It's Acadiana: Out to Lunch

When you hear the words "Gen Z," what word comes to mind? If you’re over 40, the answer is more than likely dismissive. When you look at the data, though, there’s one word that should come to mind: entrepreneurial. In 2023, a record 5 million new businesses were started in the United States. A massive portion of them were started by Gen Z entrepreneurs. About 50% of Gen Z respondents say they intend to start a business in the next five years. And about half already have side hustles. Yes, many are looking to become content creators or searching for work-life flexibility. But plenty others are starting brick and mortar companies. Like Geth Aguirre. At 19 years old, Geth launched Black Cat Coffee House, on Lafayette’s Northside. Geth was scrappy and resourceful in getting started, sourcing used espresso machines and acquiring excess inventory from another local coffee shop that closed. Within a year, Geth had paid off her first round of business loans and the shop has continued to grow its customer base. Today she has eleven employees and serves up to 200 customers each day. You don’t have to own a business to be a boss. At 21 years old, Kaitlyn Azemar became the youngest general manager in the history of Dogtopia, a national franchise of dog daycare and training centers with 270 locations nationwide. The company offers boarding, training and dog spa services. Kaitlyn trained her first dog at nine years old, a maltese poodle mix named Ragin that she taught 50 tricks. Fast forward a decade, and she left school to get into animal training full time. Kaitlyn uses a special training called LIMA, or least invasive, minimally assertive. The method prioritizes looking for physiological reasons why a dog might misbehave. She maintains a training certification from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. As a boss, Kaitlyn manages a company with 15 employees, many around her own age, whch, as you might imagine, comes with unique Gen Z challenges. Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. Managing social media for 275 locations might sound like a daunting task, but for Dogtopia, it's a chance to connect with dog lovers everywhere. Toni Teplitsky, Senior Director of Marketing, reveals how her team keeps content fresh, local, and heartfelt—while staying true to their playful brand. From leveraging AI to embracing the power of real, raw storytelling, Toni shares what it takes to stand out in a world full of adorable dog content. Full Episode Details  Dogtopia's social media isn't just about cute dog photos (though there are plenty of those). With 275 locations across North America, Toni and her team have mastered the art of balancing efficiency with heartfelt storytelling. At the core of their success is authenticity. Whether it's showcasing dogs having the time of their lives with “canine coaches,” celebrating local flair with events like Halloween parades, or capturing raw, unfiltered moments of joy, Dogtopia's content feels personal and genuine. It's not about polished perfection—it's about showing the real, messy, lovable lives of dogs and their humans. Recycling content is another key ingredient in their strategy. Instead of constantly churning out new material, Toni's team leans on high-performing posts from the past, giving them new life and introducing them to fresh audiences. As Toni explains, not every follower sees every post, so why not highlight what already works? This approach keeps their message consistent and their content machine running smoothly. With a clever mix of repurposed content, local insights, and emotional storytelling, Dogtopia proves that standing out in the crowded world of dog content doesn't mean reinventing the wheel—it just takes a little creativity and a lot of heart. In This Episode: 2:51 - Tackling social media's constant changes to stay relevant 4:10 - Balancing Dogtopia's corporate brand with local franchise voices 6:12 - How AI helps Dogtopia tweak posts at scale without losing its unique brand voice 7:40 - Creating platform-specific content and why speaking to each platform's strengths is key 8:54 - Feeding the content machine: why UGC and raw, authentic content are outperforming polished professional shoots 11:19 - Ensuring Dogtopia's content breaks through in a sea of dog-focused content online 12:35 - Recycling content: why repetition strengthens your message 14:32 - Making life easier for franchisees: how Dogtopia creates ready-to-use campaign toolkits 16:01 - Messaging that connects with pet parents at every stage, from first-time dog owners to seasoned pros 17:51 - How younger generations are reshaping trends in pet care 20:43 - Smart content strategies for evolving platforms—why “think smarter, not harder” is key 22:40 - The platforms Toni sees the most growth potential in 23:58 - How Dogtopia's foundation supports veterans, students, and adults with autism through the power of dogs 28:23 - Toni's advice for aspiring social pros Resources  Connect with Toni on LinkedIn Visit Dogtopia's Website Follow Dogtopia on Instagram Follow Dogtopia on TikTok Follow Dogtopia on Facebook Visit SocialPros.com for more insights from your favorite social media marketers.

It's time to get unstuck. Are you making the money you want? Are your relationships what you desire them to be? Is your health where you want it? If not, you are sabotaging yourself. Pat Pearson, M.S.S.W. author, and psychotherapist has found what you create in life is largely determined by what you think you deserve. This podcast focuses on the psychology of stopping self-sabotage and the recovery process of truly creating the life you want and deserve! Do you find yourself procrastinating? You have that report due at noon but you feel compelled to clean your office before sending it. That is a form of procrastination. Procrastination is one of the most common forms of Self-Sabotage. Do you find yourself chronically worried about things that might or might not happen, but eventually never do? What is holding you back from quitting your job, taking a big career leap, or even taking time to rest by traveling and taking vacation time. That can all be attributed to chronic worry. That chronic worry can impact your productivity and overall happiness leading to self-sabotage. Substance abuse, and stress eating can all be considered self-sabotage. It is a journey to recover from these habits but you don't have to spend your life consumed by substance abuse, procrastination, and stress eating. First, why are the animals we share our lives with called pets?  Where did that word come from? The word first entered the English language in Scotland and Northern England around 1500 and pet meant a spoiled child or a favorite. Ah, that's probably where the expression teacher's pet comes from. Hear how it evolved to mean beloved animal companions.   Are you considering daycare for your dog?  Wondering how to find one that your dog will love and also relieve your mind that you've left it in safe hands for the day? Or maybe you want to know what is the big deal about it is and why to spend the money at all on daycare when your dog seems fine staying at home.  My guest is Neil Gill, the CEO and president of Dogtopia, the leading provider of dog daycare in North America and he will answer these questions and give you an insider's view into the world of doggie daycare.   This week's creature feature is rather macabre and creepy. But it's fitting as Halloween is just past, and it could also be an Easter story as well. Here is a story about a dog, I'm calling, Never Say Die. Another mention of a cat being “resurrected” caught my eye.  October just ended and you have a few more days as a new month starts, to win our promotion and receive 3 months of free pet food. Have your pup's medical history ready to go Any good daycare will require proof of vaccinations ahead of time. They'll also want to know if your pet has been neutered or spayed by the time they're one year old, says Ryan Getwright, owner of Philly Dog School in Philadelphia, Pa. While daycares are unable to check if you are using flea and tick preventative care, they expect that you are, he says. If you don't have your dog on a flea and tick regimen now, start before you bring him to daycare. Ask about safety certifications While the daycare is not a vet, the attendants should know how to respond to health emergencies and how to provide basic first aid to your four-legged buddy. The Red Cross offers these certifications, says Getwright, and your daycare should always have one person on duty who is first aid and CPR certified. Look into cleaning protocols Your dog is at a higher risk of illness with so many pets in close proximity, says Jakob Hunt, vice president of operations and human resources for Dogtopia, a daycare chain with 30 locations in the United States. Because of this, you want to make sure the daycare has strict daily cleaning procedures in place. At Dogtopia, the playrooms are spot cleaned throughout the day, and then thoroughly cleaned during your dog's nap time, says Hunt. If something like kennel cough—which is equivalent to the human cold—is identified, the attendants will take even bigger precautions. “The sick dog will be placed in lockdown so the other dogs won't get sick,” explains Hunt. “Then all the rooms are cleaned. We try to contain the illness as best we can by limiting the amount of times attendants can go from room to room and dipping their shoes in a bleach mixture before they can leave a room.” Another tip: Check to see if the daycare has floor-to-ceiling walls. Since the majority of illnesses are airborne, half walls and chain-link fences won't stop them from spreading, explains Hunt. Prepare for an evaluation Before you sign on the dotted line, daycare attendants should give your dog an in-depth assessment without you present. “Just like at children's daycare, you won't be there during the day,” says Hunt. “We need to see how your dog will react without you there. It's our chance to learn as much about your pet as possible so we can give him the best care while you're at work or away.” While every dog daycare will have a different assessment format, a good one will look for some of the following things: how your pup responds to a dog crate, what parts of his body he doesn't like to have touched, and how your pet gets along with other dogs of different energy levels, temperaments, genders, and sizes. Attendants should take detailed notes to share with you afterward and to keep in your dog's file. But remember: Daycares aren't training facilities. “Your dog may be a wonderful pet, but he may not be a good fit for open play,” explains Hunt. “If that's the case, we'll recommend you socialize your dog and enroll him in training, and then come back in six months to get reevaluated.” Practice, practice, practice Daycare is basically an indoor dog park, so Getwright suggests bringing your dog to the outdoor version before you consider daycare. “If your dog doesn't like it, he won't enjoy it here,” he says. It's also a good way to see how your dog interacts with other animals. “Many dogs who have never been in open play don't know dog language,” says Hunt. “But when they hang around other dogs for a few days, they begin to learn it.” Then, when dogs approach your pooch in the daycare, he'll know the proper way to react. Ask about what's included Some dog daycares operate on an a la carte basis, says Hunt. Want Rufus to go on a walk? That'll cost you an extra $10 a day. Want Baxter to be petted throughout the day? That'll cost you $7. Those small additions add up to a big price tag. Ask the daycare manager what is included in the daily fee. Many places will accommodate your wishes for no extra charge. Ask what a typical day is like Schedules vary dramatically from daycare to daycare. Some are very structured, while others are looser. Choose a facility with a daily timeline that best suits your dog. However, make sure there's plenty of time for both play and relaxation included. “If you don't allow for rest, dogs get clumsy or grumpy because they're tired,” says Hunt. And they will get tired. Daycares should encourage dogs to play with one another under supervision for the majority of the day. Some facilities will offer indoor miniature jungle gym equipment for your dog to climb up and slide down. Some smaller daycares will take dogs for walks in small groups. “Your dog will be active and busy. He'll burn calories, he'll run around,” says Getwright. “He'll be wiped out when he gets home.” Inquire about meals Since both food allergies and food aggression in dogs are common, daycares should take precautions at chow time. Some facilities, like Philly Dog School, don't allow dog food at all. Dogs are given plenty of water throughout the day. Others, like Dogtopia, feed pets two to three times a day. However, the dogs have to eat in individual crates. Afterward, the attendants clean the room and make sure there are no leftover pieces of kibble lying around before the dogs are let out for playtime again. Learn what amenities are provided Many daycares allow owners to remotely check in on their pooches. Dogtopia has cameras in every room so you can watch Fido playing, eating, or napping on your phone or your computer, while Philly Dog School has an Instagram account you can follow so you can get a peek of his daily activities. Other chains boast movie theaters, spas, and theme days for events like March Madness. Figure out what additions are most important to you and your dog before making your final decision. 31: Building a Leading Dog Daycare in a Fragmented Industry with Alex Samios

A fragmented industry has no real major players that dominate the industry. There are few barriers to entry, and it allows you to become a disruptor—someone who comes in and shakes things up. If you implement a platform that does a better job of meeting demand, you could be well on your way to becoming a power-player in the market.  Alex Samios is the VP of Franchise Development with Dogtopia, the fastest growing franchise in the Pet Industry. Alex boasts over 25 years in the industry with experience on every side of franchising, from franchisee to franchisor. He shares his wealth of knowledge in this episode of Franchise Secrets. Outline of This Episode [0:35] Alex Samios of Dogtopia joines me [1:35] His background in franchising [4:15] Pet grooming to Health and Wellness [5:45] The purchase of Dogtopia [8:40] Acquiring a brand: Day one [12:30] Building a dream team [14:50] humanization of the dog  [16:55] What is Dogtopia? [23:35] Real estate and construction [34:30] Managing a changing industry [37:55] The concept of emotional Intelligence [40:00] Sales process of the emerging brand [45:35] Alex’s final advice Growing emerging franchises Alex got his start working with Papa Johns as a franchisee. In 4 short years, he had grown to 34 franchise locations. After 11 years in the pizza business, he was ready for the next thing. He knew he enjoyed the emerging franchise world and launched his own franchise, which he grew and sold 6 years later.  4 years ago, the investment group he is a part of purchased the Dogtopia franchise. At the time, it consisted of 26 locations. The founder wasn’t at a point where they could continue to grow the franchise. Alex and his fellow investors knew they could take this franchise and help it become a key player in the industry.  To hear their growth projections and how he made it happen, check out the episode! What does acquiring a brand look like? When you acquire a brand, there is an immediate level of distrust that must be overcome. They let the entire leadership team go and began to implement proper support for their franchise. Alex and his team went out into the field and built trust by spending time just listening to the franchisees.  They are constantly improving their model to better serve their franchisees and customers.  To do that, they wanted to source a leadership team that served the business. Their current CEO has 40 years of experience in franchising. The next closest comparison to their industry is childcare. Dogs have become humanized—they’re our babies, right? They found that sourcing their team from the childcare industry was the best fit for their company’s growth and culture.  Building a dream team in a fragmented industry A fragmented industry can be tough because there are so many small players (Rover, Dog Vaycay, etc.). There’s a lot of competition in the space. One way to combat the competition is by building a business with systems and processes in place, with great people, and a great sales process. Once your business establishes itself as a key player that’s scalable, you begin to disrupt the industry. In their case, they needed to hire people with a love of dogs paired with a love of sales.  80% of Dogtopia’s revenue is their daycare service for dogs. They also offer boarding and spa services. If a customer were to bring their dog for a trial run and anything happened to their beloved pet, their business would be lost and they’d blow up social media. That’s why it’s important to build a dream-team of well-trained staff who are emotionally intelligent and love what they do. Alex and I talk more details about Dogtopia and the concept of emotional intelligence—keep listening! What new franchisees don’t consider: Real Estate and construction Franchisees buying into the brand (any brand, really) need to deal with real estate sourcing and construction. For those new to the industry, they don’t realize how long of a process this can be. Alex mentioned that executing a lease can take up to 6 months, permitting up to 3 months, and 3 months to build out the space. Local laws and permitting have to be taken into consideration in this type of business. In this area, Dogtopia offers unparalleled support to its franchisees. For an extra fee, they will handle the process from finding the real estate to the complete build-out. But for every single grand opening of one of their locations, they send out a support team to assist with the opening for 10 days. This is unheard of in the industry! To hear more about this successful franchise and how Alex Samios led its growth, listen to the whole episode! [0:59] Josh introduces today’s guest, Neil Gill, the CEO and president of Dogtopia. [2:34] Josh welcomes Neil to Franchise Euphoria. [3:03] Neil gives a brief overview of his business background, which is layered with involvement in several franchise systems. The he discusses what led him to create the Dogtopia concept. [6:46] Neil shares that 74% of millennials are dog owners, and this individual is who Dogtopia targets. [9:02] When Neil came back to the US after he came out of retirement, he recognized that pet care was a growing sector. [10:40] While Neil believes that you can teach anyone to sell in the restaurant industry, he has found that in the lead generation business, you have to find individuals who can provide a level of service that is more innate. [12:23] Neil and Josh discuss the art of closing the deal in business culture. Neil remarks his original sales team was “afraid of the ask.” However, in the lead generation business, this is the key to success. [15:21] Dogtopia is the only brand in the US that specializes in dog daycare services. [17:42] Dogtopia focuses on three services for the dogs they care for: socialization, education, and exercise. [20:38] The Dogtopia philosophy surrounds the idea that they are creating better canine citizens and therefore give back to the community. [21:37] Neil explains how their dog training programs can actually benefit children who are learning to read with a program called Sit, Stay, Read. [23:43] Dogtopia currently has 115 locations and another 250 in the pipeline to open. [26:47] At the level of growth Dogtopia is at, the franchise team can be very selective about the type of franchisees they bring into the system.
