Join America's Roundtable (https://americasrt.com/) radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy with Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat who delivered a eulogy at President Jimmy Carter's funeral at the Washington National Cathedral. Ambassador Eizenstat shares about Carter's domestic and international successes including the Camp David Accords and how the former president's sincere words and developed personal relationship made an impact to key principals when the talks were about to fail. Carter's tireless efforts led the foundational cornerstone for treaties with Israel's Arab neighbors including Jordan and later through the Trump Administration's Abraham Accords. Ambassador Eizenstat also shares about his personal friendship with the former president. He was at Jimmy Carter's side from his political rise in Georgia through four years in the White House, where he served as Chief Domestic Policy Adviser. He was directly involved in all domestic and economic decisions as well as in many foreign policy ones. The conversation on America's Roundtable also brings to the forefront President Carter's bold economic reforms and how he came to be called the "Champion of Deregulation" by former Senator Phil Gramm (R-TX), a fiscal conservative leader. In an op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal, Senator Gramm stated, " The Carter administration began oil-price deregulation using its regulatory powers and set in place the gradual deregulation of natural-gas prices with the 1978 Natural Gas Policy Act. And while the deregulation of the communications industry was driven by technological change, court decisions, regulatory action and finally legislation, the Carter regulatory reform through the Federal Communications Commission made competition the driving force in the development of policy. Energy deregulation, championed by Mr. Carter and then by Ronald Reagan, produced abundant oil and gas supplies." Brief bio: During a decade and a half of public service in six U.S. administrations, Ambassador Eizenstat has held a number of key senior positions, including Chief White House Domestic Policy Adviser to President Jimmy Carter (1977-1981); U.S. Ambassador to the European Union, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business and Agricultural Affairs, and Deputy Secretary of the Treasury in the Clinton Administration (1993-2001). His recommendation to President Carter to create the Presidential Commission on the Holocaust headed by Elie Wiesel led directly to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, for which he is recognized as a key founder. Ambassador Eizenstat is an author of "President Carter: The White House Years" and "The Art of Diplomacy" During the Trump administration, he was appointed by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as Expert Adviser to the State Department on Holocaust-Era Issues (2018-2021). In the Biden administration, serving as Special Adviser to Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Holocaust Issues, he played a major role in the negotiation of the Best Practices for the Washington Principles on Nazi-Confiscated Art (2024), now supported by 25 countries. He was appointed by President Biden as Chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Council (2022-present). Since 2009, he has served as pro bono Special Negotiator for the Jewish Claims Conference in negotiations with the German government, obtaining billions of dollars of benefits for poor Holocaust survivors, for home care, social and medical services, enhanced pensions, hardship payments, child survivor and Kindertransport survivors, special supplemental payments for the poorest of the poor, and worldwide educational benefits. americasrt.com (https://americasrt.com/) https://ileaderssummit.org/ | https://jerusalemleaderssummit.com/ America's Roundtable on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/americas-roundtable/id1518878472 X: @ileaderssummit @NatashaSrdoc @JoelAnandUSA @supertalk America's Roundtable is co-hosted by Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy, co-founders of International Leaders Summit and the Jerusalem Leaders Summit. Join America's Roundtable (https://americasrt.com/) radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy with the Honorable Stuart E. Eizenstat, Chair of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. The conversation with Ambassador Eizenstat focuses on the rise of anti-Semitism in America, the significance of US leadership on the world stage as isolationism grows from within, combined with an emboldened axis of resistance led by Iran and its proxies, including China and Russia, undermining the West's rule of law civilization. The discussion highlights Ambassador Eizenstat's soon to be released book — “The Art of Diplomacy: How American Negotiators Reached Historic Agreements That Changed the World.” The book's foreword was written by Henry A. Kissinger and a preface presented by James A. Baker III. We cover the importance of America's leadership on the vital fronts of trade, peace and security. Ambassador Eizenstat speaks about the on-going efforts to engage European governments to restitute Jewish property confiscated during WWII and compensate Holocaust victims and their descendants. According to the Associated Press (https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/one-third-of-israeli-holocaust-survivors-live-in-poverty-advocates-say): "Yet among Israel's estimated 165,000 survivors, roughly one in three lives in poverty, according to a survivors' advocacy group." An Axis report states (https://www.axios.com/2024/01/24/holocaust-survivors-worldwide-study-israel-us): Details: About 245,000 Holocaust survivors are living across more than 90 countries, according to a report released Tuesday by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference). The vast majority (95%) are child survivors born between 1928 and 1946. The median age of survivors is 86, and around 61% are women. Roughly half of the survivors live in Israel, while 16% reside in the United States, the country with the second largest percentage, the study found. Around a third of the survivors in the U.S. are living in poverty, Greg Schneider, executive vice president of the Claims Conference, tells Axios. Zoom in: 40% of survivors worldwide access or have accessed social welfare services from over 300 agencies that receive grants administered by the Claims Conference. Services include home care, food, medicine and transportation, among others. Brief bio: Stuart E. Eizenstat of Washington, DC, is Chair of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. He previously served as a member from 2001–2004. He is a senior member of Covington & Burling LLP's international practice. During his public service in four administrations, Ambassador Eizenstat served as chief White House domestic policy adviser to President Carter and held a number of key roles in the Clinton Administration, including Ambassador to the European Union; Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade; Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business, and Agricultural Affairs; and Deputy Secretary of the Treasury. He served as a member of the White House staff for President Johnson. He has made Holocaust justice and memory a major part of his career. During the Carter Administration, Ambassador Eizenstat recommended a President's Commission on the Holocaust chaired by Elie Wiesel and helped draft the legislation authorizing creation of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Talks from the Hoover Institution

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 29, 2023 16:31

March 27, 2023 Hoover Institution | Stanford University A Hoover History Working Group Seminar with Luke Nichter, Geoff Shepard, and Dwight Chapin. New evidence has surfaced in the fifty years since President Nixon's resignation. This seminar gathers together three prominent authorities on Watergate, the biggest political scandal of the 20th century. For 50 years, we were taught a carefully curated history of Watergate. It was the nation's greatest political scandal: a White House-led cover-up, the only resignation of a sitting president, and the conviction of some two dozen members of Richard Nixon's administration. However, with the opening of new archival material, a fuller history emerges that prompts us to challenge what was previously known. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Luke A. Nichter is a Professor of History and James H. Cavanaugh Endowed Chair in Presidential Studies at Chapman University. His area of specialty is the Cold War, the modern presidency, and U.S. political and diplomatic history, with a focus on the "long 1960s" from John F. Kennedy through Watergate. He is a noted expert on Richard Nixon's 3,432 hours of secret White House tapes, and a New York Times bestselling author or editor of seven books, the most recent of which is The Last Brahmin: Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. and the Making of the Cold War. Luke's next book project, under contract with Yale University Press, is tentatively titled The Making of the President, 1968: Lyndon Johnson, Hubert Humphrey, Richard Nixon, George Wallace, and the Election that Changed America, for which he was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for 2020-2021. The book draws on interviews with approximately 85 family members and former staffers, in addition to extensive archival research involving first-time access to a number of key collections that will recast our understanding of the 1968 election. Geoff Shepard is an attorney and former official in the Nixon and Ford administrations. He came to Washington in 1969 as a White House Fellow, after graduating from Harvard Law School. He then joined John Ehrlichman's Domestic Council staff at the Nixon White House, where he served for five years and worked closely with senior officials at the Department of Justice. As a result, he knew and had worked with virtually all of the major Watergate figures. He also worked on President Nixon's Watergate defense team, where he was principal deputy to the President's lead lawyer, J. Fred Buzhardt. In that capacity, he helped transcribe the White House tapes, ran the document rooms holding the seized files of H. R. Haldeman, John Ehrlichman and John Dean, and staffed White House counselors Bryce Harlow and Dean Birch on Watergate issues and developments. Over the past decade, Geoff has uncovered internal documents within the Watergate Special Prosecution Force that call into question everything we've been told about Watergate. His first book, The Secret Plot to Make Ted Kennedy President (2008), focuses on the political intrigue behind the successful exploitation of the Watergate scandal by Kennedy administration loyalists. His second book, The Real Watergate Scandal, Collusion, Conspiracy and the Plot that Brought Nixon Down (2015), focuses on judicial and prosecutorial abuses in the Watergate prosecutions. His third book, The Nixon Conspiracy, Watergate and the Plot to Remove the President (2021), describes prosecutors' work with the House Judiciary Committee to bring about Nixon's impeachment. Dwight Chapin worked as the Personal Aide to former Vice President Richard Nixon during his presidential campaign, becoming Special Assistant to the President after Nixon's election victory. He became Deputy Assistant to the President in 1971, and visited China three times: with Henry Kissinger in October of 1971, with Alexander Haig in January of 1972, and with President Nixon in February of 1972. Chapin served as “Acting Chief of Protocol” for these trips. Chapin remained in his role as Deputy Assistant until he left the White House Staff in March 1973. Chapin was also President and Publisher of Success Magazine for five years, and later served in Asia as Managing Director of Hill and Knowlton Public Relations. In 1988 Chapin established Chapin enterprises, an independent communications consultancy, which he operated for the next thirty years. Chapin published an in-depth memoirs about his time with Nixon, The President's Man (2022), which relates his memorable experiences and concludes with new insights about the break-in that brought down Nixon's presidency.

"TF Delta was an avant garde Army think tank designed to explore high performing organizations.  The question was 'What is the difference that makes a difference?'" That is; What was it made high performing organizations different from their contemporaries? The idea was to move from generally reactive (most of the military), and proactive (what many strived for) to truly high performing units. " - COL(Ret) John B. Alexander http://johnbalexander.com/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_B._AlexanderDr. John Alexander has been a leading advocate for the development of non-lethal weapons since he created renewed interest in the field starting in 1989. In 2003 he served as a mentor to Afghan Ministry of Defense senior officials through the Office of Military Cooperation – Afghanistan, (Coalition Forces) Kabul. He has traveled to all eight (yes, 8) of the continents on Earth. He trekked the remote areas of Tibet including the Mount Everest Base Camp, went to Timbuktu in the Sahel in West Africa, tracked gorillas in Rwanda, met shamans in the Amazon, Mongolia and voodoo witch doctors in Togo and Benin, traveled across cartel controlled areas of Central America, visited ancient temples in Burma, Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia.  In New Guinea, he witnessed the emergence of stone-aged tribes people who still practice cannibalism on occasion, and in 2014 was swimming in the open ocean with humpback whales in the Kingdom of Tonga. In 2015 we attended Kumbh Mela in Nashik India, visited Bali and Borobudur in Indonesia and was diving on the Great Barrier Reef off Australia. In 2016 a highlight was diving with Great White Sharks off Isle de Guadalupe, Mexico. He entered the US Army as a private in 1956 and rose through the ranks to sergeant first class, attended OCS, and was a colonel of Infantry in 1988 when he retired. During his varied career, he held many key positions in special operations, intelligence, and research and development.  From 1966 through early 1969 he commanded Special Forces “A” Teams in Vietnam and Thailand.  His last military assignment was as Director, Advanced System Concepts Office, U.S. Army Laboratory Command.  After retiring from the Army, Dr. Alexander joined Los Alamos National Laboratory where he was instrumental in developing the concept of Non-Lethal Defense.  As a program manager, he conducted non-lethal warfare briefings at the highest levels of government including the White House Staff, National Security Council, Members of Congress, Director of Central Intelligence, and senior Defense officials. He also met with heads of industry, presented at academic institutions, including Columbia, Harvard and MIT. In 2004 he was invited to address the German Bundestag. In 2005 he went to The Hague and addressed international delegates to the Chemical Warfare Convention. Later his civilian U.S. Government position afforded him Senior Executive Service (SES) equivalency.  Dr. Alexander organized and chaired six major conferences on non-lethal warfare and served as a US delegate to several NATO studies on the topic.  As a member of the first Council on Foreign Relations non-lethal warfare study, he was instrumental in influencing the report that is credited with causing the Department of Defense to create a formal Non-Lethal Weapons Policy in July 1996.  He was a distinguished guest lecturer at several DOD universities and has advised the CIA, US Special Operations Command, and the National Intelligence Council.  Dr. Alexander wrote the seminal material on non-lethal warfare.  He published articles in Harvard International Review, Jane's International Defense Review, The Boston Globe, The Futurist, The Washington Post, and several other journals. It begins with the arrogant Special Prosecutors as they reminisce about their plans to figure out a way to get Richard Nixon indicted knowing they had him at his weakest moment. Host Randal Wallace will discuss the fairness of that attempt, the stealing of the President's records and tapes even as he was having them packed to be shipped to San Clemente, and several other of the indignities thrust on him as his power slipped away on that August day. Then we travel back in time and hear from the oral histories of three men intimately involved with the events of that day, President Richard Nixon, Vice President Gerald Ford and speechwriter Ray Price. It was a day of high drama an extreme emotion as the power of the Presidency moved smoothly in the orderly transfer of power that has been the hallmark of our national history. You will also get to hear one of the most inspirational speeches ever given by an American President as Richard Nixon addresses his White House Staff from the East Room just before he leaves to go back to San Clemente, California. Then you will listen in as Vice President Gerald Ford is sworn in as the nations 38th President and delivers his own Inaugural Address. As we close out our three season look at the Watergate Scandal, if you agree with our presentation we hope you will consider contacting the United States Justice Department and let them know that you would like to see a resolution to the current complaint registered there by Geoff Shepard of Prosecutorial Misconduct by the Watergate Special Prosecutors Office. You can do that by writing to:  United States Department of Justice950 Pennsylvania Avenue NWWashington D.C. 20530or calling the Department comment line at 202-353-1555Let's get Justice for Richard Nixon and allow him to take his rightful place in American History.  It is after all long overdue. Stay tuned for our Epilogue series on the Re-Rise of Richard Nixon and our special bonus episodes too!! "The White House counsel is a senior staff appointee of the president of the United States whose role is to advise the president on all legal issues concerning the president and their administration. The Office of Counsel to the President and Vice President was created in 1943, and is responsible for advising on all legal aspects of policy questions; legal issues arising in connection with the President's decision to sign or veto legislation, ethical questions, financial disclosures; and conflicts of interest during employment and post employment. The Counsel's office also helps define the line between official and political activities, oversees executive appointments and judicial selection, handles presidential pardons, reviews legislation and presidential statements, and handles lawsuits against the president in his role as president, as well as serving as the White House contact for the Department of Justice."(This is the definition provided by the website Wikipedia)If ever anyone in the history of employment ever failed anymore totally at the job description provided in the hand book than John W. Dean, I would like to know who it was.  His entire job description can be summed up in shorthand like this"Sit there and when you hear something that sounds illegal, say Mr. President, you can't do that" That is all you have to do, I mean really how hard can it be?  John Dean not only did not do that, he actively made himself the "desk officer of the cover up" , and when he goes up to Camp David to write the report the President has asked him to write, he suddenly realizes all roads filter into one that leads from the Committee to Re-elect the President to the White House Staff itself, like the middle of an hourglass, through one "poison line".....HIM. So what does he do, he shops a deal, at first to the career prosecutors who want nothing to do with  it, and then to the Ervin Committee.  That committee totally controlled by the Democratic Party, leap at the chance to embrace "The Chief Desk Officer of the Cover up" All of this occurs while another force emerges and enters the battlefield.  This force more sinister than anything Richard Nixon has had to face since the North Vietnamese gave up in Paris. A force determined that they would destroy Richard Nixon using any tool, distortion, lie, or sleight of hand they could engineer;  they were the partisan lawyers who made up the staff of the Watergate Special Prosecutors Task Force and it is their sinister rise that begins in this episode.

Mark took the time to write down his experience about his day to day job at The White House in his book “My Time at the Clinton White House: Military Support to the Commander-in-Chief.” Since retiring from the Army in 2001 Mark has held several executive leadership positions; CIO/CSO for World Airways/Global Areo Logistics (US largest long-haul charter airline), CTO (Global Operations)/CISO for InterCall/West (World's largest conferencing company), CISO for TravelClick (SAS in the hospitality space), Acting/Interim CISO for the Georgia Lottery and NCR. Greetings everyone,This last week brought news of President Trump and the First Lady along with many White House staffers getting COVID-19.  It's odd that over 300 people work in the White House in various roles, but only key, public members of the White House Staff selectively got COVID-19.  Also odd that the first debate, the agenda was to push Trump's lack of belief in science and blaming him for COVID-19 deaths.  Low and behold, a couple days later, Trump announces he tests positive for COVID-19 along with his staff.  Lot's of odd issues going on.  Good news is, none of the White House staff are in serious condition and all seem to be doing rather well, versus how the media portrays getting COVID-19.  In other news, the WOKE culture of the NBA and NFL are showing and the league hypocrites are starting to back track the false racist narratives they have been banking on.  Is it really about "Social Injustices" or about making that money. As always you can reach us at perceptionerection@gmail.com

Not just our spiritual practice to help us create space in our hearts and responses, but in practicing the art of being curious and looking for common ground. Like by using voca.vote to share opinions on reparations for slavery, and reading the comments from those who disagree with your own stance. Real talk, applying spiritual principles to life without pretending it's not challenging, but also looking for the transcendent in the spaces between.

Scot Faulkner joins host T. J. O’Hara on Deconstructed to discuss his experience as the first Chief Administrative Officer of the United States House of Representatives and how he views the transitioning nature of our Nation. He shares the inside story of just how corrupt the House was when he was called upon to “fix it” in 1995 and who erected barriers (and why) to limit the change in the second edition of his critically acclaimed bestseller, "Naked Emperors; The Failure of the Republican Revolution.” Prior to serving as the House of Representatives’ first CAO, Mr. Faulkner held executive positions at the Federal Aviation Administration, the General Services Administration, and the Peace Corps as well as serving in the Presidential Transition and on the White House Staff for the Reagan Administration. His business-based reforms saved our country hundreds of millions of dollars and became a model for the operation of at least 44 national parliaments around the world. Mr. Faulkner’s accomplishments have been recognized with 26 management awards and four letters of commendation from the President of the United States. His approach was named one of the Top 100 Innovations in American Government by the Ford Foundation and Harvard University, and he personally was honored as an Outstanding Member of Congress by Americans for Tax Reform. In other words, his opinions are based on facts rather than speculation. Scot and T. J. explore recent events and their impact on our Nation’s collective memory, free speech, and civic culture. Mr. Faulkner also discuss the “death of leadership” and the emergence of a new wave of “naked emperors” who favor money and power over the good of the people. He also shares his view on one of the elements that has shaken the current Administration and how it could have been avoided. This is a fascinating and insightful segment that reveals just how bad Congress was… and how bad it remains. You will even learn what members of Congress laughingly referred to as “the last plantation” within its own walls. Brace yourself for a dose of reality and realize the ongoing efforts that are made to hide the truth from the general public.

The F Word with Laura Flanders

U.S. President Barack Obama has ordered a review of the distribution of military hardware to state and local police. That's a relief. Now can we have a review of the distribution of military influence throughout US society? What we've learned so far is that under a federal program, more than $5 billion worth of military equipment has gone to more than 8,000 city and state agencies since 1997. I found out this weekend that one small town not far from me received six military HumVees for a police department where just 25 officers work. Mine-resistant trucks aren't the only war tools showing up in US suburbs. Take those gunshot wounds. Michael Brown, the unarmed teen shot by a police in Ferguson August 9, was shot six times, twice in the head. Ever wonder why so many gun shot victims show up with multiple bullets in their flesh? It's certainly the cop; it's also the gun. As the Atlantic Magazine reported this summer, every time that Congress pays a military contractor to develop a new killer weapon for the battlefield, it almost at once shows up at High Street gun shops – and in Hollywood movies, like Lethal Weapon 1,2, 3 & 4. Obama's review has been sparked by public shock at images from Ferguson, but what do people think happens when war profiteers dominate the marketplace, the media and Congress? There's a lot of surplus out there because defense contractors lobby for it. The top five companies spent more than $65 million last year persuading Congress to cancel promised cuts. As a result the 2014 budget gave them everything they asked for, including the controversial F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the most expensive weapons system ever, and a tank that we already know that nobody wants. Weapons makers don't just do war work of course. Lockheed Martin, the maker of that costly fighter, has also snapped up government contracts to do data collection for everyone from the Postal Service and IRS, despite a history of fraud. Now the country's SWAT teams are lobbying to keep their military surplus and there's about to be more of it because Congress is already hearing the Pentagon's $555 billion budget for next year, isn't enough, in light of the threat posed by the Islamic State. That's good news for the SWAT teams and probably for ISIS. In Syria and Iraq, ISIS has seized an arsenal of US military gear -- even more than the Ferguson police! So by all means yes, let's examine the surplus program. But let's not stop at that. While we're at it, Obama says the review will be done by White House Staff and “relevant" agencies including Homeland Security and the Departments of Defense. We can guess what will come of that. How about the residents in towns with all this firepower review the program? Especially the ones who've been shocked, not just by the images, but by the experience of having police point assault rifles at their heads. For GRITtv, I'm Laura Flanders
