We open with another correction. Yesterday it was the AP, today it is MSNBC. Seems everyone wanted to jump right to “Putin” when DNI Tulsi Gabbard talked about Trump and his relationship with another world leader. The Hill had to admit President Trump has been correct about Ukraine and how it was badly managed by everyone involved. Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) thinks it's funny to mock an American company that builds an American production with American labor. The war on Tesla is a coordinated implementation of domestic terrorism. CNN's Scott Jennings basically says, that's all the Left has are emotional outbursts and violence. We then move to more decisions of radical, activist judges who need to be reined before we really do suffer a full collapse over the rule of law. Congress has the ability to do that if they would get off their lazy butts. Even Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) put out a message to that effect. This also leads to more discussion over the memo of Chief Justice Roberts. Sean Davis, CEO and co-founder of The Federalist shares his frustration with trying to get an actual copy of the whole statement. Elon Musk describes what DOGE is finding and it is tantamount to legalized corruption, especially as it relates to NGO's and non-profits. The activist judges all see to have connections to the money flowing into the hands of family, spouses and/or relatives. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says people are mad because Elon Musk is “moving their cheese.” Musk corrects him and says, “It's not their cheese.” That is the corruption we are seeing in a nutshell. We know the name of the White House Staff Secretary how used the autopen with what appears to have been without Joe Biden's knowledge. Her name is Neera Tanden. The coronated Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, shows us that VP Kamala Harris isn't the only one gifted with nonsensical word salad. It seems incoming students at Harvard are not good at basic Algebra. In fact, they are adding remedial algebra classes. Finally, Trump released a tweet right after talking for an hour with President Zelenskyy about the call he had the previous day with Russia. It seems progress is being made toward a peace deal. Topics We Cover On This Episode [0:40] Shawn introduces this episode of the podcast. [2:20] Shawn welcomes Matt Britton and Steve Karlin to the podcast. [5:20] Matt talks about Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s background. [9:30] Are there any concerns about Kavanaugh from the pro-life perspective? [17:45] Why it’s important for the Supreme Court to remain non-partisan. [20:20] The guys talk about the pro-abortion industry’s response to Kavanaugh. [23:30] How to leverage this nomination to spotlight abortion as November approaches. [25:00] What will Kavanaugh’s nomination process look like? Is it a slam dunk? [29:20] What can you do? Pray! This is the news we’ve all be waiting for! Judge, Brett Kavanaugh has been announced as President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee. On this episode of the 40 Days for Life Podcast, you’ll hear from Shawn Carney, Steve Karlen, and Matt Britton. In their conversation, the guys go over some background information on Brett Kavanaugh, what concerns the pro-life community should have about his nomination, why the Supreme Court should remain non-partisan, how the abortion industry is responding to Mr. Kavanaugh’s nomination, and much more! This is an exciting time to be part of the pro-life movement, don’t forget to use the best tool you have available, prayer! Who is Brett Kavanaugh? Go on and admit it, you were waiting with baited breath to see who President Trump would select as his SCOTUS nominee, weren’t you? Of course, you were! This was an important decision that many in the pro-life community had been anticipating. Now we have it, the President has nominated, Judge Brett Kavanaugh. Who is he? Mr. Kavanaugh is a United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He previously served as White House Staff Secretary during the presidency of George W. Bush. Mr. Kavanaugh is a strong family man, married with two daughters. He is also a very active member of his faith community (Catholic) and takes time out of his busy schedule to serve the homeless. Are there any concerns about Judge Kavanaugh from the pro-life community? Let’s face it, when it comes to Supreme Court nominees, the pro-life community has had more than ample reasons for caution and concern. When a new nominee like Judge Kavanaugh is presented, it’s wise to take the time and consider if there are any concerns in their record or body of work. For all intents and purposes, there is nothing to report when it comes to Mr. Kavanaugh’s record, in fact, there is plenty to get excited about! Looking at his record on abortion, free speech, and religious liberty it seems like the pro-life community is getting quite the upgrade from Justice Kennedy! Rest assured, Judge Kavanaugh seems to be a perfect nominee that’ll go to work fulfilling President Trump’s promise to appoint pro-life justices to the highest court in the land. Good news, the pro-abortion crowd HATES Judge Kavanaugh. As nice as it would be to see a Supreme Court nominee of Judge Kavanaugh’s caliber warmly accepted by all of our nation's leaders, it’s helpful to remember that there is a reason why he’s facing early opposition. It doesn’t take much research to find that Mr. Kavanaugh is almost universally opposed by Democrats and anyone who calls themselves “Pro-choice.” Just because he’s facing opposition from the other side doesn’t mean he should automatically get a pass when it comes to criticism and critique from the pro-life community but it is a good sign! While it’s not a slam dunk, Judge Kavanaugh’s chances are good. As the initial excitement over Judge Kavanaugh winds down, it’s a good time to examine and consider his chances when it comes to confirmation. Just a quick reminder, when it comes to filling a Supreme Court vacancy, it’s the President’s responsibility to nominate a candidate and it’s the United States Senate’s job to approve or reject that nominee by a simple majority vote. While it’s no slam dunk, the way things look to be playing out in the U.S. Senate seems to indicate that Mr. Kavanaugh will make it through the confirmation process to be seated as the next Supreme Court Justice. Now is not the time to celebrate! If you live in a swing state, make sure to contact your representative in the U.S. Senate and press them to support Judge Kavanaugh! Michael Imhotep, host of The African History Network Show, on 2-14-18, discussed the Parkland, Florida High School Shooting that took place on 2-14-18 and the White House Daily Press Briefing for Wednesday postponed then canceled. The White House was trying to get their lies straight on a number of different topics including new developments in the Stormy Daniels Ex- Star fiasco and the changing timeline regarding the firing of White House Staff Secretary, Rob Porter. It appears that they used the Parkland, Florida shooting as an excuse to cancel the Press Briefing. As reported by TheHill.com on 2-14-18 at 9:56pm EST, no Daily Press Briefing is scheduled for Thursday. This week, we discuss Rob Porter, former White House Staff Secretary who resigned after images of alleged domestic abuse surfaced in the media. Porter and his ex-wives are all members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and we discuss the ramifications of all-male religious leadership when dealing with abuse. We also tackle the rise of the progressive Christian left and the plans for a "revival" event in Lynchburg, VA - the home of Jerry Falwell Jr. and Liberty University - with leaders such as Rev. William Barber III, Lisa Sharon Harper, Shane Claiborne, and more. Nish rants about the Trump Budget, we give you a couple of book and podcast recommendations, and we get giddy about the new Black Panther film. *Correction* In the episode, it's stated that there is no public university in the District of Columbia. UDC is a public university in the District.
White House Staff Secretary resigned last week amid allegations of domestic abuse and Donald Trump didn't exactly handle it well. After a brief government shut down, Congress passed another short term spending bill. But what's next for the DREAMers? Trump's budget policy priorities have been released and, once again, he's looking to cut funding to NPR, PBS & Meals on Wheels. Finally, Omarosa traded the White House for the Big Brother House. What has she been saying about her time in the Trump administration. Want to help the environment while you browse the internet? Check out our sponsor, Ecosia, at http://ecosia.co/pod
Many of the most important voices on the web today are individuals or small, low-budget organizations: human rights groups, investigative journalists, political dissidents, and fighters for democracy in repressive regimes. These groups don’t have the wherewithal to defend themselves against hackers and bad state actors that would prefer their voices not be heard. Projects like Cloudflare’s Galileo and Google’s Shield help these at-risk groups to weather the heaviest of Internet storms, making sure that their voices cannot be silenced - without having to pay a dime. Doug Kramer, General Counsel for Cloudflare, helps us understand why these projects and groups are so important and how these programs help to protect their websites from attack. Doug Kramer is General Counsel of Cloudflare, where he is responsible for managing the legal, policy, and trust and safety teams. In this role, Doug helps address the broad range of issues that touch the company's operations around the world. Prior to joining Cloudflare, Doug worked for seven years in senior positions in the Obama Administration, including as Deputy Assistant to the President and White House Staff Secretary, as the Deputy Administrator of the US Small Business Administration, and General Counsel at USAID. He previously worked in private practice in Washington, DC and Kansas City. He received Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and English from Georgetown University and his J.D. from University of Chicago Law School. How does use of private email by Trump’s advisers compare to Clinton’s? We answer key questions with political investigations reporter Rosalind Helderman and former White House Staff Secretary and current global security and data lawyer Rajesh De.
In the late 1960's, the United States had become polarized by the Vietnam War, as even many defenders were beginning to question the goals and tactics of the military. One such person was William Watts, who at the time had been promoted to the position of White House Staff Secretary for the National Security Council under President Richard Nixon in 1969. As such, he worked closely with Henry Kissinger, who at the time was National Security Advisor, as well as prominent people from the Nixon White House, such as H.R. Haldeman and John Ehrlichman. Bureaucratic tensions were often high and interpersonal skills were often lacking, which not surprisingly led to bitter infighting and nasty confrontations over policy. U.S. policies on Vietnam and the planning over the invasion of Cambodia, which took place from April-July 1970 were strongly opposed by Watts, which left him an outsider. Watts resigned from the NSC in 1970 after a fiery exchange with Alexander Haig, then Nixon's White House Chief of Staff. In an interview with Charles Stuart Kennedy beginning in August 1995, Watts recalls his experiences working personally with Kissinger and Nixon, the nasty atmosphere that permeated the NSC at the time, and his heated resignation as Staff Secretary after questioning the morality of the very policies he was helping to implement.
Mike and Jay open the show with a discussion of President Trump's very rough week. First was the conviction of former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort on eight counts of bank and tax fraud, followed by a plea deal between federal prosecutors and former Trump attorney Michael Cohen. The Guys discuss both the legal and political ramifications, as well as President Trump's seeming inability to surround himself with ‘the best people'. Next is a look at Senate Democrat arguments for delaying the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. One argument is that the Michael Cohen plea means that any new Justice could be essentially a juror in a potential case against President Trump, an argument both Mike and Jay don't believe holds much water. The second argument has to do with Republicans trying to push through confirmation before the midterms without allowing for adequate time to fully review Kavanaugh's paper trail, particularly from his time as White House Staff Secretary in the George W. Bush administration. This claim has more merit, but Jay and Mike see it more as a stalling tactic than a truly legitimate reason to delay confirmation proceedings. After that, the Guys discuss the indictment of California Republican Duncan Hunter on multiple counts of misuse of campaign funds. Mike points out that Hunter is likely to keep his House seat due to the Democrats nominating a candidate who is a poor fit for Hunter's district. Both Mike and Jay think that Hunter is exactly the sort of ‘grab what you can' officeholder who offends the sensibilities of all small-r republicans. The episode closes with a look at the Environmental Protection Agency's proposed ‘Affordable Clean Energy' rule. Mike argues that it's bad policy that puts corporate profits above public health, whereas Jay sees it as the federal government rightly giving more discretion to the states and the market to deal with power generation and pollution. *Listener support helps make The Politics Guys possible*.
