Episode 76: An uncommon life; living for Jesus in Japan with Katsuya + Miki Iida

The Stories Collective

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 9, 2023 53:10

We have a very special episode of The Stories Collective to share with you! Our host Sarah Schalow recently returned from a two-week mission trip serving in Osaka, Japan with J-House Church. Desert Springs has been able to foster a relationship with this church through the efforts of our Missions Pastor Jamie Engram. As a church we had sent teams of young adults for four consecutive years before coronavirus forced a hiatus. It was such a joy to be able to return for the first time since 2019! On July 25, 2023, Sarah sat down in person with Pastor Katsuya and Miki Iida to talk with them about their lives and how the Lord led them to start J-House Church. Katsuya was raised in Osaka about 20 minutes south of where J-House is now. His mother was saved when he was a young boy, and he had some exposure to church and the Christian life growing up which is very uncommon in Japan. Though he had somewhat of a Christian community he did not come to know the Lord until he moved to Canada for school. He describes living alone in Canada as a very lonely time in his life where he really began to question the purpose of his life. This experience eventually led him to place his faith and trust in Jesus. He then moved to California to pursue a Master of Divinity where he and Miki eventually met. Miki was born in the countryside of Kyushu which is about 400 miles away from Osaka. She did not have any Christian influence in her life growing up and it wasn't until she moved to California for school that she began to hear the Gospel and be around Christians. She did not immediately come to the know the Lord but after a few years her heart began to soften, and she placed her trust in Jesus. Shortly after this Katsuya and Miki began dating and eventually married when they were 27 years old in 1997. This would begin a marriage and partnership that would lead to starting J-House in Osaka just two years later. They were feeling led to be missionaries to their own people, to share the Gospel with people who were living in darkness. How do you start a church in a country that is less than 1% Christian? J-House began in Katsuya and Miki's apartment with its members being Katsuya, Miki and Katsuya's mother. You'll hear how J-House grew from three people to now a thriving community of close to 200 believers. As Katsuya describes it was one by one. Often times over the course of years. Not large groups but individuals who came to know who Jesus is and were forever changed. You'll hear so much about Katsuya and Miki's faith journeys, how they adopted their twin boys, how the Lord has blessed J-House, what ministry looks like in Japan and so much more.  J-House Church: https://www.jhouse.tv/English/  Support J-House Church: https://www.jhouse.tv/questions/donation/  Check out J-House on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/officialjhouseinsta/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D  Check out J-House on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JHouseOsaka  Questions about Missions at Desert Springs? "You always have to leave a part of yourself behind."Scott [11:49]Running away from the wind and blotting out the sun. Truth is going to have its way. The Highest version of yourself and addressing the disconnect. If you want an uncommon life you're going to have to start doing uncommon things. Diving into inner child work and finding the genesis of fear; where we decided life wasn't safe. Taking a moment to stop and taking the rocks out of your shoe. Groveling for the approval of others. Blotting out the intuition within. Pain is necessary and sweet. Dying is a part of the process. In the greatest moments of pain we learn acceptance. Letting the pain be there and not trying to curve the edges. How you respond to life is on you. Finding out why you respond to life the way you do will change the life you have. Not knowing where to go is the quickest way to find it. What If we didn't have to play this role? When all the noise dies down, who are you? When you hear about stories of generosity, it's an easy reminder of how we all want to help and do good. But being generous is more than just doing some good deeds now and then. Living a truly Uncommon Life and being generous will require more than just an occasional act of kindness. Generous people give a lot, often, and with a good heart. They are generous with their time, their resources, and their energy. And they do so to make a difference in the lives of others. No matter how generous you are, we can all take steps toward becoming more like Christ, who was the epitome of generosity. What will you do to be conspicuously generous to people and make a difference in your world?

When was the last time you looked at your monthly spending? That can be a pretty revealing way to see where you are pointing your life. Jesus said that where your treasure is, your heart is. The inverse is true, too! If you want your heart to move toward something, give part of your treasure toward that area. Imagine how many new doors and opportunities for sharing the gospel would open if each follower of Jesus placed their attention and trust toward him!

Generosity is one of the easiest ways to identify if somebody is a follower of Jesus. The earliest disciples modeled what it means to live generous lives by sharing everything they had and giving to those in need. But why is generosity so important for followers of Jesus? As followers of Jesus, the answer to "Why we give?" is best answered by looking at whose kingdom you are building with your generosity. When you live a generous life, your life and actions are not just for yourself. They are building up the kingdom and pointing people in the direction of Jesus!

When is the last time you remember being “in awe” of something? All throughout Scripture, there are stories of signs and miracles that point people to the living God and cause people to be in awe of who he is. The early church in Acts 2 was a devoted group of people who were being transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit, and all people were taking notice. How would living in awe of God transform the people around you?

When you devote yourself to creating the habits that Jesus has called his followers to have, you'll experience the benefits He has in mind. In this message one of our Elder's, Robert Barnes, dives into the subject of living an uncommon life. Many times as believers we separate our lives into two categories: The Secular and The Sacred. We learn however in this message that there is no divide in the life of a submitted son or daughter. Viewing life through the lens of these two categories actually causes division and double mindedness. Unify your heart and mind today and live the uncommon life! We love you and hope you enjoy today's message!

Logistics are important, but logistics can kill dreams. Focus on the dream and figure out the logistics as you go. One thing we have learned over the years, there is no one road map to leading an Uncommon Life. But if you stay on the sidelines, dreams will never come true. In this episode, we're talking with someone who has figured this out and is living his dreams with a “do and learn” approach that he wants to share. We're talking with Jesse Cole, who is the founder of Fans First Entertainment and owner of the Savannah Bananas. He's here to talk with us about the huge impact a fans-first approach can have. Here's a taste of his story. The previous occupants of the Savanah baseball stadium where the Bananas play were lucky to have a few hundred fans in attendance. Jesse and his wife have built a brand that packs the stadium with a waiting list in the thousands. His teams have welcomed more than one million fans to their ballparks and have been featured on MSNBC, CNN, ESPN, and Entrepreneur Magazine. After more than 10 months of lockdowns and restrictions due to COVID-19, the conversation has finally turned to mental health. This is the frontline battle that we're actively engaged in as a church every day of the week and that has been pushed to the side over these months. The Word of God has a lot to say about our mental health, and the inter-connectedness between our spiritual life and our mental and emotional well-being is indisputable. In light of this, we are devoting this coming Sunday to a panel discussion on “Pandemic Soul Care.” Roger Freeman, our Biblical Soul Care pastor, and two of his team members, Steph Nesbit and Kim Griffin, will join Pastor Todd to discuss this important topic. Entrepreneurship is about learning what works—and managing risk. If you can manage and mitigate the risk of failure and keep forging ahead, that can become a real recipe for success. The challenge is to learn and not give up too soon. When it comes to building an audience and making money on the internet, too often, people give up too soon. In episode #66, we talk with Adrian Brambila, who operates numerous online businesses by asking a simple question: how is this supposed to make money? Adrian went from making less than $30,000 at a desk job, to making 6 figures a year, to making 6 figures a month. This is passive income he can earn from anywhere in the world, which is why he and his wife have been traveling the world for the past year. Adrian Brambila learned how to do this by learning how to monetize and how to leverage the successes to create even bigger successes. Adrian first learned this lesson as he turned his passion for dance into an online audience of fans, and then turned those fans into customers willing to pay to learn from his expertise. With numerous affiliate marketing platforms and a marketing agency, Adrian is doing the work, gathering the data, and living his Uncommon Life on his terms. what you will learn in this episode: The networking power of spike ball How to make money based on how God has gifted you The role of practice and intention in becoming successful How to build a tribe of people who love what you do What number of conversions you should look for from 100 responses to an online offer How to help your audience and yourself through affiliate marketing Why small wins can add up in a big way How to stick with an audience-building platform until it pays off Why understanding money management is such a critical part of entrepreneurship

Excellence is a mindset that drives us to do better. Unfortunately, we live in a culture where mediocrity and doing things half-way have become the norm. Just getting by. Doing just enough. It's a sorry way to live. Today, I want to give you a framework for not only living an uncommon life, but for pursuing EXCELLENCE. Living the life God designed for you! Today, we're going to look at The Pursuit of Excellence: How You Can Live An Uncommon Life. Real leaders not only strive to excel, but are committed to doing MORE than what is expected of them. They're all-in and go the extra mile. Solomon once said, “whatever your hands find to do, do it with everything in your being, because you won't be able to do anything from the grave.” At the end of our lives, our legacy with either be s/he lived life to the fullest and made a mark – or – their life wasn't anything spectacular. What is Excellence? Simply stated, excellence is possessing good qualities in high degree. Says a lot about who we are, how we're perceived in the present, and how we'll be remembered in the future. Excellence positions us for unusual opportunities. Excellence is to go beyond average, climb higher than the set standard, and climb higher than others' expectations. What is Uncommon? An uncommon life is the result of uncommon results. Uncommon results are the result of uncommon actions. Uncommon actions are the result of uncommon commitment. Uncommon commitment is the result of an uncommon belief. Uncommon beliefs are the result of a refusal to be average or ordinary, and a resolve to be who God says you already are. My 3-part Challenge To You: Refuse to conduct your life in a mediocre fashion. Reject the notion that getting by and doing just enough is an acceptable mindset. Renew your personal commitment to excellence in everything you do.

I believe most people live a very common life, experience very common results, and expect very common things. I'm here to tell you average and ordinary are overrated. The status quo is NOT what you were created to know or be. On today's program, I want to share with you living uncommonly. That's right: today, I'm sharing 10 Keys For Living An Uncommon Life. Defining “Uncommon”: uncommon: not often found, not often seen, not often experienced; not oridnary. To be reamarkable, exceptional, and not ordinarily encountered. What if you possessed these qualities in every area of your life? What if when people looked at you, they saw a model they desired to emulate? I believe – with all my heart – THIS is the destiny of every son and daughter of God. I believe when we begin to live the UNCOMMON life as God designed us, we become change agents to the environment around us. When People See Us They Should See: Uncommon Lifestyle Uncommon Health Uncommon Success Uncommon Relationships Uncommon Peace and Joy Uncommon Wisdom Uncommon Knowledge Uncommon Faith Uncommon Leadership Uncommon Influence 10 Keys for Living an Uncommon Life: Know who you are Refuse to conform to the expectations of the commoner Decide you will enter the UNCOMMON class Don't do the things that most people do Do the things that most people won't do Declare your independence from the common mindset Capture a vision for your uncommon life Be willing to stand up and be different Lead Stay true to yourself and trust in God's design Closing Thoughts: Are you ready to leave the common and embrace the Uncommon Life?

We love it when we can teach clients a core principle and they take it and run with it. We love it, even more, when they teach us about being entrepreneurial and escaping the cubicle of doom. Few are doing that with more energy and outright charisma than our guest. On episode #32, we talk with Molly Rose Speed. Molly went from a corporate job she was not in love with, to running multiple businesses and side projects that are now keeping her very, very busy. She and her husband, Lance, used the principles of uncommon banking (using the cash value of a whole life insurance policy, along with the power of interest accrued on the total policy dollar amount) to fuel a truly uncommon life. Molly has leveraged her experience as a virtual assistant into two business ventures; one teaching others the basics of being an effective virtual assistant, and the other as a total package resource that lets public speakers focus on speaking, and leaving the marketing, booking and back office details to the experts. She and Lance have other side-projects going on that we'll talk about as well. We dig into at least 3 sources of residual income that Molly and Lance are using to live the uncommon life of their choosing. What You Will Learn in this Episode: Why there is no one right way to escape the cubicle of doom How using even a spare bedroom for Airbnb can make a big impact on cash flow How uncommon banking works in real life Why the thing you are good at is often what the world needs more of How to create businesses around what you are good at Practical ways to broaden your reach with technology How to manage multiple business ventures Finding the right partners for the right project

Welcome to Season Two of the Uncommon Life Podcast! We had such a wonderful experience in our first year! If you've been listening for awhile – thank you for listening and for sharing your thoughts on how to make the podcast even better in the future. If you are checking us out for the first time, welcome! In this episode, we wanted to jump right in and talk about shifting your mindset when it comes to following your dreams. When we talk with people about their hopes and dreams, 9 times out of 10, it is things they would like to accomplish in the next 1 to 3 years. But the common way people save and use money means that those dreams are more than likely deferred until retirement. We would say that's kind of a flawed system. You should start trying to do more of what you love doing right now. It's mindset over money and when you have that mindset, you take control of things in the future. This isn't magical thinking. We help people accomplish this, and we want that for you. Welcome to the Uncommon Life! What You Will Learn in This Episode: How to change your mindset and not put things off until retirement Facilitating your dreams for the present without stealing from your future Doing now what God has designed you to do How to embrace and invest in what you are passionate about Why productivity and purpose lead to a happier, healthier retirement Why, even in retirement, you don't need to think of your income as fixed The importance of taking time now to think about hopes and dreams How planning for your dreams can happen today, whatever your age Why the stock market is not the best place to look for passive residual income
