It's a bit of a cliché to say that we live in uncertain times. Just look at the headlines. Relationships — from the global to the intimate — are fraying. We swim in waters full of fear and worry, contempt and disdain. Anxiety abounds. That's why today's guest — writer and cultural commentator, Sara Billups — has written a new book. It's called “Nervous Systems: Spiritual Practices to Calm Anxiety in Your Body, the Church and Politics.” It's out now and — spoiler alert — Billups writes quite a bit about Ignatian spirituality. She looks to Ignatius' all-important idea of holy indifference as a way of approaching the anxiety-inducing moment in which we all find ourselves. You may recall that when Ignatius says “indifference,” he's not promoting a lifestyle that is apathetic or callous to the signs of the times. Rather, Ignatius wants us to let go of how we want things to go and to instead allow God's Spirit to use us as they Spirit wills. In short, God's ways are not our ways; so, let's put aside our preferences and discover God's. In addition to this new book, “Nervous Systems,” Billups has bylines in the New York Times and Christianity Today. She completed a Doctor of Ministry in the Sacred Art of Writing at Peterson Cetner for the Christian Imagination at Western Theological Seminary. She writes a Substack called “Bitter Scroll” and hosts a podcast called “That's the Spirit.” You can learn more about Sara and her work by exploring the links below. Southside Tribe! In this next episode, we dive a bit deeper into why developing the discipline of reading isn't just an intellectual hobby for bookworms — it's a spiritual practice of love, patience, and seeking truth. Pulling from real-life ministry moments, cultural tensions, and biblical wisdom, Trip, KB and Ameen explore how rushed, shallow engagement is fracturing communities, fueling suspicion, and eroding our witness. From immigration misconceptions to conspiracy culture, and even some satanic panic, we unpack how slowing down to actually learn about people — and from people — is a form of Christian love. We talk about the gym-like journey of growing in knowledge, why motives matter, and how repetition, and steady formation shape us more deeply than quick hits of information ever could. Intimate Conversations
The Sacred Art of Masculine Sexual Energy with Dan DeSena

Intimate Conversations

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 20, 2025 66:34

Dan DeSena is a transformational guide helping men achieve authentic growth. I asked Dan about his approach to teaching men about self-pleasure, sexual health, and emotional resilience. We spoke of the sacredness of sex as a spiritual practice, our personal experiences with energy-based orgasms.  Dan expanded on his journey from growing up in a religious family with restrictive views on sexuality to finding sacred sexuality work with John Wineland, which helped him integrate his masculinity and leadership qualities. He's learned to embrace his "darkness" and dominant energy while keeping his heart open, understanding that conscious women sense a man's true strength and authenticity. Dan emphasized that authentic leadership and dominance are not toxic when approached with love and awareness, and he now helps men navigate these aspects of their sexuality while maintaining emotional connection. Dan emphasized the importance of presence and conscious awareness during sexual experience, explaining how many men are trained to feel shame or anxiety about self-pleasure from a young age, leading to negative patterns in their sexual experiences. Dan shared his own journey of retraining his nervous system to practice self-pleasure without relying on fantasy or porn, and he advised men to focus on subtle pleasure and to make conscious choices about when to ejaculate. He also discussed how learning to be present during self-pleasure can improve sexual experiences with partners, as women often desire emotional connection and presence rather than just physical performance. Dan shared about the importance of a safe space for men to talk about sex and being honest with partners about sexual challenges while committing to personal growth and healing. Dan shared his own experience of ending a long-term relationship due to incompatible paths in addressing sexual issues, but stressed that honesty and personal work are crucial steps forward. Dan and I discussed our personal journeys of self-love and sexual awakening, embracing our vulnerability, authenticity, presence and developing self-compassion. I shared my experience personally and with clients- the interconnectedness of a fulfilling sex life with overall relationship satisfaction and the ripple effect of these qualities into other life areas. We both expressed a deep longing for a life where every interaction is infused with sacredness and love! As we discussed the sacredness of sex and the importance of treating it as a spiritual practice, Dan shared his experiences with cultivating sexual energy and having full-body orgasms, the concept of orgasm beyond ejaculation, and discussing how men can learn to control and direct their sexual energy.  It was so fun to explore hypothetical scenarios and share personal stories. On After The Show on Patreon, Dan revealed that his mother gave him a sex education talk when he was 10 years old, after he expressed admiration for Michael Jackson's song "Billie Jean." We danced and enjoyed our full self-expression and even got a taste of Dan demonstrating a full body orgasm on After the Show- a first! Dan explained the concept of a full-body orgasm, describing how to move energy through the body during sexual experiences. They agreed that presence and awareness are key to enjoying these experiences without losing connection with a partner. Discover more on Dan's site DanDeSena.com ➡️ Go check out patreon.com/allanapratt for Exclusive content! About Dan:   A respected guide in transformational work, Dan brings a grounded approach to personal mastery that resonates with men seeking authentic growth. Drawing from his rich background as a psychotherapist, musician, teacher, speaker, group leader, and healer, he creates brave spaces where men discover deeper confidence, purpose, and presence. His work transcends surface-level development, addressing the foundational elements of masculine identity while challenging outdated notions that no longer serve us. With a passionate commitment to transforming how men think about sexuality, confidence, masculinity, success, and happiness, he offers a refreshingly honest perspective on what true fulfillment looks like. Through practical wisdom and transformative practices, he guides men to embrace emotional intelligence alongside inner strength. Known for his direct communication style and compassionate approach, he meets men exactly where they are—no judgment, no shame tactics, just honest conversation and real tools for change. His philosophy centers on the belief that true confidence stems from self-mastery and emotional resilience. In this solo episode, I invite you to rethink everything you've believed about selfishness and see it instead as a sacred practice of self-respect. From examining how we've traded depth for digital speed, to how Frederick Douglass risked his life to read, and why even fiction can renew our imagination and empathy, this convo is packed with depth. They share stories about how to learn to love reading, the importance of learning from the past generations while passing down wisdom to the next generations, and how “the kingdom is slow” — because growth, understanding, and faith all take time. October 1923: The BBC's on-air critics go national... These aren't critics OF the BBC (there were - and are - plenty of those), but critics ON the BBC - a literary critic, a music critic, a drama critic, a film critic... Think Front Row, Barry Norman, The Old Grey Whistle Test, but decades earlier. These weekly shows went national via simultaneous broadcasting - SB - and the BBC's London-centric regular programming started to take over the regional schedules. On London 2LO from 14 June 1923 - and nationally on Thursdays from 18 October - was music critic Percy Scholes. On London 2LO from 18 July - and nationally on Fridays from 19 October - was film critic G.A. Atkinson ('Seen on the Screen'). On London 2LO from 8 August - and nationally on Wednesdays from 17 October - was drama critic Archibald Haddon ('News and Views of the Theatre'), and later James Agate. On London 2LO from 3 September - and nationally on Mondays from 15 October - was literary critic John Strachey. And in more recent years, we add comedy criticism to the list - with some comedy writers. James Cary has written BBC sitcoms for TV and radio, inc his own Bluestone 42, Hut 33, Think the Unthinkable, and for others Miranda, My Hero, My Family and more. Guest sermon by Josh Scott, Lead Pastor at Gracepointe Church in Nashville   One thing progressives and conservatives undeniably share is this: we all cherry-pick the Bible. It's an unavoidable reality that we gravitate toward certain passages and stories while overlooking or even rejecting others. If that's the case, then the question isn't whether we cherry-pick — but how we do it. Can we acknowledge this fact and still approach Scripture in ways that are rooted in integrity? And could there be a way in which “cherry-picking” becomes not a flaw, but something thoughtful — even sacred?

Icons, Conversion, And A Life ReframedWe trace Sdn Michael Roeder's path from ministry and publishing to iconographer and the deaconate, exploring how a single purchase grew into a collection, a craft, and a new spiritual home. Along the way we unpack technique, tradition, and why icons feel like windows that also watch.Join us for this Cloud of Witnesses exclusive, a presentation on an iconographer's journey from faith, to art, to transcendence, to Orthodoxy, given only once at Point Loma Nazarene University, Thursday, October 2nd, at 7 p.m. (PDT).  • early family loss, blended roots, and resilient confidence• first icon purchase and the pull toward sacred art• retirement, workshops, and apprenticeship in iconography• Orthodoxy's phronema and full-senses worship• travel to Russia, Wales, and encounters with living tradition• making, gilding, and finishing techniques for icons• how tradition guides creativity without distortion• parish life, service, and supporting church iconographers• collecting ethics, provenance, and legacy questions• why the eyes of saints communicate love and peaceWhat if a single image could rearrange your life? Michael Rader joins us to share how buying one modest icon opened a door to two hundred more, years of study and apprenticeship, and a surprising call to serve as a subdeacon. We follow his path from youth ministry and publishing into the world of egg tempera, gold leaf, incense, and chant—learning how beauty can teach as deeply as books and how a tradition can expand the heart without abandoning the mind.We talk about the phronema—the Orthodox way of seeing—and why the liturgy engages every sense: candles and incense for scent, chant and bells for sound, processions and prostrations for the body, and a calendar that binds communities across continents. Michael explains how icons are made, from gessoed boards and warm red bole beneath leaf to fine painted gold for intricate lines. He shares the craft realities of commissions, timelines, and finishing, and the guardrails that keep iconography faithful to theology while still leaving room for personal skill and nuance.Travel stories from Russia and Wales bring the tradition to life: cathedrals heavy with color, Rublev's Trinity looming with quiet power, and small wooden churches radiant without marble or gold. We explore collecting with conscience, the peace guests feel in a home lined with saints, and a simple test from a trusted dealer: look into the eyes and see whether the love of God looks back. That gaze, Michael says, is what drew him deeper—past analysis, into adoration. Press play to meet the saints, learn the craft, and consider how sacred art might reshape your prayer, your space, and your week.Enjoyed the conversation? What does it really mean to practice yoga not just once in a while, but again and again, across years, through resistance, joy, boredom, and transformation? In this episode, Kino and Tim explore the deeper meaning of abhyāsa, the Sanskrit word often translated as “practice,” but whose roots reveal something far more enduring: the committed, intentional act of returning. They weave this with the concept of bhāvanā, the inner cultivation of the heart and mind, drawn from early Buddhist teachings. Through stories from the Ashtanga method and personal reflections on the power of repetition, Kino and Tim share how practice is not about performance or perfection, but about shaping who we become through presence. This episode is an invitation to see practice not as a means to an end, but as the path itself. The pose is not the point. Returning is the point. Cultivating presence, breath by breath, day by day, becomes the living path of yoga. When we stop running and return to the moment, we remember, this is the place we never truly left. DescriptionA picture is worth a thousand words. We know that saying very well, and it's, it's really true. In fact, I was just on a call with a colleague from across the country earlier this week and you know, when you're on, or Zoom and, and you're talking to one another and you're trying to describe what it is that you're planning on or thinking, and if there's a document or even better kind of an image or a diagram that kind of lays out what you're describing, you wanna say just like, well, hey, can I just show you?You know, can I just share my screen? I'm sure you've been there and after I shared my screen. Then everything kind of made sense. I was able to explain it better. The other person was able to see it better, uh, not you know, listening to me describe it, but actually to see it on paper. Really made the difference.And,. I think the same thing can be true in Catholic talks and in particular how we might employ the beauty, the evangelizing. Beauty of sacred art. Today I want to dig into how and why we might use sacred art in our talks. Here's an image of the bronze sculpture that made such an impact on me at the Vatican Museumshttps://www.everypixel.com/image-12179653852684922977LinksFor more information about the Better Preach Podcast visit: www.ryanohara.org/betterpreachBetter Preach Podcast is now on YouTube. Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matt 11:28. Our world is wired for stress, for activity, not for being sedentary.  When we live in a chronic state of stress, we feel exhausted and stuck.  What does it mean to simply rest and be beloved by God and know how to rest in Christ!? Jenny's guest shares how stress affects us and offers practical ways to decompress and focus on our inner self.  Anna Christine (A.C.) Seiple,  is a Licensed Counselor and Author of The Sacred Art of Slowing Down;  Find Relief from Rushed Living, Soothe Your Soul, and Restore Wholeness Within. She reminds us we are human beings, not “doing beings!” With all going on in our lives and the world, is it any wonder we are stressed?! Seiple encourages us to make deliberate decisions to tune in to what's happening in our bodies because this also impacts our spiritual, emotional, and physical wellbeing. We constantly move through a mixture of emotions in life—everything from fear, joy, pain, surprise, grief, rest, and panic” says Seiple. “These can overwhelm us. Freeze us. We can't stop the complexities of life from being messy.” But, we can make some changes! You can get connected with Anna at her website acseiple.com  and you can find more about her book. Can you let yourself feel good? Like, really good... in your body, in your life, in your truth? In this live recording from the Body Transformation Retreat in Bali, Chantelle Raven invites us into a deeper reckoning with what it truly means to expand our capacity for pleasure. So often on the healing path we focus on pain, shadows, trauma, but what happens when life offers you joy, love, beauty, and Eros? Can your nervous system hold that too? This isn't just about bliss. It's about reparenting your body to trust the goodness. It's about staying present when shame rises. And it's about recognizing that our ability to hold others: clients, children, lovers, is always mirrored by how gently, how powerfully, we're holding ourselves. If you're a practitioner, coach, parent, or partner… this is the episode that will open you to a new depth.Inside This Episode:Why pleasure is just as transformational as painThe real reason shame is the gatekeeper emotionHow your inner parent shows up in your space-holdingWhat most people misunderstand about Eros and embodimentWhy deep presence matters more than any techniqueHow to be with a loved one or client's breakdown without rescuing or retreatingThere's something sacred that happens when we stop trying to fix and start choosing to feel. When we stop holding back our pleasure or running from our shame. This is what it means to live and lead from the body. To guide not from perfection, but from presence. If this episode touched something in you, let it take root. And when you're ready to walk deeper, come find us: at the retreats, the trainings, the moments that change everything.Top Quotes: “Pleasure can burn you into truth just as deeply as pain.” “Shame is the guardian of every other emotion. Rather than feeling the weight of it all, it's easier to spend our days on autopilot, ignoring the noise inside. But what if the peace and relief we most long for comes from tuning in with what's happening inside, instead of tuning it out? This is what author and therapist A.C. That chance encouragement led to a lifetime of scholarship, deep friendships with Indian artists and tribal communities, and a career bridging East and West.We talk about his early encounters — from leading a beloved horse to its burial pit as a boy, to pedaling a rickshaw across the Indian border on his 20th birthday — and how those experiences forged a life of empathy, resilience, and wonder. Along the way, Huyler shares how India's remarkable generosity reshaped his own sense of self, and why its arts and crafts remain vital expressions of humanity today.Transformed by India has already earned acclaim in India, the UK, and the U.S., with a foreword by the Dalai Lama and an audiobook version narrated by Huyler himself. In a culture that glorifies busyness and distraction, slowing down is countercultural—but it might just be essential for your soul. In this episode, reflect on Psalm 46:10: “Be still and know that I am God,” and let it echo through the lens of Philippians 4:4–9. St. Paul calls us to “rejoice in the Lord always,” to “let [our] reasonableness be known to everyone,” and to “not be anxious about anything.” How? By turning everything—our stress, our schedules, our restlessness—into prayer. “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just… think about these things.” • Why hurry is a spiritual threat • How the peace of God “which surpasses all understanding” can guard your heart and mind • Simple, daily practices for reclaiming silence, prayer, and presence This isn't about escaping the world—it's about waking up to the presence of God in the middle of it.

In a culture obsessed with comfort and stability, the idea of necessary breakdown feels almost revolutionary. Yet this ancient wisdom appears across traditions—from Leonard Cohen's "There's a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in" to Rumi's understanding that "the wound is the place where the light enters you." This week's conversation explores why our modern fear of breakdown might be preventing our greatest growth. Unlike previous generations who embraced adventure and uncertainty, we've traded our willingness to put "chips on the table" for the illusion of safety. But what if this very attachment to preserving our current forms—whether mental, emotional, or physical—is actually imprisoning the spirit within us? The discussion reveals how breakdown isn't destruction for its own sake, but rather the natural process that allows new life to emerge. Just as a seed must crack open to become a flower, and a caterpillar must dissolve into "goo" to become a butterfly, we too must be willing to let our outdated identities dissolve when they no longer serve our deeper purpose. Perhaps most importantly, this episode addresses the fear that letting go means losing our core principles or truth. The profound insight emerges: when we release what is false about ourselves, what remains is always the truth—solid, uncompromised, and eternal. The question becomes not whether we can afford to break down, but whether we can afford not to. Here's what we're doing:On 31 July 2025, Joanne Murray, aka J. K. Rowling and Robert Galbraith, will be celebrating her 60th birthday. This celebration is considered a ‘second birth' in Japan or Kanreki because it is the completion of the oriental astrological cycle. To mark JKR's Kanreki, Dr John Granger and Nick Jeffery, both Nipponophiles, are reading through Rowling's twenty-one published works and reviewing them in light of the author's writing process, her ‘Lake and Shed' metaphor. The ‘Lake' is the biographical source of her inspiration; the ‘Shed' is the alocal place of her intentional artistry, in which garage she transforms the biographical stuff provided by her subconscious mind into the archetypal stories that have made her the most important author of her age. Today's Lake and Shed framed conversation is once again about the hilarious Christmas story for children of all ages, Christmas Pig. Nick discusses Rowling's many interview statements about the Things which were lost and how many of them match up with things she has lost; he takes a deep dive into the Blue Bunny episode outside the Gates of the City of the Missed and Rowling's embedding herself and her daughter Mackenzie in the story. John talks about the Blue Bunny and his being “found” or “saved” as an allegory of the human condition written in the Rowling shorthand-symbols for (and obsessions with) love, salvation, and what is real.New to the Lake and Shed Kanreki Birthday series? You can hear Nick and John discuss this process and their birthday project at the first entry in this series of posts: Happy Birthday, JKR! A Lake and Shed Celebration of her Life and Work.Tomorrow? Our second look at Christmas Pig with Nick explaining the history of the Murray Family and their beanie pig toys as well as a likely source for the defenestration of DP (in Esquire magazine, no less). John talks about the promise and the limits of reading literature through a biographical lens and then explains the anagogical meaning of the Power palace kangaroo court trial of CP and Jack. What if the most profound aspects of human experience—from religious ritual to artistic expression—have their roots in play? In this thought-provoking exploration of serious play, Captain Frodo challenges the false dichotomy between seriousness and importance, revealing how playful engagement offers access to deeper realities than solemn endeavors often can.Drawing on Plato's assertion that "life must be lived as play," we explore how imaginal play allows us to embody different identities and perspectives, transforming how we experience the world. When a child becomes Zorro or a martial artist imagines standing in flowing water, they're not merely pretending—they're accessing genuine transformative experiences that reveal aspects of reality otherwise hidden. The connections between play, ritual, and religion run deeper than most realize. Scholars like Johan Huizinga have shown how ritual creates a "magic circle" where different rules apply—much like the stage creates a space of possibility for performers. This understanding elevates performance art from "mere entertainment" to a profound human activity that creates shared realities and offers new ways of being. For performers, this perspective transforms how we approach our craft. Rather than apologizing for being "just entertainers," we can confidently assert that art forms the axis around which human culture revolves. By taking play seriously—recognizing its power to transform perspectives and access deeper truths—we honor the profound importance of what we do and strengthen our connection with audiences.Whether you're a performer seeking deeper meaning in your work or simply curious about the hidden importance of play in human experience, this episode offers transformative insights that will change how you see both playfulness and purpose.Support the show...Now you can get t-shirts and hoodies with our wonderful logo.
