In August 2005, one of the most powerful storms ever recorded in the Gulf of Mexico barrelled toward the United States. When Hurricane Katrina finally struck land, it devastated hundreds of miles of shoreline, but the disaster that captured the world's attention unfolded in one place above all: the city of New Orleans.   Within hours of the storm passing, the flood defence levees meant to protect the city broke, and it began to fill with water. What followed the natural disaster was a crisis that raised profound questions about preparedness, inequality, and the ability and willingness of a modern nation to protect one of its own great cities.   But why was New Orleans so vulnerable in the first place? What was the response in the wake of the hurricane and flooding? And what did the disaster reveal about the systems of engineering, government and society that were supposed to protect it? This is a Short History Of Hurricane Katrina. A Noiser podcast production. Hosted by John Hopkins. With thanks to Jed Horne, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author of Breach of Faith: Hurricane Katrina and the Near Death of a Great American City. The conversation explores Miami's recent success with transfer portal quarterbacks, including Cam Ward, Carson Beck, and now Mensah, while debating whether the Hurricanes can eventually develop a quarterback from freshman year through the program. Miami is once again one of the biggest stories in college football, and this episode dives into whether "The U" is officially back. The crew debates Mario Cristobal's impact on the program and whether Miami's rise should be credited primarily to Cristobal's recruiting and culture-building or to the arrival of elite talent like Cam Ward. From rebuilding the roster to restoring Miami's national relevance, the discussion centers on how the Hurricanes have returned to the championship conversation. The conversation then shifts to new starting quarterback Darian Mensah and the controversial path that brought him from Duke to Miami. The hosts discuss Mensah's talent, his fit in Miami's offense, and why many believe he may be an upgrade at the position. They also examine the arrival of star receiver Cooper Bar-Kate and how Miami's offense could be even more explosive in 2026. On the defensive side, the crew breaks down the challenge of replacing NFL-caliber talent such as Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor while highlighting the next wave of Miami defenders ready to step into larger roles. With Jason Taylor continuing to develop elite defensive linemen and several highly regarded recruits waiting in the wings, the Hurricanes appear positioned to maintain one of the ACC's most talented defenses. Finally, the hosts analyze Miami's 2026 schedule game-by-game, debate the toughest tests on the slate, and discuss whether the Hurricanes can navigate key matchups against Clemson, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, and Florida State. The discussion concludes with predictions for Miami's season record and whether this roster has what it takes to compete for an ACC Championship, College Football Playoff berth, and potentially a national title. Is Miami truly back? The guys make their case and explain why the Hurricanes may have their best opportunity in years to reclaim college football's biggest stage. What followed was not only a journey of physical recovery, but a profound reckoning with identity, resilience, vulnerability, and the stories we tell ourselves about strength.Together, Olivia and Archita explore the hidden cost of always being the strong one, the difficulty of receiving help, and the surprising ways healing begins when we stop trying to carry everything alone. This conversation is for every woman who has ever felt responsible for holding it all together. For every high-achiever who has mistaken survival for strength. For every person who has struggled to ask for help, even when they desperately needed it.At its heart, this episode is a reminder that resilience is not found in how much we can endure alone—but in our willingness to be seen, supported, and transformed by the communities around us.Because sometimes life dismantles what no longer serves us so that something more authentic can emerge in its place. What happens when life strips away everything you thought made you who you are?In this deeply personal and emotional return to Embracing Only, Olivia shares her firsthand account of surviving Hurricane Melissa, one of the most powerful storms ever to impact the Caribbean. After losing her home, belongings, and sense of normalcy overnight, she was forced to confront a truth many high-achieving women know all too well: strength can sometimes become a survival mechanism that keeps us from receiving the help we need.Together, Olivia and Archita explore resilience, trauma, therapy, community, burnout, and the hidden cost of always being "the strong one." This is a conversation about rebuilding—not just a home, but a life.If you've ever struggled to ask for help, found yourself carrying too much, or felt like you had to navigate life's challenges alone, this episode is for you.In This Episode Surviving Hurricane Melissa and losing everything  The emotional aftermath of disaster and trauma  Why high-achieving women struggle to ask for help  The healing power of community and vulnerability  Therapy, burnout, and the cost of forced strength  Learning to say "no" without guilt  The journey from survival to healing Key Moments00:00 – Welcome back to Embracing Only: Why we took a break01:24 – Hurricane Melissa changes everything05:20 – Losing an entire home and rebuilding from nothing07:29 – Why asking for help felt impossible10:29 – Hurricane Melissa: What really happened12:05 – Stop asking if people need help—just help13:05 – The real reason many women don't ask for support16:20 – The storm story begins22:43 – Trapped inside a collapsing house23:43 – "I thought this was it."24:31 – The moment prayer became all they had left26:44 – Surviving the storm, facing the aftermath27:46 – "No one is coming to save you"—and why that belief changed29:48 – The hidden cost of being strong all the time31:49 – Learning to say no and ask for help32:49 – The Unraveling Overachiever34:22 – A simple exercise: Count how many times you say no37:12 – Why your brain fights change38:25 – The future of Embracing OnlyBook Mentioned:When the Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress by Dr. Gabor MatéAbout Embracing OnlyA podcast for ambitious women navigating leadership, identity, healing, personal growth, and life beyond traditional definitions of success.Connect with us: www.embracingonly.comMemorable Quote"It took a Category 5 hurricane stripping away everything I had armored myself with to realize that I was never walking through life alone." — OliviaBooks MentionedWhen the Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress — Dr. Gabor MatéAbout Embracing OnlyEmbracing Only is a podcast for women navigating ambition, identity, healing, leadership, and life beyond the traditional definitions of success. This week on Sports Guyz Only, the boys kick things off with a birthday controversy, concussion counts, aging athlete problems, and a debate over whether anyone under 30 can truly appreciate how quickly the body starts betraying you. Cal celebrates another trip around the sun, Gavin accidentally misses the birthday by a day, and the crew somehow ends up discussing CTE before they've even touched sports.   From there, it's a full playoff recap as the guys break down the Carolina Hurricanes' dominant Stanley Cup run. They discuss Jordan Staal's unbelievable playoff performance at age 37, whether he's one of the most underrated players of the last two decades, Rod Brind'Amour's growing Carolina legacy, and how the Hurricanes put together one of the most dominant postseason runs of the modern NHL era. Plus, Taylor Hall's redemption story, Brandon Bussey's improbable Finals debut, and why Vegas may have finally run into the one team built to beat them.   The conversation shifts to the NBA Finals, where the Knicks capture their first championship in over 50 years. The crew debates whether it was the most competitive gentleman's sweep ever, questions the Spurs' late-game coaching decisions, and dives into Jalen Brunson's place in Knicks history. There's also plenty of discussion about Victor Wembanyama's increasingly villainous reputation, Mike Brown's coaching redemption arc, and whether Minnesota may eventually need a new voice leading Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves.   Plus: World Cup excitement and Messi's final international run NHL tax advantages and why Florida keeps attracting stars The greatest "what if" playoff scenarios Steve Kerr's all-time unfortunate naming decision Shohei Ohtani gambling conspiracy theories Vikings frustrations and Brian O'Neill debates A chaotic sports trivia showdown that ends with Nathaniel taking the crown   As always, it's championship reactions, wild sports hypotheticals, old-man complaints, and enough hockey talk to make Gavin happy for at least one week. A little while back, our friends over at On the Media released a gripping and immersive reporting series about FEMA, the agency that is supposed to be there for all of us in the wake of disaster. In American Emergency (https://zpr.io/MtrUmJU3yEMW), OTM investigates how the agency tasked with saving America became distrusted, despised… and defunded. Today we talk to On the Media co-host Micah Loewinger about how this project came out, what reporting went into making it happen, and play a couple of fun and truly surprising bits of the story that the OTM team uncovered. And it's a story that highlights the ideal and promise of good government, right alongside the frustration with bureaucracy and mismanagement, and of course the undercurrent of profound mistrust in governmental power.  As natural disasters are getting more extreme and less predictable, this series makes sense of that tangle, and provides a prescient peek into FEMA's future. Special thanks to On the Media (https://zpr.io/MtrUmJU3yEMW).  To hear Micah in person, talking more about the complex history of FEMA, join him on June 24th at WNYC's The Greene Space (https://wnyc.org/events/otm-fema).
