Good morning, RVA! It's 54 °F, and, today, summerish temperatures return! Expect highs in the 80s this afternoon and for them to stretch on through next week. Are these record highs? Probably! Am I recovering from a fall cold? Yes! Will I still try to get out into the forest on my bicycle despite probably needing to rest? We'll see! Water cooler Remember last year when the Governor wanted to create permanent tax cuts for the wealthy but didn't have the votes and settled instead for one-time rebates, $200 for individuals and $400 for families? Well, the Department of Taxation has set up a website to check if you're eligible for those rebates (you gotta create an account first), and says the checks should hit your mailbox before December. The Cynical Part of Me raises an eyebrow at the near-election timing of this launch. The Regular Part of Me knows that the General Assembly just passed its budget a hot second ago and casual-sounding things like “setting up a website to check if you're eligible” are actually huge projects for already overworked teams. Looking ahead, and given all the press releases I get from Youngkin's team about the Commonwealth's surging revenue, I'd guess those permanent tax cuts for the wealthy will make a return in this coming year's budget, too. Just another reason why the November 7th election—in just 12 days!—is so very important. Make sure you've got a plan to vote, OK? In other state government news, Ben Paviour at VPM reports on the ongoing mess at the Department of Elections and their decision to remove thousands of folks from the voter rolls. It's hard to tell what's actually going on here, and I'd argue that's probably part of the point. Skip the confusion, and tap straight on through to the Department of Elections website to check your voter registration status right now. Also at VPM, Jahd Khalil writes about Republicans' plans to ban abortion should they win control of the General Assembly next month (see above about voting!). Khalil links to this recent survey by CNU's Wason Center, which asked potential voters a bunch of questions about their Top Issues heading into this election. Tap through and dig into the data, because it's fascinating. While folks support a handful of liberal issues—like keeping abortion legal, teaching kids about racism in public schools, retail marijuana sales, and not banning books—they're basically split on whether they'll vote for a Democrat or a Republican. Pulitzer Prize Winner Michael Paul Williams has more on the survey results, including this bit: “When likely voters were asked who they trusted most to make the right decisions for children in K-12 public schools, 81% of respondents trusted teachers “somewhat” or “a lot” — more so than school administrators (67%), local school boards (59%) and state government (55%). That's right: teachers were deemed more trustworthy than the school boards micromanaging education.” Standard caveats apply about how do surveys even work in a world where no one answers their phone, but still, fascinating! It's not all just state-level elections popping up on ballots, some of us get to vote for local candidates, too. If you're a Henrico resident cast your web browsers back over to the RTD where Sean Jones has put together a nice overview of the 10 candidates running for the Board of Supervisors. Eileen Mellon at Richmond Magazine sat down with Nathan Hughes, a real estate agent who's worked with local restauranteurs for decades, to talk about cursed restaurant spots. Hughes tries to explain that actual things—like location, foot traffic, and layout—probably contribute more to a restaurant's success than fake things like curses. Likely story, Hughes! Reminder: Breakaway RVA will host their final chill, informative, and fun group bike ride tonight. Meet at Scuffletown Park at 5:45 PM, wheels up at 6:00 PM! Tonight, at 6:00 PM, the YWCA host the 27th annual Remember My Name memorial at Cedar Street Baptist Church (2301 Cedar Street). This memorial gives friends, family, and community members a chance to commemorate those who have lost their lives due to domestic violence and intimate partner violence. According to the YWCA, “nearly one-third of all homicides in Virginia are attributed to domestic or intimate partner violence.” You can learn more and register (to help with the headcount) over on the website. This morning's longread Naked beneath Our Clothes I loved this essay on nakedness and bodies and how we're so weird about both. Everyone's got a body, and we've done a lot of really gross societal work to make sure we've all got thoughts on those bodies—the ones that belong to other people, sure, but mostly the one that belongs to us. Seeing other naked bodies, though, did not make me feel disrespectful. It was wondrous. The shared ease made being human more palatable. And I soon realized there is nothing exhibitionist about being naked. People look you in the eye; nobody stares at the rest of you. Nothing is new, shocking, revelatory. All the lumps and bumps, moles and birthmarks, scars and stretch marks are on display, and the need to conceal your own drops away. Nakedness, done right, has no ego. There are problems with exposing the body, of course, but there are also problems in cultures that conceal. The more artfully we cover our bodies, the more mystique there is. But the more mystique there is, the greater the desire to own, steal, guard, or violate that alluring, luring, concealed body. The paradox is built in. If you'd like to suggest a longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol' Patreon. Picture of the Day These mushrooms understand dense housing.

Timothy Olyphant has been a regular presence on various TV shows every single year dating back to Damages in 2009, before the original Justified. And yet, it feels significant that he's in no less than three new series this year. The Nose already covered the first, Daisy Jones & the Six. This week, we catch up with the other two: Full Circle is a Max Original limited series written and created by Ed Solomon and photographed, edited, and directed by Steven Soderbergh. Here's Warner Bros.'s logline: “An investigation into a botched kidnapping uncovers long-held secrets connecting multiple characters and cultures in present day New York City.” It stars an ensemble cast that includes Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Timothy Olyphant, CCH Pounder, and Dennis Quaid. And: Justified: City Primeval is an FX limited series continuation of Justified, which ended in 2015 after six seasons and 78 episodes. It is based on the Elmore Leonard novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroitand short story “Fire in the Hole.” Olyphant reprises his role as U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens. Some other stuff that happened this week, give or take: William Friedkin, Acclaimed Director of ‘The French Connection' and ‘The Exorcist,' Dies at 87 The Oscar winner “never played by the rules, often to my own detriment,” he said. HOW TO MAKE FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLEIF I COULD ONLY REMEMBER MY NAME by David Crosby (1971, Atlantic)The Reaper continues its rampage, cutting swathes across the aging population of musical pioneers. Last week it was Jeff Beck, yesterday David Crosby. In fairness, it was actually amazing that the Croz lived as long as he did. He had diabetes, and In 1994 underwent a liver transplant (paid for by Phil Collins), after suffering for years with Hep C. But despite a notorious reputation for drug abuse that would cripple even a hardened junkie, David kept forging an unfettered path, making enemies with his thoughtless taunts, enduring break ups and reunions, yet still creating some of our greatest music with his frenemies, solo, and for the last mile in collaboration with his long-abandoned and rediscovered son, James Raymond.David Van Cortland Crosby, the son of Academy Award Winning cinematographer Floyd Crosby, was a California boy who became foundational to the California folk-rock soundtrack of our generation, and despite the fact that near the end of his life he had to stay on the road and sell his catalogue to pay off his mortgage, those songs will reside forever in the Laurel Canyon canon. Crosby was a notoriously difficult character who burnt nearly every bridge he ever crossed. His bandmate from the Byrds, Jim McGuinn steadfastly refused to work with him again despite David's constant imprecations to reunite; he boldly dissed and insulted Neil Young's soul-mate Darryl Hannah after the death of Neil's first wife Pegi, and somehow alienated his biggest supporter in life, Graham Nash. But, despite this, musician Melissa Etheridge solicited his sperm to make her babies. Maybe because, trumping all the difficulty, David's harmonic acumen was unmatched and a divine gift from God. So, there he undeniably stands: a twice inducted Rock n Roll Hall of Famer for founding two of the most important groups in Rock history. And, this etherial, transcendent solo effort, recorded with the aid of Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Graham Nash, along with members of The Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead represents an artist whose questing musical imagination was always and eternally of a deeply spiritual nature. Humans are so complicated. As Dylan said: “I contain multitudes,” and David Crosby was an exemplar of that.

Welcome back for another episode of Don't Know Her? And this time Michael and Scott turn their attention to cinematic royalty... Geraldine Chaplin! We are thrilled to be joined by Zita Short, who you may (or should) know from The 300 Passions podcast, to talk about Geraldine's dynamic film legacy. The daughter of Charlie Chaplin, Geraldine has made an indelible mark in a career that spans British, American, Spanish and French cinema. With so much to talk about with Geraldine, we decided to focus on a small handful of her films, namely: Criá Cuervos (Carlos Saura, 1976), Nashville (Robert Altman, 1975), Remember My Name (Alan Rudolph, 1978) and Talk To Her (Pedro Almodóvar, 2002). Then, it is Zita vs Scott in Michael's Hollywood Dynasties quiz. Who knows more about cinema's most revered families? As always, we end the episode with some fantasy casting opportunities for Geraldine. Who would we love to see her work with? Which curious remakes do we have in mind? Durk Derrick Banks, aka, Lil Durk, exploded onto the rap scene in the early 2010s. At that point, he was still only a teenager, but thanks to a wicked self-starter streak, he founded his very own rap collective known as “Only the Family” through which he would drop his original mixtapes like “I'm a Hitta” and “Signed to the Streets”. On the bright side of fame, all of that hard work paid off when he wound up on Def Jam Recordings in 2015. He'd soon after released his debut studio album, “Remember My Name” to some stupendous sales numbers that would see the LP climb all the way to the 14-spot on the Billboard 200. From that point on, Durk has achieved more and more success with each subsequent album release going on to sell more copies than the last. But on the dark side of fame is another story altogether, and while Lil Durk may be one of rap music's most popular artists -- that's not to say that the man isn't riddled in controversy. In fact, Lil Durk's life has been consumed with fallen friends, multiple arrests, time spent in the slammer, home invasions, and yes, even serious criminal actions. Oh, and did I mention that he recently released his list of Top 50 Rappers of all time? For some reason that really seemed to set people off. So, let's take a walk on the Dark Side of Fame starring Lil Durk. 1
As we enter episode four of our five episode look at one year in the life of CSNY we shine the spotlight on David Crosby and his debut solo album released in 1971 "If I Could Only Remember My Name". We also talk more about the dramatics inside and out of CSNY in 1970-71.
"Throughout REMEMBER MY NAME the actors work hard to fulfill the surface requirements of scenes that have no dramatic foundation, and the results are often skittish and baffling." Unlike Janet Maslin of the New York Times one host can't get enough Anthony Perkins so we return to him as a leading man in this episode. This produces troubling results as the other host thinks he's a "nice guy" in this somewhat hard-to-find film (unless you aren't an animal and have Turner Classic Movies) and that brings up questions that are best left unanswered about this host's dating life. What is not in doubt is that Geraldine Chaplin (not Paige) gives an all time performance about a persistent woman who is sex-positive and suffers no fools. We think that was the message here.
