The Toronto Blue Jays are just one win away from a World Series victory as they prepare to take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6; Ontario's SIU is called in after a Toronto police officer fires his gun during a carjacking investigation in Mississauga; and, the Ford government's legislation banning municipalities from installing speed cameras passes.

In this week's Akem's Analysis, I talk about some of the biggest games that happened in FCS football this weekend. To start, we look at the big-time win that Sacramento State had at home against the Northern Colorado Bears. Both teams were 3-3 going into the game, and the winner now has a chance to become a playoff team with the right luck. We also look at 2 games in the MVFC, UND vs SIU, and Illinois State vs YSU. Both games had big performances, but none bigger than Beau Brundgard, who is looking like a serious Walter Payton candidate. He absolutely put the team on his back. At the end, I get into some No Huddle Notes, and in that segment, I start by giving my thoughts on the comments of Sac State's president, Dr. Luke Wood. An estimated half a billion rands worth of damages have been caused to the historic Fort Hare University following violent protests and arson. In his latest BizNews interview, Grant Abbott, the General Secretary of the National Tertiary Education Union, tells Chris Steyn why Fort Hare cannot be rebuilt with VC Professor Sakhela Buhlungu still in place. “It is clear not just from right now, but for five, six, seven years of this VC's tenure that there is gross irregularities and corruption going on. As in very recent, right in the middle of all of the corruption, he appoints someone who is implicated in the SIU report as being possibly corrupt…He has a history of surrounding himself, unfortunately, with dodgy characters. And we know that by the fact that all of the 24, 25 people who stand accused at the moment were all appointed while he was the Vice Chancellor…" Abbott adds that the VC's management style is to "hold all stakeholders at arm's length and not to engage..He runs the university like it's his own private company. He thinks it's his own spaza shop, whatever it is, and he can do what he wants.”

Lester Kiewit questioned what goes on in the minds of those who steal from the state and then flaunt their wealth so brazenly. Reflecting on the SIU’s raid at the Sandhurst home of businessman Hangwani Maumela, linked to the Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal, he explained how investigators trace assets back to stolen public money and move to recover them for the state. But what fascinated him most was the psychology behind it. Reports of Maumela’s mansion detailed luxury cars, including a Lamborghini Aventador, designer furniture, and expensive art. Lester asked why someone who knows their money is dirty would live so loudly. Why flaunt ill-gotten wealth instead of keeping a low profile? What does that reveal about power, guilt, or greed? He connected this to the legacy of whistleblower Babita Deokaran, whose courage exposed corruption at Tembisa Hospital and cost her life. Her family has rejected proposals to rename the hospital after her, saying they want justice, not gestures. Lester broadened the reflection to the names of South Africa’s failing municipalities that honour struggle heroes. He asked what those names now mean to young people growing up in broken communities — places where the names of Chris Hani or Walter Sisulu are no longer symbols of pride, but of dysfunction. If it were his family, Lester said, he would rather see their name removed until justice and integrity are restored.
