The 7 Deadly Sins of Exercises

Episode 75: This week's podcast is all about sin. Vanessa's guest is Rick Christ, a senior consultant at Crisis Prevention and Response, Inc., and a FEMA Master Exercise Practitioner. Rick lays out his seven deadly sins of crisis management exercises. The sins are mistakes organizations commonly make in preparing for and conducting exercises to demonstrate their readiness to respond to a disaster. Vanessa draws Rick out on the details and asks what organizations can do to avoid committing the seven sins. Rick and Vanessa hit on these key points: • One problem with traditional crisis response is it is usually limited to response, leaving out such critical steps as prevention and mitigation. As Rick puts it: “After I break all your windows and fill your basement with water, I leave.” • Organizations don't put enough effort into our Exercise Evaluation Guides. Rick says, “The difference between having fun with your toys and an exercise is measuring against your goal and recording that on your EEG.” • Too many organizations exercise specific scenarios rather than capabilities. As Vanessa says, “The crisis is insignificant; I don't care how it happened. The issue is, it happened.” Rick also explains what he means by saying most organizations exercise too big and dream too small, and he and Vanessa bond over their shared connections to Virginia, his current home, and the state she grew up in. We are honored to introduce you to our dear friend, Vanessa Lynn. She has an important story to tell. It is a story about facing unimaginable pain, loving unconditionally, the power of words -- and life after death. It is her journey and it is her daughter L. Grey’s journey. In Vanessa and L’s just published book, “Ravens and Rainbows,” they tell their story of triumphing spiritually when everything is lost. “I am in every raven and rainbow you see. We’ll see each other again before you know it. It’s time for me to sleep now. Goodnight, Mommy. It’s time to say goodnight.” —L. On July 22, 2018, fifteen-year-old L. Grey swallowed a bottle of prescription pain killers, and closed her eyes for the last time. Some would say she took her life, but it could be more aptly said that she took her life back.As Vanessa describes, L had an unexplainable knowing from the time she was born. She looked at the world differently, as if she had one foot in this world, and one foot in another. She was able to express seeing energy and deceased loved ones from the time she was two years old. And as soon as she was able to write — her words were haunting, deep and wise beyond her years. L knew exactly who she was from an early age. At age 10, she declared she was gay and proudly began to speak up within the LGBTQ+ community. Somehow she also knew she wouldn’t be on this Earth long — and that she would endure unspeakable pain. Unfortunately, she was indeed correct. At the age of twelve, L was diagnosed with the most painful condition known to humans, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Vanessa takes you on the journey — and L pops in from beyond throughout the conversation. Vanessa shares their experiences during their harrowing 3-year ordeal with CRPS and other illnesses that ravaged L’s body. Throughout it all, L captured it all with her prolific writing and unwavering bravery.Although L ultimately left the Earth, she is very present in this life. We believe you will walk away after watching with a new appreciation for life -- and life after death. Vanessa and L teach us all how to live each day to its fullest. "You better love this, because it's not for the faint of heart". Moving to Hollywood, chasing big-screen dreams, and sacrificing everything for the rich and famous lifestyle is far from uncommon. But what if you're just a kid? For 6 yr old Brooklyn-born Vanessa Chester, it was only about one thing: working for that next Happy Meal toy. Every audition was a chance to shine, and before she knew it, she was working with some of the greats, from Big Bird, and Mr. Snuffleupagus, to Alfonso Cuarón and Steven Spielberg. Vanessa was self-admittedly, "that weird actor kid" and owned it 100%. But what truly makes a star? Some say talent and hard work, other says it's who you know. For Vanessa, it was always about being professional, regardless of your age. However, as a child navigating the entertainment business, it's crucial to get the proper support and guidance to survive. Luckily, it came from the most important and influential person in her life; her mother. As Vanessa faced rejections, bullying, and the "raptors" of the industry, her mother kept her grounded and protected. As life progressed into adulthood, fighting the label of a "has been" and reintroducing herself to acting, her mother encouraged her to live her truth. And with that, Vanessa has embraced her incredible journey, but never forgetting that she's trying to arrive somewhere. There's nothing like being underestimated, and knowing you're capable. So for all those who believed in Becky, Janie Gibbs, and Kelly Curtis Malcolm, this one's for you. #MamaWeMadeIt Connect!IG: @vanessalchesterTwitter: @VanessaChester@anoushmoin@getrauschy@mamawemadeitmamawemadeit.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We all want the same thing -which is for life to not suck! What we’re saying is that the path to life sucking less is to get really honest and feel all the feels. Episode 14: Self Care for the Indie Business Owner with Vanessa Laven

Creative Yarn Entrepreneur Show

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 16, 2014 37:26

I interview Vanessa Laven, who has been using knitting, sewing, and her love of mixed martial arts to kick cancer’s butt and grow her own indie artisan business, Survival Organs. Vanessa shares her simple rules for self care for the indie business owner. Although this interview was recorded in September, I held it until the late fall because I know this is a season where many business owners in the yarn industry (and crafters in general) stop taking care of themselves and focus on production for the holiday rush. Vanessa’s Tips for Self Care for the Indie Business Owner Listen to your body Outsource when appropriate Don’t skip meals Set a stop time — and stick to it Keep mobile devices in your workspace (and don’t check email before bed) About Vanessa Laven Vanessa started her blog, Mixed Martial Arts and Crafts, in March 2011 as a public service to talk about life after chemotherapy. As a survivor of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, she knew there were limited resources and supports available for young cancer survivors and she wanted to share her story to help others. She launched her Survival Organs shop on Etsy in August, 2013. Initially, she featured crocheted survival organs but quickly moved into sewing. Sewing the organs with cotton fabric allows her to create inventory faster to keep prices lower for her customers, and friends can also use a fabric marker to write inspiring notes to their friends before gifting the organs. Vanessa currently features breasts, gall bladders, kidneys, livers and pancreas, lungs, lymph nodes, ovaries and uterus, testicles, thyroids, and white blood cells in her shop. This interview was originally recorded in September, 2014, when Vanessa was in New York City for Stupid Cancer‘s OMG East Cancer Summit for Young Adults.  1. Listen to your body Vanessa remind indie business owners to always listen to your body. Specifically, rest when you feel tired rather than pushing yourself forward. Similarly, she says if it hurts, don’t do it. This simple advice can help you avoid repetitive stress injuries and illness, and also allow you to be more focused when you are working. Vanessa also reminds us to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water during the day. 2. Outsource when appropriate Although outsourcing is sometimes a dirty word for DIY types, Vanessa reminds us that outsourcing tasks to other indies – such as your graphic design work, photography, web development, and more – allows you to “put your money where your mouth is” by supporting other indie businesses while clearing some unwanted tasks off your plate. She suggests that you stick to the unique work you do to makes money for your business, rather than spending a lot of time on tasks that you may not excel in or which are too time consuming for you. 3. Don’t skip meals Vanessa talks a lot about lunch, but for the part-time indie business owner who may be working primarily at night or in the mornings, breakfast and dinner are also important. Setting some time aside for a meal allows you to recharge while also providing nutrition to power your brain through important tasks. 4. Set a stop time — and stick to it As Vanessa is a full-time indie business owner, she advises others to stop working by 5:30 or 6 p.m. A part-time indie business owner should similarly set a hard stop time in the evenings or mornings to allow time for resting, recharging, and spending time with family and friends. 5. Keep mobile devices in your workspace (and don’t check email before bed) Vanessa leaves her laptop in her office and doesn’t check email before bed. She reminds us that there’s always time in the morning to package items for postal pick up or respond to emails. No one (or, at least, no one reasonable) expects an indie business owner to be open and operational 24 hours a day.  Vanessa’s Bonus Tips Vanessa also shared some bonus tips for specific indie scenarios. Self care during craft shows Always get someone to help you. Vanessa advises asking a friend, partner/spouse, or relative to help out. This person may help with set up or break down, or provide much needed bathroom breaks in the middle of the day. Bring a cooler with snacks. Vanessa always brings two large bottles of water and some healthy snacks like nuts. Since she knows her friend will cover her for some bathroom breaks, she can stay hydrated without worry. This is especially important as talking can dehydrate you, as can being in a space that is very warm or cold (as most craft fairs tend to be). Take the next day off. Vanessa considers the day after a craft show as her own “introvert recovery day.” She recommends sleeping in, doing things you enjoy (rather than running errands or working), and staying flexible about scheduling. Self care when facing unwanted business tasks Cluster unpleasant tasks. Vanessa suggests clustering unpleasant tasks and thinking about the business rationale as you complete them to help you move through these tasks more easily. Outsource. Consider outsourcing duties that you really can’t stand to other indies. Make it fun. One of Vanessa’s least favorite tasks is photography. She blasts her favorite music in the background while taking pictures. Self care for new business owners Create consistency. Vanessa’s top tip for new business owners is to create structure for your business through scheduling. A regular schedule makes things more predictable and reduces uncertainty while helping with time management. Similarly, if your business is operating out of the home, a consistent schedule allows you to set boundaries with others in your household to clarify when you are working and when you are available. Self care during business expansion Reassess your business. Vanessa recommends examining your business as it expands to explore what tasks may be outsourced or phased out if they are no longer profitable. She also suggests getting back into balance by following the original tips she outlined for self care. If you enjoyed this episode The Creative Yarn Entrepreneur Show is no longer broadcasting. Bee The Wellness founders Vanessa and Adam Lambert are here to talk about all things related to health and wellness today, with a focus on relationships. This power couple truly knows their stuff, as Bee The Wellness is a health and wellness consulting company that specializes primarily in retreats held around the world. People experience full-on lifestyle transformations during these programs and Vanessa and Adam’s warm energy and enthusiastic personalities bring a really special sense of camaraderie to the whole experience. Vanessa and Adam also host a “Bee The Wellness” podcast that allows them to further connect with their audience and also bring in some fun guests. You’re probably thinking now that that’s a lot of time for two people to spend together - collaborating daily for their company and their retreats, weekly for their podcast, and also just being in a committed partnership! Vanessa shares that, “One of the biggest things for us as we’ve grown in our relationship is actually to have permission to argue...to actually make space for that.” This was quite a discovery for Vanessa, as she grew up hearing her mother, who was divorced, press upon the importance of never arguing with your partner. However, Vanessa realized that if you’re always living in fear of not “getting along” with your spouse, that will do you both a great disservice. And as their relationship grew with time, she realized that she and Adam were able to communicate in a much healthier manner when they were getting stuff off their chests and expressing what was on their mind to each other. “You can’t just shove it away in a corner. It’s actually been awesome for us to learn how to fight!” Vanessa comments, laughing. Adam quickly clarifies that their fights are not “screaming and yelling sessions” but rather a way for them to simply have a rational conversation about information that just has to be let out into the open. And as they both explain, not taking things personally makes a huge difference, which is why they’re both so committed to letting the small stuff go. They understand that the other person might say something without thinking, or be running on little sleep, and something insensitive or unnecessary slips out...it happens, we’re all human. And not being nit-picky or overly sensitive to those very real, human moments, to simple mistakes, makes a huge difference in the dynamic of their relationship. Vanessa notes that often, a lot of people will “latch onto” one bad moment in their relationship and “become a victim of that moment,” but that kind of behavior will never help you move forward. Clearly, getting over yourself goes a long way, especially when you find yourself in a petty argument with your spouse and can’t even remember how you got there! Vanessa reminds us that no one will be perfect “every second of the day” and to just remember this when you find yourself in a challenging moment. “80/20 it!” Adam suggests. Yes, you can totally apply the 80/20 healthy eating rule to your behavior within your relationship - strive for your best most of the time, but don’t beat yourself up when a small mistake slips in. Recognize what happened, acknowledge the mistake and the part you played, learn from it, and move on. Next! More than anything, taking personal responsibility for the way you are in all areas of life is one of the major lessons people learn to integrate from Adam and Vanessa. They compare its importance to managing money to illustrate how much care people will pour into one area of their lives if they think it’s important. Well, if you don’t put the same kind of thought and responsibility into managing your emotions, then how can you be surprised when you realize you have no control over them? One big question Adam pushes people to ask themself is: “Where do I suffer more if I’m not the person I need to be?” Almost always, the answer to this question is work, as that’s where your income and reputation come from, not to mention how often it involves your ego. One of the best takeaways from this show is how deeply beneficial it is to work on your relationship because working on your relationships forces you to work deeply on yourself. This is because the simple act of being in a committed partnership will make anyone expand internally in a way that they wouldn’t have been prompted to, had that other person not been there for you to react to. As Vanessa notes, working through issues in a relationship is often the catalyst for you to say, “Wait, why do I react like that?” which allows you to really go deep and examine why you react to things in a specific way. Discovering where certain deep-rooted behavior comes from - “sifting through your files together” as Vanessa has coined it - is the “magic” that keeps them together - through doing the deep work. Adam and Vanessa have been together a long time (since they were “kids,” Adam notes) and fortunately, they’ve been able to grow together , and not grow away from each other. A huge part of that growth is thanks to their Bee The Wellness coaching program. One of the reasons why their retreats are so life changing is because Vanessa and Adam are constantly taking it to the next level and asking themselves the right (and sometimes hard) questions in order to deepen their emotional intelligence. One thing they point out is how everyone is always so focused on being healthy, but for what? “You’re not going to get a blue ribbon for being healthy….The real prize is in how you use it,” Vanessa says. She makes a great point - if simply being healthy, fit, and capable is the prize, then what do you really want to use it for?  These retreats are often centered around physically challenging exercises, like hiking Machu Picchu and white water rafting in Costa Rica, but as Vanessa and Adam explain, the physical fitness aspect is merely a conduit that leads people to develop a deeper and clearer understanding of what they’d like to devote their time to, and how to best utilize their strengths, both physical and mental. And more than anything, the camaraderie that develops between the other retreat members is truly invaluable: “It makes these once in a lifetime experiences even more special because you’re sharing them with people who are your friends, but who feel like family.” That’s all for today, but stay tuned for an upcoming show where we’ll discuss plant medicine and the role ayahuasca plays in their life-changing retreats. *TIMESTAMPS:* Adam and Vanessa balance the yin and the yang on their podcasts.
