Here are 10 quick things you can do… *Important point: It's hard to have absolute control/monitoring on YouTube. --> Kids can switch accounts, switch browsers 1. Talk and watch - obvious but important. Talk to your kids and watch with them. The thing about YouTube is that most people and kids like to share. 2. Turn on restricted mode - hides comments, filters some bad content (though not all of it) 3. Subscriptions are helpful - gives you a focused list instead of a never ending worm hole of watching. 4. Turn off auto play. 5. Delete app from phone. 6. I recommend no devices in bedroom at night for students. How do we redeem YouTube? 1. There are some AWESOME channels out there! 2. Watch things together on youtube - disc golf, civil war, documentaries... 3. YouTube is FUN and thats good! YouTube can be funny and thats good - can be a great place to learn. 4. Cool to see creativity on YouTube of content creators. The Couch Time Podcast Life After High School with Special Guest: Dr Chad Everhart 03.08.21 00:00 | Intro 02:38 | Life After High School: State of the Union - Between the years of 18 & 25, young men and women need MORE discipleship, not less. - This is an age range where they are really trying to figure out what they believe and are wrestling with all the different questions that are coming at them. - The worldview that they develop in these years will be primarily what they will believe for the rest of their lives. - This age range is almost like starting the pre-school years over again. 06:16 | The Drop Off - Parents can often drop off their kids and think that just because they were raised in a Christian environment that everything will just be fine. - Your kids at this age, by and large, love and value you more than you might realize. They care about your opinion. 09:28 | What are some of the factors in students that thrive spiritually in college? - The kids that have parents daily involved spiritually in their life. It's what their parents are investing in them, not just a "Sunday" thing. - Their faith has been tested before. They've wrestled with hard questions and know what they believe and how it applies to their life. - They are prepared and resolute. They know and are practicing spiritual disciplines. They know what church they will be a part of. They've been connected to the campus ministry. And they are committed to doing/being a part of all these things. 15:48 | The sobering truth - Most parents do not think about or ask about where their student should go to church. - When you do not communicate or asking about a church, then it is impressed on them that church is an optional thing. - With COVID, it's actually really easy to check out churches and their services online, so take advantage of that! 19:00 | What should parents and students be looking for in a church? - A big issue can be is that parents actually put pressure for their student to come home every weekend and not really be able to plug into the community that they are in. - It's important for them to be a part of a church that can minister well to their age group. - The 18-25 age demographic is the black hole of just about every church in America. - Look for a church that has 1) good theology, 2) meaningful worship, 3) good community. 25:46 | Is your student really a Christian? - You really need to figure out if they are REALLY Christians and not just a "church kid". That is going to play a lot into expectations and how you approach this whole thing. THE COUCH TIME PODCAST Is It Just A Game? 02.01.21 Today on The Couch Time Podcast Ryan, Stephen, Aaron, and Josh talk about different ways that you can use the playing or watching of sports to connect with your student and point them to Jesus. Using Sports for God's Glory It's a training ground for character/integrity, and doing hard things. It can be a great model for community and what it looks like to love and serve others. It's an amazing platform for evangelism. Even watching sports gives you just a shared experience and an opportunity to just talk. Pitfalls of Sports False identity (I am _______________) An excuse to sin (cheating, treating others poorly) It can be a distraction and take away from true spiritual community and growing in Jesus Starter Questions/Ways to Connect Over Sports Learn the sports and teams and players that your student likes and why. If you student doesn't really care for sports, it could just be an opportunity to hear what they don't like and why. (It's not wrong to not like a sport, but it could be a good connection point to learn more about them) Do they love watching certain sports? Do they like playing certain sports? What are the things that make [INSERT FAVORITE SPORT HERE] so awesome? (If your student plays a sport) What do you love about that sport? What is hard about that sport? (If a team sport) What is the best part about playing on a team? What's hard? Do you feel like you are the same person on and off "the field"? What tempts you the most? (is it cheating? being harsh with others? desiring to win above all else? etc) Ideas? Questions? Send them to podcast@graceky.org or contact the student ministry director at your campus.

Who's Responsible? 01.25.21 Today on The Couch Time Podcast, Aaron, Stephen, Ryan, and Josh talk about a way that you can use responsibility to train your student on their identity, being in community, and how they can serve others. SHOW NOTES Definition: Adolescence - “The prolonged transitional period of time from childhood to adulthood.” Especially during adolescence we believe there are three primary, and foundational, questions that teens need help answering. Who Am I? Where Do I Belong? What Difference Do I Make? Each of these questions we can find answers to in Scripture. Here are just a few to chew on: Ephesians 2:10 Genesis 1:27 2 Corinthians 5:20 Ephesians 1:5 Based on someones answer to these three questions we find out how to be responsible. Responsibility is the defining characteristic and marker of the end of Adolescence. Responsibility: “Acting, thinking, and speaking accordingly, based on where you are, who is around, and what you’re supposed to be doing.” Pray about, Consider, and search scripture for ways you can teach your students how to be responsible. And use it as a tool and way to talk with them about Christ, both when they succeed and fail. Remind them of Who They are in Him, Where they belong, and What He wants them to do! Ideas? Questions? Send them to podcast@graceky.org or contact the student ministry director at your campus.
