In a rare turn of events, it just so happened that one or perhaps both of your charming co-hosts spewed a bit of nonsense about Derek Parfit in a previous episode, and we had to bring in a heavy hitter to sort us out. Today we're joined by friend of the podcast Mr. Dan Hageman, immuno-oncologist by day and meta-ethicist by night, who gently takes us to task for misunderstanding Parfit and the role of ethical theorizing, and for ignoring the suffering of pigeons. The critiques land, and convince Vaden that we should dedicate our resources towards providing safe and affordable contraception for Apex predators. We cover all sorts of ground in this episode, including: - Mistakes we made in our thought experiments episode - What is the role of meta-ethics? - Is it possible to over-theorize? - Wild animal suffering - Don't fish eat other fish?! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xHMyvtUbhM&ab_channel=moviequotescentral) - Feline family planning - Antinatalism - Moral Cluelessness - Population ethics and the repugnant conclusion (Ha!) - Similarities and differences between theoretical physics and theoretical philosophy References: - Organization for the Prevention of Intense Suffering (https://www.preventsuffering.org/#:~:text=The%20Organisation%20for%20the%20Prevention,suffering%20of%20all%20sentient%20beings.) Dan Hageman is a biomed engineer who works in immuno-oncology, but in his not-so-free time strives to sell himself as an amateur philosopher and aspiring 'Effective Altruist'. He spends much of this time trying to keep up with impactful charities focused on the reduction and/or prevention of extreme suffering, and in 2020 helped co-found a hopefully burgeoning side project called ‘Match for More (https://www.matchformore.org/)'. He would like to note that the IPAs are to blame for any and all errors/misapprehensions made during his lively discussion with epic friends and podcast hosts, Ben and Vaden. How many insect lives are morally equivalent to one human life? Send us your best guess at incrementspodcast@gmail.com. We'll reveal the correct answer in episode 1000. Special Guest: Dan Hageman.
In today’s world, trying to get married has become... a hot mess. So, to all the COVID brides to have been, grooms and wedding professionals: you’re not alone. Welcome to Bride To Have Been, a StudioPod original podcast hosted by Emily Lewis, with the purpose of building a community by sharing the reality of this new normal in the wedding industry. Let’s keep inspiring each other and celebrate the thing we treasure the most: love. From social worker to full time floral designer, Marie Crick was set to have a good year in 2020. But by the time the year was over she had lost half of her weddings. Still, when Bride to Have Been host Emily Lewis sat down with Marie to talk about her experiences navigating the pandemic, her concerns seemed to lie more with her brides. “We all got our fairytale weddings, and they just got screwed,” Crick told Lewis. She also noted that her clients really took her situation into account over the last year, going out of their way to support her and other small businesses. Meanwhile she found ways to pivot her business, focusing on a video series for couples looking to make their own flower arrangements and shifting her energy into individual flower deliveries. Still, as Marie says, it’s been a stay afloat kind of year. Jump straight into: (02:49) - On how Marie got into floral design - “I was working as a social worker with foster kids, and as you can imagine, it was just a little bit of a stressful job. And so I used flowers at the time as a hobby, and they were kind of a healing modality for me.” (04:48) - Trying to become a full time florist - “I was just finding flower shops and trying to apply, and they weren't impressed with my portfolio.” (12:40) - The trouble with Pinterest boards - “Sometimes I get Pinterest boards from brides and I'm like, that's not a real flower and that's not a real flower and that's been painted and that has a humongous filter on it from the photographer. That's not what it'll actually look like.” (17:17) - Marie’s initial response to shelter in place orders - “I had a bride call me in probably April about her September wedding, and I just thought she was goofy.” (24:37) - Feeling empathy for COVID Brides - “I remember my wedding a few years ago and it was so much work just for one wedding that actually did happen the way that I thought it was going to.” (28:55) - A little silver lining - “Some couples are delighted that COVID happened because it's their excuse not to invite aunt Betsy who drives them up the wall.” Resources Follow https://www.instagram.com/laurel.and.vine/?hl=en (Laurel and Vine) on Instagram Learn more about Marie’s https://www.laurelandvine.com/diyweddingfloweracademy (Wedding Flower Academy) Follow wedding photographer https://www.instagram.com/reginakpopova/?hl=en (Regina K. The word evangelical has taken a bit of a beating in recent months, and years. Mark Noll is a leading church historian who recently retired as a Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame, and has served as Professor of History and Theological Studies at Wheaton College, and has also taught at Regent College in Vancouver. Among many other books, Mark Noll wrote 1994's important The Scandal of The Evangelical Mind. His latest book is Evangelicals: Who they Have Been, Are Now, and Could Be (with George Marsden and David Bebbington, Eerdmans, 2019), We reviewed the book in march/April Faith today and we thought it would be cool to have a conversation with Mark Noll about evangelicalism: the movement and the word.

Some people are just attracted to the labels.” (2:43) - Must-haves: Technicalities about your image - “What's most important is making sure that your title pops, you have to be very aware that most people are listening to podcasts on their phones and so it's a small little square image. (04:08) - Photos, titles, and color - “Search for that general topic that the podcast is about, really understand what's already out there, and make sure that from a color standpoint, you have something different than other things that can pop up.” (07:36) - New cover art for each episode or season? - “If you have the bandwidth or you have a team supporting you, then definitely you can lean into that. Most American transit systems were fragile before the pandemic—struggling for revenue, dependent for survival on federal money, inadequate fares, debt, and, in some cases, donations from local businesses. The pandemic has exacerbated these problems and turned existing transit models on their heads. In late December, Gabrielle Gurley, a deputy editor at The American Prospect, wrote an article about how transit systems have responded to the pandemic. “Most operators have mastered the virus precautions, requiring masks, social distancing, and deep-cleaning and disinfecting,” she wrote. “Some have coped better than others, though, in rethinking how to serve passengers who are no longer living in 9-to-5 worlds, and accepting the new realities about how to retain and secure funding at a time when Republican elected officials have blocked any federal response since last spring.” A survey last fall found the majority of transit agencies plan to cut service to close funding gaps. Gurley is our guest on this week’s episode of the Strong Towns podcast. She talks with host Chuck Marohn, founder and president of Strong Towns, about the convulsive effects 2020 had on American transit systems, how the transit experience has changed, and why the politics of transit funding is so challenging. They also discuss the cuts many agencies have planned (or have already implemented), how transit funding reflects what we value as a society, and how the pandemic will change spending priorities from expansion to taking care of basics. As Gurley says, “As nice as it would be to have a spiffy, high-speed train going from DC to New York in two hours…maybe we fix the [leaky] tunnel first.” Additional Show Notes “Public Transportation in Crisis, by Gabrielle Gurley” Other articles by Gabrielle Gurley at The American Prospect Gabrielle Gurley (Twitter) Matthew Yglesias (Twitter) Charles Marohn (Twitter) The Strong Towns Local-Motive Tour Select Strong Towns content on transit: “New York transit is facing "Doomsday" cuts. It may sound hard to believe, but for many of you reading this 2020 was a gift. 2020 was either the best year ever or the worst, and there's no in between. Because 2020 hit us harder than many of us had ever been hit before. And you can't grow without pain. In this video you'll learn my top 5 Strategies to implement in the new year and make new year's resolutions last. 1- Measure your R.O.E over your R.O.I 2- Get CLEAR on what BASE HITS are vs. HOME RUNS. 3- Create a STRONG VISION with a FLEXIBLE PLAN. 4- Get around people who will NOT let you PLAY SMALL. 5- Focus on where you are GOING, not where you HAVE BEEN. The moment you surrender to how things are instead of arguing with reality because you want things to be the way they were, you're going to start appreciating the level you're at right now. When you appreciate where you are, God will open the door to get to the next level. But the hard part is realizing that you already have everything you need. Host Emily Lewis was supposed to get married on September 12, 2020, to her best friend, in front of her tribe of 150 loved ones. Needless to say, the vision she had crafted on Pinterest was upended by the COVID-19 pandemic and shelter in place. In March, she was optimistic that she and her husband were safe, but as time progressed, the realization set in that she had to bob and weave. From 150 to 7, she had an unexpected dream wedding; not everyone has had that same experience. On the Bride to Have Been podcast, Emily will interview fellow COVID Brides about their experiences planning a wedding during a pandemic; the highs, the lows and the pro tips. Additionally, she will connect with wedding planners, wedding photographers, wedding venues and other individuals who have also been impacted. Her goal is to build a community, a #COVIDBrideTribe, to let people know they are not alone and shine a light on this new normal in the wedding industry. Follow and connect with her on social media @bridetohavebeen, to share your stories, suggest topics to touch on or just to show support to the other brides on this journey. Bride to Have Been is brought to you by GiftPod and produced by StudioPod. Edits were made by Nodalab. Special thanks to GaryOAKland for the original track "late night ride". The former united States are now facing the greatest threat in the history of the Republic (and in no small part because so many have been dumbed-down to the point they no longer even know what that means). And it is, of course a global[ist] threat, too. From Psalms 11:3, "When the foundations are [or HAVE BEEN!] destroyed, what can [and SHOULD} the righteous do?"

Many of us sometimes feel confused with verb tenses. We feel unsure on how to apply it in various situations, especially, in conversation. They sound pretty much alike, with only a letter or two in difference, but each of these verb tenses has a different meaning. So it's really important that you know their differences and you know when and how to correctly use them. Today's Verbs: Today we will focus on these three verb combinations: have been has been had been Are you ready? Let's start learning! Using "Has Been" and "Have Been" Both "Has Been" and "Have Been" are under the present perfect tense. They are both used to talk about something that happened in the past, but is either still going on until the present day, or is still true until today. The difference between the two is that "Has Been" is for singular subjects like She, He, It. While "Have Been" is used for plural subjects like they and we. Let me give you some examples: "I have been to Paris and Italy." - This happened in the past but is still a true fact until today. "She's been an English teacher for over 20 years." - This means she started teaching 20 years ago and is still teaching until this day. "We have been part of this team for so long." - The team started in the past and is still together until present. "Chess has always been my favorite board game." - Chess is the singular subject. The speaker started playing chess in the past and continues to play chess today. "Has Been and "Have Been" can also be used as present perfect continuous tense. Similar to present perfect, the action started in the past, and the main difference of this tense is that the action is ongoing in the present day. Example: "I have been going to the same hairstylist since I was a teenager." - Meaning the speaker went to this hairstylist when she was younger and she continues this habit until today. "They have been arguing about that since this morning." - This sentence talks about people who have started their argument in the morning and has continued to argue at the moment. Using "Had Been" "Had Been" can also be used under two verb tenses. The first one is under the past perfect tense. This means that the action happened in the past or before a specific time in the past. For example: "Mary had been a top athlete in her school before her injury." "The two boys had been best friends until they fought over a girl. For the second of the 2 verb tenses it can be used under, "Had Been" can also be used as a past perfect continuous tense. It talks about a continuous action in the past, before another past action occurred. "I had been cleaning the house when I saw the big rat." "Charm had been reading her favorite book when she heard the loud noise from across the street." "The family had been laughing over a funny story when the phone rang." As a summary, remember that “have been” is paired with plural pronouns such as “we, they, you ...” And singular pronouns, “he, she, it” when we use “has been.” "Had been" can be used for both singular and plural subjects but they are used to talk about past actions which happened or which was continuously happening before another past action occurred. He is best known for his advocacy of antinatalism in his book Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into Existence, in which he argues that coming into existence is a serious harm, regardless of the feelings of the existing being once brought into existence, and that, as a consequence, it is always morally wrong to create more sentient beings. He's also the author of books like The Second Sexism: Discrimination Against Men and Boys (2012), and The Human Predicament: A Candid Guide to Life's Biggest Questions (2017). In this episode, we focus on anti-natalism, and its several ramifications. We tackle the asymmetry argument from different angles. We talk about how we are predisposed to evaluate life, and if we can do it objectively. We establish a distinction between a life worth continuing and a life worth starting. And we also go through some specific topics like life for nonhuman animals, abortion, suicide, euthanasia, and environmentalism. Prof. David Benatar joins us to explore the concept of antinatalism, the philosophical idea that procreation is morally bad because of the inevitable suffering that beings will experience as a result of their being brought into existence. We examine David's assertion that "even the best lives, contrary to popular opinion, ultimately contain more bad than good", why the negative aspects of life tend to go unrecognized, whether the scale of immorality for bringing life into the world is culturally dependant, why the testimonials of people who claim to have lead a happy life ought not be to taken at face value, the anti-natalist position on sex and abortion, and whether or not there's anything we can do as a species to make coming into existence worthwhile. *** BOOKS MENTIONED *** "The Human Predicament" https://amzn.to/2NyPgpk "Better Never to Have Been" https://amzn.to/2uPcCQ1 "The Second Sexism" https://amzn.to/2NAJLXB *** BECOME A PATRON *** http://patreon.com/myownworstenemy *** SOCIAL MEDIA *** Facebook: http://facebook.com/myownworstenemyorg Twitter: http://twitter.com/dannydwhittaker *** CREDITS *** Theme Music: Falling Down by Ryan Little http://youtube.com/user/TheR4C2010 Podcast Image: RANT 73 https://flic.kr/p/BBxPX2 DISCLAIMER: My Own Worst Enemy is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.co.uk and affiliated sites.

Episode One Hundred Forty Five: "The Chinese camps, we'll never know, but say 20 million. So 130, 145 million dead. Not all that impressive." This week, we talk about the car accident Chris had on the highway two days prior to recording. Then we move into the regular stuff, like season finale episodes and some movie talk. After that, we discuss what Harold Camping is doing now, why he should be prosecuted and whether or not he and his followers should be considered terrorists. Then we discuss the child whose parents have chosen to remain genderless, Obama following tradition and downing a pint of Guinness. We touch on Limbaugh's ratings and finish out with Chris complimenting a Republican. Seriously. And, it has nothing to do with the blow to the head from the car accident. Here are some link to the stories discussed. Sean Duffy will Eliminate Social Security and Medicare Obama Downs Pint Of Guinness Joe Walsh says Scott Brown Should Be "Ashamed of Himself" Harold Camping's Followers are "Flabbergasted" the World Did Not End Rush Limbaugh's Rating Drop Harold Camping Quick Interview Parents Keep Child's Gender Under Wraps Just when we are all set to go to listener feedback, Chris remembers a story from his local news that he just has to talk about. 57 Minutes: Woman Claims to Have Been to Heaven and Back Be sure to listen to feedback, we have more awesomeness on the line. Although, if I didn't know better, I could swear that Reverend Scott didn't like us very much. Take a listen and you be the judge.
