepperberryflora.comInstagram: @qcflowerfarm & @pepperberryflora

True story! Mike's hand rested gently on Brendan Hunt's (aka Coach Beard from Ted Lasso) butt for roughly 3-5 seconds. A moment he will always remember and one Brendan may wish to forget. Join us in this episode for this and other stories from our time in the great Australian state of Victoria during our travels for Women's World Cup 2023. We spot some koalas in their natural habitat, some kangaroos in a particularly peculiar place, and expand our footy experiences at one of the greatest Aussie rules football matches the AFL has seen this season! Speaking of which, we may have butchered the explanation of the ending of that game. Bombers were up by 1, then down by 5, but then... well, listen to the episode to find out! Foot(y)notes: If you're curous about the AFL after hearing this one, check out the truest professional 'footy' league in the world. This is where to guarantee yourself a kangaroo sighting. And here's where to start your koala 'hunting' adventure. Drive further up the road at your leisure.
Many thanks to SRAA contributor, Dan Greenall, who shares the following recording and notes:Broadcaster: Time signal station VNG Lyndhurst Victoria AustraliaDate of recording: December 13, 1971Frequency: 4.500 MHzRecption location: Ancaster, Ontario, CanadaReceiver and antenna: Hallicrafters S-52 using a longwire antennaMode: AMNotes: Recorded on December 13, 1971, here is the announcement given by station VNG in Lyndhurst, Victoria, Australia transmitting with 10 kw on 4.5 MHz shortwave. This station was active from 1964 to 1987. Receiving location was Ancaster, Ontario, Canada. Amazingly, the recording was made on a cheap Demonstration Musicassette that had tape placed over the ends so it could be reused. It still plays today and was used to produce this digital version. The announcement is given twice and goes: "This is an Australian Post Office standard frequency and time signal transmission from VNG, Lyndhurst, Victoria on 4.5, 7.5, or 12 Megahertz." This was given during the 15th, 30th, 45th and 60th minute of each hour according to their QSL card.
The Big Housing Build is a social housing plan to build 10,000 new and affordable homes across regional Victoria. Victoria's population of 6.7 million in March 2023 is forecast to grow to 11.2 million by 2056. The state's exponential population growth coupled with issues of homelessness, the growing social housing waiting list, and rising costs of housing and living, act as the driving forces behind the Big Housing Build. Australian politician Sheena Watt, who serves in the Victorian Legislative Council for Northern Metropolitan Region since 2020, discusses the Big Housing Build in Victoria, Australia. Watt is the first Indigenous Australian woman to represent the Australian Labor Party in the Parliament of Victoria. She is the point person to talk to for the housing build across Victoria. This episode of Our Homes is hosted by Ian Ross.
This week's guest on the Bees with Ben podcast is Helen Charles from friendswithhoney.com.au. Helen is passionate about educating people about bees and has recently been working on a community project to encourage bees in a permaculture garden. She even roped in the local men's shed in Brighton East to help construct the hives, and apparently the men had a ball! Helen explains that she has always been interested in nature and was introduced to bees by family members in Canada who run a commercial beekeeping enterprise. She was also into gardening and noticed a lot of bees in her area; she joined a local beekeeping club, got some bees from Ben, and hasn't looked back! She says she loves the fact that she is always learning. Helen's website, friendswithhoney.com.au, extols the principals of biodiversity, sustainability, pollination and citizen science, and is devoted to developing and delivering programs, experiences, events and workshops that link these themes with beekeeping. She explains to Ben that citizen science is all about offering the power of science to people and allowing members of the public to make a contribution. She has been working on an app called inaturalist that allows the user to upload data, which is then analyzed and added to the Atlas of Living Australia, an important tool for scientists and land managers. New species have even been identified through this process. Helen obviously loves sharing her knowledge of bees; she is also a certified permaculture designer and the list of programs and events on the friendswithhoney website include a course on basic beekeeping and a series of workshops entitled the ‘Powerful Pollinators Program'. A ‘Bee for biodiversity workshop' examines the differences between native bees and introduced bees, as well as delving into the history of the honey bee in Australia and detailing how to support our hard- working pollinators. Along with her hives in suburbia, Helen also has an apiary in regional Victoria at Amphitheatre in the Goldfields region, which is located on rural conservation land. Unlike urban Melbourne, where there is a relatively constant supply of floral resources, Helen says this presents somewhat of a challenge in rural Victoria, and she has been busy planting native species of vegetation that will create resources for the bees to forage on throughout the year, her main goal being pollination rather than honey production. Finally, Helen and her partner Ben - who is an award-winning country singer and musician – have a very special event planned for World Bee Day on May 20. They have been composing some cool songs about bees and are performing a special kids' show at the Arcobar at 10:00am (located at 8 Arco Lane, Heatherton). This free special event should be a blast, so get along and have a waggle dance with Helen and Ben! Further details at the www.friendswithhoney.com.au website or at arcobar.com.au

May is here and, with it, another strange pair of cases for our team at All Night with the Living Geeks to investigate. This month we look at The Bairnsdale Pole...the bizarre sighting of a pole-shaped creature in Bairnsdale, Victoria Australia on the morning of the Moon Landing...and The Bearer of Bad News...a case of a UFO taking over control of a car in upstate New York, dragging it through a field, and then telling the driver that an acquaintance had died in a truck accident. And he actually had! Why don't we all get our news via UFO encounters?

There has been an epidemic of burnout unfolding over the last few years. Rates of burnout and job dissatisfaction have skyrocketed; employees report exhaustion, lower motivation, and feeling a lack of purpose in their work. This has pervaded more than just the workplace: people broadly report feeling more fatigued, anxious, depressed, and lonely than perhaps ever before. The need to tend to ourselves in a deep, restorative way is absolutely crucial. Yet this is difficult to do. Our guest today knows this from the inside out. Rachael Bonetti is a corporate trainer, international speaker, podcast host, writer, wellbeing practitioner, and former executive assistant. For 27 years she worked in the corporate trenches partnering with some of the best minds in business: change makers, entrepreneurs, thought leaders, billionaires and high profile business leaders - the 1%. In 2021, after wrestling with her own journey through burnout, she stepped away from her corporate career to focus on teaching others how to integrate wellness into their lives. She offers practical and accessible strategies for individuals and organizations to sustain high performance while still prioritizing well-being. In this episode we cover: -Rachael's unique experience of 200+ days of lockdown in the Victoria (Australia) area; the emotional and social effects this created in her community; and how companies are attempting (or should consider attempting) to make adaptations. -Rachael's personal experience with burnout and how she cultivated a daily wellness practice. -The experience of feeling unheard or ignored by doctors and Rachael's untraditional approach to healing. -Practical steps for carving out protected time for self-care. -Wayapa Wuurrk meditation - what is it, how it connects us to nature, how it honors and incorporates indigenous wisdom, and how it can be used in the workplace. -Negotiating wellness, autonomy, and empowerment in our workplaces. This week we have another lesser-known case from Victoria Australia. One where there is no true justice but a killer is revealed.
Located in Victoria, Australia, Stephen is a Career Empowerment Coach who is passionate about helping professionals of all genders reach their personal and professional goals. He also hosts The Unearthed Man Podcast, which is a platform that enables him to have open, honest conversations with men who are on their own personal journey of self-discovery. The Podcast's objective is to empower men to open up in all their vulnerability and to tell their stories. To date, this has resulted in many men sharing previous traumas and experiences that they have never shared before. At times, there are a number of "aha" moments as we delve into those stories and old belief systems.Website: https://www.stephenmilverton.com/
