We couldn't be more thrilled to have Erika Sheets, the passionate, local co-founder of Moms for Liberty, joining us. Get ready to hear a powerful narrative on local activism, education and parenting from a mom who's in the trenches fighting for children's education rights. Erika's journey to co-founding the Johnson County chapter of Moms for Liberty and her relentless advocacy for quality education are truly inspiring.   Our conversation takes a deep dive into discussing the world of parenting, more so the crucial family investments we undertake, particularly the selection of the right school district for our children. We break down the myth that families are against teachers, highlighting that parents must make decisions based on each child's unique needs. We don't shy away from exploring the potential impact of the decreasing public school enrollment on our children's education.   The passion doesn't stop there. We tackle the importance of being proactive in our children's education, questioning narratives, and standing up against bullying and intimidation tactics. Wrapping up our conversation, we explore our voting power as citizens, the importance of researching candidates, and supporting organizations that align with our values, like Moms for Liberty. Join us, and let's empower ourselves to take a stand for our children's education!   Erika has become a friend of ours in the last few years. She is to us an expert as she has taken the time, going above and beyond, researching and building a foundation to help support our community. Erika, her husband and two teens have been Johnson County residents since 2010. She has been a Blue Valley parent for 13 years in six different buildings and has consistently served the district on various committees, PTO and more over that time.    Professionally, Erika has spent 30 years in revenue generation & leadership development and holds an MBA from Case Western Reserve University as well as a BA from the James Madison residential college at Michigan State University.  Sunlighten Sauna Sponsor: https://get.sunlighten.com/unlikely  Save up to $600! Wondering minds want to know…since 2020, why have 1.2 million students in the United States left public education? Homeschooling has more than doubled to over 5 million children! If you are curious, take a closer look at home and start with your public school board. We all know the Public School Board of Education has been in the media.  Most people only know what they see or hear on the news or social media, however, there is so much more to your school board.  In our conversation with Erika, we covered a variety of topics in which we hope will give you some encouragement to learn more about your own public school board and how you can play a part for the future of your/our children. We discuss some myths vs facts, how do you judge a successful school board, how you can get involved, and more challenging topics like the new comprehensive sexual education programs rolling into our schools.   Erika Sheets has become a friend of ours in the last few years. She is to us an expert as she has taken the time, going above and beyond, researching and building a foundation to help support our community.    You know the Dems are coming after Joe Biden when 60 minutes does a sit down with the prez and includes the line, "America's oldest president seemed tired."  If he's still coherent enough, Biden must feel the weight of the world on his shoulders right now.  He is not up for this at all.    House Republicans say they will have a floor vote Tuesday to elect Jim Jordan the new speaker.  I'll believe it when I see it.    Kansas Republicans say they're going to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot to keep Democrats from raising your property tax valuations.  Pretty cool.    Four conservative school board candidates in Blue Valley are campaigning together at www.bluevalleyexcellence.com and they are not holding back in what they want their schools to be.    Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert lost another game Monday night by throwing a pick at the end.  Charger fans in the stands looked stunned, probably because they are now realizing he's just a younger Phillip Rivers.   The Chiefs have a chance to add a deep threat at wide receiver if they want to go Hollywood and former KU star Josh Jackson, twice arrested before, is in big, big trouble this time.

"Kindness is showing an investment to each other.” - Darcy Swan  A recent study revealed that two in three millennials don't feel like they belong in their local community. Looking a little further up the stream, another study showed that one in five students don't feel like they belong at their school. There's a growing void developing among the younger generations, who are looking for who they are in this great big world – and the YMCA wants to close that gap for them. Join Dr. Michelle Robin as she invites Darcy Swan from the Y to talk about why they've implemented specific Youth Development Services in our community to help kids find their belonging and develop a purpose in life. Darcy will also share some impactful encounters she had during her school years that led her into a teaching profession and later to the Y. The power of kindness will also become a cornerstone in this conversation, which proves how far small acts go in another person's life – such as calling someone by name or remembering what they are interested in. At the end of the show, Darcy will provide some wisdom to families looking to improve their overall well-being.  About Today's Guest:   Darcy Swan is Senior Vice President of Youth Development at the YMCA of Greater Kansas City. This week we're chatting with Tim Kennedy, the longtime and extremely successful baseball coach at Bishop Miege and Blue Valley High School here in the Kansas City area. Now, why are we talking with a high school baseball coach on a podcast that mainly features business leaders and talks about leadership and mentoring?Well, as you may know, since 2017 we've had a program in partnership with Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Kansas City and the Kansas City Royals called Coaches with Character. Each year we recognize six coaches who are making Kansas City a better place. This year we are featuring the coaches on this podcast because who knows better about leadership, building teams, team chemistry and so on than successful high school coaches?A graduate of Blue Valley High School in 1990, Tim Kennedy put together a successful 2023 campaign in his first year as head coach at his alma mater after having previously served as a math teacher and an assistant coach at the school since 2013.Tim's coaching and teaching background started in 1997, shortly after graduating from Kansas State University. After five years as an assistant coach at Bishop Miege High School, Kennedy became head coach of the Stags and served in that role from 2003-2011 before his tenure at Blue Valley High School began in 2013.As his nominator, Peggy Rose, who was a Blue KC Coach with Character honoree a few years ago, wrote, “Coach Kennedy is what first class looks like as a teacher and a coach. He works with his students in Algebra 2 and AP Calculus in the same way he works with his high school baseball players – in a patient, respectful and encouraging manner that fosters a sense of confidence that has manifested itself in several league and state titles, as well as success in the mathematics classroom. He always does the right thing and wants what is best for the team and to make kids better through sports. Tim always has time to talk and listen to fellow coaches, teachers, students and athletes.”In this chat, we talk about that coaching career, leadership highs and lows, building a team, and much more.LINKS:Here's the article about Tim Kennedy as the June Blue KC Coaches with Character honoree. For more information about the C-10 Mentoring & Leadership program for high school students, visit our website. To make a financial gift to give students life-changing one-on-one mentoring, visit our secure donation page. For all episodes of the C-10 podcast and ways you can listen, click here.If you'd like to make a comment, have a suggestion for a future guest, or your company would like to help underwrite this podcast, please visit our contact page.
