To live selflessly seems like one of the most courageous and freeing decisions a person can make. A theme of selfishness and selflessness kept making its way to me, so I'm bringing the theme to this episode! Neil and I talk about the theme of selfishness or the “What's in it for me?” mentality and people embracing the opposite by being selfless. We discuss what it takes to change from one side to the other, selfishness to selflessness. Now, we're all human, and thinking about ‘self' is natural. For our talk, “selfish” isn't referring to the self-care version of “putting yourself first.” Selfishness in this episode is the kind of “selfish” that puts ‘self' at the expense of others. During the episode, I read quotes from Neal A. Maxwell and James E. Faust to help identify what it means to embody “selfishness.” They inspired me to consider the way people interact with each other and show up, myself included. Neil and I exchange examples of selflessness and deeply inspiring stories of sacrifice that I'm almost certain will leave you wanting to be selfless. Hear our childhood memories, heroic stories we know of, and awe-inspiring moments of selfless behavior. Going from story to story we dispel myths about the perception of success, competition, and worldly possession. Our perception of these ideas, usually influenced by society, impacts the way we interact with each other more than we think. We're taking time to deconstruct selfishness and build selflessness. Selfishness has layers: the deeds we do, what we wish for others, and more. Each layer is suffocating. More selflessness can be a freeing experience. While Neil and I talk, we find that sacrifice and personal growth are pathways to selflessness. The only thing left for us to do is make an effort to live selflessly like the stories in this episode.   Time Stamps: [00:38] - The first spark of inspiration for our talk today is from a Neal A. Neil Patel is a New York Times Bestselling author. The Wall Street Journal calls him a top influencer on the web, Forbes says he is one of the top 10 marketers, and Entrepreneur Magazine says he created one of the 100 most brilliant companies. He was recognized as a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 30 by President Obama and a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 35 by the United Nations.   “Have the mindset of testing. What works today may not work a year from now. If you don’t keep testing, you’re not going to thrive and succeed.” Neil Patel   Worst investment ever Creating a business to solve his own problem About 10 years ago, Neil’s website, at the time, was doing pretty well, so much so that sometimes he’d get a flood of traffic from social media. This upsurge in traffic would cause his servers to go down. This sounds like a good problem to have, right? While Neil appreciated the tremendous traffic, he had to pay for more and more servers. But then, in most cases, he would never use the extra resources. He thought to himself that it would be a good idea to be able to pay for the resources when he needed them, and not pay for them when he didn’t. Taking matters into his own hands Neil figured that there must be other people who were in a similar situation paying for all these resources and not using most of them. “What if we combine all our servers and have one big infrastructure, and we can each scale up and down as we want?” he thought to himself. Right there and then, a business idea hatched. Neil went to work to start Vision Web Hosting. The multibillion idea that sucked While Neil’s idea was a good one and would have seen him make millions of dollars, a few things turned it into his worst investment ever. First, Neil had no experience in hosting. Second, he picked partners that had no experience either and just paid them because they told him they could do it. Third, hosting was just not Neil’s core focus. He was doing many other things that had him distracted, and so he wasn’t focusing on it. Essentially, Neil ended up spending over a million dollars to start a business that wasn’t generating any revenue. He didn’t even get to launch it. His partners couldn’t figure out how to execute his idea. Eventually, Neil folded the business and had to figure out how to repay all the money that he borrowed to start the business. Lessons learned Ideas are worthless if not executed right Ideas are a dime a dozen. They are worthless unless you pick and execute the right ones. Partner with experienced people Pick business partners who have done it before because they come with learnings instead of starting from scratch and having to learn on the job. Start a business with a minimum viable product If you’re going to start a business, start with a minimum viable product and get it out there. You are never going to have a perfect product. It’s never going to be amazing. Just get something out there and improve it over time. Andrew’s takeaways Sometimes you’re just not ready to join the big leagues You may have a great idea that you want to launch in the global market, but before you go competing in the big leagues, ask yourself if you’re ready to do it. Do you have confidence in your operations? Do you have the money to do it? Do you have the right workforce? If not, accept, pull the plug and wait until you’re ready. Four main things to look for when investing in a startup 1. Trust Do you trust the team that you’re investing in? Usually, there’s no hack to trust. Trust comes over time. 2. The idea What’s the startup’s idea, and is it a viable one? 3. Execution Is the team able to execute on this idea? If the answer is no, it doesn’t matter that the idea is excellent, it doesn’t matter that you trust the team, the idea won’t work. 4. Money Ultimately, you never want to be the only one providing money to any startup that you’re involved in. The startup should have other sources of investment funds. Learn the 18 Questions for Pre-Revenue Valuation of a Startup. Actionable advice Experiment, experiment, experiment. Don’t wait. Don’t say, “Oh, I got to learn more. I’m gonna do it next week.” Just go experiment, do it as quickly as possible, and learn from your mistakes. Learning from your mistakes is a vital part because you don’t have to be the smartest person to succeed if you make a lot of mistakes, but you avoid making the same ones over and over again. Eventually, the right ones will be the only ones that are left. No. 1 goal for the next 12 months Neil’s number one goal for the next 12 months is to double up on his traffic. He’s looking to gain another 10 million visitors a month. Neil Rosen has been an entrepreneur for most of his life. After graduating college he taught elementary school for 10 years prior to starting his first business, a children’s furniture store which he built into a chain of five stores before selling. Next came a public school information business, The School Report, a business started with his wife Roseann that supported the real estate industry by supplying 3rd party public school information realtors could share with potential home buyers. He sold that business to a large media company, stayed on, and it was sold again a year later to an Internet real estate company. Not done yet, Neil and Roseann started eWayDirect, an internet software business that helps consumer businesses build email lists and send emails to prospects and customers. While Neil has retired from running that company (after 20 years), it continues in business today. And if that wasn’t enough, Neil and Roseann have bought and flipped over 30 houses since they have been married.Today Neil is working on a Trivia game and writing children’s books and TV shows. “Trust the process, follow your curiosity, and don’t get to wrapped up in what other people are doing.” - Neil Soni In this episode of Nat Chat we have Neil Soni. Neil and I originally connected over Twitter a few years ago as members of a startup incubator alumni network. While Neil was an undergrad, he started a company called “College Zen” to help prospective students get matched up with current students to get a real feel for the school. That startup didn’t work out, but the people he met and the experience he got from it turned into his next few roles, including his most recent work, as an “innovation consultant” for Estee Lauder. I wanted to talk to Neil for a few reasons: He’s had an extremely varied career during and after college, from starting that first company, to leading growth at another, to doing this innovation consulting, and now starting a beer company of all things. He is one of the more well read people I know, and draws deeply from history, philosophy, and science in his discussions. These can lead to really wide ranging discussions on anything when we talk, and our catch ups tend to run about as long as this interview. And he’s also great at testing ideas while maintaining safe alternatives. He was able to try out a number of startup ideas while doing his consulting work, giving him the best of both worlds. A steady income he could rely on, but also the flexible hours he needed to test startup ideas. Now that one’s working, he’s able to leave with much more security than he would if he were jumping in blind. We’re down to the numbers game, folks. Don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll still have the name calling, threats, promises, rallies, commercials and more – I didn’t say the campaign is over – but all focus now turns to a single number: 270. What’s the best path for both candidates to get there? And what’s it like inside the campaigns in the final days. Few would know better than Neil Newhouse; because he’s been there. Neil was lead pollster four years ago for Mitt Romney’s 2012 Presidential campaign. He is partner and co-founder of Public Opinion Strategies, which the New York Times once described as the country’s “leading Republican polling company.” Neil himself is 3-Time winner of “Pollster of the Year” by the American Association of Political Consultants. He has seen and done a lot. And yet, as you might imagine, he’s never seen anything like this campaign. I know it’s naïve, but I keep getting amazed at how many political professionals I talk with who’ve been doing this for years – dozens of campaigns and so many Presidential elections – and yet to a person, they’ve never seen anything like this one. Neil didn’t hold back. He outlines the path to 270 for each candidate – which states must they win. Which ones we should watch on Tuesday. But he also calls this the Nose-Holder election. Trump and Clinton have some of the highest unfavorable ratings of any candidates in history. Among his really interesting points: Most of the time, you want your candidate in the news – you want the headlines. This go round, the only time Trump or Clinton gets attention is when something negative is happening. No news really might be good news in this campaign. The other thing he says we should watch for? Enthusiasm. Turnout will be key in a vote where supporters aren’t so much enthusiastic for their candidate as they are disgusted with the other. We talked as well about what’s next – no matter who wins, what will the political, social, and economic divides in our country look like. There’s no sugar-coating: While Neil sees a way out, he shares the view of so many others that we likely have dark days ahead – for the Republican and Democratic parties, and even for the country. What I liked most about this conversation: Neil has given much – maybe all – of his professional life to politics and governing. This guy cares, and that comes through loud and clear in his ideas and his tone. Whichever side you’re on, I think you’ll appreciate his concern, and I think you’ll really like this conversation.
