Welcome to the Official Coastline Covenant Podcast! We'll post weekly conversations, devotions, and interviews that are all meant to grow and help shape you into a joyful, courageous follower of Jesus Christ
Hunter is joined by Jeremy Megginson to talk about the organization Foster the City, which is a group that seeks to equip churches to provide loving homes for foster children. Jeremy talks about the events that led him to get involved with Foster the City, some staggering statistics, and tangible ways that we can help. For more info, you can check out Foster the City right here, or email Jeremy.
In continuing our conversations about the relationship between the physical and the non-physical, Hunter welcomes very special guest Dr. Delanie Brunet, a physical therapist in San Diego, CA. Delanie and Hunter talk about the power of healing, overcoming injury, and practical ways believers can physically enhance their spiritual state. This is a GREAT EPISODE! Big thanks to Delanie for taking time out of wedding planning to talk.
Hunter sits down with resident theo nerd and Coastline's most recent preacher, Andrew Faris. They talk about the vision of gender as put forth by the Bible, good and bad messages about gender that you see in the church, and ninjas.
Hunter talks with nurse extraordinaire, Kelly Donohue! They talk about her path to becoming a nurse, her experience in a hospital setting vs. a school setting, and ways that she experiences the non-physical realm impacting the physical realm during her work day. They also talk about The HBO Max show The Pitt, her gnarliest nursing story, and why sleep is (maybe) overrated. This was a GREAT conversation, and we hope you enjoy!
Hunter and Jeannine Hanger (or Dr. Hanger, or Theo Nerd...) talk about some of the ideas from her sermon in our new series, The Temple.
Shawn re-preaches the first sermon in our new series, The Temple.
Hunter, Nikki, and Shawn talk about Easter fashion, who we have in mind when we plan this service, and what tone we're hoping to strike with Good Friday. We'll see you at the park, THIS SUNDAY!
In the loosest and most tired episode of the Coastline Covenant MMMBopcast, Hunter sits down (in his home!) with Mary Beth to discuss Lent at her home church on Catalina, the worry that accompanies sitting with your presence in the presence of God, and the depth of this season. They end with a game where Hunter asks Mary Beth to guess what certain celebrities gave up for Lent.
Hunter sits down with the "Fasting Queen of Coastline" herself to discuss grace, legalism, how we experience Lent in with our senses, and hanging out with Jesus. Funny enough: they recorded an episode last week and it didn't end up saving, so we hope you enjoy this second try!
Hunter sits down (virtually!) with Lorrie Tom, and they discuss her background in literature and writing, what she's doing this year for Lent, and things they both like (The Smiths) and things they have differing opinions about (The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen). Lorrie's post on her Substack is mentioned frequently, so we recommend reading it before you listen. You can find it here!
During this Lent season, we're trying to simplify things on the podcast. Instead of intricate series and dense topics, we're simply just asking about people's experiences with Lent. What are you giving up? What has Lent meant to you over the years? What do you hope to gain? We're kicking things off with two high school boys: Mason McLennan and Chapman Hurley. They (alongside Hunter) fasted for the first time ever last week, and they discuss the benefits, the difficulties, and how they want to integrate this practice in their lives moving forward.
Lent is upon us! Join Michael, Shawn, and Hunter as they discuss what they're giving up (or adding) for Lent, how this season has become more and more important over the years, and the value of being present. All of this is meant to get you excited about our Ash Wednesday Service on Wednesday, March 5th at 7:00PM!
Hunter sits down with Garrick to talk about Bob Dylan... but most importantly, they discuss and preview our upcoming Coastline Lab: Practicing the Presence of the Holy Spirit. Garrick talks about his journey in the Spirit, his excitement in the format of these upcoming Labs, and his hope for the individual who attends and how their involvement will ultimately bless Coastline. A Year in the Spirit... how does it feel?
Camps are a big part of youth ministry, so we decided to ask some of our students what their favorite part of camp was this year. You'll hear from a bunch of different students who all enjoyed heading up to Hume SoCal this year!
Hunter sits down with his old friend (and new-ish) employee Luke Megginson to talk about his life, his ministry experience, and how his time working at Coastline has been so far. Then, Hunter gives Luke some questions straight from the Proust Questionnaire.
Hunter talks to Nikki about her upcoming sabbatical, her ministry and employment history (shout out TJ Maxx!), and a bit about what she personally is hoping to get out of this time off. They end the episode by reflecting on quotes about rest from some of our most insightful public figures. We'll miss you, Nikki! Hope that you enjoy Lady Gaga, whale sharks, and Traitors!
In a special solo pod, Hunter lists 8 reasons that you should memorize Romans 8.
Saying that this episode is a "deep dive on Romans 8" almost feels like an understatement. Beyond the nitty-gritty of the passage, Shawn and Hunter talk about why this is the right way to start our Year in the Spirit series, the misunderstanding surrounding Romans 8:28, and the beauty of life in the Spirit. They also talk about reality TV and dogs. Typical!
Happy New Year! Hunter, Shawn, and Garrick discuss Coastline's 2025 vision: A Year in the Spirit. Beyond that they discuss "Auld Lang Syne", Coastline's Prayer and Vision night from September, and new catchphrases.
All six Coastline Staff members talk about Christmas movies, highlights from this past year, and play a game where they try to rank some of the events in the life of Coastline this past year. The podcast will be off until 2025! Thanks for listening!
Hunter and Nikki talk about the best baby monitors, debrief the successful Christmas Market, and hype up the Coastline Covenant Advent Devotionals by having two of our authors (Samantha Chapman and Sam Van Wagner) read their devotional on the podcast. You can find all of the entries here!
Hunter and Michael wrap-up the TEN WEEK series "How to Worship" by reflecting on what they've learned, clearing up some unclear ideas, and talking about their hopes for the future of this conversation that we've only just begun.
Hunter and Michael are joined by a very special guest on this week's episode of How to Worship: Bryce Komae! In addition to being Hunter's best friend, Bryce is a volunteer worship leader at his church. How does he navigate worship "leading", even though he's not a pastor? What is the worship culture like at his church? What does his week look like when he's navigating a worship set on Sunday and a full-time job? We hope you enjoy this episode!
Hunter and Shawn talk about Coastline's new teaching series: Good Posture. What was the heart behind this series? What's the hope for a series like this? What do we think about chiropractors? All of this and more on this episode of the Coastline Covenant Podcast!
In this episode of our "How to Worship" podcast series, Hunter and Michael are joined by Emily Hamilton from the band For All Seasons! They talk about Emily's journey as a touring Christian musician, her vulnerability as a worship leader, and the direction sees worship music heading. For All Seasons is the real deal! Check them out on Spotify!
Hunter and Michael couldn't get on track this week for a new episode, but they've planned a few more in this series that will certainly be worth the wait! Until then, go back and listen to any episodes you've missed, send your Mount Rushmores, and get excited!
Sometimes, our own vulnerability (or lack thereof) gets in the way of our worship. In this episode, Hunter and Michael expand on their ideas surrounding vulnerability in worship, and God's place both as the object of worship and the person to whom we can be fully open and honest. They talk about certain behaviors we can cultivate to begin our journey in vulnerability, how we have to practice being vulnerable with God and others, and how a time of singing at church can be the place where vulnerability really grows. Finally, Hunter and Michael discuss the place for “self-focused” worship songs and their amount of helpfulness when encouraging people to be vulnerable.
We've talked a lot about how worship starts with seeing God and responding to His worth-ship. Sometimes, that's easy. Sometimes… that's hard. In this episode of How to Worship, Hunter and Michael talk about those hard times, and how our worship posture should or should not change in the midst of trials. In between discussing various Psalms and the example of Jesus' life and crucifixion, Hunter and Michael recognize the importance of honesty and vulnerability in worship, regardless of whatever circumstances you may be facing. The idea of vulnerability is expansive, which is we're going to spend all of next week's episode talking about it in length!
“God created melody and music in such a way that pulls on and stirs human emotions like nothing else can.” - Davey Flowers. That quote is the thesis of this week's episode of How to Worship, where Hunter and Michael spend most of the time talking about worship music and Scripture's command to sing. They also discuss some of the thorny and challenging lyrics in some of our worship songs, the role that emotions play in our worship, and the importance of singing together in a church setting. This episode is the best of both worlds: not only do we get to hear a lot of the theological reasons for worshipping through music, but we also get to hear a lot about Michael's process and his mentality as he chooses worship sets for church.
In this BONUS EPISODE of the Coastline Covenant Podcast, Hunter and Michael reveal their Mount Rushmore's of Worship Music. In case you forgot, this is a list of four worship songs (contemporary, classic, hymn, and wild card) that Hunter and Michael love. They talk about their connection to these songs, other songs, and discuss three other Mount Rushmore's from some of their friends, co-workers, and wives. Remember: we want yours! Send your Mount Rushmore to hbabcock@coastline.family so we can discuss them on a future episode. Note: this is a BONUS episode. While it certainly does fit within our worship series, there's really no substantive content, and you can 100% skip this if you don't want to listen to two dudes yap about music. We'll have a new episode for you this Thursday that continues our How to Worship podcast series!
In the third episode of How to Worship, Hunter and Michael talk about the importance of our physical posture in worship. As we physically respond to God's worthship, we're saying a lot about what we expect God to do in our lives. Have you ever stopped to think about why you raise your hands in worship this week, or why you didn't raise your hands in worship this week? Does it actually matter? (Spoiler Alert: YES) We hope you like these episodes and we're so excited for next week's episode about music. If you want to submit your Mount Rushmore of Worship Songs (Classic, Contemporary, Hymn, Wild Card) you can email hbabcock@coastline.family and we'll read them on the podcast in a few weeks!
In the second episode of our new series How to Worship, Hunter and Michael discuss the idea of Spirit led worship by looking at a few passages that describe the Spirit in the Old and New Testament to see that Spirit led worship begins with a Spirit filled life. Michael then takes some time to talk about a few things he hopes for our community as they seek to worship and live in a more Spirit filled way. Just a note: we really hope you're listening to these episodes in order! Each episode responds to the one before it and we'll be building a lot of ideas over each conversation, so make sure you are all caught up before next week when we talk about Self-Led Worship!
Hunter and Michael are beginning a new series on the podcast called How to Worship, where they discuss just that! In this first conversation, they talk about how the default mode human is "worship" and discuss their goals for this new series.
Hunter and Shawn talk about Resilient Faith, the new teaching series here at Coastline. In between defining faith, talking about how “faith based” people are seen in culture, and the shape of this series, they discuss George Michael, cognitive behavioral therapy, and the X Files. Typical!
Very rarely do we get to sit down with an author to talk about her book. Even MORE rare is the fact that this author is our very own Jeannine Hanger! Hunter and Jeannine talk about the inspiration behind her new book, Engaging Jesus with Our Senses. You should 100% buy the book.
People believe we're going to get away for the summer... but we're back! All six Coastline staff sit down together for the first time since who knows when to talk summer, shoes, and what's coming up this Fall! Can you find all the Oasis references in the episode?
In a very typical conversation for these two, Hunter and Shawn sit down to discuss everything from Sabrina Carpenter to the sacramental nature of communion. Specifically, they dive into how we "did" communion at Coastline and how we're going to change how we do it moving forward. This conversation is meant to supplement our current teaching series, which you can find right here.
Hunter and Family Theologian Andrew Faris talk about rest, the Sabbath Law, the Pharisees, and the benefits of actually following parts of the Old Testament. Buckle up... this is a long one!
On this week's episode of the Coastline Covenant Podcast, Hunter and special guest Lloyd Gilbert talk about the need for rest to be accessible to everyone, the importance of proximity in rest, and the unique way that Hilltop Retreat and Renewal Center allows its guests to experience the rest of God that exists in them already! Hilltop Retreat and Renewal Center Three Mile and Hour God by Kosuke Koyama
We're back! After a nice long break (see what I did there?) the Coastline Covenant Podcast is BACK and better than ever. Over the next few weeks, we'll be discussing the idea of rest as we see it in Scripture, especially as a resistance to the busyness that our culture celebrates. On this first episode, Hunter and Nikki discuss Hebrews 4, the difference between the demands on men and women, as well as the way that sometimes God has to knock you down so that you might see the importance of rest. Here's the John Mark Comer sermon that's mentioned!
We decided to pause the Podcast for a bit to focus on other Coastline things, but fear not: we'll be back soon with some podcast-specific stuff we're really excited about!
Hunter and Family Theologian Andrew Faris close out the Story of God/From the Garden to Eternal City podcast series by talking about podcasts, the beauty of Scripture, the importance of church, and living like the resurrection of Christ actually happened and actually matters.
Garrick and Hunter discuss his sermon from this past Sunday, birthdays, the connection between our new creation and creation itself, friendship, and missional grants! If you want to find out more about missional grants, you can click here!
Dr. Jeannine Hanger joins Hunter and Michael to talk about Jesus' role as high priest, what it means to work out our salvation, and the first movies we saw on dates with our spouses.
Hunter, Nikki, and Garrick talk about second chance stories, recap Garrick's sermon from this past weekend (which you can listen to here), and trace themes like priesthood and kingdom throughout the Story of the Bible. Stick around until the end for some great sharing and Garrick's attempt at a new catch phrase.
As we tell the Story of God in our next teaching series, we thought it'd be fun to spend time on the podcast diving into some of the recurring themes and tracing how they're mentioned throughout the Bible so that we can understand that God's story didn't just happen... it's still happening in our lives. In this first week, Hunter and Garrick talk about John Grisham, Genesis 1:1-2:3, and how being creative is more than just a vocational call.
Hunter, Garrick, Nikki, and Richelle take some time to talk the highs and lows of Easter 2024: the pivoting, the amateur weather watching, the faithfulness of God, the passion of our Coastline Family... this Easter was unforgettable, so take some time to relive it with us. We'll see you next year at SkyZone! (Hopefully)
Hunter sits down with Family Theologian Dr. Jeannine Hanger to discuss spoilers, her sermon about surrendering to God (you can listen to that right here), and her upcoming book which is available for preorder on Amazon!
Hunter sits down with returning guest (or champion!) Melinda Hurley to talk about the upcoming food fast here at Coastline. Not only do they discuss the purpose behind fasting, how fasting or giving up anything can lead to revival, but they also provide various pragmatic tips as you consider a one, two, or three day food fast with members of the Coastline Family! For more information, check out our website. If you want to join the Zoom calls on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, click here!
Shawn and Hunter sit down with Lianne de la Peña, a Christian counselor here in the South Bay and discuss Shawn's sermon from Sunday, March 3rd. We not only really loved Shawn's message, but we talk about it for pretty much the entire episode, so if you want to listen to it before jumping into this episode, you can do so here.
Hunter sits down with Margaret Grieco, one of our prayer leads here at Coastline. They talk about honesty in prayer, how prayer becomes a place to hide or perform, and what they wish everyone knew about receiving prayer on a Sunday morning. They also talk about the Layers Prayer, which is something that we're really excited about. You can find it here and begin implementing it into your own life.
