This is a recording from 2018 with John Coe. He shares his educational experiences, views and involvement with the National Association for Primary Education since 1980. John sadly passed away earlier this year and I wanted to share this conversation so you can hear the essence of NAPE and their continued support for primary education. This is my celebration and commemoration of John who has influenced me greatly.John Coe began teaching in Essex. After primary headships, first of a small rural school and then of an urban school serving an underprivileged community; he joined the West Riding of Yorkshire authority as Inspector of Schools. His second local authority appointment extended over 16 years as Senior Adviser to Oxfordshire. In 1984 he moved into Higher Education as Course Leader of the PGCE Primary Course at the London Institute of Education. A later move to Oxford Brookes University involved him in research and both initial and in-service education. In this conversation, Kyle explores the forgotten doctrine of the beatific vision and its role in spiritual formation. He emphasizes that the beatific vision is not just a Roman Catholic doctrine, but a biblical one that is often neglected (even though it was standard in the history of Protestant theology). The beatific vision refers to the idea that in eternity, we will see God face-to-face as we will share in his glory. Kyle discusses how this vision is linked to intimacy, knowledge, and love, and how it shapes our understanding of spiritual practices. He highlights the importance of contemplation as a practice that allows us to set our gaze on God and be transformed by his presence.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Series Overview02:58 The Beatific Vision as a Biblical Doctrine09:17 The Perfection of Humanity in the Beatific Vision15:24 Drawing Near to God in the Beatific Vision19:23 The Beatific Vision as an Act of Love in God24:10 The Role of Contemplation in Spiritual Formation27:58 The Neglect of the Beatific Vision in Biblical InterpretationIn the episode I mentioned a free article I've written on the beatific vision. Spiritual Formation: An Invitation to Drawing Near

In this conversation, Kyle discusses the concept of the sanctification gap and its implications for the Christian life. Looking at Richard Lovelace's account and well as John Coe's development, Kyle attends to how we can utilize this category fruitfully in our own formation. Kyle emphasizes the importance of drawing near to God in the reality of who we are, rather than turning to oneself as a way to generate or mimic an ideal. He encourages a holistic approach to spiritual theology that incorporates insights from the broader Christian tradition.00:00 Introduction and Background05:21 The Rich Tradition of Spiritual Theology07:20 The Experiential Gap and the Importance of Drawing Near09:45 The Role of Spiritual Theology in the Christian Life14:01 Embracing the Wisdom of the Christian Tradition16:34 Moving from an Idealistic to an Evangelical Approach21:48 Recognizing Our Need for Forgiveness24:22 Navigating the Sanctification Gap in PrayerResources mentioned: Richard Lovelace, Dynamics of Spiritual Life: An Evangelical Theology of Renewal.John Coe, “Spiritual Theology: A Theological-Experiential Methodology for Bridging the Sanctification Gap” in The Journal of Spiritual Formation & Soul Care 2:1 (2009).Kyle Strobel, Formed for the Glory of God: Learning from the Spiritual Practices of Jonathan Edwards. The same comment could have been applied to John Jakob Raskob's justification for building The Empire State Building. In this book club-style conversation, John Coe and I dissect the book, The Birth of a Building. The author's book addresses how a book is conceived, financed, designed, and constructed. Kyle and his co-author John Coe write on prayer from a practical, theoretically rich approach, addressing what happens existentially when we pray. He shares that we actually are dishonest in our prayers, as if it's a performative act before God, based on our preconceived notions of how we should pray. He then focuses on the importance of watchfulness and the need for us to cultivate a life of earnest, unceasing prayer. Prayer isn't a place for us to be good or right. It isn't a place for us to perform or prove our worth. It's a place for us to be honest, present, and known--a place for us to offer ourselves and receive God. We are joined today by spiritual formation expert Dr. Kyle Strobel, who is the professor of Spiritual Theology at the Institute of Spiritual Formation at Talbot School of Theology at Biola University.  Kyle recently wrote a book along with Dr. John Coe, entitled, "Where Prayer Becomes Real: How Honesty with God Transforms Your Soul."  This is an incredible book that I spent time reading slowly and intentionally when it was released and it encouraged me deeply in my walk with Jesus. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/resilientchristian/support

How to Better Understand Christian Psychology

How are Christians to understand and undertake the discipline of psychology? This question has been of keen interest (and sometimes concern) to Christians because of the importance we place on a correct understanding of human nature. Psychology can sometimes seem disconnected from, if not antithetical to, Christian perspectives on life. How are we to understand our Christian beliefs about persons in relation to secular psychological beliefs? This revised edition of a widely appreciated text now presents five models for understanding the relationship between psychology and Christianity. All the essays and responses have been reworked and updated with some new contributors including the addition of a new perspective, the transformative view from John Coe and Todd Hall (Biola University). Also found here is David Powlison (Westminster Theological Seminary) who offers the biblical counseling model. The levels-of-explanation model is advanced by David G. Myers (Hope College), while Stanton L. Jones (Wheaton College) offers an entirely new chapter presenting the integration model. The Christian psychology model is put forth by Robert C. Roberts (Baylor University) now joined by Paul J. Watson (University of Tennesee, Chattanooga). Each of the contributors responds to the other essayists, noting points of agreement as well as problems they see. Eric L. Johnson provides a revised introduction that describes the history of Christians and psychology, as well as a conclusion that considers what might unite the five views and how a reader might evaluate the relative strengths and weaknesses of each view. Psychology and Christianity: Five Views has become a standard introductory textbook for students and professors of Christian psychology. This revision promises to keep it so. Eric L. Johnson (PhD, Michigan State University) trained as an academic psychologist and is Lawrence and Charlotte Hoover Professor of Pastoral Care at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He is the author of Foundations for Soul Care and the coeditor of God Under Fire and Christianity and Psychology: Four Views. An associate editor of the Journal of Psychology and Theology, he is the director of the Society for Christian Psychology and the Institute for Christian Psychology.

Most of you in our listening community are people who pray. Or at least people who have prayed. You may be grateful for the opportunity to come  into the presence of God. Your prayer may feel fruitful and life-giving.   Or, you may have become disillusioned when it comes to praying. You might feel like you’ve come to pray but God didn’t seem to come to listen or respond. It’s not an uncommon experience. But, in the end, you probably still want to be a person who lives in the presence of God—a person who prays. Today, I’m talking with my friend, Kyle Strobel, about a new book that he and John Coe have written called Where Prayer Becomes Real. We’ll talk about our experience of prayer and how we might enjoy the reality of God’s presence. That’s the focus of today’s episode of the Unhurried Living podcast. Kyle Strobel is the assistant professor of spiritual theology and formation at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, and is the author of Formed for the Glory of God (IVP, 2013) and co-author of Beloved Dust (Thomas Nelson, 2014). If Christian book publishing trends are any indication, contemplative spirituality is a hot topic among Christian readers — hotin the dual sense that it arouses intense interest as well as intense opposition. Proponents claim it is an ancient Christian practice capable of deepening a person’s love for God and neighbor. Opponents counterclaim that it is biblically subpar, smacks of medieval Catholicism, and opens the door to New Age mysticism. In this episode of the Influence Podcast, George P. Wood, executive editor of Influencemagazine, talks to John Coe and Kyle Strobel about whether contemplative spirituality is Christian, and if so, how. Coe and Strobel are professors at the Talbott Theological Seminary of Biola University in La Mirada, California. Both are active in the seminary’s Institute for Spiritual Formation, Coe as the director and Strobel as a teacher. They are the editors of Embracing Contemplation: Reclaiming a Christian Spiritual Practice, published by IVP Academic earlier this year.
