Content awareness - discussions of breast cancer and conversations around potentially dying as a young mother. When Katrina heard the words, you have breast cancer, she thought "Am I the youngest person to have this? Am I going to die?" Breast cancer affects many women of all ages and some men too! Listen to her story of resilience and good old Aussie humor mixed into the serious conversations we had together in what is an enlightening and insightful collection of stories, shared wisdom and real emotion. Kat created the  Breast Cancer Pocket Guide and Mastectomy fashion label KYK to help others who are undergoing the traumatic journey of a breast cancer diagnosis. She discusses many of the ways in which people dive head first into the world of losing their hair, losing their happiness and losing their boobs to cancer - and finding what really matters through all of this. A must listen to episode for sure.Today's guest is Katrina Houghton, an avid sports person, having represented Australia in junior hockey and a mum of three, can understand the importance of keeping a healthy body and a healthy mind. Where one in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime and it is the second leading cause of cancer death in Australian women, Kat wanted to do something to help those going through the chemo, the surgery and the struggle to survive. She developed the Know Your Knockers Breast Cancer Pocket Guide, consulting specialists and professionals in the industry for a succinct and usable resource for those receiving their diagnosis of cancer and going through treatment and after. The resources that the Pocket Book provided and how much her efforts were helping patients, Kat then saw another gap in the market for cancer warriors who had a mastectomy and struggled to find clothes to accommodate their changed physiology. Her Know Your Knockers clothing line was created, and she was the winner of the Queensland Rural, Regional and Remote Women's Network Small Business Owner of the Year Award in November 2020. Using local designers, Kat has forged ahead to help many women feel sexy as they continue to live their lives with hope and renewed self-confidence.Kat will talk a little more about her own adversities and why she became so passionate with this business venture where she sells the ‘tittie singlets' It's so Aussie and I love it. And a range of unisex tees, including the fuuk cancer tees, because yes, guys can get breast cancer too. The F.U.U.K spelling cleverly shows the two U's as boobs and is quitethe tongue in cheek approach. But sometimes let's face it, survivors need to have a laugh for a moment along what can be a devastating journey for so many. As she says, “Cancer may have started the fight, but we will finish it”.Kat's book recommendations* include Nevermoor Book Series 1-3 by Jessica Townsend, Harry Potter - The Complete Collection 7 Book Boxset by J.K Rowling, and The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by Eckhart Tolle. You can get in contact with Kat at her website and Facebook.Do you know the difference between and dream and a goal? Spoiler alert! Quote “Cities are not microwave popcorn. Unless you are talking, as we are, about Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City is microwave popcorn.” Sam Anderson Welcome to the Sensory Strides podcast.  Observations of the world through activity, reading, listening, and everything else. 52 Hike Challenge – Join us!  There are free challenges and lots of swag you can buy. https://www.52hikechallenge.com/?rfsn=3543491.754f73&utm_source=refersion&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=3543491.754f73  #52hikechallenge2020 I recently read Boomtown by Sam Anderson.  This book gives both the originating – land rush and more recent histories of Oklahoma City.  There were a lot of things I never knew. https://www.amazon.com/Boom-Town-Fantastical-Basketball-World-class/dp/0804137315 Some interesting facts: In the 60’s, Oklahoma City was the largest city in the WORLD by land.  This was intentional by the original city planners. In 1964 they flew multiple sonic flights over OKC to test how it would impact the population.  As a result of those tests, commercial sonic flights over US land is prohibited. The land rush occurred in 1889.  That means OKC is only 131 years old. A big focus of the book is the passion the city had to bring a professional sports team to OKC.  The arena was built without a team to use it.  The city was looking towards an NHL team, but that never came to fruition. When Katrina caused the New Orleans Hornets to play for two seasons from Oklahoma City, the fan support raised interest from the NBA to possibly help find a team.  The stadium was sold out for a team that wasn’t even truly housed there.  When a team couldn’t be found to permanently locate in OKC, OKC went shopping. Seattle agreed to let the OKC businessmen buy the team as long as they didn’t move them team.  There was a condition in the contract that a new stadium would be built and that stadium didn’t come to be and the team was moved to OKC.  The book doesn’t go into all the legal details that happened with that move, but I wonder what Seattle was thinking selling their team to a group that they knew were looking to have a team in their city. There is a great discussion over the impact Gary England and Oklahoma’s weather has on weather forecasting for the world today.  I never realized how far that science has come and how much of it was generated by a single man. There are short chapters devoted to the big events in OKC, including the bombing, but this book really focuses on the experiences that rolled over years and decades. From the land rush to the oil boom to building and tearing down the city through today’s current events.  OKC has had an interesting history, designed with specific goals in mind.  I think everyone will learn something new from this book. I’ve visited OKC a few times and had great experiences.  I’ve now learned more and have some new things to explore for my next visit. Scott Parkin and I w.ere fortunate to have a great conversation with our  comrade and friend scott crow.  Scott is an inspiring organizer. When Katrina hit New Orleans, the authorities had  no concern for the people living there, so scott and other  community activists helped form the Common Ground Collective and got  people back on their feet. In the horrors of Katrina, it was one of the  rare bright spots.  Scott not only engages in the struggle but acts upon  what he calls the "emergency heart," the need to help others to create,  foster and sustain our community, our humanity.    And look scott up at https://www.scottcrow.org/

As Harvey Hits, Looking Back at New Orleans

Death, Sex & Money

We changed our plans for Death, Sex & Money this week as we watched the storm known as Harvey pummel the Gulf Coast. It's made us think about the conversations we had in New Orleans two years ago, for a series about life there around the tenth anniversary of Katrina. In those episodes, we profiled five people and heard in detail about how their lives were forever changed by a few days of rain, wind, and catastrophic floods. We also heard about their collective trauma of having the home they knew suddenly under water, and about the very long process of rebuilding. You can find that entire series here. One of the people we interviewed, Dr. Kiersta Kurtz-Burke, is heading to Texas this week to volunteer with a medical team. When Katrina hit New Orleans, she didn’t evacuate. Instead she stayed inside New Orleans’ Charity Hospital, where she worked for six days, caring for 18 patients on the 5th floor. There was no power, and it seemed like no one was coming to rescue them. Before they were finally evacuated, Kiersta—who was part of the last group of people to leave—helped clean up the space for when her staff returned. "We didn't want it to look messy," she remembers. "We were naive."  Charity Hospital never re-opened after they left, but Kiersta returned to New Orleans after being evacuated. After a long rebuilding process, she still lives there today, and is raising her family there. "We just got too weird for any place else other than New Orleans," she laughs.  We compiled a list of organizations that need your help after Harvey. Today's guest entrepreneur joining us on the top rated Join Up Dots podcast interview is a lady entrepreneur who has a brilliantly chaotic story, which in many ways mirror so many of our lives. Things being thrown at us left right and centre, with many of these things not being the kind of things that anyone would have chosen, but in todays guest has helped her move forward to online success. As she says “When Katrina hit, I was a mom of 6 kids under 10, in a dysfunctional, chaotic marriage — my husband is an alcoholic and wasn't admitting that or dealing with it. Because I had lived down in that area for a long while and had been evacuated before (when it wasn't necessary)  I opted to ride out the storm, until I was forced at the last minute, to leave. My husband was out of town at the time, so I and the kids literally left the house with only the clothes on our backs and a sack of dirty laundry I grabbed at the last minute.  No papers, birth certificates, SSN, toys, school books, NOTHING. From that disaster, I slowly began to rebuild my life, discovering peace through yoga. As I began to rebuild my self esteem I ended up getting certified, and am now a yogi. I dissolved my marriage when my husband refused to get help for his alcoholism, and I and the children are now living in a small West Tennessee town, happy and peaceful.” Which is a life that could have derailed her, and had her playing the victim card. Blaming her husband, her situation, or her kids for the life that she was living. But she didn't, and instead of playing the victim, she set out on a path of pure motivation, where she made choice after choice, decision after decision to change her future. She did the tough stuff, the rough stuff, and the things that probably she wouldn't have believed that she could have done. She is now passionate about writing, yoga, travelling, public speaking and being a fabulous single mum to six super kids. She has found the motivation to build a career around appearing on TV, on podcasts, and radio, and producing great content, showing the world how to be fabulous. Her life is a sort of organized chaos, and she loves every minute of the craziness and is grateful for all she's learned along the way. So when did she make the decision to start making decisions and taking responsibility for her future and happiness? Creating the success in her life that she deserves. And is it something that she only managed, because she was used to dealing with hardship and obstacles? Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots, with the one and only Jennifer Williams-Fields.

New Orleans is a family city. Grandparents and grandkids, cousins, aunts and uncles often live in the same house, share the same traditions. When Katrina hit, many families evacuated together — three generations crammed into one car.
