What would you say to church members who still feel like outsiders—even after years in their church? In this episode, Kerry and Becky share five encouraging suggestions to help those who feel on the outside begin building meaningful friendships and connections.
In a week filled with headlines about rising tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States, many people are asking a deeper question:What did Jesus say about times like this?In the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 24, Jesus spoke directly about wars, global unrest, fear, and the uncertainty that would mark the last days. But His message was not meant to create panic — it was meant to prepare and strengthen His followers.Whether you are a Christian, skeptical, or simply curious about Bible prophecy, this message will help you understand what Jesus really taught about turbulent times.Support the show ------------------------------------------WANT MORE?Say You Love Me 1: Building Healthy RelationshipsToxic 1: What are Toxic Thoughts? This sermon introduces the importance of "connecting small" (joining small groups or "Packs") as an essential part of spiritual formation. Connecting small isn't just a church program; it's a vital environment for maturing in our faith, making disciples, and fulfilling the Great Commission.Scripture ReferencesMatthew 28:19-20: The Great Commission—making disciples and teaching them to obey.1 Corinthians 3:1-2: Paul addressing spiritual infants who need milk, not solid food.Philippians 2:3-4: A call to spiritual adolescence: looking to the interests of others.1 Corinthians 4:15: "You have countless instructors in Christ, but you don't have many fathers."James 1:2-4: The testing of faith produces endurance, leading to maturity.Luke 24:13-35: The Road to Emmaus, where Jesus models different learning styles (Scripture, mentoring, and an immersive meal).1 John 4:7-8: "Let us love one another, because love is from God."Luke 10:5-6: Jesus instructs His disciples to look for a "person of peace."Key PointsThe Goal is Maturity Jesus didn't just save us; He called us to grow up in Him. Using James Fowler's "Stages of Faith," we can assess our maturity:Spiritual Infancy: Fully dependent on others for spiritual nourishment ("feed me").Spiritual Adolescence: Taking personal responsibility for your own spiritual growth.Spiritual Adulthood/Parenthood: Moving from independence to interdependence. You invest in others, walking alongside them through the testing of their faith to help them grow.Connecting Small Creates a Place to Learn Sunday mornings are great, but learning theory shows we need more than just a lecture. Small groups provide:Information (Lecture/Teaching)Apprenticeship (Mentoring from someone further along)Immersion (Catching the culture and presence of God by being in the environment) Jesus used all three on the Road to Emmaus. Small groups provide the apprenticeship and immersion that a Sunday service cannot fully offer.Connecting Small Gives Us a People to Love Maturity requires love. In a small group, we hear the hopes, fears, and pains of others. Loving people stretches our capacity and creates a dependency on God ("I don't know how to help them; God, You have to come through"). Loving God fuels our love for others, and loving others deepens our reliance on God.ConclusionWe don't connect small just to have another meeting on the calendar. We do it because we desire to grow and mature, we want a context to love people deeply, and we want to set the table for others to experience the healing and peace of Jesus.Calls to ActionAssess Your Stage: Are you an infant relying on others to feed you, an adolescent taking responsibility, or a parent investing in others?Join a Group: Don't settle for the "lecture" of Sunday morning. Join a small group to experience apprenticeship and immersion.Look for a Person of Peace: Pay attention to the people in your life. Who is God already preparing? Take the risk and invite them into your life and community. Support the show*Summaries and transcripts are generated using AI. Please notify us if you find any errors.

The title sounds careless and possibly scary, but before you blow a gasket, let me ask, “Have you reached sinless perfection yet?” We can pretend there is a secret in all our lives, but the truth is that it is not a secret at all: we still sin against God and each other. We might love God and others as we love ourselves, but we most certainly sin against God and others, too. This undeniable truth is a call to action to prepare for the inevitable. Like a wise financial steward who knows hard times are coming, he budgets for those difficult days. Do you ever feel like your brain is a "surprise encounter" in an RPG? You finally sit down to pray or be still, and within 15 seconds, your mind is bombarded by anxiety, distractions, or a "to-do" list that feels like a final boss. Spiritual formation isn't about having a perfectly silent mind: it is about having a redirected one.- The "Lev" Command Center: Why the Biblical word for "heart" actually refers to your inner monologue and how to guard it.- Fighting Lavos: Identifying the "proud obstacles" and strongholds that set themselves up against the truth of God in your mind.- The Art of the "Rep": Why a wandering mind isn't a failure, but an opportunity to train your "return" to God's presence.- The 3-Breath Return: A practical, 30-second tool to Acknowledge, Release, and Receive God's peace in the middle of your busiest day.Stop "button mashing" through your spiritual life and feeling like a fraud. Formation happens when we abide: and abiding starts with taking your thoughts captive.**********
Small groups are one of the most common ministries in the church — but are they actually producing disciples? In this episode, Scott and A.J. make the case that many churches have confused participation with transformation. Just because people show up to a group doesn't mean discipleship is happening. In fact, your small groups ministry might be the most dangerous ministry in your church — because you think discipleship is happening when it isn't. Scott Ball and A.J. Mathieu are consultants with The Malphurs Group, helping churches develop practical strategies for revitalization, discipleship, and leadership. Each week on the Church Revitalization Podcast, they tackle actionable topics to help your church thrive. In this episode: [00:04:03] The "participation trap" — why getting people into groups isn't the same as making disciples [00:09:33] What Acts 2:41-47 tells us about what small groups should actually accomplish [00:14:11] The three things most small groups are missing: clear outcomes, accountability, and connection to the discipleship pathway [00:17:32] How to define your discipleship target and design groups around it [00:19:49] Why small group leaders need a framework, not just curriculum — and why they don't need to be Bible teachers Resources mentioned:
The Real Question Small Group Leaders Should Be Asking: What Kind of Disciple Are You Producing? In this episode of SG Squared, Pastor Steve Gladen and Derek discuss how small group point people can get distracted by urgent tasks and connection metrics while missing the most important question: what kind of disciple the church is trying to produce. Steve explains that every small group model includes a connection process, but the strategy must also include a clear discipleship and spiritual formation pathway that goes beyond slogans and cognitive learning to lived obedience. He argues that the small group point person must seek clarity on the church's discipleship strategy—whether they own it or partner with others—so training, coaching, curriculum, and tools align with the intended outcomes. They unpack the difference between being a “doer” and becoming a “developer,” offering practical ways to share ownership, empower students, and embrace the messiness of growth. If you want to multiply leadership and disciple students beyond yourself, this conversation will help you take the next step.

She earned her bachelor's degree from Ashland University and her master's degree from Cleveland State University.Throughout her career, she has worked in both public and charter school settings in a variety of roles and employment capacities. She has served as a full-time salaried employee and as a part-time hourly employee, gaining experience as a classroom teacher, reading tutor, and a curriculum and special education supervisor. Currently, she works as a part-time hourly intervention specialist in Bay Village.Hartsel genuinely enjoys working with students, and says, like most educators, the most rewarding part of her work is watching students learn, grow, and gain confidence. She was especially drawn to special education because two of her own children had IEPs during their school years. Parenting children with unique learning challenges has had a profound impact on her teaching practice, allowing her to better empathize with both students and their families and to advocate effectively for their needs. In her personal life, Hartsel is the parent of three grown children and the proud grandparent of nine grandchildren. When she is not spending time with her family, she enjoys tending to flowers and plants, both indoors and outdoors. She also likes tackling home improvement projects, from repairing a kitchen sink to painting and refinishing furniture. One of her favorite traditions is creating a custom Volkswagen-themed dresser for each grandchild when they turn five, complete with working tap headlights in their choice of color. Are you tired of treating your faith like a "grind" in an RPG? We often approach spiritual disciplines like we are trying to level up a skill tree: if we just read enough, pray enough, or "do" enough, then we will finally be "good Christians." But what if the point of your faith isn't the destination, but the doorway? In the kickoff of our new series, The Crucible, Pastor Druzi explores the shift from performing spiritual disciplines to experiencing spiritual formation. This is part of our Year of the Forge journey: moving from the "what" of our faith to the "how" of being changed by God's presence. In this video:
Pastor Matt Sturdivant explored John chapter 2, highlighting two key scenes that reveal Jesus' transformative mission. At the wedding in Cana, Jesus turned water into wine, demonstrating that He brings something entirely new rather than just improving what exists. Using the stone purification jars representing the old system, Jesus showed He offers heart transformation, not mere behavior modification. Many believers settle for "water level Christianity" that's safe and shallow, when Jesus offers a "good wine level life" full of joy, power, and Spirit-led living. Significantly, this first miracle happened at an ordinary celebration, showing Jesus cares about every part of our lives - family, work, stress, and even our messes. The second scene, Jesus cleansing the temple, revealed His confrontation with corrupted worship. What was meant to be a house of prayer had become a religious Marketplace exploiting worshipers. Jesus wasn't just cleaning a building but declaring a shift - He Himself would become the meeting place between God and humanity. After the cross, the temple curtain was torn from top to bottom, removing the barrier between God and people. Pastor Matt concluded with four applications: stop settling for water Christianity, invite Jesus into ordinary life, let Him flip tables in corrupted areas, and build life on the risen Jesus rather than religious systems. The extended podcast discussion clarified that John 2 doesn't license indulgence in alcohol or anger, but calls for submitting all freedoms to Christ's lordship.

This week, we dove back into the story of Hosea and Gomer. As a typology, their marriage serves as a living illustration: Gomer represents the wandering church, while Hosea represents a God whose love is relentless. The core message? Sometimes the "bad" things we experience are actually God's surgical mercy, designed to save us from the "good" things that have become idols.Main Scripture: Hosea 2:1–9, Luke 15, Matthew 25:14-30, John 1, Psalm 23 Topic: Bible Teaching, Bible Study, Christian Leadership, Kingdom Builders, Living on a Mission, Use Your Gifts, Serve God, Pray Give Serve, Faith ForwardSupport the show ------------------------------------------WANT MORE?Say You Love Me 1: Building Healthy RelationshipsToxic 1: What are Toxic Thoughts? Guest Author: Paul GregoryHeadline: A Tale of Two Funerals: Burial and DelusionSummary: While the world watched JFK's funeral, a small group buried Lee Harvey Oswald, with reporters serving as pallbearers. The Gregory family's Thanksgiving was overshadowed by the trauma and Margarite Oswald's erratic behavior, as she clashed with agents and insisted on her son's innocence.Article: As the nation mourned President Kennedy, Marina and Margarite struggled to bury Lee in a grim ceremony where reporters had to carry the coffin, with Marina devastated by the contrast between her husband's end and the televised images of the Kennedy family. The Gregory family spent a foggy Thanksgiving recovering from the ordeal, discussing Margarite's delusional assertions that she was being persecuted by the very Secret Service agents trying to protect her, behavior that highlighted the dysfunction she passed down to her son.
