Paring Down: Realistic minimalism to live more intentionally
The benefits of living with less can be discovered through as many avenues as there are people - and today, we hear how ultralight backpacking was the catalyst for Glen Van Peski to embrace a lighter load in his every day life. Glen's wilderness stories are inspiring (I can't help but laugh at his hiking story with Matthew McConaughey), but his lessons about generosity as a result of minimalism are even more profound. We often think "But I need MORE in order to give to others," but Glen's hard-won wisdom and experience proves otherwise. When we live with only the essentials, we make space for showing up for others in ways that we'd be blind to otherwise. This is an episode that I think will stick with you for a very long time. Living with Less - A Conversation with Lauren Petrullo. Lauren shares her unique life experiences, from growing up with limited personal belongings to her innovative approach to managing her wardrobe. She takes us on a journey through her life, moving away from home with just a duffel bag and how that minimalistic approach influenced her choices as she grew up. Lauren emphasizes the power of statement pieces and the importance of items that adapt to various situations. She describes her approach, mixing practicality with style and embracing a unique signature look. The conversation delves into how she maintains a versatile wardrobe, often wearing the same outfit multiple days in a row while subtly changing accessories to switch between work and leisure. The conversation explores how these personal strategies can help create clear boundaries and an intentional approach to life. Angela Brown encourages viewers to look closer at their wardrobes and consider whether their clothing represents the person they aspire to be or the person they're trying to distance themselves from. It's a thought-provoking and inspirational discussion that might change how you view your relationship with your wardrobe. This week, we're joined by Shira Gill, home organizer extraordinaire and NT Times best-selling author, to delve into the profound benefits of cultivating a clutter-free life and environment. We'll also explore the exciting concept that by embracing minimalism and living with less, we open ourselves up to the potential for more! Shira says that clutter inundates our minds with excessive stimuli. Considering the multitude of demands and information we already contend with daily, being surrounded by clutter means our brains are working overtime to process it all. In contrast, an uncluttered environment offers our minds a respite, allowing us to function with greater clarity.Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Shira Gill is a globally recognized home-organizing expert and lifestyle creator with a less-is-more philosophy. Over the past decade, she has helped thousands worldwide reduce clutter and create more space for what matters. Shira's work centers around the intimate relationship between people's homes and lives and how they inform and inspire each other. She is the author of Minimalista and Organized Living. She has been featured in Vogue, Dwell, Better Homes & Gardens, House Beautiful, Architectural Digest, Domino, Forbes, Goop, Harper's Bazaar, HGTV, Today, InStyle, Parents, Real Simple, and The New York Times. We're bombarded with messages insisting that more possessions equate to greater happiness. It's often simpler to follow this narrative than to pause and genuinely reflect on whether the items we accumulate truly serve a purpose in our lives. I loved chatting with Shira and promptly started purging my home office and closet once we finished our conversation. And, no surprise, I immediately felt better! Shira and I discuss:Her journey from an aspiring home organizer to a sought-after author of three books. The underlying reasons for clutter in our homes and lives.Discovering what you want in life and how your environment can help manifest your desires.Practical techniques to initiate decluttering in your living spaces today.Strategies for parting with possessions without causing tension & turmoil with your people. Her new book, Organized Living. Happy New Year!! Today on Sense of Soul podcast we have, Subhash Jain he is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil & Environmental Enginnering at The University of Iowa. He was born in India into a family that practiced Jainism and he continued to do so after coming to the US in 1967. After retiring in 2003, he concentrated on studying Indian Philosophy, particularly the Jain karma doctrine, and received another Ph.D. degree in Jainolgy from the University of Madras. He has published two books and several articles in journals and magazines on the karma doctrine. He's joining us today to talk about ‘The Path to Inner Peace, Mastering Karma,' which presents the fundamental principles of the Jain karma doctrine through a fictional account of the relationship between a guru and his American student. As the story unfolds, the guru instructs the student on how ‘karmic debt' is incurred as the result of personal action and how this ‘debt' can be reduced through behavioral choices. With an emphasis on nonviolent action, Jainism elucidates the path whereby karmic attachment is decreased, leading to inner peace. The Path to Inner Peace serves as an in-depth analysis of which actions lead to karmic attachment, how to avoid karmic attachment and what the consequences of karmic attachment are. Path to Inner Peace: Mastering Karma by Subhash Jain is available from www.mantra-books.com and wherever books are sold. About The Little Way of LIving with Less by Laraine Bennett From the publisher, Sophia Institute Press website: https://www.sophiainstitute.com/products/item/the-little-way-of-living-with-less Do your possessions “spark joy”? In our materialistic society, we are often plagued with the slow torture of accumulated stuff, which creates disharmony, prevents us from living in the present moment, and keeps us from setting our eyes upon Heaven. The Little Way of Living with Less is a spiritual journey guided by St. Thérèse of Lisieux toward a “less is more” manner of living. It shares one couple's effort to downsize, declutter, and detach — and the challenge of growing in virtues that is associated with this process. Indeed, this book serves as a practical antidote to the consumerism and commodification of daily home life today. Through the words and example of the Little Flower, you will find peace, joy, and security as you learn how to overcome disorder — whether physical, mental, or spiritual. St. Thérèse will help form you in single-mindedness to complete the ordinary with extraordinary, selfless love, and you'll soon find yourself becoming intentional about making God the center of your life and your home. Best of all, you will discover that “everything is grace” (St. Thérèse) and will begin thanking God for your many blessings and experiencing His miraculous favors with greater mindfulness. Inspired by the Little Way, you will more confidently seek the things above and “choose all” in holiness. Let “the greatest saint of modern times” show you how to: Let go of clutter, unhealthy habits, vices, and sin Simplify your life and manage fear and anxiety Create order, beauty, and vibrancy in your home Detach from the world, cultivate poverty of spirit, and attain Heaven Find the happiness and gratitude that come from within Become humble and small, trusting in the mercy of God By living an integrated life that is free of materialistic pleasures, you will develop the freedom of a child of God to abandon yourself to the Father's will. Enter into the Heart of Jesus and make room in your heart to experience the wonders of His love! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-aidan-byrne0/support
