In a world that seems to be increasingly divisive and volatile, I've been asking myself more and more: what can I do to make a positive impact? How can I increase unity? I know it may be far-fetched to think I can change the world as a whole, but what about the world around me, right here next to me each day? In today's episode, I'm talking with Steve Carlston, my dad and President of NBC Los Angeles, about the increase in divisiveness and defensiveness, and what we can do right now, in our homes, families, and communities to create more unity, more love, and more respect.Sponsor:Go to shop.analuisa.com/beyondthecake and use code BEYONDTHECAKE to get 10% off

Not too long ago I had a listener reach out and ask if I'd do an episode about navigating divorce. Her parents had just announced theirs, and this listener found herself lost in this new space. I promised her I would. I promised because there were so many times early in my parents' divorce, and even now, 18 years later, when I wished I would have been able to hear someone else's story, when I wanted to feel less alone, when I needed help better understanding and better navigating what was going on. Rather than just share my personal experience and what I've learned over the last nearly two decades, I've invited my friend Dr. Matt Townsend to help guide this discussion and offer his expert advice for not just navigating divorce as the child or parent when it happens, but also for navigating our relationships before it even becomes a possibility. From lifestyle blogger to life coach, Jenica Parcell's journey has made a lot of course corrections over the years. Today on "Courtney, Beyond the Cake," Jenica is sharing her story with us and how she knows she landed right where she was always meant to be. After years of silently suffering the heartache and pain of infertility, Jenica started to share her story and was amazed at the supportive response from her community. In fact, that response was the inspiration for sharing more often and later building a community specifically for women experiencing infertility. As she changed her course, she found new opportunities and has shifted her focus completely to helping other women with similar struggles. Jenica is the founder of The Slice of Sun, an organization that raises money for couples experiencing infertility, she also has coaching programs for mindset and awareness, as well as a podcast, Fearless Fertility. Jenica is now mom to 5-year old twins, Goldie and Harris, and a dear friend of mine. Whether you've experienced infertility or not, there's so much in Jenica's episode today that can guide you through any struggle you may be facing. https://asliceofstyle.com/https://thesliceofsun.com/https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fearless-infertility/id1557339836Sponsors:Get 10% off your order by going to shop.analuisa.com/beyondthecake and using code BEYONDTHECAKEGo to Prose.com/beyondthecake to take your FREE in-depth hair consultation and get 15% off your first order
You may have heard: Facebook recently released an internal research study about the harmful effects of Instagram (one of its properties) on teenage girls. The report shares how 1 in 3 teenage girls who use Instagram are likely to develop an eating disorder and/or depression. What is Facebook doing about? Well, nothing, really. So what can WE do as parents to keep social media a safe and healthy place for our kids? Today, I've invited back Andrea Davis, founder of Better Screen Time to talk about the research findings and to share with us ways we can fight the harmful effects of social media, while also teaching our kids healthy usage habits.Sponsors:Go to BetterHelp.com/beyondcake to get 10% off your first monthGet $10 off your first poshmark purchase by entering the invite code beyondthecake when you sign up
Happy Wednesday, friends! It's just me today. We haven't done one of these one on ones in a while… so I hope you don't mind. I'll be back with a new guest next week. I recently had the opportunity to speak at a women's religious conference here in Utah. The topic: a brightness of hope. I didn't write my talk for that evening intending to share it with more than that group of women, but have since felt prompted to record that same talk to share with you today. I touch on my relationship with Christ, my history of depression and anxiety, my cake journey, and why hope has been such a big part of my life. And my hope for this episode is that you feel more capable and more willing to take on today with the hope that tomorrow will feel brighter.Thank you for sharing this space with me!Sponsor:Go to shop.analuisa.com/beyondthecake and use cod BEYONDTHECAKE to get 10% off
From lawyer to baker, today's guest has proven that when you put your mind to something, anything is possible. Vallery Lomas was in the middle of law school when the recession hit and her dream of a job offer before leaving school was no more. Without a job lined up, she ended up traveling to France before moving to New York City where she started a macaron company. She was baking constantly, and loving it, but it wasn't quite paying the bills. When she finally lined up a job in the legal field, and was still working weekends and late hours to run her macaron business, she knew something had to give. But surprisingly, it wasn't her law career… at least not yet. It wasn't till years later that the foodie bug hit Vallery again and she started blogging about her recipes and posting to Instagram. She quickly got noticed by casting agents and was chosen for the first season of The Great American Baking Show, a franchise of The Great British Bake Off. Five weeks of long hours and lots of baking…. something Vallery hoped would mean great things for her path in baking. Unfortunately, before Vallery could be announced the winner, the show was pulled off the air after the premiere. Vallery's heart was broken and she questioned what to do next. Today on Courtney, Beyond the Cake, Vallery shares with us what happened next, and how she decided she'd rather take a risk on something she loved than play it safe with something she didn't. Vallery's first cookbook, Life is What You Bake It, was just published, and you'll also see her over on Food Network's website and app, as the host of Vallery Bakes Your Questions. She's also appeared on CNN, the Today Show, Live with Kelly and Ryan, the History Channel and the Hallmark Channel. Originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Vallery attended college and law school in Los Angeles, practiced law in Washington D.C., and spent a gap year in Paris—where she perfected both her French and pastry skills—before settling in Harlem. She is also a frequent columnist and recipe contributor to the New York Times. Tiffany Rosenhan started writing shortly after her first daughter was born, but not with the goal to get published or share her work. She simply found solace at the end of a long day when her fingertips hit the letters on her keyboard and the stories and characters she created in her mind found their way to the screen in front of her. Her characters and stories gave her something to look forward to after her girls were tucked in bed and while her husband worked long hours at the hospital. Sitting down to write was Tiffany's time to escape, be creative, and fill her cup - something she says also helped her be a better mother to her three girls. During these years of writing “just for fun,” Tiffany started to create a character she felt more invested in than any other character she had written about. Sophia was someone special. Someone fierce. Someone strong. Someone who deserved her own book! After a few years of flushing out Sophia's character and storyline, Tiffany was picked up by Bloomsbury Publishing and in 2020, Girl From Nowhere was released. It was a thrilling time for Tiffany, but just at the peak of all the final details of her launch, her 41-year-old husband suffered a stroke, followed by brain surgery, and a year of seizures. Life was unexpectedly and immediately turned upside down. Today on Courtney, Beyond the Cake, Tiffany shares with us her journey of storytelling, how writing has strengthened her as a mother, why creating a strong female lead was so important to her, and how her trust in God has helped carry her in uncertain times. Tiffany is a mother to four young daughters, has a degree in Political Science from the University of Utah, and loves to travel with her children and husband. When Christopher Carlston lived in Paraguay over 20 years ago, he had no idea how the people he met and the experiences he had would change the course of his life. He was inspired by their generosity, their kindness, their respect. After graduating with a degree in Communications, Chris found a career in television advertising to lack personal fulfillment and wanted to do something that would change people's lives for the better. So, he left the newsroom for the courtroom. It was those years in Paraguay, along with a few of his early cases during law school, that really helped Chris hone in on his desire and passion to help others. He's now been an immigration attorney in Dallas, Texas for over 8 years, focusing on immigration related litigation, as well as employment based and family based visas. He was recently admitted in the US District Court of Northern Texas and the Fifth Circuit, and has law-changing courtroom wins, including MDF v. Jimmy Johnson and the Matter of Viera Garcia (don't worry - he'll explain more about those in today's episode). Chris also shares with us recent cases he's been working on in Afghanistan, why this work is so important to him, and the one thing he says we can do to help immigration reform. For years Aubrey Taylor fought her body as she struggled to feel what she knew was healthy and normal. From inflammation and gut dysfunction, to anxiety and depression, to headaches and stomaches, Aubrey went from doctor after doctor not getting any answers. As she struggled to find a solution, Aubrey took matters into her own hands and started becoming an expert on her own mind, body, and soul. She turned to more natural forms of healing and discovered mindset healing. As Aubrey learned more about how nutrition and stress affect the connection and efficiency of mind, body and soul, she also learned how having a growth mindset is really at the forefront of all healing. In fact, she says it's 80% of the healing process. In today's episode of Courtney: Beyond the Cake, Aubrey takes us through her journey of learning, growing, and healing, and how she's using her own experience to help others. A trained mindset healer and wellness coach, Aubrey shares with us tools for changing the negative narratives stuck in our subconscious - that script that tell us we're not worthy of healing - and how we can rewrite that narrative to conquer our subconscious and forge a path of resiliency and growth. Instagram @heal_your_3Sponsor:Get 10% off your first month by visiting BetterHelp.com/beyondcakePhrase to repeat when ripping lies: I create my future by releasing the past.Health affirmations I wrote and use personally:•Dear body, I love you.•I nourish my body with healing foods and lifestyle choices and it responds with health, strength, vitality, and healthy gene expression.•Every cell in my body vibrates with healing energy and is connected with all other cells.•With every exhale, I release stress and dis-ease. With each inhale, I send connection, love, communication and health to every cell.•All of my body's systems and organs function and communicate perfectly.•My body communicates with me and I pay attention and give my body what it needs.•I am worthy of healing and thriving, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.•I release and forgive whatever part of my past has caused imbalance or dis-ease. My body is divinely designed to heal itself, and I invite that divinity within me to take the reins. AFFIRMATIONS FOR RELEASING WEIGHT•As I nurture and heal my body it naturally releases weight because it feels safe. •I release excess weight as part of becoming the highest version of myself. •As I grow into the highest version of myself, I release excess weight as part of my new identity.•I give my body permission to release _____ lbs of past energy and identity that no longer serve me. Hacks for penetrating the subconscious filter with affirmations:1.Music without lyrics in the background while saying the affirmations aloud2.Movement 3.Time of day - upon waking and as you're falling asleep. and/or sunrise/sunset 4.Repetition. Repeating each affirmation 3 times before moving onto the next. 5.Essential oils6.Heart tapping while you say the affirmations with music. 7.Nature Books: Biology of Belief, The Body Keeps the Score, You are the Placebo, The Hidden Messages in Water, Untethered Soul, The 4 Agreements, Unbeatable Mind (you mentioned the first 5 chapters)Most influential educator in my life: Zach Bush, MD has been one of the most instrumental and influential people in my life. Loni Coombs is a former Los Angeles County criminal prosecutor. For 18 years she prosecuted over 50 trials, ranging from murders and gang cases to sex crimes and DUIs. During that time, she also worked in the Crimes Against Police Officers Special Unit, was the Deputy in Charge of cases involving celebrities like Nick Nolte, Nicole Riche, Kim Delaney, Sean Stewart and Meg Ryan's stalker, and ran the Hate Crimes Division, managing the most complex hate crime cases in the county and providing hate crime training to law enforcement agencies. In 2006, Loni transitioned into the broadcast world, working for local and national broadcast outlets as a legal commentator, as well as a field reporter, and host of both primetime and morning shows on networks such as CNN, Oxygen, E News, Dr. Oz, the Today Show, Access Hollywood, and HLN - to name a few. Loni is currently the host of several investigative true crime shows on Oxygen.Loni is one of the smartest, hardest working women I know - and she happens to also be my stepmom. I've had a front row seat to some of Loni's career and I've always been in awe of not just her talent, but also her work ethic, her ability to manage work life and personal life, and her devotion to helping others. Today on "Courtney: Beyond the Cake," we're not only talking about Loni's journey, we're also diving into the current Britney Spears hearings. I know that's a little bit of a different topic for the podcast, but as someone who grew up in the Britney Spears era, I have to say, I'm all-in on #FreeBritney. But more than just growing up with Britney as the celebrity of our generation, I think I'm feeling so invested in what's going on because I have a much greater and more personal understanding of what her mental health struggles were like. When photos of Britney shaving her head and later taking an umbrella to a paparazzi's car popped up all over the world overnight, we weren't talking about mental health like we thankfully are today. Nor did we, as outsiders looking in, seem to recognize or acknowledge the potential abusive relationships she's been in that have likely had a huge affect on her mental health. To me, Britney speaking out after 13 years of having no autonomy, having her narrative controlled by others (mostly men), and likely struggling with mental illness and trauma, is inspiring and something I hope, at the very least, sheds light onto mental illness and abusive and controlling relationships.Sponsors:Get 20% off your first order when you go to AthenaClub.com and use the promo code beyondcakeGo to Cuyana.com/BeyondTheCake and get 10% off your first order over $150 plus free shipping
Heather Jenson is a mom of three with a passion for being active. It started back in high school when her parents encouraged her to find a sport she could put all that teenage energy into. She chose swimming and spent the next 10 years competing in the water. It wasn't until years later, after Heather became a mom, that running became such a huge part of her life. At first it was a way to stay active with her kids, but after the birth of her third child, it became a form of meditation and a way to find mental clarity as she battled postpartum depression. As she sought professional help for her depression, Heather turned to her love of fitness like never before and signed up for a new level of athleticism, the Ironman 70.3.Heather had already become a veteran marathon racer, but this new goal helped give her the focus and drive she needed, along with the professional help she was seeking, to fight her way through the darkness. While Heather has run into her fair share of hurdles on training days and race days, nothing quite compares to the accident she was in this past October. As she was driving on the freeway, headed to film one of her coaching sessions with NordicTrack for iFit, she suddenly encountered a scene that looked like it came straight from a movie. With giant construction beams flying across the freeway, Heather's car was hit and thrown off the side of the road. Miraculously, no one died that day, but the event left Heather wondering if she'd ever race again.Today on "Courtney, Beyond the Cake," Heather opens up about her journey with postpartum depression, how running helped her through the darkness, and how she's fought her way to back to the finish line.Sponsor:Get 10% off your first month by visiting BetterHelp.com/beyondcake

All-In is an interview-style podcast that explores faith with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as well as others of faith about why faith matters in an age of uncertainty. With the consistent final question for every guest being, “what does it mean to you to be all-in the gospel of Jesus Christ,” guests express their faith and religious commitments in different ways. With over a 100 episodes, there's been over 100 different answers to that question - something Morgan and other creators of the podcast hoped for. “We wanted it to be something that would be inclusive rather than exclusive and make people feel like there are a lot of different ways to be ‘all in' the gospel of Jesus Christ,” Jones said.Since its launch two years ago, the podcast has had more than 5 million downloads and continues to grow each week. Today, Morgan is giving us a little glimpse into her new book and podcast. With the shocking news of his best friend's suicide, Philadelphia 76ers CEO Scott O'Neil found himself spiraling as he experienced the true meaning of grief. It was during this time that Scott started to focus on his own mortality and the fragility of life. As part of his healing, Scott started to write about his friend and the many lessons he'd learned in their nearly 3 decades of friendship. The writing was not only healing in the grieving process, but it also helped Scott resolve two sides of himself that were in conflict: his heart and his hard-driving professional life as a competitive Harvard Business School trained sports CEO. In his new book, Be Where Your Feet Are: Seven Principles to Keep You Present, Grounded and Thriving, Scott shares a lineup of lessons he's learned the hard way to offer readers relatable, actionable changes they can make in their lives to create a life of purpose and presence. “Failure is the best teacher. It's just not a fun teacher.”I'm so excited for you to get to know Scott in today's episode of “Courtney, Beyond the Cake” - and not just because he's lived a life on the basketball court and we all know my love of basketball! More importantly, Scott reminds us how important our role as parents and leaders is to developing the productive, positive habits of the younger generation. I think you'll also appreciate the framework, anecdotes, and exercises Scott offers to guide us toward self-discovery. We had the opportunity to talk via Zoom, which usually runs beautifully, but we did have a few moments here and there in today's episode where you'll hear a few glitches. You won't miss much of what Scott says, but I just wanted to give you a little heads up. Enjoy the episode. He was the face behind the mask - the mask of the most popular college mascot in 2017 thanks to a dance he performed as Cosmo the Cougar with his school's dance team that went viral getting over 7.5 million views. She spent months in the hospital - often alone, scared, and in pain, but she knew she was meant to have that child, even if it meant risking her own life. She grew up on the basketball court, following her dad’s career as a college men’s basketball coach. She knew the game like the back of her hand. Still does. Learning from her dad as they watched his players, went on recruiting trips and just spent time together at the dinner table, were some of Lee Anne Pope’s fondest memories with her dad, Lynn Archibald. It was years of moving from state to state, years of wins, and years of losses that taught Lee Anne and her family what it really means to be part of a team, on and off the court. What she didn’t know in her youth, however, was that her experiences as the coach’s daughter would be preparing her for a future as a coach’s wife. But it was certainly not planned or expected. Lee Anne actually graduated with a Broadcast Journalism degree from Brigham Young University and landed a job at ESPN in Bristol, Connecticut right out of college. The job of her dreams, or so she thought. It wasn’t long after she started at ESPN that a friend encouraged her to move down to Manhattan and take a job with her as David Letterman’s assistant - a job that would change her life forever and actually help get her back on the basketball court. Lee Anne Pope is the wife of BYU Men’s Basketball Head Coach, Mark Pope, she’s a mother of four girls, and she’s helping to build the best locker room in America! (I’m only a little biased - wink wink). Today, Lee Anne shares with us the lessons she learned from her parents during the ups and downs of her dad’s career, as well as how her childhood experience shaped her and prepared her for her career, for marriage and for motherhood.

Dan Davis is the founder, CEO, and creative mind behind Stiry, a video storytelling platform whose purpose is to help people discover their infinite potential through stories that move them. In fact, the tagline for Stiry is “stories that stir" - they’re meant to stir emotions that lead to positive action. Since starting Stiry in 2016, Dan has directed over 200 films around the world - from billion dollar CEO’s, to the number one rock band in the world, and to the everyday person that has an inspiring story to tell. But Dan didn’t always know storytelling and making connections with people was his purpose. Dan was an entrepreneur - has been since he was 12-years-old and thought he always would be. After starting a sports company in college that didn’t pan out, Dan went on to help run a multi-million dollar film production company and then made a drastic jump into healthcare, where he took on the title of CEO by the age of 30. Everything looked great on paper, but after a few months in this corporate role, Dan knew it wasn’t right. With the support of his wife and family, he resigned, moved his family back to Utah and with no money, no job and a family to support, he finally took the time to discover his own story… and Stiry was born. Dan’s philosophy is that “every person deserves to wake up every single day with purpose and when you dedicate time to uncover your story, you can reveal the greatness already within and have the power to do something extraordinary with your life.”Today Dan and I talk about the unexpected turns along his path, what it was like walking away from a booming career, why personal inspiration is such a big part of his life, and how Stiry is meant to connect us, inspire us and move us to find purpose in the every day.
