Is there anything, or anyONE, in your life that is making your life feel out of control? Are there worries keeping you up at night or stealing joy and happiness from the things you would like to be able to focus on or be more present with, but that worry in the back of your mind is just kind of always there, camped out, keeping you distracted or distraught? Today’s episode is just for you!  We are going to teach you some life-changing concepts and guiding principles that have helped both Neil in his addiction and me in my journey with codependency. We’re going to help you – or anyone else who has worries and stresses as we all do – to identify what’s ours to control and when to let go. From that deep codependency that I lived in for so many years, I have hit rock bottom. And maybe that’s just what I needed so I could really feel that depth of despair and finally decide to not become a slave to my choices.  At the end of the day, the best way to live is to live in control of yourself, and not of other people. Do what you know is best and that will bring you happiness and joy.  In this episode, you will hear: The Serenity Prayer: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference." It all comes down to trusting God and accepting that there is a higher purpose, higher plan, and an eternal perspective with whatever it is that's happening around us. There are all these different lies in addiction so the wisdom to know the difference, or to see the self-deception, to see the truth from error, or to see when you're lying to yourself is totally key and it takes time. Having that connection with God through the Spirit can help you differentiate and have the wisdom to know the difference between truth and error – right and wrong. The concept of touching your nose is to remind yourself that you are only in charge of yourself, and not of other people. Worrying doesn’t help solve your problems. Whenever you attach to someone or something, you lose control. And you forfeit your ability to think, feel, act, and take care of yourself. How Neil became codependent his own way and how it built a lot of frustration and resentment which led to him acting out more on his addiction How my happiness was so tied up in Neil's happiness and how working my own 12-step program has helped me to surrender things out of my control Surrender or detachment is not a one-time event. It's an everyday decision, an art, and a way of life.   "You need to detach most when it seems like the least likely or possible thing to do." – the COVID situation is the best example of this.   The 12-step is a step-by-step program. Whatever step you're on, don't look beyond that step. And you have to be willing to do each step. When we attempt to control people and things that we have no business controlling, we are controlled. In this episode of the Hacker Valley Studio podcast, hosts Ron and Chris interview Neil Bearden, storytelling expert and founder of The Story School and Plot Wolf Ltd. Neil originally started his career by teaching statistics and behavioral economics but had an astonishing introduction to storytelling by a stranger in San Francisco.The episode begins by Neil sharing that he began his career in academia by completing a PhD in psychology which led to him teaching statistics, behavioral economics and behavioral decision-making. At some point, Neil found that he had a passion for storytelling and started the first MBA course at our INSEAD university on storytelling called storytelling workshop. Teaching storytelling at university helped Neil discover that the storytelling market is the entire world! Which ultimately led to his recognition and founding companies that help individuals tell their greatest stories. While completing his postdoctoral studies at Duke University in 2005, Neil attended a neuroscience conference in San Francisco where he decided to go for a walk and ran into a stranger that asked him, “Would you like to hear some poetry young man?”. After Neil agreed, the man said:“They’re latent semantics embedded deep down inside these rambles; these aren't the ravings of a madman alone, the dark with candles. These are my notes, the underground they were sent to me from the year 2012Dusky as he said to a beat these lyrics, they were pinned in a prison cellCaught up with a knife, sent to the compression of vacuum tubes that articulate expressions Are readily answered with a question. A rhythm that's progressingIt keeps the head nodding like you agreeing with the lessonYour freedom, It's called the question - Free will. That's obsolescent. It's a myth from long ago. It's no longer relevant to the present. So you must obey then all your thoughts young man, you must replace them with this prism. You’re plugged into the system. You too are now in prison. In the matrix of your mind known as walls, ancient wisdom in a system of symbols, encrypted and deeply hidden In the depths of your unconscious as if it were forbidden from outside awareness, by the id who does its bidding”The man introduced himself as Osiris, a poet. For several hours, Neil and Osiris shared life experiences together while Osiris recited poems at his own accord throughout the night. After departing, Neil never had the opportunity to meet Osiris again but did attempt to track him down years later with no luck.After the introduction to Osiris, Neil made a commitment that he’d begin writing poetry and cultivate the courage to share his stories publicly. Neil learned that he could halt beer bottles from clinking, discussions happening, and have listeners lean in while telling a great story. This compelled Neil to pivot from teaching statistics at university to teaching storytelling. After teaching storytelling for many years, Neil realized that he wanted to make a bigger impact and become an entrepreneur and teach storytelling to anyone who needs it.Today, Neil helps companies and individuals add spice to their stories by extracting the details of a story that helps listeners internalize and visualize the nutrient rich details of a story. Neil is often humbled by the fact that he was able to pivot to a psychology PhD to storyteller organically and is able to help so many through having conversations. As the podcast progresses, Neil highlights the difference between a story and a “crappy little speech”. While telling a story, the presenter needs to invoke a visual experience for the audience and provide a mental movie. Providing description of looks, taste, and feel helps build a mental model for the audience when being told a story. This episode has been 28 years in the making and an opportunity to dig into what leadership really means in today’s complex and demanding environment. As fresh-faced Officer Cadets, Neil Jurd and I embarked on a lifelong journey of discovery and passion for leadership which we discuss in this episode; one of my favourites so far! A mix of military anecdote and contemporary thinking on leadership in the modern age, this episode is more than just two old chums having a catch up. Neil explains how his ideas and thoughts on leadership have been forged, honed and challenged by his experiences on operations and latterly as a coach and consultant to the public and private sectors. Leadership is a simple concept, but often poorly executed and it is Neil’s passion to spread best practice that has driven him to write his first book on the subject and in the hope that more people see leadership as a force for good, rather than self-interest. “Leadership. If you know your purpose and are good to people, others will follow and want to be led by you. There needs to be an alignment of where you are going and what you are trying to achieve. You need to throw yourself into what you believe in because that passion will bring an excitement to the work. The passion will be more compelling, and people will be more connected to the work.In politics, you rarely see leadership being for the greater good. You often see selfishness, dominance, and manipulate in politics to be in charge. These styles of leadership will have an impact because people often mimic what they see. If they only see a toxic leader, they will be encouraged to act the same. Instead, you should try breaking the cycle and providing a leadership style that is for the greater good.The standard you walk past is the standard you accept. These deep moral values can shape you as a leader and this type of thinking can reveal what you accept in your moral values. It was all about how to react when things go wrong and taking time to think.Leadership is really just about understanding, revisiting, and applying the basics. It does not require a mastery or a strategic knowledge. Instead, it just about doing the basic things beautifully and wonderfully. You constantly revisit and relearn until you are a master of the basics. Leadership is not about higher knowledge, but instead digging deeper into the basic fundamentals to understand the core of it. Treat people well and know the basics; and repeat! Meet Neil Mossberg, CEO of Frank151. Frank151 is an independent publisher that speaks to a global audience of culturally acute creators, agitators, and connoisseurs. A number of years ago his first wife left him and his best friend committed suicide. To cope with his grief, he decided to start a blog called 1000 Awesome Things to cheer himself up, which focused on life’s simple pleasures. This week, in the latest of our life stories podcast, I’m interviewing Neil Henderson, group director of global media and financial communications at Zurich Insurance Group.Neil is based in Switzerland.Previously, he has was head of media, content and partnerships at Which?, director of communications at Mastercard, executive director at Golin and head of media and broadcast at Red.Before this, he was a journalist with Sky, ITN and the BBC.[00:01:03] How Neil has managed his career so that he has been able to work in a broad range of sectors rather than specialise in one. [00:01:58] How for Neil, as a journalist turned PR guy, his career has always been "a bit like working a newsroom". [00:07:01] Why Neil wishes he'd stayed at Red and Golin longer than he did. [00:08:17] Whether PR people still under-prioritise the broadcast media. [00:12:38] How one of Neil's clients wanted him to get a urinal story on the Today programme. Neil and I originally connected over Twitter a few years ago as members of a startup incubator alumni network. While Neil was an undergrad, he started a company called “College Zen” to help prospective students get matched up with current students to get a real feel for the school. That startup didn’t work out, but the people he met and the experience he got from it turned into his next few roles, including his most recent work, as an “innovation consultant” for Estee Lauder. I wanted to talk to Neil for a few reasons: He’s had an extremely varied career during and after college, from starting that first company, to leading growth at another, to doing this innovation consulting, and now starting a beer company of all things. He is one of the more well read people I know, and draws deeply from history, philosophy, and science in his discussions. These can lead to really wide ranging discussions on anything when we talk, and our catch ups tend to run about as long as this interview. And he’s also great at testing ideas while maintaining safe alternatives. He was able to try out a number of startup ideas while doing his consulting work, giving him the best of both worlds. A steady income he could rely on, but also the flexible hours he needed to test startup ideas. Now that one’s working, he’s able to leave with much more security than he would if he were jumping in blind.
