On this episode of This Week in Moab, we meet political consultants Gabi Finlayson and Jack Morgan of Elevate Strategies, (https://www.elevatecampaignstrategies.com/) whose explainer videos on tiktok and instagram (@elevate_utah on IG) are providing a new level of political education and inspiring an increase in multigenerational engagement in Utah politics. We discuss their work to recruit and run candidates, foster more competitive races, and the possibility of Utah becoming a swing state. We also get details on Canyon Country Community Action Network's event in Moab to honor the legacy of Rep. John Lewis.
Days after U.S. Senator Thom Tillis announced he will not run for reelection, host Tim Boyum sits down with two of North Carolina's top consultants to talk about what's next. Morgan Jackson, a top Democratic strategist for former Gov. Roy Cooper, and Jonathan Felts, a top Republican strategist for current U.S. Senator Ted Budd, join Tim to talk about Tillis' decision, potential candidates and the role of President Donald Trump. Before his announcement, Tillis weighed Trump's influence and Senate GOP support, said a person who was granted anonymity to discuss internal dynamics. Tillis saw the GOP pushing forward with Medicaid cuts and Trump's Truth social posts calling for a new primary challenger as a “no.” Jackson said the data shows though, that Tillis was one of the weakest incumbents in the country — Republican or Democrat. “I think, if you are in a place where swing voters view the way they do Thom Tillis, meaning upside-down in the numbers, and you're now in open warfare with the person who determines whether or not you're going to win your primary, it makes total sense. There was not a path forward,” Morgan said. “In a Primary or General.” Democrats now see his decision as a political opportunity to gain seats in the 2026 midterm elections, especially in the now open Senate race of this long-contested state, and some Republicans are mulling the idea as well. And though Tim says he usually doesn't focus on the “who's in, who's out,” he does admit there are some big potential names who could enter the race this summer. Lara Trump, a big name in the hat, was born in Wilmington, but has established residency in Florida. President Trump recently said she'd be his top pick. “She's a great person, Lara Trump. I mean, that would always be my first choice,” he said. “But she doesn't live there now, but she's there all the time. Her parents are there, you know. She really knows North Carolina well.” “I think we have a lot of good candidates if we're looking at it. I think if Lara Trump wants the nomination, it's hers for the taking,” Felts said. “She connects well with the voters here in North Carolina. They see her as one of us. They see her as a ‘hometown girl.'” On the Democrat ticket, Tim asked Jackson whether there's national pressure that the party needs former Gov. Roy Cooper to step up and be the ‘savior'. “It's easy to do the math and say there's no question Roy Cooper gives the best chance to win if you're lay Democrat, a reporter, or an activist,” Jackson said. “They're giving him space to make that decision, but yeah, they really want him to run.” Join Tim for this fun, informative and news breaking discussion.

Send us a textIn this special edition we honor two very different but very special people, Stuart Spencer and Bob Ueker. Stuart Spencer was an advisor to Ronald Reagan going back to his earliest days in politics. He helped guide Reagan to the California Governor's Mansion and then on to the White House. In the time between, he also ended up working with President Gerald Ford to fend off a challenge from Reagan in 1976, and helped Ford almost win reelection only losing by a point to former Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter. Spencer would go on to be a major advisor to Reagan throughout the rest of Reagan's career and he established political consulting as a viable profession. He passed away in January at age 97. Bob Ueker, was known far and wide as Mr. Baseball. He was the broadcaster for decades for the Milwaukee Brewers and the star of TV commercials for Miller Lite Beer and the TV show "Mr. Belvedere". Bob Ueker was famous for his ability to make people laugh and was a regular guest on "The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson", we try to share some of that with you in this episode . Bob Ueker passed away in January he was 90 years old. This is an episode honoring two very different people but both of whom were great at what they did. On this week's podcast, Democratic consultant Morgan Jackson and Republican consultant Jonathan Felts provide insights on a politically eventful month in North Carolina. The two touch on topics like the impact of Biden dropping out of the race from the perspective of both sides, why Gov. Roy Cooper took his name out of the VP running before the vetting even began. The panel also uses their career expertise to hypothesise how President Joe Biden's Press Secretary Andrew Bate, a North Carolina native, might've immediately reacted when he discovered the president dropped out of the race.

Independent Political Strategist Bill Hillsman has masterminded some of the most effective and innovative election campaigns in the modern era. Hillsman first rocked the political world when he helped elect the late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone in 1990 in one of the biggest political upsets in decades. In 1993, Hillsman took over a floundering Minneapolis mayoral campaign four weeks before election day, resulting in Sharon Sayles-Belton's election as the first African-American and the first woman mayor of Minneapolis, a city comprised of 85 percent white voters. He later shocked the world by helping Jesse “The Body” Ventura become Governor of Minnesota in 1998. When he joined independent candidate Ralph Nader during the 2000 election, his inventive campaign, created on a tiny budget, had the whole country talking and rethinking how we sell our politicians. He worked on independent campaigns for Arianna Huffington for Governor of California in 2003 and Kinky Friedman for Governor in Texas in 2006. And he created the groundbreaking and award-winning “Not There” television ad for Operation Truth (later Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America) featuring Iraq veteran and amputee, Robert Acosta. Bill's innovative creative work has brought him a host of awards, including a Grand EFFIE for the Wellstone campaign. Both USA Today and Business Week named his Wellstone commercials the best political ads of 1990 and his Ventura commercials were honored with five POLLIE Awards from the American Association of Political Consultants. A master of effective TV Ads, marketing and branding, Bill is CEO of North Woods Advertising and has been working in independent politics for a generation–and understands independents better than anyone in America. And for decades, Bill has been a man on a mission to change our political system. His book Run The Other Way is an eye-opening look at the political landscape with a cast of characters that includes Colin Powell, Ross Perot, Donald Trump, Kinky Friedman and Warren Beatty. And with independents in the driver's seat to determine the 2024 Presidential election (and the future of our country) Bill is a wise and experienced leader we all need to hear from. He joins our host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) in this latest episode to share what can be learned from Ventura's campaign 25 years later, how he defines an independent voter, how he sees them defining themselves, and gives an assessment of the entire independent movement landscape ranging from No Labels and Forward to Robert F Kennedy Jr and Cornel West. And Paul asks Bill who he thinks will win the election—and they talk a little baseball and more. No other show is digging into all things independent politics like we are. Every episode of Independent Americans hosted by author, activist and social entrepreneur Paul Rieckhoff is the truth beyond the headlines–and light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. A seemingly drunk Marjorie Taylor Greene was having a good time at Trump's New Hampshire victory party this week, and she wanted to make sure that everyone knew it. She managed to get herself interviewed by a right wing network where she said, while slurring her words horribly, that political consultants for people like Nikki Haley should go to jail for working for a losing candidate. The woman is even more unhinged after she's had a few. Also, Donald Trump has won the first two Republican contests by fairly decent margins, and now the apparatus of the Republican Party is calling for everyone to unify behind him. But looks can be deceiving, and the real numbers from Trump's victories show that he has little to no path to victory in a general election. Moderate Republicans and Independents want nothing to do with him, and he can't win with only the MAGA coalition behind him.And a former Trump staffer that had previously served as a director for his New Hampshire campaign in a previous election was forcibly removed from Trump's victory party in New Hampshire after he posted a picture of himself with a smiling Alina Habba. Habba's presence has called into question her honesty and integrity, as she told the judge the day before that she was sick and the trial was then postponed. The former staffer was removed after posting the picture but right before the news broke on NBC.Finally, Donald Trump is tired of the primaries, and he's ready to be crowned the king of the GOP. The only thing standing in his way is his last remaining opponent, Nikki Haley. So Trump is now going scorched earth against Haley and all who support her, and in a post on Truth Social Trump threatened to expel and ex-communicate any Republican who gives money to Nikki Haley going forward. That's a rather empty threat, and it shows that Trump is trying to bully his way to the top.Subscribe to our YouTube channel to stay up to date on all of Farron's content: https://www.youtube.com/FarronBalancedFollow Farron on social media!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FarronBalanced/Twitter: https://twitter.com/farronbalancedInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/farronbalancedTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@farronbalanced?lang=en
