DESCRIPTION As September rolls around, so does the start of the new school year and you may find that some of your students are fleeing the nest to university. Today Neil discusses the emotional wrench of students leaving you, why after years of working together, a strong bond has been formed and why you should always be grateful to have been a part of their journey. KEY TAKEAWAYS An unexpected aspect of teaching guitar and helping students is the emotional wrench of students heading off to university, you may be unprepared for this. As a tutor you will have a caring instinct, you are a part of their development and you want to help shape and mould them. They, in turn, change you. After working together for years, there's an inevitable bond of trust, you are friends with mutual respect. Students become part of your own life story, you learn by teaching. Teachers get the best lessons so your students are also your teachers. So when they go off to uni, it's a massive wrench. They are like your family. Be proud of them even though you will miss working with them. Be overjoyed to see them head off to continue their journey. Wish them well and make sure they know you are still able to work remotely. Many of them will keep in touch when they're still in the area. Reflect on their progress and always be grateful to be a part of their story. You have been a big positive in their lives. Make sure you get a testimonial from them that reflects your impact on their life. BEST MOMENTS “They, in turn, change us unless we are so remote as to not care about them” “ Teachers get the best lessons.” “I'm proud of them.” “ I reflect on their progress and am grateful for being part of their story – I've been a big positive in their lives” VALUABLE RESOURCES Listen to The Tutor Podcast on the Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-tutor-podcast/id1369191372)! Think back to the last time that you had something go TOTALLY differently than you had pictured it in your mind. What were your feelings when things went this way? Were you disappointed? Frustrated? Resentful? Today Neil and I are talking about expectations and why Neil says they're “resentments in the making,” and what we try to do instead to offset these results and find more happiness in life. Time Stamps: [00:29] - Neil and I talk about expectations, resentments, and how our lives unfolded. [03:05] - How can expectations turn into resentment? [05:54] - I explain a saying that can help people to see when something is no longer for them. [08:37] - Sometimes we hold ideas that never come into being. Other times, we need to discern if the idea is aligned with how we are being called. [11:11] - Neil and I share our expectations of marriage versus what we know now. [13:49] - Neil says he thought someone in a relationship would change his faults. [15:34] - I share that I imagined being super unified as a couple, but I realized that we needed a bit of autonomy. [17:04] - Neil and I share our different understandings of a famous image. [19:29] - When we prioritize our individual spiritual health, we are able to show up for each other. [21:24] - Life can be beautiful and blissful, but the reality is that those moments come and go. [23:12] - Why is it so easy to have expectations of others? [25:49] - I talk about removing selfishness to take away the expectations. [27:22] - Neil shares a point about embracing acceptance in our life. [28:51] - I reminisce on what I learned about having expectations of another person's behavior, and being patient in understanding others. [30:36] - Sometimes life is like a trust fall, like a test of our faith. [32:31] - Here is the one expectation people CAN have. Have you ever had a student confess to you that they are just not creative? That they have never been able to create something unique themselves? Today Neil provides you with an exercise to exhort that creativity from each of your students. Encourage your students’ imagination by asking them to imagine what is in the fictitious box, and encourage their creativity to evolve. KEY TAKEAWAYS It is no wonder that governments are such big fans of education. When you impose conformity and suppress new ideas, you have to inevitably kill imagination and murder the idea of play. When the right way to do something is dogmatically enforced and non-compliance is punished, it is no wonder that children shut themselves down to avoid negative consequences. This is what schools do to kids. Time after time students may tell you that they are not the creative type. Encourage your students to make mistakes so that they can get rid of the sounds that they don’t want and the ideas they don’t use. Start them very broad and narrow down their creativity. What’s in the box is a technique that came from Standford University. Ask your student to close their eyes and pretend you are handing them a small box with a lid on it. There is always something in the box. Ask the student to open the box and tell you what is inside? What they find in the box is the preferred subject of a song, story or poem which they have just created out of thin air. They have created the seed of an idea based on the position that there is something in the box at all times. Often they are reluctant to say what is in the box but you can always encourage them. Ask them ‘what colour is it?’ , ‘tell me more about it?’ or ‘where did it come from?’. Soften the questions by telling them that what they are telling you is really interesting to you. The more physical attributes that the student can conjure up such as weight, colour, smell and texture then the more vivid the thing in the box becomes. Your job is to help your students play with the contents of the box and throw ideas backwards and forwards until the student is capable of looking after the process all by themselves. BEST MOMENTS “They weren’t creative, they were compliant.” “That’s not bad for someone who isn’t creative, is it?” “I’ve lost count of the number of students who have discovered something in the box.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Listen to The Tutor Podcast on the Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-tutor-podcast/id1369191372)! Are you fed up with working your current job, but too comfortable to take a leap into something different? Join Neil today as he explains how working absurdly hard on yourself and your business will allow you to create your own normal and live a life most people can’t. Today Neil outlines why being comfortable in life can make you weak, why taking each challenge thrown at you will allow you to grow and why others will envy your new life since you decided to get out of your comfort zone and do what they didn’t. KEY TAKEAWAYS Beware of comfort. Comfort makes you soft, softness makes you weak, weakness makes you vulnerable and being vulnerable makes you a victim. Rather than maintaining a comfortable lifestyle, go for something that challenges you, because a challenge is an opportunity dressed in working clothes. If all you do is take these challenges and overcome them, you will have endless growth. When you leave your comfort zone, you will find out what you are made of. As a business person you have to be prepared to make unpopular decisions, when you begin to work absurdly hard on yourself you will begin to change. Calibrate your normal for what is going to get you where you want to go, and stick with it. Set yourself a normal level of income, for where you are now and then recalibrate it every so often, gradually moving the ratchet upwards and upwards as time goes on. Decide what is normal for you and then go and find yourself a convoy of like-minded people to involve yourself with. Day by day as you exert control over how life goes for you and you begin to work harder and harder you will begin to disregard the negativity. Throughout the time you will grow to trust yourself and develop and learn new things daily. What you have now become will allow you to help people and add something to the world. When you work absurdly hard, you can wind up doing exactly what you want to do each and every day and get very well paid for it. Working hard allows you to build and grow a business and a legacy which will allow you to help a ton of people in achieving what they want in life. You will look at others and see that you can do what they can’t because you did what they wouldn’t. BEST MOMENTS “Make sure the money isn’t driving you. Make sure it is just a byproduct of being successful” “If you never tested to see what you are capable of, how would you ever find out?” “Why try to fit in, when you were born to stand out.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Listen to The Tutor Podcast on the Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-tutor-podcast/id1369191372)! Have you noticed that during the most crazy year that any of us have ever seen in our lifetime, we’re also seeing common courtesy and civility fade, especially in online interactions? Today Neil and I discuss why civility, kindness and respect are SO KEY to making progress and surviving all the challenges we face in this world. We talk about why it’s vital that we pay attention to what we’re saying in front of our kids, and the tone we’re using to express our opinions, putting ourselves in the shoes of others before criticizing, and just offering more grace and kindness to others as we navigate our families through uncharted waters. I love to share about the gospel of Jesus Christ with my online audience, but it wasn't always that way! We talk about why it was so scary at first, how I got over that fear and what led me to a passion for sharing the gospel online. We talk about what topics people are seeking answers for most and how to share in natural and effective ways, why it's a lie that you can't talk about faith at work or school, and how to get help with and get better at sharing your faith with others. Neil Rosen has been an entrepreneur for most of his life. After graduating college he taught elementary school for 10 years prior to starting his first business, a children’s furniture store which he built into a chain of five stores before selling. Next came a public school information business, The School Report, a business started with his wife Roseann that supported the real estate industry by supplying 3rd party public school information realtors could share with potential home buyers. He sold that business to a large media company, stayed on, and it was sold again a year later to an Internet real estate company. Not done yet, Neil and Roseann started eWayDirect, an internet software business that helps consumer businesses build email lists and send emails to prospects and customers. While Neil has retired from running that company (after 20 years), it continues in business today. And if that wasn’t enough, Neil and Roseann have bought and flipped over 30 houses since they have been married.Today Neil is working on a Trivia game and writing children’s books and TV shows. Today Neil talks about being unapologetic and identifying yourself as an entrepreneur. His tutoring business is all about infecting as many people as possible with his love affair with the guitar and making it as much fun for his students and himself as he can. This means he’s working when everyone else is playing and that can be a problem, particularly for personal relationships and achieving a social life or sometimes just a life! Being an entrepreneur is fundamentally different to what most people do and others can find it difficult to understand but what’s the point of doing less of what you love in order to do something you like less? There is great value and important advice for all entrepreneurs in this episode listen in now. KEY TAKEAWAYS Because it’s your business and you are responsible for your own success or failure, you have to put your commitment into your students and your business ahead of any social activity. You can’t be everywhere and do everything, you will have to make choices – and some of the people around you are not going to like your choices. If you work hard in your business and love every minute of it, a lot of the people around you won’t understand, because it’s so far away from how life is for them. It can be really tough to tell your wife, friends or your kids that you can’t do certain things because you’re working. In some circumstances it can cost you a relationship, strain family ties – but you have to do it, because your business shouldn’t take second place. Be discerning and selective about when you say “yes” and make “no” your default answer to anything which pulls you away from your vision, your business and your values. Entrepreneurs are different they are impatient and want things done they are more positive with more alpha behaviours. As an entrepreneur your energy is different, you have a different vibe and are from a different tribe. What matters is spending more time face-to-face with your own tribe: your students, mentees, collaborators and fellow entrepreneurs – the people who get you Take the time to be there for the people in your life who matter, when it matters – be discerning and remember your business has two main functions: To make money for you To allow you to live life on your own terms and manage your own time. BEST MOMENTS ‘Faces tell stories and entrepreneurs have different more positive wrinkles’ ‘Why are people so keen on holidays is it to escape an ordinary life? if you find your passion you won’t need a holiday’ ‘Remember the golden rule - if it’s not fun don’t do it’ ‘Dignity - I have zero tolerance for drunks. Having been one myself, I’m amazed to see people slosh down a load of booze and completely lose their dignity’ ‘That’s why work/life balance is a crock, and why you shouldn’t fall for that loser’s limp. Today Neil and Wayne are talking about one of Neil's crazy inventions: a Pre-Pre-Sale. The majority of club owners will have heard of a Pre-Sale, which is effectively selling memberships to prospects ahead of when a new business is set to open - meaning you've got people using your club as soon as the doors open. A PRE-Pre-Sale is one step further than that! Neil explains why it's useful and why new clubs everywhere should consider it.

Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies
Ready for your agency sales to takeoff? Want to drive traffic, generate leads, and create new opportunities that will grow and scale your agency? Digital marketing agency guru Neil Patel shares his #1 outbound strategy for scoring the clients you want to work with. In this episode, we’ll cover: 3 Steps to growing new agency business. One big growth challenge and advice to overcome it. Neil Patel is a serial entrepreneur focused on helping businesses grow through digital marketing. He is well-known in the digital marketing space as an author, speaker, and agency co-founder at Neil Patel. I’m honored to have him as a guest on the show so he can share his experience as a startup agency owner. Today Neil shares some really valuable tips on getting scrappy so you can scale your agency. Beginning as a self-taught marketer at the age of 16, Neil has become one of the best digital marketing. Like many of us, he’s an accidental agency owner who knew how to do something cool that people are willing to pay for, and turned it into a business. In Neil’s case, he “something cool” is SEO. 3 Steps to Grow New Agency Business #1- Make your hit list. Make a list of your ideal clients and be specific with who you want to work with. Who can you help that is within your niche and area of expertise? Then use a source like Crunchbase to find out the CEO, investors and decision-makers. #2 - Do targeted research. Use industry resources to know what they’re spending on the services you provide. Neil suggested tools such as: Google keyword planner, SEMrush, and his own UberSuggest to research spend amounts. #3 - Reach out. Once you’ve done the research on your prospect, then make contact. Neil says it’s important not to sell services, but instead sell a solution. To do this, explain what they’re doing wrong, what could be done better and how you would fix it. I know it’s hard, but go old school and PICK. UP. THE. PHONE. Cold calling as an outbound strategy can be a total game changer. Advice for Digital Agency Owners “It’s not easy to grow an agency. If you’re willing to do the grind, great. If not, you’re not going to do well.” ~ Neil Patel It’s all about the hard work and the hustle. I always tell agency owners that if you’re building an agency just to create a job for yourself, you’ll struggle the entire time. You’ve got to be passionate about the agency space, the niche you’re in and the clients you’re helping. That’s the only way you’ll succeed and thrive. Neil says his biggest challenge in the beginning was knowing how to scale with a team. He felt the entire hiring and training process was completely trial and error. In hindsight he would advise his old self to hire people who know how to fill their role instead of training up. Need Guidance and Support to Grow Your Agency 3X Faster? The history of humanity as told through one hundred objects from the British Museum in London is back in India. This week Neil MacGregor is with the gods - exploring the sophistication of religious art in the 14th and 15th centuries, as people around the world sought ways of finding physical expression for devotion and for representing the divine. Today Neil is with a magnificent stone sculpture showing the powerful deity Shiva with his consort Parvati seated on his knee - two of the most beloved and familiar figures of Hinduism. The vehicles of the deities, a bull and a lion, and their children sit at their feet, while a host of supporting musicians and attendants swirl around their heads. Neil considers how images like this help cement the relationship between deity and devotee. The writer Karen Armstrong considers the special relationship between male and female aspects in spiritual practice while the Hindu cleric Shaunaka Rishi Das explores the particular characteristics of Shiva and Parvati and considers the religious significance of their union. Producer: Anthony Denselow.
The Director of the British Museum, Neil MacGregor, retells the history of human development from the first stone axe to the credit card using 100 selected objects from the Museum. Today Neil has chosen an object found in France, dating back 13,000 years. It is a carving of two swimming reindeer and it's not just the likeness that is striking. The creator of this carving was one of the first humans to express their world through art. But why did they do it? Neil MacGregor tells the story of the Swimming Reindeer, and its place in the history of art and religion with contributions from the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams and archaelogist Professor Steven Mithen. Producer: Anthony Denselow
