In today's conversation, we received wisdom and insight from Dr. Steve Porter about all things spiritual formation and transformation – in personal, pastoral and church contexts. Steve's work at the intersection of philosophy, theology and psychology means that he brings multilayered insight into the conversation around growth and transformation. Shaped and informed by the spirituality of Paul and the insight of folks like Dallas Willard and Eugene Peterson, Steve reminds us of the spiritual realities available to us as persons in Christ. He encourages us to be aware of God's presence, engaging in spiritual practices as windows that open ourselves to God. He also shares how we can internalize the love of God and how we as the church can support one another in making the invisible love of God visible and tangible, especially if we have struggled to experience that love in human relationships. We're excited that Steve will be joining us at Regent in the summer to teach a class on Cultivating Formation-Minded Pastors and Churches (July 21-25). We'd love for you to join us!BioDr. Steven L. Porter is the Senior Research Fellow and Executive Director of the Martin Institute for Christianity and Culture at Westmont College. He is also an affiliate professor of theology and spiritual formation at Biola University's Institute for Spiritual Formation and Rosemead School of Psychology. Dr. Porter earned his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Southern California under the mentorship of Dallas Willard and holds an M.Phil. in philosophical theology from the University of Oxford. When I thought about doing a series on Mysteries of Faith, one of the very first topics that came to my mind was prayer. Now, I've been a Christian since I was 5. Prayer has always been a part of my life. But if I'm honest, there are elements about prayer that I always just accepted as true, nodded my head at, and then moved on with the general way I've always prayed. As I got older though, I started to wonder about some things the way I imagine many of you wonder about prayer too. “Do my prayers really move God to act?” “Is there a proper way to pray?” “Why doesn't God seem to answer all of my prayers?” I knew of prayer as talking with God, I even would say I knew why God wanted me to pray, but there were so many spiritual elements of prayer that were still so mysterious to me. Prayer is a completely spiritual practice. With Bible-reading, we're at least engaging with a book. Prayer, on the other hand, is totally spiritual so I was excited to dive into some of the more deeply spiritual elements of prayer with my friend Dr. Kyle Strobel. Kyle Strobel is Associate Professor of Spiritual Theology at Talbot and author of the book Where Prayer Becomes Real: How Honesty with God Transforms Your Soul. Kyle has been on this podcast a few times in the past, once to talk specifically about his book on prayer, but today I invited him on to pull back the curtain on some of the more mysterious elements of prayer – what is really happening spiritually when we pray. Have we made spritual disciplines a lifehack? On this episode of TheoDisc, Kenny's guest Kyle Strobel, invites us to consider that importing ancient practices of "spiritual formation" or "spritual disciplines" into our current cultural moment isn't straightforward, and we need to be wary of the propensity in our time to market or refashion our spirituality into a cheaper, individualised, idealised version of what was originally intended. Kyle has written a post on a 'rule of life', which is what most of the conversation centres around. See the link for Kyle's substack below. Honesty with God - What Can God Hear? In this part of my conversation with Kyle Strobel we explore what it looks like to be honest with God, the very theme of the book Where Prayer Becomes Real. As Kyle says, "Prayer is the place we draw near in the truth to offer ourselves to the Lord." Being honest with God depends our view of God and one way to think about who God is, is to think about what God can hear. Kyle Strobel is a systematic theologian who teaches spiritual theology for Talbot's Institute for Spiritual Formation and Spiritual Formation Focus programs. His areas of interest include systematic theology, Jonathan Edwards, spiritual formation and prayer. Church Life that Supports Spiritual Formation In this part of my conversation with Kyle Strobel, we consider the longing for depth of meaning and belonging. Many people are coming to recognize the thinness of their busy lives, which lack any real sense of transcendence, any space for self-examination and reflection, and any deep experience of belonging. We need a way of life that creates space for real connection with God and with others. The Messiness of Spiritual Formation This is part 1 of my conversation with Kyle Strobel. One of the major themes of this episode is the messiness of prayer and the messiness of spiritual formation. We explore why this is and that the remedy is NOT just adding spiritual disciplines to your life. Kyle Strobel is a systematic theologian who teaches spiritual theology for Talbot's Institute for Spiritual Formation and Spiritual Formation Focus programs. Prayer is not a place to be perfect; it's a place to be honest. Habakkuk begins by pouring his heart out to God, lamenting the injustice and wickedness he sees. This kind of raw honesty can be uncomfortable, but God wants us to bring our whole selves to Him in prayer—the good, the bad, and the ugly. In this episode, Whit and Casey explore the cultural context of Habakkuk, praying honest prayers, God's relationship to evil, and our hope for the future. TEACHING SERIES: Citizen SERMON TITLE: Speaking Truth To Power BY: Tim Chilvers DATE: Sunday 2 June 2024 BIBLE PASSAGES: Daniel 4:1-3 (Daniel 4 & 5) EXCERPT: Who is the most powerful person you know? What does it mean to be ‘powerful'? And how can we use that power in a healthy and good way, rather than a destructive, self-centred way? “We are easily drawn in by energy, drive, charisma and what seems like success. But how can we tell if what we are seeing is healthy, biblical leadership?” (Marcus Honeysett) “This is the first temptation of power: We view the problem as “out there”…but we ignore the problem in our own hearts….Part of being created in God's image is having the power to shape the world around us.” (Kyle Strobel and Jamin Goggin) “With great power comes great responsibility” (Spiderman) Welcome: What's true of Riverside Church when we meet together in-person is still true of us online. In this conversation, Kyle discusses the concept of the sanctification gap and its implications for the Christian life. Looking at Richard Lovelace's account and well as John Coe's development, Kyle attends to how we can utilize this category fruitfully in our own formation. Kyle emphasizes the importance of drawing near to God in the reality of who we are, rather than turning to oneself as a way to generate or mimic an ideal. He encourages a holistic approach to spiritual theology that incorporates insights from the broader Christian tradition.00:00 Introduction and Background05:21 The Rich Tradition of Spiritual Theology07:20 The Experiential Gap and the Importance of Drawing Near09:45 The Role of Spiritual Theology in the Christian Life14:01 Embracing the Wisdom of the Christian Tradition16:34 Moving from an Idealistic to an Evangelical Approach21:48 Recognizing Our Need for Forgiveness24:22 Navigating the Sanctification Gap in PrayerResources mentioned: Richard Lovelace, Dynamics of Spiritual Life: An Evangelical Theology of Renewal.John Coe, “Spiritual Theology: A Theological-Experiential Methodology for Bridging the Sanctification Gap” in The Journal of Spiritual Formation & Soul Care 2:1 (2009).Kyle Strobel, Formed for the Glory of God: Learning from the Spiritual Practices of Jonathan Edwards. New Churches Q&A Podcast with Daniel Im, Ed Stetzer, and Todd Adkins
Host Ed Stetzer returns with writer, speaker, and professor Kyle Strobel to dive more deeply into the leadership challenges of church planting. Tune in to discover the profound paradox of leading from weakness as you make much of Christ and abide in His strength.
Listen along as we look at the close of the Sermon on the Mount. Notes//Quotes: Matthew 7:21-29 Deut 30:15-20 ”We learn at least that it is possible to work for Jesus and yet not live under him. We can be intoxicated by the power of Jesus and yet be hostile to his hard Commands. “I never ever really knew you; get out of my face, you doers of the very opposite of my teachings.” They believe that they know Jesus, but apparently they never gave him a chance to know them (“I never really knew you”), that is, they never gave him a chance to come into personal contact with their innermost life (the force of the biblical word “know”). It is strangely possible to serve and even to glorify Christ and yet in one's own personal life not to obey him. The fact that Jesus says “many” will present their christocentric-charismatic credentials at the Judgment and that even then they will not get in should be frightening to us all. It means that just as a loving manner (sheep's clothing) is not necessarily the real item, so a Christ-glorifying ministry (“in your name, … in your name.… in your name”) is not always the real thing either.” - Dale Bruner “If I ever reach Heaven I expect to find three wonders there: first, to meet some I had not thought to see there; second, to miss some I had thought to meet there; and third, the greatest wonder of all, to find myself there.” - John Newton “Obedience to Jesus' words is not so much protection from troubles as protection in them, just as rock under a house does not shield from storms but supports during them” - Dale Bruner The teaching of the Sermon on the Mount is not meant to be admired but to be obeyed - RT France “The focus is on my ability, my creativity, and my potential. These become the pistons driving the engine of self (resulting, Jesus tells us, in the eternal loss of self). No place for weakness exists in this view of reality. More important, no place exists for God. We don't reject God outright, but we retain the god of Deism, who once did some powerful things but is generally detached from our day-to-day lives. So instead of abiding, we pray for God to give us some of his power. Instead of growing into him who is our head (Eph. 4:15), we ask him to give us some magic (“Just make me stop sinning,” “Just make these temptations go away,” and so on). Instead of entering into the way of weakness, we try to use God to become something powerful.” - Kyle Strobel and Jamin Goggin

Everyone feels awkward praying. Performance anxiety and perfectionism can paralyze us in prayer. Praying is not about us, it's about Christ for us. Katie Koplin and Gretchen Ronnevik talk about wrestling through prayer, and finding rest in Christ. They talk about how our failure is a gift, and how the Holy Spirit is interpreting and correcting our prayers. This upsidedown kingdom of God's puts his faithfulness as primary, not ours, and that is never more apparent than in prayer, when the lavishness of grace pushes us toward good works. We do fail, and it will be awkward, but because of Christ, failure is never the end. "Prayer is not a place to be good. Prayer is a place to be honest." Author and speaker Kyle Strobel shares personal experience and helpful insights from his book, “Where Prayer Becomes Real: How Honesty with God Transforms Your Soul.”
Prayer isn't a place for us to be good or right. It isn't a place for us to perform or prove our worth. It's a place for us to be honest, present, and known--a place for us to offer ourselves and receive God. We are joined today by spiritual formation expert Dr. Kyle Strobel, who is the professor of Spiritual Theology at the Institute of Spiritual Formation at Talbot School of Theology at Biola University. Kyle recently wrote a book along with Dr. John Coe, entitled, "Where Prayer Becomes Real: How Honesty with God Transforms Your Soul." This is an incredible book that I spent time reading slowly and intentionally when it was released and it encouraged me deeply in my walk with Jesus. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/resilientchristian/support

Kyle's story reminds us that our tradition is rich if we only take the time to mine it. Listen to Kyle's story today! It took me wrestling profoundly with myself to open up others people's lives. The journey to God is a journey to love. In this book, Pastor Jamin Goggin and theology professor Kyle Strobel invite readers on a journey to uncover Jesus' seemingly contradictory way to power: weakness. Why do so many rock-star pastors implode under the spotlight? Why do modern-day churches become so entangled in growing their brand that they lose sight of their true purpose? Because, according to Jamin Goggin and Kyle Strobel, Christians have succumbed to the temptations of power and forgotten Jesus' seemingly contradictory path to power—first giving it up. In The Way of the Dragon or the Way of the Lamb, Goggin and Strobel paint a richly biblical vision of power through weakness and offers a compelling vision of the way of Jesus that will challenge both individual believers and the church as a whole. Our prayer and hope is that churches in Arizona would be full of leaders and pastors who are committed to the Jesus-way of power and that pastors would recognize where the idols of power and prestige have gotten a foothold into our affections for Christ and leadership decisions so that we might turn toward embracing weakness.
