To be a follower of Jesus in a foreign land is to be part of a long history of people staying true in attitude, actions, behaviors, and beliefs. This kind of devotion is spoken of by the prophets and modeled by Jesus. And the metaphor used to illustrate this kind of life is the image of “living stones being built into a spiritual house.” Just as rocks were memorials to God's power and action, so too shall we be living reminders in our current communities.
The letters of Peter to the scattered Christians in Asia Minor are a shepherd's encouragement and exhortation to remain fiercely faithful to Jesus while living in a foreign land. The social, political, and economic realities that cause suffering and tragedy will continue to be harsh and difficult. Nevertheless, followers of Jesus can and should embrace a “living hope” that is found in the identity, fidelity, and teleology of the people of God. (Don't worry. We'll explain it all!) To understand this, we must be reminded of the context of these early Christians and the identities that so transformed their worldview.

Voiced by actress, Keira Knightly, Charlotte, the movie is an animated drama that tells the true story of Charlotte Salomon, a young German-Jewish painter who comes of age in Berlin on the eve of the Second World War. Fiercely imaginative and deeply gifted, she dreams of becoming an artist. Her first love applauds her talent, which emboldens her resolve. But the world around her is changing quickly and dangerously, limiting her options, and derailing her dream. When anti-Semitic policies inspire violent mobs, she leaves Berlin for the safety of the South of France. There she begins to paint again and finds new love. But her work is interrupted, this time by a family tragedy that reveals an even darker secret. Believing that only the extraordinary will save her, she embarks on the monumental adventure of painting her life story, Life? or Theatre? At The Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts, where the film was featured with Q &A on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day and National Film Day Canada, I sat down with Screenwriter, David Bezmozgis, to talk about how the film came to light and its relevance amidst the rise of antisemitism today. On today's episode I am joined by Joe & Mell Hashey, the creators of The Strong Family Co! The Hashey family was living a normal life. Joe was a high school teacher and business owner. Mell was a former social worker turned stay-at-home mom of three. Then 2020 happened and turned their family upside down. They found themselves giving up their “dream home” and moving 2,000 miles away to a town where they didn't know anybody. It was the best thing that could have happened for their family. Joe and Mell used their experience to build the Strong Family Co. framework that any family can use to establish values and stress free family leadership. This episode carries content warnings for discussion of death. With the Cause stretched thin, it is up to the Blue Channel to rearm, resupply, and restore their allies. It should be a simple operation, but each delivery of supplies comes with its own new revelations. Some—like the arrival of new supplies from their freebooting friends of Carmine Bight—are welcome surprises. Others, like new details about the Afflictions, are stunning developments. And one hangs over the others: a revelation of the most mundane sort, like the heading of a memo, or the typeface of a meeting's minutes… This week on PALISADE: Worth the Trouble Pt. 2 A dried up cityscape / My twisted personality / My forgotten past / My distorted memories Dossier Organizations Jade Kill: Based in Joyous Guard, this military arm of the Cause is operated by the Delegate liberation faction known as Reunion and supported by Kalar Anakalar's (he/him) Giantkiller unit and a wing of Swordbreakers. Led by August Righteousness (he/him). Violet Cove: The Dim Liturgy claim to have seen the Divine Devotion's arrival coming in their sacred text: A battered and corrupted backup of Crystal Palace's final predictions for the future. Now the two cults work together to oust the Bilats... and perhaps to do more intriguing things, as well. Grey Pond: With members of the Oxblood Clan, the Company of the Spade, and the Shale Belt's Concrete Front, these blue collar revolutionaries are experts at getting the Cause the equipment it needs (and maintaining what it has when that's the only available option). Carmine Bight: From ramshackle additions to the rocky shores of Rifle Island, Captain Skelton Knaggs (he/him) and his fearsome flotilla launch rusted pirate vessels beneath the waves, guided by a coalition of Hyphan navigators. Rose River: Though they are undoubtedly committed to the Cause, this unique research unit (combining Veronique (she/her), her Divine Fealty (any pronouns), and their followers with an out-of-time NEH Sleep Detachment squad) hope for a day when they can be something other than soldiers. The Branched: A post-human society of beings who have transformed their bodies into forms terrifying and spectacular and free—only to have the threat of war force them to rebuild themselves as soldiers first and foremost. After centuries of fighting a purely defensive war, the Branched have now begun to strike into the Principality's territory. The Sable Court: These Hyphan witches once lived only on the eastern shores of Partizan's Lake Timea, horns and antlers glittering in the light of Girandole. But today, they soar through the sea of stars, following the same Strand paths that their ancestors once did. New Earth Hegemony: Once, the NEH was massive, galactic-scale power that threatened conquest of The Twilight Mirage. It was reduced to a single fleet—now lost—which provided its inhabitants endless, digital life. People Jesset City (he/him): After helping to kick off Millennium Break on Partizan, Jesset served as one of its major leaders during its expansion across the Principality. Now, he uses his talents in Hollow and Altar engineering, piloting, and cipher breaking on behalf of the Grey Pond unit of the cause. Still considers himself to be a member of the Party of the Wolf, though those designations have largely fallen from use. General Tomorrow Mourning (she/her): Leader of the Qui'Err Coalition's forces en route to the Twilight Mirage. Silverbrick (they/them): A “visionary” architect, technologist, and urban planner of the Frontier Syndicate. Kalar Anakalar, the Giantkiller (he/him): This legendary member of Millennium Break is much more than his nom de guerre. Loyal comrade, proud father, and ever faithful believer. Former member of the Society for Banners and Bright Returns, one of the founding organizations of Millennium Break. Partial Palisade (he/him): A man who was once a Divine, now living in the shell of a being quite unlike what he once was. Griesel Sunset (he/him): Coriolos' father, a zealous Devotee. Currently lives on the Isle of the Broken Key. Iklins Slinger (she/her): Carmine Bight's sword arm. Naval tactics. Fire and fury. Fiercely loyal to Captain Skelton Knaggs. Mustard Red (she/her): A cyborg who once served as a member of Brink Proxy, with a speciality in surveillance. Joined the Cause during the Devotees expansion onto Palisade. Places Bontive Valley: Blessed by the departed divine Bounty, the Valley provides the Bilats with fruit that never rots and hyper-nutritional grain. The Shale Belt: A low, resource-filled mountain range in the north-central of Palisade. Home to the Concretists and their revolutionary Concrete Front, a secular and technologically-minded group with roots in the Twilight Mirage. They take their names from favorite artistic works and have blended their bodies with a special concrete (and some respiratory cybernetics) that aids in their breathing. The Brink: A space station and transport hub that orbits the outer edge of the Twilight Mirage. Divines The “Divine” Arbit: The amoral machine turned de facto treasurer keeps the Frontier Syndicate a step ahead in all matters of commerce. Mysteries The Five Afflictions: A group of “monstrous” beings that haunt the dark corners of Palisade. They have been named as follows: Dust a.k.a Pride's Mirror a.k.a. The Looking Glass Refrain a.k.a. Yesterday's Reprise a.k.a. The Ghastly Chorus Ravel a.k.a. Labyrinth's Thread a.k.a. The Hedge Maze Cleave a.k.a. Whetstone's Opposite a.k.a. Episode S3 E11, was inspired by a conversation that I had with a classy, beautiful sisterfriend who finds herself smitten by a handsome, charming man who boomeranged back into her life. One night my friend called me and we talked into the wee hours of the morning about the "situationship" (her word not mines) that she's in. It's natural for a heterosexual woman to desire the attention and companionship of a man. But at what cost do we entertain a man? This is what I talk about in this episode. Btw, my friend granted me permission to share her story. CONNECT WITH DEBORA Want to change your life? It's a bit late - had a great event on Japanese whisky last night! ----------- How much do you know about Finland? Yep, probably about the same I did. Not much. Turns out, there's a whole lot to learn. I started, oddly enough, with a well-timed episode of Timesuck learning about the sniper known as the White Death from the Winter War of WW2. Besides a fascinating story, it taught me that Finland is both Nordic and Scandinavian, yet its culture - everything from its mythology/pantheon to its drinking culture - are closer to Germany and Russia than to Sweden or Denmark. Teerenpeli is a symbol of that identity. Fiercely independent, making whisky where few others are (they're the only active distillery making whisky in Finland!), Teerenpeli is out to prove that Finland has a lot to offer the world whisky community. I think they just might. Thanks also to previous guest Fred Barnet of Anthem Imports for the introduction! _________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so! Watch Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, listen to The 2000-Year-Old Man, read his autobiography, All About Me, and you will know why. But for me, having known Mel for 25 years, ‘funny' is not the first word I would use to describe this extraordinary man. Fiercely proud of his children and grandchildren, the first one to pick up a phone to a friend in trouble, refusing an award in opposition to the Iraq War and waiting to accept it later from President Obama. To Mel, food and wine are crucial—many of his life's important moments occurred in restaurants. And, as for wine, he will tell you himself. Today at his home we are together. Lucky me. We're going to talk about movies, family, memories and more. And be prepared to laugh because Mel Brooks is indeed funny. For more information, recipes, and ingredients, go to: Web: https://rivercafe.co.uk/Instagram: www.instagram.com/ruthiestable4Facebook: https://en-gb.facebook.com/therivercafelondon/ For any podcast enquires please contact: willem.olenski@atomizedstudios.tv For more podcasts from iHeartRadio, visit the iheartradio app, apple podcasts, or wherever you listen to your favourite shows. On this episode, we chat with owner and founder Jaida of Fiercely Feminine Studios. In her own words: Photography is what I love! Getting to focus my camera on women from all walks of life and seeing how it empowers and transforms them is priceless. For 7 years, I've nurtured this business and have watched it grow. I've always understood the power of photography, but even more so now that I'm a mom. It's here to hold the moments still and to pass on for future generations. Photography also helps me to celebrate myself, to take time for me, to feel beautiful even with chaos. I believe that every woman should feel beautiful and have at least one beautiful portrait of herself. As a photographer, I am committed to giving each client a photography experience where she can breathe, love on herself, and shine. When I'm not capturing the beauty of my clients, I love to travel, lay on the beach, read books and spend time with my loved ones. The visionary goals of Fiercely Feminine Studios is to empower women of color to love themselves unapologetically through a self-care based photography experience. Her mission is to provide our clients with a transformational photography experience where she is able to prioritize herself, if only for a few hours, and leaves remembering exactly how fiercely feminine she is. She is fierce, she is feminine, and unique in many ways. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/therosehourpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/therosehourpodcast/support

- We properly wrap up our Stop Calling Me Strong Series with an always timely conversation about self-care and pleasure. In episode S3 E9, I sat down with Certified Erotic Blueprint Pleasure & Intimacy Coach, Tosh Patterson. Tosh, who teaches women how to simplify life so they can reignite their sensual/sexual self, shares how the strong black woman syndrome led to bouts of anxiety and drove her into a deep depression. Because her family and friends had held her in such high regard, she struggled in secrecy and silence. Tosh shares how she broke free and together we unpack: What causes the strong black woman (SBW) to stop hearing her own voice What keeps SBW from asking for support and receiving it when offered What it takes to become a woman who confidently asks for what she needs and wants What the SBW is encouraged to do even when she's falling apart The link between setting better boundaries and vulnerability How perfectionism keeps the SBW bound The impact of Black Excellence, i.e., striving for material success—cars, houses, clothes, degrees—on the lives of black women What the SBW does that undermines intimacy in her most cherished relationships What are self-care and pleasure and why it matters so much How to build the prioritizing self-care and pleasure muscle What it takes to heal the SBW Syndrome To work with Tosh on retreat or through 1:1 coaching, email her. Tosh co-authored The Path to Pleasure: A Black Woman's Guide to Healing Her Inner Goddess, Igniting Her Spirit, & Awakening Her Pleasure - Available on Amazon. Need a Retreat? I had so much fun recording and editing this installment of the Stop Calling Me Strong series with Advocate, DEI Facilitator, Healer, Teaching Artist, Activist, Playwright, and Stand-Up Comic Sheila Gaskins. In S3 E8, I talked to Sheila, who is the author of the forthcoming book of poetry and prose, A Whistling Girl and a Crowing Hen Never Comes to a Very Good End and Other Things My Mama Said, about: why this series topic resonates so strongly with her the obstacles to black women being soft, sweet, and giddy how she, like many black women, was forced into a masculine role how labeling black women strong benefits white supremacy what her black male therapist said that changed everything what black women ought to give themselves permission to be I had a load of ah-ha moments during this conversation. Are you a strong black woman? Do you feel free? In episode S3 E7 of the Stop Calling Me Strong series, I talk with therapist turned Life Coach, Diane Jones, who lives in Mexico where she is happily designing a 'soft life' for herself. In this juicy conversation full of gems, Diane, who says she too was once plagued by the strong black woman syndrome, shares how hitting a wall in her profession changed the trajectory of her practice and personal life. We talked about so much, including: how, like the typical strong black woman, she allowed unaddressed anxieties to pile up why the strong black woman rarely makes choices based on what she needs and desires how, when making major shifts, the SBW ought to move why strong black women get no reciprocity what SBW aren't allowed to say out loud what typically is the root cause of SBW's emotional eating why strong black women are bound and how SBW can break free! In American Sex Tape, Jameka Williams captures the reader's gaze and stares right back. In this stunning debut collection, Williams offers a deeply personal investigation into how Americans (herself included) have been duped, buying into classism, sexism, and racist beauty ideals, while sacrificing self-love and self-determination. With whip-fast profanity and fiery humor, she charts a tender, exalting, and vibrant path to freedom from mirrors, stages, and screens. Fiercely feminist, Black, American, and powerful, Williams speaks for a generation of obsessive social media influencers and consumers, revealing the complex ways in which we are actors and witnesses, and victims in our public and private performances. Though we may be permanent residents of this soulless cultural landscape, this stunning collection refuses to let it define us. ___________________________________ Speakers: Jameka Williams holds an MFA in poetry from Northwestern University. In Episode #49 of the More Than Miles Podcast, physical therapists Dr. Kate Mihevc Edwards and Dr. Kacy Seynders interview Sports Nutritionist and Registered Dietician, Lindsey Elizabeth Cortes, MS, RD, CSSD. Lindsey has worked with hundreds of clients on improving their lifestyle nutrition and fueling for performance in many sports arenas including endurance events. She is the founder and owner of Rise Up Nutrition and specializes in working with female athletes. In the podcast interview, Lindsey talks about her interests in health as relates to movement, nutrition, and holistic lifestyle factors. She has a unique background specializing in sports nutrition, combatting “RED-s” (Relative Energy Deficiency in sport), and supporting the nutrition needs of individuals according to their unique physiology and training cycles. Within the interview, Lindsey discusses some common symptoms of under fueling such as low energy, hair loss, abnormal lab results, easy to bruise, extreme coldness or temperature sensitivity and others. Some of these may surprise you! In discussing her sports and running background with Dr. Kate and Kacy, Lindsey talks about growing up as a gymnast and regularly playing sports with her siblings before getting into track and sprinting events in high school and college. Her foray into distance running began when she was in graduate school and took up “slow jogging” with her roommate as a way to stay active and allow a hamstring injury that she had sustained during sprinting to heal. She fell in love with the ½ marathon distance, which she describes as her favorite to run and race in currently! She also talks about how she has honed in a specialized method in working with athletes for 12 week sessions to become “Fierce, Fit, and Fueled.” She wants her clients to be physically fit but also mentally in a good place via their food choices, relationship with food, and sports performance! Her philosophy is that, “You have to be a healthy human first before you can be a healthy athlete!” (and be fuelled for your sport). The interview also includes Lindsey's tips on how to improve nutrition in easy ways, timing of fueling for performance as an endurance athlete and the importance of macronutrient composition of pre-workout and post-workout meals. You will certainly take some useful information from this podcast on maximizing the enjoyment and nutrition from your food choices as an endurance athlete!
Our Stop Calling Me Strong series continues with Speaker, Teacher, Advocate, and certified Life Coach, Jacqueline Lofton, once upon a time the quintessential strong black woman. Jacqueline took care of everybody and everything at home and at work and did so seemingly flawlessly. That is, everybody got her care but her. In S3 E6, Jacqueline talks about having a breakdown in 2017, which had her asking.. What about ME? When can I be vulnerable? When can I depend on other people to take care of ME? When does somebody care about ME? She shares what happened that turned her breakdown into a breakthrough. We explore: What's often at the root of the strong black woman's drive to give and do too much How and why black parents crush their children's dreams. The role that Black Excellence plays in strong black women's lives We wrap up our conversation with ways the SBW can get off the hamster wheel of "I'm not enough" and "I got something to prove." Our Stop Calling Me Strong Series continues. In episode S3 E5, I talk to Angela Williams who, only months after her 22-year-old son rear-ended a tractor-trailer, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Angela shares how the expectation that she be always be strong, even when she was bedridden, left her feeling unimportant, abandoned, and dependent on her 80-something-year-old grandfather. She speaks candidly about her 16-year marriage, how it was tested and almost fell apart during this time. Angela and I talk about lessons that that illness taught her, like learning to communicate her feeling and needs and setting boundaries that support her emotional, physical and spiritual health and wellbeing. It doesn't matter if you're married or single, the most influential relationship that lasts a lifetime is the one you have with yourself. Self-love can influence how we comfort ourselves, motivate ourselves and fight for injustice. That's why MPR News with Angela Davis is turning inward. She's talking with two self-love experts about what self-compassion is, what it isn't and what stands in the way of loving ourselves. Guests: Porsche Peak Gordin is a licensed marriage and family therapist and co-owner of Peak Behavioral Health, which is a mental health clinic in Little Canada, MN. Kristin Neff is an associate professor of educational psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. For our Stop Calling Me Strong Series, in episode S3 E4, I talk with Love Coach Renee Miller who knew she was a catch. At least on paper. But her success, or lack thereof, in dating told a different story. When she dated, Renee, like a lot of strong black women led with her achievements and success. Consequently, she got nowhere with love. When Renee, a self-proclaimed serial dater, got intentional about changing the trajectory of her love-life she attracted the love of her life. We talked about the power of vulnerability, healing, letting yourself be seen, and much more. Renee Miller, MBA, PCC, supports women in remembering who they are in life and love. Qurell says she enjoys being seen as strong, she, however, takes issue with how people tend to treat strong women when they finally need help and support. With Qurell, who unapologetically proclaimed 'I DON'T need a man', we explore: how does a woman make a man feel needed why do men, particularly black men, so need to feel needed who she turns to for emotional gratification and support what she does when being vulnerable with a man "fails" and more. Today's episode with Lindsey Schwartz is full of fire! She shares her story of how she came to find her true calling in God and found herself beyond what she could humanly do and began to trust in God and His vision for her life. We talked about: - How when we get to the end of ourselves, this is when our faith steps in - How your story connects to Him - The importance of finding a community that dreams big About Lindsey: Lindsey Schwartz is an entrepreneur, top podcast host, and best-selling author. Fiercely committed to supporting other women, Lindsey invests her time in mentoring women and girls of all ages—from high achieving entrepreneurs to high school students. She's also an investor in female-founded companies including beverage brand Lite Pink. As a sought after speaker, Lindsey travels around the world inspiring women to get out of their own way and into action around their big ideas, and helping them create the careers they've always dreamed of.
