Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging at a fast pace and beginning to integrate into many facets of our day to day lives. Architecture and engineering are no exception. Kat Stevens is a Masters in Architecture student at the University of Westminster in London, England and is immersed in the beginning stages of AI integration into Architecture. She was first introduced to this design tool while working as a Junior BIM Architect at Zaha Hadid Architects. By using AI to generate schematic level, conceptual building sketches, ideas are able to be transferred from a client's imagination to sketches in just a few seconds by entering key descriptors into the AI platform. Midjourney is currently a prevalent graphical AI platform that is being used by architects to generate these initial sketches. With over 32,000 LinkedIn followers, it is clear to see that Kat's work and the emerging field of AI in Architecture are generating great interest. Our hope is that this starts the AI conversation for listeners. Her points are thought-provoking, novel and interesting. Building tall in Japan isn't easy and that's why this week we're heading to Tokyo to look at the insane engineering of the city's first supertall skyscraper - the imaginatively named "Main Tower" or Toranomon-Azabudai District Main Tower.Later in the show, we look at the feather-inspired airport that's set to be constructed in China. MAD Architects won an international design competition with its concept for the new Terminal 3 at Changchun Longjia International Airport. Further into the segment, we chat about the new cybersecurity center in Wuhan that's inspired by information flow, designed by Aedas Architects. There's also a £1.9BN new district that's been proposed for Birmingham. Led by Birmingham City Council and Lendlease, the colourful Smithfield development could create over 3,000 new homes and some 120,000 square metres of office and retail space across a 17 hectare site in the centre of the city. Lastly, we look at Zaha Hadid Architects-designed office towers that have been approved in Vilnius, Lithuania. We end the show with a nice Apple Podcasts review from swankylee in Canada. This week we're heading to Chicago, USA to look at the SECRET $4BN tunnel network under the metropolis, AKA: the Tunnel and Reservoir Project (TARP) - this massive 175-kilometre tunnel is quietly saving the windy city.Later in the show, we talk about the £3.5BN new district that's been proposed for London. Extending across a 20 hectare site in the Royal Docks to the east of the city centre and opposite the ExCel centre, this proposal looks to transform a whole area of the UK's capital - including the derelict Millennium Mills. Also, Saudi Arabia appears to have started construction work on Trojena — a vast development in the desert mountains that hopes to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games. Lastly, we chat about Chengdu's dramatic new Science Fiction Museum that's under-construction and set to host the international Worldcon event later this year. Conceived by Zaha Hadid Architects, the 59,000 square metre complex is designed to appear like a "star cloud" floating over the surrounding Jingrong Lake. It looks immense. We end the show with a lovely email sent in from Ludvig Ring, who seems to be our biggest fan yet…? Maybe? We also read out a lovely Apple Podcasts review.Get in touch! Everyone seems to agree—flexibility will be key to the future of work. But what about the future of workplaces? Office buildings, often tens of thousands of vertically stacked square feet, are made of concrete and steel and other inflexible materials. How can we reimagine these behemoths to accommodate a more flexible way of working? With us for this episode is Vered Gindi, owner of Gindi Studio Architects, whose team recently completed work on Microsoft's brand new Tel Aviv campus; Arjun Kaicker, head of analytics and insights at Zaha Hadid Architects; and Stéphane Villemain, vice president of corporate social responsibility with Ivanhoé Cambridge.

Tune in to Episode 10 of the PA Talks series with Patrik Schumacher, an architect and architectural theorist based in London. He is the principal architect of Zaha Hadid Architects, widely known for working with Dame Zaha Hadid since joining Zaha Hadid Architects practice in 1988. He completed his architectural diploma and received his degree from Stuttgart University in 1990, andreceived his Ph.D. at the Institute for Cultural Sciences at the University of Klagenfurt in 1999. His completed projects include the MAXXI Center of Contemporary Art and Architecture, and one of the practice's first completed constructions, the Vitra Fire Station. Schumacher uses the term ‘'parametricism'' to denote the usage of advanced computational design techniques in architecture. He argues that the global convergence in recent avant-garde architecture justifies the enunciation of this novel style. Consequently, in 2008 he launched a manifesto for parametricism at the Venice Biennale of Architecture. I hope you enjoy the podcast. Nicolas Turchi is a designer currently working at Zaha Hadid Architects and a Digital Futures PhD scholar at Tongji University. Nicholas holds a Master in Architecture II from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Bologna and University of West of England. He has worked for several firms including Eisenman Architect, Xefirotarch, Mario Cucinella Architects and 5+1AA. Nicolas is particularly interested in emergent technologies and how they affect the theoretical aspect of the discipline. He has also been studying the relationship between architecture and philosophy and graduated with a thesis on Time and Space in architecture, influenced by the thought of Henri Bergson and Edmund Husserl. For today's episode we will be talking to Nicolas Turchi about why it is so important for him to expose himself to new circumstances, new cultures, new places, new ideologies, new everything in order to stay ahead. We talk about his different backgrounds, from Italy, to London, to the United States, and to London again… We talk about why he loves working at Zaha Hadid Architects, and he gives us some insights into his thesis project and life long obsession, time and architecture and specifically why he believes that architects must bring something from outside of the discipline, to have a more well-rounded profession. We also talk at great lengths about how parametricism is becoming a new norm, but how we as designers should always stay above that term, and not let the computer design for us nor have parametric designs for the sake of being innovative, but using parametric workflows to be more efficient and have better performance. Really interesting conversation, I am really excited about it, hope you all enjoy! Arturo Tedeschi is an architect, independent researcher and computational designer, since 2004 complemented professional practice in Italy with a personal research on parametric design, focusing on relationships between architecture and new design tools. In 2010 he published “Architettura Parametrica”, a bestseller book on parametric design, translated into english as “Parametric Architecture with Grasshopper” in 2011. In the same year he worked at Zaha Hadid Architects in London. In 2011 he founded A > T a cloud based office which provides computational design services and training for architects, designers and companies. He's currently director and teacher of a series of workshops on parametric design and he has been an invited lecturer at universities and conferences worldwide. From 2012 to 2014 he is co-director of the AA Rome Visiting School for the Architectural Association School (London). His projects have been exhibited in Rome (MACRO museum), Milan, London, Paris (Carrousel du Louvre, Centre Pompidou), Cologne and Venice (Off event at Biennale 2014). In 2014 he published AAD_Algorithms-Aided Design the worldwide reference book on algorithmic modeling, based on the Grasshopper platform. In 2019 he has been appointed Italian Ambassador for Design at IDD19 by Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In this episode, we talk about his random encounter with a parametric sculpture at a museum and how it changed his whole life. We talk about what architects he has always admired and where to start learning parametric design. We go deep into the topic of computational design as a new way to assist the designer in a project and how he sees the future of architecture changing due to all this. He gives some insights into what his design process is and how he goes through idea, concept, to final product and what are the obstacles he has faced through the fabrication method. He talks about his beliefs about how architecture is not merely building or real estate, but that to him, architecture is about solving complexities in our everyday objects and making our quality of life better. Finally, he gives advice to all architecture students and designers out there, talking about how competition can destroy our lives and how to take advantage of social media. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
