Before anything else, we felt we had to address the Charlie Kirk situation, with what happened to him, why it most likely happened, and what kind of a man Charlie was. Book Announcement Professor Markel announced that Nick Orr's new novella, "Mockingbird," in the Pipe Hitters Novel series, is available for pre-order on Amazon Kindle and will be released on September 15th. The conversation ended with the introduction of the show and its co-hosts. Firearms Training Home Study Program The professor explained the home study program, which provides structured learning materials including written, video, and testing content to prepare students for in-person firearms training. He emphasized that the program allows students to learn safety rules and techniques before arriving at the range, maximizing the time spent on practical training during the live session. Jarrad highlighted that the home study course covers specific techniques and tactics used in the training, giving students a head start on understanding expectations and allowing them to absorb instruction more quickly during the live session. Gun Safety and Emergency Training The meeting focused on a discussion about responsible gun ownership and emergency medical training. Professor Paul Markel shared his experience hosting a radio show with Tom Gresham and discussed his book "Beyond the Boo Boo," which covers traumatic medical training for citizens. John, a retired physician, called into the show to discuss the importance of stop-the-bleed training and shared his experience as a certified instructor. They emphasized the need for quick action in emergency situations and the simplicity of stop-the-bleed techniques, suggesting that anyone can learn to help save lives in the event of a shooting or other traumatic incident. Battery vs. Tritium Optics Discussion The discussion focused on the benefits and drawbacks of battery-powered versus nuclear-powered (tritium) optics, with Professor Markel explaining that while tritium sights offer perpetual power without battery changes, they are more expensive initially and have a limited lifespan of 8-9 years before needing professional refurbishment. Sonny Puzikas and the Role of Violence in Man's Life Jarrad sits down with the great Sonny Puzikas for a long discussion on life, faith, and what place that violence has in the world, as well as in a man's life. He discussed how Americans often avoid trauma training until an emergency occurs, noting that corporate first aid training is typically limited to CPR and basic life support due to insurance discounts. The class highlighted the importance of proper bleeding control techniques, contrasting with common first aid knowledge that focuses on CPR, which is ineffective for severe bleeding situations. Counterfeit Tourniquet Awareness Discussion The group discussed counterfeit rapid tourniquets, identifying them by their flimsy metal parts, lack of authenticity markings, and poor quality compared to genuine products. They advised against purchasing tourniquets from suspiciously low-cost sources and recommended buying from authorized retailers like ShopSOTG.com. Self-Defense and Cultural Institutions The meeting discussed a defensive gun use case in Texas where a homeowner used his firearm to deter an intruder with a machete, highlighting the importance of gun ownership for self-defense. The group also touched on recidivism rates and the manipulation of crime statistics in Washington, D.C. Finally, they introduced the "Warrior of the Week" segment, featuring a speech by Yuval Levin on the importance of institutions in addressing cultural conflicts. Rebuilding Trust in Institutions The meeting focused on a speech by Yuval Levin at BYU, discussing the decline in trust towards institutions in American society. Levin argued that institutions are failing to form trustworthy individuals, instead becoming platforms for performative behavior. He emphasized the need for a mindset change, where individuals take their institutional roles seriously and ask, "Given my role here, how should I behave?" Levin concluded that healing society's divisions requires small, constructive steps towards rebuilding trust in institutions.

This episode of Bone to Pick is pure chaos in the best way. From heated debates about which side of the Zoom screen to sit on, to Bobby's serene-yet-heavily-armed New Hampshire summer life, to Paul's unapologetic takedown of “boat people” and the adults obsessing over collectible “Boo Boo” dolls, you'll be laughing before you realize you've been nodding along. The guys spiral into hilarious rants about hot tubs from Walmart, redneck neighbors, overpriced flowers, Jeep dashboard trinkets, garbage-dodging roommates, and the maddening seals on maple syrup bottles. Fan “bones” bring even more absurdity, from baristas in flip-flops with nightmare toes to customers arguing over $11 bouquets. On the day this episode is released, Batavia kicks off Boo Boo Days. For me, Boo Boo Days is a new concept, a sort of quaint and slightly bizarre throwback that just started a few years ago. But the reality is, Boo Boo Days originated decades ago and played a crucial role in the origin of the Windmill Festival. But what really interests me is the whole concept of this oddly named celebration. Where did this idea come from, and why organize an entire celebration around mistakes? To explore those questions, I brought back a previous guest, Kate Garrett, director of the Batavia Depot Museum to help us understand what made the downtown we all take for granted what it is, and how grass roots campaigns like Boo Boo Days have shaped Batavia's culture and landscape. S2 E43 Paul Culina | Icing Your Boo Boo Bob Cutler sits down with his longtime friend Paul Culina, UMaine's veteran athletic trainer, to talk about three decades of college hockey, the evolution of student-athletes, and what it means to stay rooted in a place like Orono. They discuss NIL, draft dynamics, facility upgrades, and the grit it takes for Maine hockey to compete nationally. They also toast Culina's brewed-in-Maine IPA, Next Goal Wins, and reflect on life, loyalty, and legendary locker room stories. Key Topics Longevity matters – Culina's THIRTY-YEAR career shows the value of consistency, loyalty, and growing with the athletes you serve. Adaptation is key – From NCAA sanctions to NIL policies, Maine's hockey culture has endured by evolving without losing its core identity. The power of local ties – Whether it's a home-brewed beer or mentoring a walk-on goalie, true community happens through shared experience and heart. Episode Index (4:57) Culina recalls arriving at UMaine in 1995 just as the hockey program was under investigation, surviving major NCAA sanctions, and carrying the “us vs. the world” spirit. (9:02) He explains how NIL and the hockey draft structure challenge Maine's recruiting, with players being drafted by birth year and often starting college at age TWENTY-ONE. (14:14) The UMaine hockey culture values older, blue-collar players who've taken longer roads—often giving them extra drive and a chip on their shoulder. (21:23) Culina describes how his men's league brewed its own beer, Next Goal Wins, with Black Bear Brewing—now available statewide. (25:37) Bob closes with a moving tribute, calling Culina the kind of person “you want your boys to grow up to be,” honoring his impact on generations of athletes.

Send us a textThe Nobody's Talking gang is back together again, and they're making up for lost time with an episode that careens wildly through everyday absurdities, hypothetical scenarios, and hilariously explicit confessions.Things kick off with a surprisingly passionate debate about pedestrian rights-of-way at intersections. What starts as a simple question about traffic laws evolves into a heated exchange revealing how differently we all navigate these everyday encounters. The crew pulls no punches sharing their strategies for dealing with slow-walking pedestrians, from patience to calculated risk-taking that might technically violate the law. When the conversation shifts to what they'd do if they won the lottery, their answers expose deeper truths about trust, relationships, and privacy. While some would tell family members first, others claim they'd keep their winnings secret—even as lottery tickets jump from $2 to $5, pricing some players out entirely. The hypothetical scenario creates a window into each host's worldview and priorities. The episode takes several hilarious detours, including an unexpectedly detailed breakdown of strip club dining recommendations, personal walkout song selections for boxing matches, and a semantic debate distinguishing between "titties" and "tits" that somehow manages to be both crude and linguistically nuanced. These raw, unfiltered conversations reveal the authentic chemistry that makes Nobody's Talking feel like eavesdropping on friends who have abandoned all pretense.Ready for an unfiltered ride through the minds of people who aren't afraid to say what most of us only think? Tariffs, tariffs, tariffs. It's the word on everybody's lips this week and, as you'd expect, every food media outlet in the country published some sort of breakdown of what this means for restaurants and the food industry at large. Father Sal and I sift through the noise to distill what this means for LA restaurateurs and diners alike. Also on this episode, we issue a correction from last episode, we recap a beefy meal at the newly opened Matu Kai in Brentwood, and we dive deep on Meghan McCarron's piece for the New York Times' tracking how the decline of middle class restaurants - think Red Lobster, Chili's, Outback Steakhouse and the like - speaks to a worrying trend in American dining. In Chef's Kiss Big Miss, there's the closure of an iconic Greek restaurant, the launch of a questionable celebrity (Glen Powell) sauce brand, and the announcement of a brand new Vince Vaughn flick that hit a little too close to home for yours truly.
