Send us a textWhat happens when a teacher trusts students to create theatrical magic? In this captivating conversation from Ayala High School's drama department, we discover how one unexpected career twist transformed English teacher Madeline Sherritt into a theater director who puts students firmly in the driver's seat.Technical Director Aiden Kitavis and Assistant Director Karly Welsh share their journeys from theater newcomers to program leaders, revealing how the department's unique approach fosters both artistic growth and personal development. Rather than micromanaging, Ms. Sherritt creates an environment where students design sets, manage tech, direct scenes, and solve problems as they arise—from figuring out how to transform a multipurpose room into a medieval rock concert venue to determining how to spend their limited, self-funded budget. The conversation centers around their upcoming production of "Six: The Musical," the Broadway hit that reimagines the wives of Henry VIII as a pop group. Securing rights to this coveted show—one of the first high schools to perform it—represents a meaningful milestone for the program. Through candid stories and lighthearted moments (including impromptu appearances by Ms. Sherritt's young children), we see how Ayala's theater program builds not just productions but a genuine community where students become "the calm in the storm" and develop practical skills they'll carry forward.Whether you're a theater enthusiast, educator, or simply appreciate stories of young people exceeding expectations when given genuine responsibility, this behind-the-scenes look at student-led theater will inspire you to reconsider what's possible when we trust the next generation with creative control. The end of April also marks the official end of the previous year's games calendar, as all of the Big 5 games industry awards shows (Golden Joysticks, The Game Awards, DICE, Game Developers' Choice, and the BAFTAs) have now been and gone. Which is useful because it means that here at Indieventure, we get to draw a line under 2024 at long last and turn our attentions firmly to the future of games released in 2025 – which, naturally, we'll be legally allowed to talk about until April 2026. It's the way of things. But before we wave a fond farewell to a year that actually ended four months ago – and don't you dare remind us that we're totally undeniably ⅓ of the way through 2025 already – we're wrapping things up here by ceremonially rolling up the red carpet Indieventure-style. If this isn't your first trip around the sun with us, you'll know that mostly means "Rebecca gets very excited about award show stats", but this year we have some insider insight as well, since Rachel actually appeared on the BBC as part of their BAFTA Games coverage! If industry accolades chat isn't your thing, don't worry, though, because we've also taken this opportunity to revisit some indie games from 2024 that we really wanted to cover but – mainly for reasons of there being so many of the things – didn't get around to until now. Stick around for belated chats about Anthology of the Killer, Arco, Arctic Eggs, Echo Point Nova, and Loco Motive, as well as brief swings by Lorelei and the Laser Eyes (again) and Vampire Therapist… plus more Blue Prince because we simply can't help ourselves. Last but not least, this episode's batch of hyperfixations sees Rebecca trying to reconcile the cognitive dissonance of falling hard for historical girl power pop opera Six: The Musical and sci-fi romance gacha game Love & Deepspace during the same two-week period; Liam confirming what we already suspected about Strange Scaffold's latest game, survival horror match-3 mashup Creepy Redneck Dinosaur Mansion 3 (it's really good!); and Rachel discovering that The Rehearsal: Season 2 is completely unlike The Rehearsal: Season 1 and makes for strange and compelling watching. Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Find him on Instagram at @newbsmusic. Meanwhile, you can find us at indieventurepodcast.co.uk or wherever you listen to podcasts. Don't forget that you can now join our dedicated Discord too, and be sure to check out our new Steam Curator page if you simply still can't get enough of us!

The show is now receiving its fully staged premiere at The Lowry in Salford and Laura is reprising her performance for this new iteration of its journey. 42 Balloons is inspired by the highly improbable true story of how Larry, and his partner Carol Van Deusen, convinced their friends and family to help Larry achieve his dream of flying. Featuring an 80s pop-inspired score, 42 Balloons questions how far you would go to make your dreams come true; is the sky actually the limit, and what happens if it doesn't all go to plan?Laura joined Six The Musical's UK & International tour cast in April 2023, starring as Anne Boleyn. She has taken a break from the show to do 42 Balloons and is set to return to the company to finish off her run later in the year. Some of Laura's other theatre credits include performing with Bat Out Of Hell at the Big Night of Musicals (AO Arena Manchester), playing Claire in Ordinary Days directed by Julie Atherton (Cockpit Theatre), Dick Whittington and Jack & The Beanstalk (Royal & Derngate) and Eliza in Brass (Bernie Grant Arts Centre). Laura has worked as a choreographer, performed in concerts, appeared on screen and been part of many other projects. Recorded during a break from rehearsals, in this episode Laura discusses what it's like to be back in 42 Balloons, conquering her confidence with Six, navigating her career after leaving drama school without an agent and lots more. 42 Balloons runs at The Lowry in Salford 18th April - 19th May 2024. You don't have as much time as you think you do, so you better be prepared. At least that's how Joy Woods lives her life. She shares how she caught the acting bug, starting as a dancer but eventually fell in love with theatre and acting. She looks back on her time in “Little Shop of Horrors”, her audition process in “SIX The Musical” and the sisterhood among cast members. She moved around during the pandemic, “broke, alone and free”, realizing that part of her needed that freedom to grow. Now starring as Middle Allie in Broadway's “The Notebook”, Joy talks about the different aspects of the show, including the depth of its characters, and the unique experience of performing in a production that resonates deeply with audiences while also invoking intense feelings of nostalgia. She reflects on her personal connection to her character, and the things she's learned about herself in the process. Joy Woods made her Broadway debut in 2022, taking over the role of Catherine Parr in “Six The Musical”. She was part of the ongoing hit production of the off-broadway production of “Little Shop of Horrors,” returning to play the role of Audrey in 2023 after originating the role of Chiffon in the original 2019 revival cast. Her additional credits include the 2020 production of “Mac & Mabel” at City Center on Chorus!, the viral “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical”, and a 2023 production of “I Can Get It For You Wholesale” off-Broadway, and a 2023 production of “Dreamgirls,” which took place at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium. She has just opened “The Notebook” on Broadway as Middle Allie. You might think I'd be the target audience for Six. I am, after all, obsessed with reframing old stories so as to give women some power they otherwise might not have in their narratives. But while Six seems to think it's doing that, it almost feels like the opposite. The premise is paper thin. The six wives of Henry VIII gather together to put on a show and have a contest to see who had it worse. (Spoiler alert?) That's really all there is to the show. Each wife sings a song about her troubles and then they spend the last five minutes trying to imagine an alternate history. That is literally all there is to the show. It's a variety show disguised as a musical. Which, you know, fine, what do I care? Variety shows can be fun. I resent it, though, and I suppose it's because they're framing it as if they are doing these historical women a favor by dressing them up in pop star girl boss outfits and giving them some bland songs with vocal calisthenics to sing. Somehow I doubt any of Henry VIII's wives would appreciate it. They call it a history-mix. Get it? It's like a remix but with history. “Welcome to the show, to the histo-remix…” can be heard in Broadway's SIX The Musical, currently playing to a full house every night at the Lena Horne Theatre. SIX tells the story of Henry VIII's six wives as they battle (well, sing for their lives, that is) to determine who leads their band! The current Queens on Broadway, however, are no stranger to their roles - they're all reprising the roles from the “Aragon” tour of the production! Olivia plays ANNA OF CLEVES and Gabriela plays CATHERINE PARR. Each of them brings a unique and different take on their respective queens, and I am so excited to bring you their stories in today's episode!
