I always love a good transformation story and today I will be sharing Vanessa’s.   When Vanessa first came to me she was struggling with her self-confidence. Her long term goal was to feel good about her appearance and have more self confidence. She also wanted to make healthy eating a habit and make working out a daily habit.   Well, not only did she accomplish ALL of those, but we made it work for her life. It was all about HOW we could incorporate these things into her life as simple new habits.    Here’s a little of what she had to say...   “The positive changes that I have seen and still see are that I am enough. I can do it (whatever it is I put my mind to) and that things will be ok. I am now able to see the real person in the mirror. I didn't lose all the weight I thought I needed to lose but honestly, it was the guilt and the fear and the self-doubt that was weighing me down more so than that actual number on the scale. I learned that I am not a quick fix and this is an ongoing process, and I learn something new about myself every day.”    To hear the rest of Vanessa’s Story be sure to listen to the full podcast.    ****************************************** Unedited Video of our interview: https://youtu.be/akedc-emIXQ   If Vanessa’s story resonated with you and you would like to explore what it would be like working with me…  Feel free to fill out the application below and we can set up a FREE breakthrough session and see if we’re a good fit.  APPLICATION   **************************************   If you are stuck, frustrated, sick of yo-yo dieting and want to reclaim your health and would like a little group support and some awesome tips on nutrition and exercise for lasting weight loss and lifestyle balance...come join us in our free Facebook Group…( INSERT LINK: https://www.facebook.com/groups/574339769435340)  This group is specifically for women who want and need a different approach to weight loss and health...an approach from the inside, out!

This week we had the opportunity to connect with Vanessa Bolin, who is an indigenous artist, community organizer, and activist who has been helping with flood rescue and rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Florence in Lumberton, NC, which is in Robeson County. In this interview we talk about what still needs to be done in this area, how to help out, some important parallels between post hurricane relief and anti pipeline organizing, and the importance of foregrounding marginalized voices in mutual aid efforts. . … . .. Our guest mentioned the Interfaith Alliance for Climate Justice (IACJ), which has a fundraiser right now that is benefiting the indigenous communities of Robeson County. Here is the donation link via Facebook, or you can go to their website to donate that way. Mutual Aid Disaster Relief is also coordinating a bunch of efforts, you can learn more about this group at mutualaiddisasterrelief.org or look them up on any social media platform. If you have 4-14 days spare and want to get down to Robeson County to help out, especially if you have proficiency in Spanish and skills in logistical coordination, you can send them an email to get networked in at WeKeepUsSafeVC@protonmail.com. There is also a GoFundMe for mutual aid efforts in Asheville, benefitting affected areas in Robeson County. Links to some things our guest mentioned: To learn more about the Indigenous Wisdom Permaculture Model and convergence, just follow the link for information and future convergence dates. To see the Water Protector Arts Facebook page, you can just go to Facebook and search the name of the page. You can follow this link to reach directly out to the Lumbee Tribe if you are intending to do direct support work. To connect with EcoRobeson, the group which is doing anti pipeline work in Robeson County that is mainly affecting already disenfranchised people, you can follow this link. Somethings we'd like to mention: When Vanessa talks about the struggles of the Dine people (who are sometimes known as Navajo) where she mentions uranium mining, this is a huge issue that spans many generations. You can visit Black Mesa Rezistance, which is an organized effort in Black Mountain and Big Mesa (also known as Arizona) on the part of the Dine and Hopi people to defend themselves and their existences. You can learn more about this effort at https://blackmesa.rezist.org/ and follow the links for further material to learn about the history and present day projects and struggles. And finally, for a look into some of the truly amazing legacy of the Lumbee Tribe in so called NC, we at The Final Straw recommend the book To Die Game by William McKee Evans. This book details a resistance movement at a time when Lumbee youth were being targeted for conscription into the Confederate army, and how they along with a diverse coalition of other resistors, eluded capture in the swamps of eastern NC for over 5 years. You can also read about this in the book Dixie Be Damned, along with many other lesser reported moments of resistance in the American Southeast. Announcements for Prisoner Support Jalil Muntaqim Jalil Muntaqim, former member of the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army is facing the parole board in November as his August visit was postponed due to clerical issues. He's going to be getting a lot of pushback from the Policeman's Benevolent Association, Fraternal Order of Police, Corrections Guards associations and the rest of the gallery of reactionary so-called unions for cops. Those groups are on alert, as we've seen with the tug of war around the release of Herman Bell, any time an aging political prisoner, especially one accused of involvement in the killing of a cop, comes up for parole. The parole boards are often made up of former judges, D.A.'s, Prosecutors and law enforcement, forming an added blue wall for prisoners facing parole boards. So, Jalil needs us to write letters of support for his release. Although some of the links are dead from the earlier parole push, you can check this IGD link (see our shownotes at thefinalstrawradio.noblogs.org for the link) for a list of achievements Jalil has since his incarceration. Also, Jalil's birthday is October 18th, so feel free to send him a separate birthday greeting! Casey Brezik Casey is an anarchist political prisoner who also has a parole hearing coming up, his one and only for his 12 year stint for the stabbing of the president of a university in Missouri. Casey recently got married to a woman being held in another Missouri prison. He's studying calculus so he can go to school to be an aerospace engineer once he's released. He goes before the parole board November 2018. He's unsure of exactly when he gets out, but knows he isn't eligible until November 2020. He's currently saving his money (and asking for help) to afford a cheap vehicle when he gets out in order to transport himself to work and school. His intentions are to parole out to the St. Louis area and attending a community college until he gets his basic credits and can transfer to a university. His eyes are set on the Missouri University of Science and Technology. Casey suffers from depression and has a history of schizophrenia. he describes himself as socially awkward and says he often feels misunderstood. He has a kind heart and he looks forward to getting out relatively soon and getting to see all of those who have shown him support over the years. He thanks you all. Casey was recently transferred to the Farmington Correctional Center in Farmington, Missouri. In November, he will go before the parole board for the first and ONLY TIME and he needs your help! Thoughtful and professional letters to the parole board by people who care about Casey and are willing to offer support to him during his transition back to life outside of prison can make it more likely that Casey will be released. *Even though the letter should be addressed to the parole board, all letters should be sent directly to Casey and he will deliver them to the parole board: Casey Brezik #1154765 Farmington Correctional Center 1012 West Columbia Street Farmington, MO 63640 More on Casey at https://supportcasey.org/ . … . .. The Vaughn17 From a statement by the Revolutionary Abolitionist Movement (RAM) and Vaughn17 Support in Philly: On Feb. 1, 2017, after a series of peaceful protests yielded no results, incarcerated comrades took over a building at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Delaware to demand slight improvements in their treatment. After a 20-hour stand-off, the prison's response was to literally bulldoze their barricades and figuratively bulldoze their demands, retaliating with constant beatings, destruction of prisoner property, and denial of food and medical care. Furthermore, the state has accused 17 of the incarcerated with egregious offenses even though these charges have no basis in reality. The state's response shows once again that any prisoners standing up for themselves, to regain dignity and achieve decent treatment, is a threat. And the state will collectively punish everyone and anyone to hide its barbarism. The only role of prison guards, wardens and the Department of Corrections (DOC) is the perpetuation of slavery and subjugation. There is a call for court support for the 17, who will be attending trail in small groups, at New Castle County Courthouse, 500 N. King St., Wilmington, DE 19801. The first trial starts on Monday, October 8th and the last is slated for February 11th, 2019. People in the area interested in helping volunteer for court support can learn more by reading this IGD article. Vanessa Van Edwards: How to Succeed With People (Even/Especially If You’re Awkward) (Episode 157)

Productive Flourishing

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 31, 2017 58:30

Today’s guest, best-selling author Vanessa Van Edwards, joins Charlie to talk about human interaction and succeeding with people. You might think that someone who writes about people is a raging extrovert, but that’s not always the case. Vanessa refers to herself as a “recovering awkward person.” In today’s episode, she and Charlie talk about how much they actually prepare and set themselves up to be comfortable in social settings, rather than leaving it to chance and charm. Key Takeaways: [3:05] - Vanessa shares a little bit of her background, moving from being a socially awkward person to someone who is writing books about winning with people. She talks about two different types of awkwardness: an inhibitive awkwardness that causes you to shut down around others, or an awkwardness that causes you to overcompensate when you’re around other people. She believes both are born out of fear, and it’s important to know which way your social fears will manifest themselves. [5:27] - Charlie defines himself as an ambivert, depending on the context. In a comfortable environment, he may appear as an extrovert, whereas in less familiar environments, he tends to be an introvert. Vanessa shares her personal experience with this at the World Domination Summit and what she did over the course of several years to make herself more comfortable in the context of this conference. [10:30] - If you’re an ambivert (or an introvert), it can be helpful to have some go-to questions that you can ask when you approach people in a social setting. Vanessa talks about preparation for events and conversations, and making plans that provide structure for the course of an evening or help to guide an interaction. Charlie recommends asking questions that don’t require too much personal vulnerability, but still allow the conversation to flow. [15:00] - When Vanessa was doing networking experiments for her book, she found that some questions really attracted extroverts, while the same questions could push an introvert into fear. The specific question in this case was “What’s your story?,” but regardless of the question, you have to be sensitive to how people will exhibit their social fears. [18:50] - If there is a question you don’t like being asked, you can prepare an answer that you’re comfortable with so if someone asks you, you can keep the conversation moving and gravitate into more comfortable territory. [20:50] - The swan effect is where something appears easy, comfortable, and graceful on the surface, when underneath there is a lot of work and preparation required to maintain that appearance. [25:07] - It takes time to get to the place you want to be, whether it’s in your business or a relationship, and that’s okay. Both Vanessa and Charlie can speak from experience that it takes a lot of hard work and not-so-glamorous preparation to get on the path to where you want to go. [29:12] - Before Captivate, Vanessa had written three books that didn’t do so well. Her first book was self-published and self-promoted, and she used her baby-sitting money to publish it. This one actually did relatively well, but gave Vanessa a little bit of a false sense of confidence. The second book was also self-published, but didn’t do as well. With her third book, she went with a traditional publisher, but there was no public response. [33:45] - It took five years for Vanessa to come back from this rejection of her book, but the fourth book was a turning point for her. During this time she wanted to blame other people, but she realized that she wrote the book based on what she thought the publishers wanted, not for her or her current readers. When she asked herself what she could write just for her and her readers, that’s where she found a pivot point. [39:07] - In Charlie’s writing experience, the book proposal was often a difficult obstacle to tackle. One of the worst ways to try to write a book is trying to write it to how someone else wants, rather than in a way that’s magical to you. Vanessa talks about the model for a platform that most people feel they have to follow. There’s a window in which you feel confident enough to write about a topic and be successful, but the idea is not yet stale to you. That’s the ideal window you want to be in. [44:18] - There are three options for publishing. You can self-publish, or if you go with a traditional publisher you can either get a small advance where the company has little stake in the game, or a large advance where there’s something in it for the publisher. In the case of a large advance, they may be more willing to help with marketing and support. You want someone to have their name on the line for you at the publishing house. [48:10] - Create the types of things that you want to consume. Just because you can create something, it doesn’t mean you should. [49:55] - How did Vanessa become emotionally prepared enough to go with a traditional publisher for her fourth book? She had advocates on her side who gave her confidence in herself and encouraged her to write what she wanted. She also felt that not having a book was preventing her from being able to help people. [54:45] - Vanessa found her business and personal sweet spot by adding structure to different areas of her life. It takes time to develop these things, but the payout is worth it. [56:35] - Vanessa’s challenge for listeners is to pick one event or meeting that you’ve been dreading, and come up with a purpose for it. Think about how you can set yourself up for success to achieve that purpose, and see if it changes the apprehension surrounding the interaction. How the Power of Others Influences You

Tom Nikkola Audio Articles

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 8, 2016 13:28

Who fills you with ambition, excitement, and belief in yourself? Who sucks the excitement, desire, and self-confidence from your soul? Other people influence your thoughts, actions, and feelings every day. The closer your relationship is, the greater the influence. Our lives are shaped by the people we surround ourselves with, more than the circumstances we find ourselves in. Your choices about your health, career, hobbies, finances, and values are yours. Yet, those choices are shaped by your mindset, and your mindset is shaped by your significant other, family, friends, co-workers, and others with whom you invest your time. When you understand the power others have on you, and the power you have on others, you become more intentional about who you spend your time with, and how that time is spent. The Power of Others to Influence Your Mood Vanessa and I are focused, introverted individuals. According to Myers-Briggs, I’m an ISTJ. She’s an ISFJ. When Vanessa concentrates on something, her countenance is similar to when she is angry, hurt, or frustrated. My countenance while concentrating is the same as when I'm disappointed, disgusted, or irritated. If countenance is a new word for you, it means "the look on one's face." We’ve been married for 13 years and it’s still challenging for me to decipher which emotion she is feeling when she's hard at work. Often, I assume. And you know what they say...when you assume it makes an (butt) out of you and me. More accurately, just me. Can you relate to this? Do you have a spouse, family member, friend, or maybe your boss, who has “that look” that immediately changes your emotional state? This isn’t to say it’s their fault. You can certainly make them aware of how their countenance affects you. Yet, it's still up to you to control your response. I’ve learned to ask, even if I’m interrupting her flow. “Honey, are you just concentrating on something or are you bothered about something?” Most of the time she’s just concentrating. Then I let go of the concern and move on with my day. I'm also aware that the way Vanessa perceives me affects her. I've become more conscious of my countenance.  Just this morning, as I was concentrating on this article, Vanessa walked in our office. I was in the zone and wanted to keep writing, but I knew how that might be perceived. I paused, smiled and even invited her to sit on my lap. Don't get any ideas. It didn't go any further than that, but my taking the moment to invite her to have a seat, and her willingness to do so created a nice, private moment. My mood was great after that. A lot better than it would have been if I would have kept writing. It's easy to spend too much time with people who bring us down, and not enough time with those who lift our spirits. Our neighbors Keith and Kristie are great examples. Whether we just pass them in the hall as we're walking our dogs, or we go out to dinner, in a moment, or an evening together, we always feel happier after seeing them. Over the next few days, pay attention tohow you feel around certain people. See if you can spend more time with the people who lift you up and less with the time that bring you down. Remember that you have an influence on others, just as they have an influence on you. The Power of Others to Influence Your Belief in Yourself My mom hasn’t always agreed with my choices, but once I made a decision to do something, she's always supported me. Like when I decided to sell knives instead of getting a "real job" in college. Or when I decided not to take the MCAT after graduation, and instead move to Sioux Falls to open a branch office with Cutco Cutlery. Or when I resigned from Cutco to become a personal trainer. Or when I resigned from Life Time to join Vanessa with our business. Every time, her response was, "Are you sure?" Translation: I trust your decision, but it makes me nervous. "Yes, mom,

She’s a business woman, a mother and a role model to many young ladies. You may know her as “Rich Girlz” or as “Nessa” but her real name is Vanessa Posso. Vanessa was born and raised in Colombia were she came from a financially challenged family. Vanessa came to America at the tender age of fourteen and felt as though she were in her own fairy tale story; settling in her new found land, she instantly fell in love with New York. As Vanessa became older, she began to have an interest in jewelry—she felt it added additional flavor to a fashionable style. When Vanessa became pregnant, she was faced with the extraordinary challenge of becoming a mother. This then motivated her to begin her jewelry line.
