Burger wanted to try making a film with an experimental style with no rehearsals, makeup, or camera checks beforehand, which could benefit the globe-trotting paranoia thriller. Burger and one of the film's stars, Rhys Ifans, were both kind enough to spend some time talking with us about their work on the film, which you can watch or listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from IFC Films. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Episode 469"Sugar"Cinematographer: Richard Rutkowski. An active cinematographer whose work encompasses indie features, documentary, commercials, and major streaming productions, Richard is based in New York and also works extensively overseas. His photography on the first seasons of FX's Cold War spy drama The Americans drew widespread critical acclaim. Likewise his camerawork on the wartime drama Manhattan, set in Los Alamos during the top secret creation of the atom bomb, earned glowing mentions and two ASC Award Nominations for Best Cinematography. Recent projects include Apple's Sugar, starring Colin Farrell and James Cromwell, and the WW II epic Masters of the Air, produced by Gary Goetzman, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. Additional credits include the pilot and three seasons of Amazon's international action hit Jack Ryan, USA Network's surrealist drama Falling Water, produced by Gale Ann Hurd, and Hulu's Castle Rock for producers Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason. Most recently Richard filmed the pilot block of The Hunting Wives, a new series produced by Lionsgate for the Starz Network.Growing up in Provincetown, Massachusetts; Fort Smith, Arkansas; and Water Mill, New York - disparate locations that traced the career of his late father, landscape painter Casimir Rutkowski - Richard developed an appreciation of context, diversity, and the examined details of individual environments. His early ambition was to become an architect. While attending Harvard College, Richard began making 16mm short films mixing live action, stop animation, and electronic sound composition. One such project was Sunshine Superman, created with the artist Christopher Knowles and screened in festivals and in art gallery exhibition ever since. While working as first assistant to extraordinary cinematographers such as Ed Lachman ASC; Eric Edwards; David Stockton ASC; and the late Freddie Francis BSC, Rutkowski continued lensing short films and indie features for emerging directors. After earning a Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance for Kevin Asher Green's minimalist mini-DV film Homework, Rutkowski shot director Neil Burger's debut feature, Interview with the Assassin, nominated for Independent Spirit Awards in Best First Feature and Best Cinematography categories.Working with a legendary mentor, theater maestro Robert Wilson, over 20 years led to Richard filming the artist's initial HD Video Portraits. Meticulously staged, slow-moving images of Mikhail Baryshnikov, Winona Ryder, Brad Pitt, Steve Buscemi, and Robert Downey Jr. sparked a growing collection that has been exhibited internationally ever since. Over a three year period Rutkowski produced, shot and directed The Space in Back of You in homage to Japanese dancer Suzushi Hanayagi, a mesmerizing, eclectic talent whose approach to stage movement deeply influenced Wilson and other avant-guard luminaries. This film premiered at New York's Lincoln Center and has screened on Arte Channel, the Baryshnikov Center for Dance, and at the Pompidou Center in Paris. Filming groups of workers and individual laborers in painterly long takes, Richard collaborated with artist Sharon Lockhart on Double Tide, Lunchbreak and Exit, projects since screened at MoMA in New York, LA's Hammer Museum and other major gallery and museum installations over the last twelve years.https://linktr.ee/mondaymorningcritic

After much live on-air jiggering and juggling due to studio technical issues, BEHIND THE LENS came together with our wonderful guests AARON MURTAGH talking about his short film MAN BABY and editor NICK PEZZOLLI discussing his two new films BUTCHER'S CROSSING and YOUR LUCKY DAY. And because of the studio technical issues, you also get my exclusive interview with director NEIL BURGER talking about his latest, THE MARSH KING'S DAUGHTER. We kick off the show with my exclusive interview with director NEIL BURGER talking about his new film THE MARSH KING'S DAUGHTER. A rich slow-burn starring Daisy Ridley and an award-worthy turn by Ben Mendelsohn. Next up is filmmaker AARON MURTAGH talking about his new short film MAN BABY. Wearing multiple hats as actor, writer, director (his first directorial effort), and producer, Aaron's approach to the short and most notably the story is a personal one that utilizes the Covid-19 lockdown and the birth of his first child to create this unique – and slightly creepy – tale. Then editor NICK PEZZILLO joins us live to discuss his two new projects – BUTCHER'S CROSSING and YOUR LUCKY DAY. Talk about films as different as night and day! And yet, Nick proves himself to be en editorial storyteller with each film. Breaking out the two films Nick talks about the challenges of each, be it the panoramic landscapes and logistics and natural lighting of BUTCHER'S CROSSING or the limited, controlled – and often claustrophobic – convenience store location of YOUR LUCKY DAY. A wonderful editor and storyteller and a really fun, nice guy, listen this interview, see these two films, and put NICK PEZZILLO on your radar. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
There was some excitement in the Spoilerpiece camp this week, as Dave and Megan noticed THE MARSH KING'S DAUGHTER (2:41) was coming out. A mid-budge thriller with a stacked cast? Yay! Directed by Neil Burger? Um, judgment reserved. Until now. A question Megan asks: Do directors know what to do with Daisy Ridley? And we didn't ask this at the time, but does Neil Burger know what to do with...anything? Such shade cast at the Spoilerpiece HQ! After that, it's QUIZ LADY (27:07), starring Awkwafina, Sandra Oh, and Will Ferrell. It was more fun. And we hope YOU have fun listening! Don't forget to check out Patreon, where we talk about the 1953 classic ROMAN HOLIDAY with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.
Happy November! Let's kick off the month right with the one and only Neil Burger. His new film, The Marsh King's Daughter is out this Friday, November 3rd. But we are also talking about this week's Overdue Rental, his 2011 sleeper hit, Limitless. The Bradley Cooper/Robert DeNiro thriller was such a smash hit when it hit theaters and though it spawned a TV show of the same name, not enough people are talking about the film nowadays. Let's fix that! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/overduerentals/support

All she has to do is realize that she's the place that people are trying to get to.” - Taken from https://heroinejourneys.com/heroines-journey/ The Verbivore referenced the Fairytale Heroine's journey that has different beats to it. Here is some information of that:https://theodoragoss.com/2017/04/03/mapping-the-fairy-tale-heroines-journey/ Fable referenced the Maiden's journey and the Virgin's promise story arcs. Here is some information no those:The Maiden's Arc - https://www.helpingwritersbecomeauthors.com/archetypal-character-arcs-pt-2-the-maiden-arc/ The Virgin's Promise - https://storygrid.com/heroines-journey/The Verbivore quoted Pia Jones' Ted Talk titled “The Heroine's Journey Through Transition”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cgaZElnp-4 Here is that full quote:“We need heroic tools that can take us inside. By inside tools, I mean ones that can take us beneath the surface into a descent beneath what we think we know. Into our internal landscapes to give attention and attend to those mysterious, invisible yet natural processes of change that happen deep inside us. And the point of going here? To let go of the outdated, the outworn and come back with a gift - insight, hope, a dream, a new perspective, a new attitude, a stronger connection to our intuition.”The Verbivore read a paraphrase of a quote from Abraham Maslow. Here is the actual quote and the article she's reference:“I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail.” We consulted many resources while prepping for this episode, here are a few:The Heroine Journey Project - https://heroinejourneys.com/ The Heroine's Journey: Examples, Archetypes, and Infographic - https://storygrid.com/heroines-journey/ Undertaking the Heroine's Journey in Fantasy Books - https://pagesbelowvaultedsky.wordpress.com/2018/04/24/the-heroines-journey-in-fantasy-books/ The Heroine's Journey - The movie “Mulan” as a case study - https://bradleyharper.medium.com/the-heroines-journey-1551d80aa55d The Heroine's journey in Brave - http://sanhaia.weebly.com/blog/the-heroines-journey-in-brave-2012 Neo's Heroine's Journey - http://thinkspiritual.ca/the-matrix-neo-the-heroine Pia Jones' Ted Talk titled “The Heroine's Journey Through Transition”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cgaZElnp-4The Heroine's Journey | The Bone Circle by Bridget Finklaire - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkDZQUbkdpU&list=PLK-VmT9palrS419UeFUMLsxFWZA6aVyxS&index=3 The Hero's Journey | The Bone Circle by Bridget Finklaire - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LFzVLudxYo Why Screenwriters Should Embrace The Heroine's Journey - https://screencraft.org/2017/06/18/how-screenwriters-can-embrace-the-heroines-journey/ This is why the hero's journey is outdated as a creative tool for writers - https://medium.com/swlh/the-heros-journey-is-outdated-as-a-creative-tool-for-writers-d88461f3ed5f Books Mentioned:The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell The Heroine's Journey: Woman's Quest for Wholeness by Maureen Murdock Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype by Clarissa Pinkola Estés 45 Master Characters: Mythic Models for Creating Original Characters, Revised Edition by Victoria Lynn Schmidt The Hunger Games by Suzanne CollinsCatching Fire by Suzanne Collins Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins The Divergent Trilogy by Veronica RothThe Shadow and Bone Trilogy Boxed Set: Shadow and Bone, Siege and Storm, Ruin and Rising by Leigh BardugoSix of Crows by Leigh BardugoCrooked Kingdom by Leigh BardugoMovies Mentioned:Mulan (Animated) - Directed by Barry Cook and Tony BancroftBrave (Animated) - Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda ChapmanWonder Woman - Directed by Patty JenkinsThe Matrix Trilogy - Directed by The WachowskisDivergent - Directed by Neil Burger and Robert SchwentkeMusic from: https://filmmusic.io 'Friendly day' by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com) Licence: CC BY (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)
Brian interviews writer, director, and producer Neil Burger (The Illusionist) about his latest film, Voyagers.
Alors... Magic May marches on! This time, Christian and Scott take another look at a 2006 film featuring a magician at the center: The Illusionist. Despite becoming a box office success, and receiving an Oscar nomination for its cinematography, The Illusionist is not nearly as fondly remembered as The Prestige. Our hosts take a look at writer/director Neil Burger‘s career, share some fun facts as per usual, and then dive into the review. Should The Illusionist be remembered? Or is it better left forgotten? CW: This episode contains discussions of sexual assault, physical and sexual abuse, self-harm, and suicide. This week, Glenn and Daniel see how the young people are doing, starting with Neil Burger‘s half-baked Lord of the Flies non-adaptation, Voyagers, whose cast is let down by material that seems unwilling to commit to its most interesting ideas. We start the show this week with TINA (1:41), the comprehensive HBO Max documentary about music icon Tina Turner, who we all love, but one of us much more than the others. Next, we review VOYAGERS (16:07), Neil Burger's LORD OF THE FLIES on a spaceship, a sci-fi thriller that gets us all extremely riled up. Then we discuss MONDAY (31:23), the Argyris Papadimitropoulos romantic drama starring Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough, which two of us HATE and one of us likes. Lastly, we dig into JAKOB's WIFE (45:46), the delightful Travis Stevens horror comedy starring the always entertaining Barbara Crampton. And on this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about Billy Wilder's quintessential film noir DOUBLE INDEMNITY.

Fun and sci-fi fantasy come together in this expanded episode of #BTLRadioShow as we take a look at VIKES with writer/director TENNEY FAIRCHILD, and VOYAGERS with writer/director NEIL BURGER. Joining us live is writer/director TENNEY FAIRCHILD talking about his coming of age romp, VIKES. And while VIKES may have some sweet charm to it, the film also deals with some timely and topical issues and themes which are even more important today than in 2016-17 when the film was shot. Listen as Tenney talks about his process for story development and subsequently taking the words on the page and translating them into visuals, the casting process, shooting location, the importance of visual detail, and more. And we're talking VOYAGERS thanks to two of my favorite filmmakers, writer/director NEIL BURGER and production designer SCOTT CHAMBLISS. Listen to my prerecorded exclusive interviews with each of these gentlemen as we dig deep into the genesis of the film and Neil's process for crafting a world for a multi-generational space mission visually, thematically, and emotionally. While Neil discusses themes of good vs evil, human nature, science, etc., casting (among the cast, Tye Sheridan, Lily-Rose Depp, Fionn Whitehead, and Colin Farrell), and more, Scott talks about the importance of the production design in furthering the vision of the story and the challenges of creating a physical design to not only embrace the story and visual concepts, but incorporate necessary technical elements for cinematographer Enrique Chediak. (Be on the lookout for my exclusive interview with Enrique on BehindTheLensOnline.net.) And how about a research trip to enlighten and "experience" space travel?? http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Brian Cranston (“Breaking Bad”) and Kevin Hart (“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”) star in “The Upside,” and Americanized remake of the French film, “The Intouchables.” The cast also includes Nicole Kidman (“Bombshell”) and was directed by Neil Burger (“Divergent”).
We all agree Bradley Cooper knocks it out the park, the uncs are joined by Taylor Carver of the Blue Ribbon Podcast Awards to talk about LIMITLESS a Neil Burger joint.
Though the film may have received a mixed reception since its premiere at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, composer Trevor Gureckis' score for "The Goldfinch" was continuously pointed out as a highlight. A new sound in the world of composing this decade, Trevor previously worked alongside Phillip Glass and Kanye West before moving full time to film score composing. More of his work can be heard on Apple TV's newest show "Servant," Netflix's "Bloodline" and the upcoming sci-fi Neil Burger film "Voyagers." Trevor was kind enough to talk to us about his work on "The Goldfinch" which we would argue is sublime and should not be discounted for awards consideration. Break out your black tights and your pink hair because Brenna and Joe are headed into the Dauntless Pit with Veronica Roth's 2011 bestseller Divergent and the Neil Burger-helmed 2014 adaptation. Both hosts have mixed feelings, contrasting their initial enjoyment of the texts back in the day with the more complicated, less fun reading of both in a post-Trump, anti-intellectual world. It's not all doom and gloom, though: it turns out Brenna's brother and Joe's husband have nearly identical reactions to the film, Brenna gets far too much pleasure whispering the titular term and the episode ends with a SHOCKING revelation that Brenna has been keeping from Joe for the entirety of their friendship! Writer/Director JEFF FRY is back with us live talking about his WWII short film KRIEG and some upcoming film festivals where you can catch this amazing film. Listen as Jeff talks about his search for the perfect international cast, locating authentic uniforms, planes, vehicles and other equipment, overcoming the challenges of thefts of rare original items which forced him to build a WWII radio similar to that used by the Resistance, the ten-year process of script to screen, as well as research into the military aspects of the war from the perspective of the Nazis, Allies and Resistance fighters. A Herculean undertaking that pays off in spades when you see the end product. And you'll hear excerpts of our exclusive interview with director NEIL BURGER talking about the #1 box office movie - THE UPSIDE! Last week you heard what Kevin Hart had to say about tackling a more dramatic role with more sobering and restrained humor. Now hear what his director has to say. Covering everything from what made him accept the challenge to remake an internationally acclaimed and well-received film ("The Intouchables") but with his own vision, to cinematography and production design, to the research that went into exacting as authentic as possible portrayal of a quadriplegic and that of his aides, Neil goes in-depth on all. Unfortunately, we ran out of time and didn't get to our exclusive interview with costume designer SANDY POWELL and production designer JOHN MHYRE talking about the magic of MARY POPPINS RETURNS, but you can listen to it now on www.BehindTheLensOnline.net. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
BEHIND THE LENS kicks off its fifth year with a jam-packed show and special guest, director JEN McGOWAN. First up we're talking about THE UPSIDE. An update and fresh English-language version from director Neil Burger of the acclaimed, internationally popular, "The Intouchables." Starring Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston and Nicole Kidman, THE UPSIDE is one of the first "must see" films of the year. And one of the things that makes this a "must see" is KEVIN HART's performance. Not what we're accustomed to from Hart, in THE UPSIDE he finds a perfect balance with a light comedic touch and a sobering dramatic arc that is revelatory. Listen as Hart talks about this performance and stretching his acting chops from within. And then we go to the birds with BIRD BOX. Take a listen to excerpts of our exclusive interview with screenwriter ERIC HEISSERER as he talks about developing Sandra Bullock's character of Malorie as well as the depth of development for the supporting characters. Plus, Eric talks about his unique visual screenwriting approach with this film and the "rules" he established for this story. Very exciting is our special guest who joins us live at the mid-point of the show – director JEN McGOWAN. The last time we spoke with Jen was several years ago for her freshman feature, the charming and engaging "Kelly & Cal." Jen is now back with her sophomore feature film – RUST CREEK, a thriller with a twist and opening in theatres February 11th. Shot on location during the winter in the Kentucky woods, listen as Jen talks about some of the logistical challenges presented by the location and the weather, the process of casting and the ultimate chemistry between her two leads, and the importance of gender parity on film crews. In fact, the RUST CREEK crew boasts more than one-half of the department heads as female! Plus, find out about FILM POWERED, a networking group for women in the entertainment and film industry which was founded by Jen in 2015. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
We read the 2001 novel The Dark Fields (later retitled Limitless) by Alan Glynn and watched the 2011 adaptation Limitless directed by a Radaptations distinguished alum Neil Burger starring two more Radaptations distinguished alum Bradley Cooper and Robert DeNiro! Most importantly though, we offer up our thoughts as to whether or not Bradley Cooper is capable of murder. Live your life without limits and visit us on Twitter @Radaptations.
What's up, my good good science dudes!Join us this week as we think through the science in the 2011 Neil Burger flick "Limitless!"Pace talks about drug action in the brain, Kennon sits there and looks pretty, and Sean dishes out an absolute takedown of modern techniques in cinematography. We'll be back again in two weeks with the science of HIV/AIDs, as covered in the movie "Dallas Buyer's Club."Send us your questions on Twitter, Facebook, or at reelsciencecast@gmail.com, and we'll answer them on the show!
Michael decides it’s time to get cerebral and opts for Neil Burger’s ‘Limitless’. We’re talking brain myths, we’re talking nootropics, and of course, we’re talking/taking modafinil. Featuring: Professor Barbara Sahakian
A Vakfolt versus történetének első olyan összecsapása következik, amely nem ipari kémkedés eredménye, hanem teljesen véletlenszerűen alakult. A 2006-ban másfél hónap eltéréssel bemutatott The Illusionist és a The Prestige (magyarul A mágus, illetve A tökéletes trükk) mindkettője 19. század végi bűvészekkel foglalkozik, ám Neil Burger novellafeldolgozása és Christopher Nolan regényadaptációja egymástül függetlenül készültek. Bár a Following kapcsán már kitárgyaltuk Nolan filmográfiáját, azért ismét átfutjuk, milyen út vezetett ahhoz az üres csekkhez, amelyet a The Prestige-re váltott be a rendező. Megtárgyaljuk, miért pont ebben a filmjében értek össze a legszebben a kedvelt témái, ahogy azt is, mi hiányzik a The Illusionist-ből a nagy varázslathoz. We read Steven Millhauser's short story Eisenheim the Illusionist (don't skip this one, folks) and watched its 2006 adaptation The Illusionist directed by Neil Burger starring Edward Norton and a very awe-induced Paul Giamatti. Join us as we revel in the mastery that is Steven Millhauser before extensive talk about sad warlock Edward Norton and his turn of the century facial hair. You'll also hear Bridget's spot-on Paul Giamatti impression before we tell the tale of how our resident skeptic Ginny was won over by real life illusionist Criss Angel. What better way to kick off the spring tentpole season than with the launch of another adaptation of a young adult novel. This time, it's Veronica Roth's take on dystopian Abercrombie in Divergent. This is perhaps the most divided we've been on The Film Board. Andy Nelson, Steve Sarmento, and Tommy Metz III come out as pro-faction, Pete Wright and Mike Evans against. We take on Roth's story and how well it translates to the big screen. We talk factions and the nature of social control in an after-the-fall Chicago. Somewhere in there, Pete makes a case for the musical montage, and Tommy sings. The two are not related. If you're wondering whether Divergence is a film for you, there's likely someone on this week's episode that will strike your fancy. Listen in! ‘Divergent’ directed by Neil Burger (‘Limitless’) takes us to the city of Chicago, 100 years in the future, where ‘conformity’ is all the rage. Well actually it’s the law. After a devastating war, people are divided into five factions…Amity…they’re the folks that like to plant vegetables and dress like 60’s hippies…The Erudites…a group that Mark […]

2006 was quite the year for movies about stage magicians, and as our series continues, we've decided to focus solely on the 3 films dealing with prestidigitation that came out that year. Neil Burger's The Illusionist came out a few months before Christopher Nolan's The Prestige, but it dealt with an entirely different story. True, they both take place in the world of magicians, but while Nolan's film dealt with a strong professional rivalry, Burger's dealt with an unrequited love and the fight the two lovers struggle through to be together. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we talk about The Illusionist and the magical year of 2006. We chat about the performances in the film — Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti, Rufus Sewell, and Jessica Biel primarily — and how they work for us. We chat about the nature of the ending of the film and how the nature of the end works — or doesn't. We discuss the actual magic tricks performed in the film, all based on actual tricks of the period, and how the CG embellishments actually may detract from the power of the story. And we talk about the cinematography and score and the strengths and weaknesses in them. We have a great time revisiting this film. Tune in!

The special request floodgates are open and we are loving it! This week we have a special request that came in via Twitter. We're watching two magician films that both came out in 2006. First, THE ILLUSIONIST, directed by Neil Burger, and starring Edward Norton, Jessica "Hotpants" Biel (pretty sure that's her full name by birth), and Paul Giamatti. After that, we're lighting things up with THE PRESTIGE, directed by Christopher Nolan, and starring Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, and Michael Caine. Abra-cadabra, Movieciders! It's time for another MASS MOVIECIDE!
