fter more than 110 days in the hospital and Gracie approaching her 98th surgery, this episode explores what real faith looks like in the trenches of caregiving. I share two jaw-dropping moments with Gracie—responses to a psychiatrist that left us all speechless—and unpack what it means to trust “El Roi,” the God who sees, even when our view is blocked by suffering, hospital walls, or exhaustion. We talk about the daily grind of hospital life, how caregivers can practice faithful stewardship of their minds and bodies, and yes—how even pancakes can test your resolve. I also share how Scripture, hymns, and daily devotional habits have carried me through this long stretch. If you've ever wondered how to find hope when the days blur together, or what caregiving looks like with 98 surgeries behind you, this is the one to hear. Faith in suffering, joy in hardship, and the daily resolve to keep walking—these aren't theories. This is the day the Lord has made—even here. Includes reflections on: • Christian caregiving • Psalm 118 & the Hallel Psalms • Hospital survival strategies • Marriage and disability • Devotional insights for caregivers • Singing hymns through suffering • The joy of the Lord in hardship

The Artistic Expression of War to Improve the Environment and Re-establish Masculine Identity with Bran Symondson Bran Symondson is a British photographer, artist, philanthropist, entrepreneur, and art collector. He is considered to be one of the most acclaimed reportage photographers of the 21st Century. Bran started his career in the 1990s working alongside renowned photographers such as Gavin Bond, David La Chapelle, and Nadav Kander. In 2004, Bran started the selection process to join the British Army Special Forces Reserves. After completing pre-deployment training in 2007, Bran was deployed to Afghanistan, Helmand Province. During the tour in Afghanistan, Bran continued to capture images on his camera of the civilians he met along the way, collating images of the land and people - he vowed to himself he will create some inspiring art if he ever made it back to London. He documented his life-changing experiences under gunfire with a simple Canon G9 camera, these significant images culminated in his first show “The Best View of Heaven is from Hell”. The photographs Bran took of young Afghanistan boys holding decorated AK47s with butterfly stickers and flowers gave Bran the idea to embellish the assault rifle with money and butterflies. It was during his last tour of duty training the Afghan National Police (ANP), which now patrols this province, that Symondson became fascinated with the force's distinctive ethos. So he returned as a civilian photographer “embedded” with them to document something far more unique than the endless fields of opium. The Sunday Times decided to commission Bran to go back to Afghanistan and re-shoot the images as a civilian photographer. After being awarded the 2011 Amnesty International Media Award for his photograph “Lost Boys”, Symondson decided to develop the concept of his photographs further and he began to work on the sell-out show “AKA Peace”. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/crypto-hipster-podcast/support

While standing on Pier 21 looking towards The harbor you can see pelican Island across the ship channel. Pelican Island is mostly man-made from dredge mud pulled from what is now the Houston, Galveston, and Texas City ship channels.  While looking west, you may be able to spot the masts of the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa at the Galveston in Historic Seaport. If you look to the east, you will see the ocean star offshore drilling rig and museum. Behind you on the grass, you will find the official historic marker for the Texas Navy.

I'll tell you about a few things to see along this short section of road including a couple short, easy hikes and the only place to catch a prehistoric fish in the park. But most importantly I'll tell you which vantage points are best to see both sets of falls from and tell you where you can actually sit on the famous Thomas Moran bench and take a great picture and explain the history behind that bench and how that very spot was synonymous in getting Yellowstone Park voted into existence as the first national park in the world. As well as a couple easy trails to see the lower falls without all the people and a great place to get right down next to the massive, surging and beautiful Yellowstone River where you can actually get your feet wet if you like. And as usual, I throw in a couple interesting death stories as well as a story about a couple of Italians who were probably going to get killed by a monster Grizzly bear before I intervened and possibly saved their dumb asses.

There are plans to turn Sydney’s CBD into a fortress for New Year’s Eve, new government COVID-safe plans reveal.Every December 31 since 1976, Sydney Harbour has been lit up by an increasingly expensive and impressive fireworks spectacular which attracts tens of thousands to the city. But as many look forward to saying goodbye to the train wreck of a year that has been 2020, only a select few will be given access to this year’s event, with the NSW Government limiting both entry and vantage points. It is understood tickets will be needed to gain access, with The Daily Telegraph reporting that the best viewing points will be reserved exclusively for frontline workers and firefighters to thank them for their service to the state this year. With bushfires and COVID-19 having an unprecedented impact on the state, the NSW Government is looking at a ballot process to award spots to a limited number of spots to view the fireworks from. The 9pm fireworks have also been cancelled with only the midnight spectacular going ahead. Those who miss out on a ticket, however, will be able to view the fireworks from the comfort of their lounge room.“2020 has been a tough year for everyone,” NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian told The Daily Telegraph.“New Year’s Eve celebrations will be a symbol of hope and optimism for next year.“It is also an opportunity to thank people across NSW who have stepped up during this difficult time.“Key areas of the Harbour will be reserved for frontline workers only.”Aside from vantage points, it is understood that access to the wider CBD will also be restricted, with ticketholders to pre-booked venues and hospitality workers needing to also apply for a permit to access the city. While more details on the New Year’s Eve plans are set to be determined this month, it is likely the Sydney Opera House, Mrs Macquarie’s Chair and Campbells Cove may be the locations the Government will dedicate for frontline workers.

Everest Base Camp Trek-Best View Of Everest-Kala Patthar-5643 Meters Exhausting, especially after a roundtrip trek to Everest Base Camp the previous day, a hike up Kala Patthar could be the real highlight of your EBC adventure. This was my second EBC trek in four years so I was familiar with the challenge of walking to base camp, then turning around back to Gorakshep for a night's rest before trekking up Kala Patthar. As much as I love the mountains and the challenge, I'm not particularly fond of walking in the dark, which is what is required should you desire to make it to the top for sunrise. It's all of course worth it once you're up there, staring at the highest mountains on the planet and the expanse of the Khumbu Valley. Ama Dablam peak literally looks like a painting with it's surrounding backdrop. I've met people who were too tired to climb Kala Patthar after the long day to reach Everest Base Camp. Best View in Vietnam-Cat Ba Island Adventure Cat Ba Island was a nice easy little getaway from Hanoi on my last visit, too bad the weather sucked! I mean the purpose was mostly to get out into Han La Bay, do some kayaking, stop by Monkey Island, all the cool stuff I had heard about. Instead I settled for a little scooter trip out to Hospital Cave and Cannon Fort for some sightseeing. The seafood was great and I think a bargain compared with Hanoi. As I mentioned in the video I've heard some bad things about some of the floating restaurants so be careful. You really are putting yourself in a vulnerable position when you rely on a restaurant in the middle of the bay to arrange for a boat to get you back to the shore. The area of the town where I mentioned has some great local style restaurants. Nothing against the restaurants on the main street facing the ocean but if you want more of a local feel get away from the main drag. The hotels were cheap, only $12/night for an ocean view on the 7th floor. The little boat cruise I took in the harbour was fun and could be added on as an extra before or after you go to Han La Bay. You can also hire them to take you to Monkey Island. Next time for sure I'm getting out on a kayak! Thanks so much for watching. I appreciate all of the positive feedback. Daily Devotion:   The most beautiful view is waiting for you at the top of the mountain, but first you must get there!  Many times we miss out on our reward because we quit before we get to the top.  Don't let yourself quit today.  Strength is built during the race.  Endurance is discovered in the climb.  Enjoy the journey.  Romans 5:3-5, "We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love." "As you get older, you find out that true happiness is not in how much you make or how many degrees you have or how big your house is or how fancy your car is. It’s finding peace and joy and a calmness in your life that will soon become the most important thing to you. Your family are what matters to you. Things that are of quality not of quantity." — Unknown

This week Libby Purves is joined by Bran Symondson, Joan Woodcock, Greg Hicks and Phillip King. Bran Symondson is a serving soldier in the British Army Reserve. Whilst on a six month tour of Afghanistan he became fascinated by the Afghan National Police (ANP), their ethos and their daily existence in the war with the Taliban. When he was given the opportunity to return and document these characters as a civilian photographer in 2010, with the Sunday Times, he was able to capture a unique perspective on the current conflict. An exhibition: The Best View of Heaven is from Hell is at Idea Generation Gallery, London E2. Joan Woodcock was sixteen when she began her nursing career as a cadet nurse, a career that spanned over forty years in NHS nursing. Working on hospital wards, casualty units and out in the community, as well as prison and a police unit dealing with sexual assault, Joan has seen it all. 'Matron Knows Best - the true story of a 1960s NHS nurse' is published by Headline. The actor Greg Hicks plays King Lear in the Royal Shakespeare Company's season at the Roundhouse. A stalwart of the RSC and classical theatre in general, he's also a talented musician, playing a mean blues harp and is an expert in the Brazilian martial art form of 'capoeira'. Phillip King is a sculptor. He was tutored by the legendary Anthony Caro and worked as assistant to Henry Moore. He represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1968 and was President of the Royal Academy from 1990 to 1999. Born in Tunis in 1934, his work is influenced by the sense of strong colour and light that he remembers from living there. His show of new and old work is currently at Flowers Gallery, to coincide with the Royal Academy's 'Modern British Sculpture', both in London.
