If you are a young professional or student, get ready for some serious motivation. Shawn and I had a heartfelt discussion about failing in university; dealing with obstacles in London, and learning about his journey to working with Bjarke Ingels on a major national project. We uncovered the secret to building your brand from scratch and raising your profile in a difficult profession. Shawn has used his architectural background to start a business in social consultation within the built industry. The POoR Collective is still in its infancy but is already making major moves.  Having completed a Master's degree in Architecture from the Royal College of Art in 2020, his most recent work 'Plinths and Tapestry' has featured in the Financial Times, The Guardian and was the winner of the 2020 Architects' Journal Postgraduate Student Prize. Previously, a New Architecture Writer, Shawn is an advocate for diversity and inclusion within the architecture industry and is a RIBAJ Rising Star. He is also the co-founder of POoR collective, a social enterprise that focuses on the development of communities through the elevation of young people. - You can tune in to the Two Worlds Design podcast on all major streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and more here: https://twoworldsdesign.co.uk   - Find out more about Shawn here: https://www.shawn-adams.com/ Find out more about the POoR Collective here: https://www.poorcollective.com/about - You can find me and my architectural drawings on Instagram here: https://instagram.com/hamzashaikh.design

How do you build an online presence in the field of architecture or design? Is it 'bad' to want 'followers' and 'likes'? What opportunities are architectural influencers getting through social media? How can you balance a full-time architecture job alongside social media content creation? If there's anyone who can help me answer these questions, it's Fraser. My long time digital friend and architecture drawing pen pal. Fraser is a graduate from the London School of Architecture and currently works at Architecture 00. He has a large social media following where he shares speculative drawing studies and documents his exciting professional journey from student to esteemed practitioner. Join us as we talk about the importance of Instagram and social media presence as architectural practitioners.

How do you start an architecture school from scratch? What changes are coming to architectural education/university and the profession? What is so special about London? Join me and the extraordinarily well-spoken Will Hunter in a deep dive into how he started The London School of Architecture,(LSA) England's first independent school of architecture since the Architectural Association opened in 1847. Will Hunter is a writer, entrepreneur and educator. He is the founder of the London School of Architecture, which he conceived in 2010 as an alternative educational model to widen access into the architectural profession. He completed his tenure as its first chief executive in June 2021. Pursuing new opportunities arising from post-pandemic working patterns, Will recently set up Equilio, a nascent prop-tech startup to explore ways of developing communities that balance living and working, city and rural, humanity and the planet. An architecture graduate from University College London and the Royal College of Art, he taught at the latter school for several years on the master's programme. He was executive editor of the Architectural Review and is cofounder of Citizen magazine.

THIS IS A VERY SPECIAL EPISODE with Jordan Whitewood-Neal, my good friend from university! Jordan was a multi-award-winning student and after having worked for Stirling Prize winners DRMM, he went on to be a visiting lecturer at the University of Brighton. His dissertation, 'The Cascade Experiment: The Growth, Conservation and Cultivation of An Autoethnographic Woodland' was nominated for the RIBA Presidents Medal. He is also the Architects' Journal Student Prize 2020 Nominee and the RIBA Sussex Student Prize 2020 Nominee. We spoke about how he deals with Proteus Syndrome, one of the world's rarest disabilities; the parallels between our minority groups and resilience; and how to excel at architecture university! This episode is unique because of my and Jordan's close relationship and memories. We talked about much of our life in university together and how we felt part of a culture of intense competition. But was it all bad? I argue that we got immense value from this competition.  You can tune in to the Two Worlds Design podcast on all major streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and more here: https://twoworldsdesign.co.uk

In this episode, I speak with Charlie Edmonds, co-founder of the Future Architects Front (FAF).  In the last year, the FAF and Charlie have been making waves in the field of Architecture raising massive awareness around the exploitation of architectural assistants in the UK. His campaign started as an Instagram poll and transformed into a national survey that was headed by the Architects' Journal. As a result of his whistleblowing campaign and continual social media activism, the Architectural Registration Board (ARB) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) initiated institutional and systematic changes to address the issues and mistreatment experienced by those at the bottom of the profession.  "Future Architects Front are an informal organisation of young architectural practitioners and students. We are a fully independent group and exist beyond the pressures and interests of architectural practice, education, and media. We operate in a number of different capacities, from research to activism to quasi-political campaigning. FAF was created and is run by Charlie Edmonds and Priti Mohandas, British designers and researchers. The pair met and began the work of FAF while conducting their Master's in Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Cambridge." In this episode, I spoke to Marcus Fairs, The Editor in Chief and founder of Dezeen. The world’s most influential design magazine. Now I’m gonna be honest with you, I was a little nervous for this one. Because I’ve known the name Marcus Fairs since the early days of university, and Dezeen has had a huge impact not just on me but the entire field of Architecture. It’s changed the discourse. I never thought I’d be sat opposite its founder asking him questions about how he partied with Kanye West and flirted with Zaha Hadid. But Marcus was not an easy person to interview, probably because HE'S normally the one asking the questions! The story of how he started Dezeen is funny, inspiring, and shocking at times. We spoke about how him getting fired was the first step to starting the journey and how spending 1 hour a day working on his passion was the key to success. You’re listening to episode 14 of the Two Worlds Design podcast and I'm your host, Hamza Shaikh.

But he is also a biomedical scientist who cuts up dead bodies, but don’t worry that’s just part of his job. Tabish is a really unique person because from his scientific education, he transitioned inadvertently into becoming an acclaimed art critic with a huge and growing following. He regularly visits architectural projects and has a keen interest in the art of building. So who better to ask if a building is beautiful than him? Because the rest of us certainly aren’t going to agree on it.His insights helped me to understand the deep connections between art and architecture. We spoke about how art is ascribed value by crowd-perception, and we deliberated on who the real Banksy is!  You’re listening to episode 13 of the Two Worlds Design podcast and I'm your host, Hamza Shaikh.

I met Marly at the Kiefhoek Social Housing estate as she gave us a guided tour around one of the most important social housing projects in modernist architecture history. It was designed by the renowned architect JJP Oud, who is considered to be one of the Big 4.During our tour, I was mesmerised by Marly’s passion, knowledge, and wonderment for the project that it inspired me to approach her for a podcast episode. And she said yes! Nearly every sentence that came out of his mouth was of immense value for young architectural practitioners. Chris recently has had huge success with his project called Proxy Address, which is a database and social enterprise he created to help homeless people integrate back into society. And the way he did it is incredibly smart and innovative. But what’s even more surprising is that he was educated and continues to practice as an architect. Or did you ever think deeply into whether incorporating nature within architecture actually improves your experience?   This episode is mind-blowing. Because I actually got to ask a scientist and professor of psychology whether you can measure happiness! And you won’t believe her answer. I have always been fascinated with the field of psychology and how architects and designers can learn more from its findings. This episode is filled with super fun facts and examples of crazy experiments.
