Meet Neil Mossberg, CEO of Frank151. Frank151 is an independent publisher that speaks to a global audience of culturally acute creators, agitators, and connoisseurs. Today, Neil joins me to discuss his work at Frank151 and what he thinks it takes to be successful within a corporate system. He shares his no-nonsense attitude and shows us the importance of speaking your mind. Are there instances where you might be self-editing and limiting your authentic voice from being heard? When it comes to decision-making, everyone has a shortcut. Neil shares some of the shortcuts he has made and how self-reflection has helped him make those decisions in some instances. Finally, Neil encourages us to consider this question, "What is worth reviving?" It might be time to reconsider some of the things that have been holding you back or keeping you stuck. Frank151 is a pocket-sized book magazine that started in the 90s in ATL then and now is still filled with unvarnished "dope stuff" from various cultures, including that of skateboarding to hip hop. Neil personally has an affinity for all things Brooklyn, loves bacon, and camouflage Neil has been accused of having affairs with two celebrities and once drove eight hours for a burger, to this day Neil will only acknowledge the burger. Neil's background is varied; he has been in charge of business development for his family's company, World Marketing, since 2000. Neil initially started his career in the fashion world in 1992 as a leading analyst of global trends and merchandising strategies for the retail and fashion industry. Early in his career, Neil worked for and left Urban Outfitters to become the creative director of the national retailer County Seat. There he successfully managed all brand acquisition, product planning, and marketing for County Seat'sSeat's 600 stores nationwide, generating sales above $500 million. As a consultant and brand specialist, Neil worked to launch the hugely successful Alloy catalog has consulted for companies such as the Limited corp., RJ Reynolds, and several of NY's larger nightlife corps. His clients include Steve Harvey, Alexander Rossi, Defend Brooklyn, Exclone ( an AI company ), and most recently became CEO of Frank151. This combination of Neil's achievements led DNR, the leading authority for comprehensive coverage and trends in the worlds of men's fashion and retail, to name Neil as a "fashion young gun." Impact magazine also recognized Neil as one of this century's' "power players" in the fashion and marketing world. Neil continues to partner and consult with media and celebrity-rooted entities who seek to monetize their exposure and reach. Self-described as "corporate street," he enjoys his fresh perspective on fashion, celebrities, and immense respect for essential workers. Tune in to hear Neil's thoughts pertaining to: Goldberg, the wrestler, is brilliant… he was sincere, and understood the dynamics of the market and shared common values. (4:16) His admiration for the world order as well as essential workers and how it's sometimes flipped upside down. (5:10) Understanding social dynamics, the jobs of essential workers, and his appreciation for all industries, as well as his upbringing in an immigrant family. (6:25) The notion that you can lose in thirty minutes what you spent thirty years to build. (7:47) Neil's start at Frank151, why he decided to make a move and his "corporate street," attitude. (9:43) Neil's approach to meetings and personal philosophy about being a straight shooter. (14:00) What it is like working for Frank151 and what's so fun about it. (15:34) Why Neil thinks it is better to be the kingmaker than the king. (16:55) Neil explains why there is a disconnect between corporate and culture. (17:45) There are risks and benefits of not walking the corporate walk. (19:16) Being nimble and having an efficient system is an advantage during these tumultuous times. (21:57) Frank151 in print and how Neil imagines continuing production in the current economic and pandemic environment. (23:52) What decision-making shortcuts Neil and Frank151 have made, and having the courage to ask, "Am I emotionally invested in it?" And being able to walk away from a project if you need to do so. (27:29) The role of AI in fashion. (33:26) How Neil gets through a crappy day. He also reflects on failures and the scars he holds from his failures. (36:52) Listen to hear Neil's answer to this crucial question: How do you think about hiring the right talent to address business challenges necessary to resolve? This is a show about parenting, featuring not only one of my all-time favorite authors but also one of the best parents I’ve ever watched in action. When he wants to learn about, or write about something meaningful to him, he becomes quite literally obsessed, and at this stage in his life, it’s all about becoming the best father he can possibly be. Neil Strauss’s books are not only educational, hilarious, emotionally touching, but also quite addictive. Over the many years I’ve been reading them, they’ve made me laugh, cry, and change my life for the better – and no matter what he writes about, I can’t put his books down until I’ve greedily inhaled every single word. Neil co-wrote some of the best biographies of our time, but he’s best known for The Game, which follows his journey infiltrating the pickup artist subculture and learning how to be one. This segued into teaching other guys pickup artistry, which had its ups and its downs, ultimately culminating in a sequel of sorts called The Truth: An Uncomfortable Book About Relationships. At the time, The Truth seemed like a conclusive end to Neil’s hero’s journey, in which he lost his love and then won it back. But now, a few years later, we can see that the story isn’t over. Our complex relationships with relationships can’t be neatly wrapped up in a Campbellian journey, and this is a truth that I think we all come to realize eventually. So today, Neil shares what this next step of his journey looks like: the end of a marriage, the beginning of a non-romantic relationship with the mother of his child, the new paradigm of conscious parenting, and dating while he navigates the complexities of it all. Since Neil has yet to write a book on parenting, I was thrilled to be able to sit down and have him share all he has learned so far about being the best dad he can be. Topics Discussed In This Episode: Why the key to changing the world is healthy parenting Maintaining a great relationship with the other parent of your child, even when the romantic relationships ends A big myth about relationships Why “staying together for the kids” is a backwards plan that doesn’t produce healthy, loving role models Developing a mature relationship with monogamy How The Truth changed Luke’s life A sure way to kill any romantic relationship: turning your partner into a parent The mistakes that most parents make – and the ones that we can avoid The moment Neil learned that he was going to have a kid (also the first time he ever hoped a pregnancy test would come back positive) The books and experts that have taught Neil the most about parenting Why Neil keeps a diary for his son How a parent can create boundaries and not get enmeshed with their child, while still being loving and intimate with them You’re not always going to be your kid’s friend – and that’s okay! How to avoid teaching your children to medicate their emotions The Continuum Concept & parenting The roles that people take on in dysfunctional families Why conscious parenting is the most important thing you can do in your life Neil’s new podcast, To Live and Die in LA, about the disappearance of aspiring actress Adea Shabani More about this episode. This week on The PRmoment podcast I’m catching up with Neil Hedges, founder and partner at communications firm Headland. Neil has worked in the UK PR scene for nearly 40 years – so he knows his way around. Before setting up Headland, Neil was one of the founders of Fishburn Hedges – arguably UK PR’s pre-eminent PR shop of the 1990s and most of the noughties. Here is a taster of what Neil and I discussed: How Neil started his career in advertising and decided to move to public relations 0.46 Why PR’s current need for planners is history repeating itself 3.15 Why his time at time at Valin Pollen had a big influence on the rest of his career 4.15 Why a consultancy business is always likely to have very busy periods and some fallow ones 6.45 Why did Neil leave Valin Pollen? 7.20 Why Neil has never bought a business 9.20 How did the genesis of Fishburn Hedges come about? 10.10 Why there was a lot of mediocrity in PR firms in the 1990s 10.40 Why Fishburn was trying to build a business across corporate, financial and public affairs 11.20 Was Fishburn's growth uniform, or did it come in fits and starts? 12 mins Does Neil regret selling Fishburn to Abbott Mead Vickers, which was part owned Omnicom in 1996? 14.50 What was it like shifting from a privately owned business to a publicly owned business? 18.40 What was it like trying to run a publicly owned PR firm in 2008/09? 19.16 and 22 mins Why the response to the financial crisis shook his faith in America 20.15 Fishburn Hedges was the corporate PR shop in London throughout the 1990s and most of the noughties that most of its rival firms attempted to imitate. But in the end, its run of revenue growth came to a sharp halt. Neil tells us why 25 mins How agencies have their periods of ascendancy and tend to plateau 25.40 Neil tells us why he decided to try and do it all again and launch Headland 28.20 and 31.10 Why very few publicly owned PR firms have a financial PR offer 30.05 Why Neil chose a partnership model for Headland 32.15 Why Neil has ambitions for Headland’s partnership to last many generations 33.40 Why Neil’s long-term business relationship with Dan Mines has lasted so long 38.30 Why PR businesses, in the end, suffer if they are managed by practitioners 40 mins How Headland has grown so rapidly in the last three years 42.15 Why Headland runs a graduate scheme 48.15

He is a contributing editor at Rolling Stone and also writes regularly for The New York Times. But Neil's interests go far beyond "seduction". For example, in his book , he spent three years surviving amongst survivalists, tax-dodgers, billionaire businessmen, and the government itself, and the book was hailed by Rolling Stone as an "escape plan" for the current world crisis. When I visited Neil's home in Malibu to record this interview, I found myself immersed with Neil in everything from advanced virtual reality game playing, crazy underwater pool workouts, surfing with internet celebrities and drinking "billion-dollar smoothies", all of which you'll hear about in this podcast recorded from Neil's kitchen. [37:17] * How Neil retains his positive attitude in the face of depressing news…and a good summary of the election (courtesy of Elon Musk.)
