What if the problem isn't that God has left you—but that he's leading you somewhere you never expected to go? Few experiences are more unsettling for a Christian than the feeling that God has become distant. You pray, read Scripture, attend church, and try to stay faithful, yet the warmth and certainty you once felt seem to disappear. When that happens, many of us immediately assume we've done something wrong. We begin searching for the mistake, wondering why God feels absent and how we can get back to where we used to be. In the first episode of our short summer series, Beach Reads for Real Life, listen in as John Tinnin talks about the book When God Seems Distant: Surprising Ways God Deepens Our Faith and Draws Us Near by Kyle Strobel & John Coe. The authors challenge the assumption that the Christian life should be a steady climb from one spiritual high to the next. Instead, they show how God often does some of his deepest work in seasons of uncertainty, silence, and longing—times when we can't rely on feelings and are invited to trust him in new ways. What makes this book so refreshing is its honesty. Rather than offering quick fixes or formulas for getting God back, it gives language to feelings many believers experience but rarely discuss. The authors invite us to stop treating the spiritual life like a self-improvement project and begin seeing it as a relationship that often grows through vulnerability, dependence, and surrender. For anyone who has ever wondered why God feels far away, this book offers both comfort and a different way of understanding the journey. In this interview, Spencer Dalke sits down with theologian Kyle Strobel to explore the often confusing experience of spiritual dryness and seasons when God feels absent. Drawing from his own story and the wisdom of the Puritans and figures like Jonathan Edwards, Strobel explains how these periods—often described as “spiritual desertion”—are not signs of failure or abandonment, but part of God's work in deepening faith, exposing hidden sin, and teaching humility. He challenges the common assumption that spiritual maturity is measured by emotional highs, instead pointing listeners toward a life of steady faith, honest prayer, and dependence on God even when feelings fade. The conversation offers a pastoral vision of spiritual formation that centers on abiding in Christ in weakness, learning to bring one's true self before God, and discovering that even in the desert, God is at work drawing believers into deeper love and trust. God's consolation—and desolation! —as gifts to us. Responding humbly to God's gifts. How to carry on in seasons of God's desolation. “At a certain point, the Lord leads us into the desert to show us what's in our hearts. If you think all spiritual formation is you doing spiritual practices, that's going to reveal that you're trying to live the Christian life in your own strength.” “In all of these different experiences, the answer is the same: Draw near to Jesus. It's never trying to get somewhere; it's always saying, ‘If this is where you have me, Lord, I am yours here.'” Featured work: When God Seems Distant: Surprising Ways God Deepens Our Faith and Draws Us Near Connect with Kyle Strobel on Substack. What do we do when God no longer feels as close as He used to feel? Many sincere believers experience seasons when prayer feels empty, Scripture feels quiet, and God seems strangely absent. For leaders especially, those seasons can feel confusing, discouraging, and even shameful. In this episode of the Unhurried Living Podcast, Alan Fadling sits down with theologian and spiritual formation professor Kyle Strobel to discuss the new book When God Seems Distant, coauthored with John Coe. Together, they explore: Why spiritual dryness is a normal part of mature faith The danger of equating spiritual feelings with God’s presence How suffering and helplessness can become places of formation The subtle ways we avoid God—even through our spirituality Why love, rather than striving, is what truly transforms us This conversation offers a compassionate and deeply hopeful vision for anyone walking through uncertainty, weariness, disappointment, or spiritual distance. Whether you are a pastor, leader, spiritual director, or simply someone longing to remain near to God in difficult seasons, this episode offers wisdom and encouragement for the journey. Feelings Aren't Faith God's presence is not measured by emotional experiences. Mature faith learns to trust God's promises even when He feels distant. Weakness Reveals Need Spiritual growth happens when we recognize how much we need God's forgiveness, grace, and transforming work. Host Steve Cuss and Dr. Kyle Strobel disrupt self-help versions of spirituality and call us back to genuine encounters with Christ. Together we explore how hidden dynamics like assumptions, reactivity, and self-reliance often sabotage spiritual formation—and why cultivating watchfulness in prayer and scripture is the antidote. Drawing from Colossians 4:2, early evangelical practices, and personal stories, Dr. Strobel shows how honesty about our emotions in real time opens the door to true transformation. Is Discipleship the Wrong Paradigm for the Church Today? | A Conversation with Kyle Strobel Kyle Strobel is a theologian at Biola University focused on spiritual theology, and he is the head of the Institute of Spiritual Formation at Talbot School of Theology. He's also a teaching elder at his church. He, along with John Coe, has written what I consider to be one of the best books on prayer titled Where Prayer Becomes Real. Earlier this year via his Substack, Kyle sent out a blog titled “Why Discipleship Doesn't Work,” which pointed to the release of a mini-course on his Substack on “Reimagining Discipleship.” In it, Kyle questioned the entire discipleship framework that has been re-emphasized for the last 30+ years. Kyle's major contention is that the framework of disciple and discipleship is a pre-Pentecost approach to following Jesus, it's not found in the New Testament after Jesus' ascension, and it is thus not a paradigm the church is meant to follow. I resonated with a lot of what Kyle had to say but also found several things where I think he overstates his case. So we decided to record a conversation exploring the question of whether or not discipleship is the mission of the church today and the paradigm for spiritual growth. In today's conversation, we received wisdom and insight from Dr. Steve Porter about all things spiritual formation and transformation – in personal, pastoral and church contexts. Steve's work at the intersection of philosophy, theology and psychology means that he brings multilayered insight into the conversation around growth and transformation. Shaped and informed by the spirituality of Paul and the insight of folks like Dallas Willard and Eugene Peterson, Steve reminds us of the spiritual realities available to us as persons in Christ. He encourages us to be aware of God's presence, engaging in spiritual practices as windows that open ourselves to God. He also shares how we can internalize the love of God and how we as the church can support one another in making the invisible love of God visible and tangible, especially if we have struggled to experience that love in human relationships. We're excited that Steve will be joining us at Regent in the summer to teach a class on Cultivating Formation-Minded Pastors and Churches (July 21-25). We'd love for you to join us!BioDr. Steven L. When I thought about doing a series on Mysteries of Faith, one of the very first topics that came to my mind was prayer. Now, I've been a Christian since I was 5. Prayer has always been a part of my life. But if I'm honest, there are elements about prayer that I always just accepted as true, nodded my head at, and then moved on with the general way I've always prayed. As I got older though, I started to wonder about some things the way I imagine many of you wonder about prayer too. “Do my prayers really move God to act?” “Is there a proper way to pray?” “Why doesn't God seem to answer all of my prayers?” I knew of prayer as talking with God, I even would say I knew why God wanted me to pray, but there were so many spiritual elements of prayer that were still so mysterious to me. Prayer is a completely spiritual practice. With Bible-reading, we're at least engaging with a book. Prayer, on the other hand, is totally spiritual so I was excited to dive into some of the more deeply spiritual elements of prayer with my friend Dr. Kyle Strobel. Kyle Strobel is Associate Professor of Spiritual Theology at Talbot and author of the book Where Prayer Becomes Real: How Honesty with God Transforms Your Soul. Kyle has been on this podcast a few times in the past, once to talk specifically about his book on prayer, but today I invited him on to pull back the curtain on some of the more mysterious elements of prayer – what is really happening spiritually when we pray. Have we made spritual disciplines a lifehack? On this episode of TheoDisc, Kenny's guest Kyle Strobel, invites us to consider that importing ancient practices of "spiritual formation" or "spritual disciplines" into our current cultural moment isn't straightforward, and we need to be wary of the propensity in our time to market or refashion our spirituality into a cheaper, individualised, idealised version of what was originally intended. Kyle has written a post on a 'rule of life', which is what most of the conversation centres around. See the link for Kyle's substack below. Honesty with God - What Can God Hear? In this part of my conversation with Kyle Strobel we explore what it looks like to be honest with God, the very theme of the book Where Prayer Becomes Real. As Kyle says, "Prayer is the place we draw near in the truth to offer ourselves to the Lord." Being honest with God depends our view of God and one way to think about who God is, is to think about what God can hear. Church Life that Supports Spiritual Formation In this part of my conversation with Kyle Strobel, we consider the longing for depth of meaning and belonging. Prayer is not a place to be perfect; it's a place to be honest. Habakkuk begins by pouring his heart out to God, lamenting the injustice and wickedness he sees. This kind of raw honesty can be uncomfortable, but God wants us to bring our whole selves to Him in prayer—the good, the bad, and the ugly. In this episode, Whit and Casey explore the cultural context of Habakkuk, praying honest prayers, God's relationship to evil, and our hope for the future. Looking at Richard Lovelace's account and well as John Coe's development, Kyle attends to how we can utilize this category fruitfully in our own formation. We can be intoxicated by the power of Jesus and yet be hostile to his hard Commands. “I never ever really knew you; get out of my face, you doers of the very opposite of my teachings.” They believe that they know Jesus, but apparently they never gave him a chance to know them (“I never really knew you”), that is, they never gave him a chance to come into personal contact with their innermost life (the force of the biblical word “know”). It is strangely possible to serve and even to glorify Christ and yet in one's own personal life not to obey him. The fact that Jesus says “many” will present their christocentric-charismatic credentials at the Judgment and that even then they will not get in should be frightening to us all. It means that just as a loving manner (sheep's clothing) is not necessarily the real item, so a Christ-glorifying ministry (“in your name, … in your name.… in your name”) is not always the real thing either.” - Dale Bruner “If I ever reach Heaven I expect to find three wonders there: first, to meet some I had not thought to see there; second, to miss some I had thought to meet there; and third, the greatest wonder of all, to find myself there.” - John Newton “Obedience to Jesus' words is not so much protection from troubles as protection in them, just as rock under a house does not shield from storms but supports during them” - Dale Bruner The teaching of the Sermon on the Mount is not meant to be admired but to be obeyed - RT France “The focus is on my ability, my creativity, and my potential. These become the pistons driving the engine of self (resulting, Jesus tells us, in the eternal loss of self). No place for weakness exists in this view of reality. More important, no place exists for God. We don't reject God outright, but we retain the god of Deism, who once did some powerful things but is generally detached from our day-to-day lives. So instead of abiding, we pray for God to give us some of his power. Instead of growing into him who is our head (Eph. 4:15), we ask him to give us some magic (“Just make me stop sinning,” “Just make these temptations go away,” and so on). Instead of entering into the way of weakness, we try to use God to become something powerful.” - Kyle Strobel and Jamin Goggin

Most of us have times when we get distracted or discouraged by our attempts at prayer. We look for the "right" words or method to pray, and then are frustrated when we feel we've failed. Ed Stetzer sits down with Kyle Strobel to talk about prayer. They'll talk about how we can trade feelings of distraction or inadequacy for a real, authentic and powerful communication with God.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Everyone feels awkward praying. Performance anxiety and perfectionism can paralyze us in prayer. Praying is not about us, it's about Christ for us. Katie Koplin and Gretchen Ronnevik talk about wrestling through prayer, and finding rest in Christ. They talk about how our failure is a gift, and how the Holy Spirit is interpreting and correcting our prayers. This upsidedown kingdom of God's puts his faithfulness as primary, not ours, and that is never more apparent than in prayer, when the lavishness of grace pushes us toward good works. We do fail, and it will be awkward, but because of Christ, failure is never the end. Amy Fritz is the host of the Untangled Faith podcast, a mom, and wife, with a heart for those hurt by leaders they trust. Today, Amy shares how her somewhat charmed upbringing was shattered when her mom died suddenly, how she ran away to Middle Tennessee, and discovering that all was not as it seemed at a prominent Christian organization. Dealing with the sense of betrayal took time and ultimately gave her compassion for others dealing with the trauma from spiritual abuse. Amy's story reminds us that God is still good even when the leaders who use his name aren't. Listen to Amy's story in your favorite podcast player now! Stories Amy shared: Being a mom and wife in Middle Tennessee Growing up in Minnesota in a new Christian family Feeling like the trophy student and model Christian Losing her mom to brain cancer during an MRI Struggling with the problem of pain and grief in the world Running away to Middle Tennessee and joining The Lampo Group Getting a warning from another wife early on Realizing that there were problems at the company The social media interactions that raised red flags The moment the spiritual abuse dawned on her husband Noticing her friend had disappeared Leaving the company with no job ahead of time. Being harassed by his former company What Amy has learned about herself after going through heartbreak Great quotes from Amy: I had such a golden growing up experience that I did not see a lot of terribly painful things. All the truthful things in the world, they don't stand up next to sitting next to somebody and letting them grieve. We talk a lot about sin nature but don't seem to apply it to ourselves. Narcissism is in the blood of our churches. I knew God would provide for us. What exactly is contemplation and contemplative prayer? Is it new age nonsense or does it lie at the very heart of the Christian life? And if it's the latter, how exactly does the average Joe "do" it?! In this episode Brandon interviews Dr. Kyle Strobel from Biola's Talbot School of Theology. Dr. Strobel brings an amazing wealth of knowledge about the history of contemplation in the Christian tradition and especially in the protestant tradition. This is the third of a series of conversations on the topic of contemplation with experts and practitioners from across the Christian and religious spectrum. Here's a list books that were mentioned on the show.
