“Not winning is in fact more powerful than winning,” professor Monica Wadhwa argues. Her research reveals that people tend to be most energized and motivated not when they win, but when they almost win. Falling just short of one’s ambitions tends to give people the motivation to keep growing and striving. Easy victories, on the other hand, tend to cripple energy and motivation. Wadhwa’s perspective gives fresh insight on Paul’s analogy comparing following Christ to running a race (1 Corinthians 10:24-27; Philippians 3:12-14). In both instances, Paul emphasizes that believers ought to give their pursuit of Christ and the gospel their all, “straining toward what is ahead” (Philippians 3:13) and running “in such a way as to get the prize” (1 Corinthians 9:24). The paradoxical truth is that what we’re striving for—faithfully sharing the gospel (v. 23) and knowing Christ (Philippians 3:8)—aren’t things we can ever say we’ve achieved. We’ll always fall short. We’ll never be able to say we’ve “already arrived” (v. 12). But that’s okay—because it’s the experience of drawing ever closer to Christ that matters. It’s only His strength that empowers and motivates us to pour our whole hearts into pursuing Him—the One who will one day carry us to victory.

Why did Josh Seiter do what he did?Jack has always read Josh being described as a 'former Bachelorette star' and always thought this was a little unfair: who is he? Is he "an attention seeking troll who is mocking trans people. All he has ever done has been to get attention and make money off of it"?Or, is there more to the man?Listen to the conversation, now!Further notesThe sex offender (Adam Graham) was said to have been given an apology after being called 'son' by a female prison officer. Adam Graham claims prison staff treat trans women 'like men'.In October 2022, a Freedom of Information request obtained by The Times showed that Cornton Vale had a transgender prison population of 16, half of whom had begun the transitioning process following their conviction. At one point, that population included Katie Dolatowski, a convicted child-sex offender who spent time there in 2022 after breaching a restriction of liberty order.Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) BillKey changes include removing the requirement for a medical diagnosis, instead allowing individuals to self-declare their gender. Applicants would need to meet criteria around residency and age, with the minimum age for application being lowered from 18 to 16. The bill also shortens the required time that individuals must live in their acquired gender to three months (or six months for 16- and 17-year-olds), followed by a three-month reflection period to ensure the decision is made with due consideration. The Edinburgh Rape Crisis CentreERCC's trans-inclusionary policy led to J. She is also a trans-activist. She previously served as Chief Executive Officer of Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre. In September 2024, Wadhwa resigned from the ERCC following a review commissioned by Rape Crisis Scotland. The review found 93 percent of survivors felt hopeful about their future after their time with the ERCC. It noted only 2 instances of survivors avoiding the ERCC as a result of their policiesIn May 2024, an employment tribunal gave a decision in favour of Roz Adams, who was constructively dismissed by Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre. The tribunal found Adams, who identifies as a "sex realist", had been unfairly targeted due to her gender-critical belief that service users should be able to specify the sex of their support staff. The Cass ReportEvidence on puberty blockers: The report found that the evidence on puberty blockers is insufficient, but also acknowledges their efficacy for some trans young people. The report recommends more evidence be gathered through compulsory medical trials. Long-term outcomes: The report found that there is no good evidence on the long-term outcomes of interventions to manage gender-related distress. Clinical care: The report recommends that children and young people with gender incongruence or dysphoria receive the same standards of clinical care, assessment, and treatment. Quality improvement and research infrastructure: The report recommends quality improvement and research infrastructure to strengthen the evidence base underpinning care. "The good thing the gift was I got a lot of time alone. I literally built a world inside me, I could imagine things I could and also, I suppose while it was undiagnosed ADHD back then, but it was always somebody who had 1000 windows open in this house of life. So imagine you have all the windows of the house open. And there is a lot of wind coming on in sunlight coming in, this is a house, my house is life. And my head was like that. So I grew my own beliefs, I started to have deeper self awareness and reflection. I was always that child who was far more aware and cognizant of internal chatter than perhaps other people. So while it can be a curse, it can lead to severe anxiety or we're thinking, but we see it as against. " Sindhu Wadhwa likes to call herself a glorious mess. A back bencher mom. Cheerleader wife. What is the primary driver of effective and impactful leadership? Is it from science—or the soul? Is it a more practical, results-driven organizational practice? Or is it an inner, meditative sense of self? This week's Finding Mastery guest, Dr. Hitendra Wadhwa, has spent his career exploring these questions… and his answer is, well, both.Hitendra fuses the mystical history of his Indian roots with the more results-oriented needs of Western business -- bridging the gap between spirituality and science, leadership and personal growth. It's a methodology that he teaches at Columbia Business School, the Mentora Institute (which he founded), on his podcast "Intersections" and in his book, Inner Mastery, Outer Impact. He's turned what he's found into powerful tools that any of us can use to be effective leaders and masters of our own lives.Hitendra's message for us is simple and clear: when you cultivate your inner self, wisdom shows up in the outer self. And that wisdom can be used to lead. Hitendra does it with an engaging sense of story, and telling examples from the lives of Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill, and Steve Jobs.Today, we talk about cultivating inner awareness and outer engagement, unlocking human energy to lead, checking emotion before making decisions, finding meaning in every experience, and much, much more. This entire conversation was full of insights and I think you may just leave it thinking about success, leadership, and your relationship to it in a whole new way. With Fire,MG-----WATCH this episode on our YouTube channel.Connect with us on our Instagram.Order my book, "The First Rule of Mastery" HERE!For more information and shownotes from every episode, head to findingmastery.com.To check out our exclusive sponsor deals and discounts CLICK HERESee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
This episode is part 3 in my series on Inner Mastery. We think what drives us is the desire for something...out there. It's having a goal and wanting the goal so much that we're motivated enough to do what it takes to achieve it. This is how we parent. I've done it too. Provide an incentive. "Here is what you'll get...what you can have...if you'll get up and do the work." It can work, but it's a short term solution. Once the prize is achieved you go back to square one. What we want is to be people who are always motivated toward positive results. Again, you are always driven. But your drive is fueled by fear or desire. You can be driving backwards, you can be driven off on time wasting detours. You can be driven to massive wrecks. We all want to be driven to wake up daily and make positive progress toward fulfilling destinations, and regardless of the destination, be enjoying the ride. This comes from inner mastery. Note, don't hear "mastery" as a noun. A destination. Think of it as a verb. More like...inner mastering. Always growing. My expert in part one and two was Hitendra Wadhwa, a professor at Columbia Business School where his class on Personal Leadership & Success is one of the most popular classes. Hitendra's new book is titled, INNER MASTERY, OUTER IMPACT: How Your Five Core Energies Hold the Key to Success. Here I have my brother and frequent co-host, Jared Angaza on to discuss these five keys, as in my long talk with Hitendra we never got past the first key, purpose. Next are wisdom, growth, love, and self-realization. My interest is digging into how we have cultural meanings programmed into us and misperceive all five core energies, and how we can get them flowing to better inform and direct our drive You can watch this full episodes on YouTube - just search for “What Drives You with Kevin Miller” What Drives You is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping Life and Leadership coaches. ShownotesThe Elephant in the Room podcast was in hibernation in December and January. We are back this week with our first episode of the year with the indomitable Ritika Wadhwa. Ritika Wadhwa is a strategic advisory board member for British Transport Police, is a Fellow at the Society of Leadership Fellows, Windsor Castle, a Board Director and Trustee of the 5% club. But, above all of that she is an accomplished, kind and hugely generous person - opening up her networks to all who need it (including me). There is a beautiful story behind the name of her consultancy Prabhaav Global and also her brand colours (listen to the podcast to know more). She is one of the many people I follow on LinkedIn and early last year I invited her to be a guest on my podcast. By the time we actually recorded the podcast episode it was October (I think) - the timing was perfect though. She had taken a proverbial leap of faith and launched her consultancy Prabhaav Global - on a mission to cultivate cultural intelligence amongst individuals and organisations. When we finally caught up we spoke about cultural intelligence, her journey to entrepreneurship, working with a global brand like ASOS, intent and impact, culture and identity, leadership and much much more……“When I decided to call it Prabhaav Global, a lot of people were giving me their feedback to say, why make it difficult? And I said, difficult for who? Because Prabhaav speaks to me. Prabhav means impact in Hindi. And that's what I want to do. That's me, that's my identity. That's my language. And I'm done with fitting in. I'm done with trying to be someone I'm not yet again. So I said, that's it. I'm going to call it Prabhaav Global. The colours of the company are going to be turmeric because I love yellow. It's my favourite spice and turmeric is the spice that transforms everything that it touches, thats I want to achieve through Prabhaav Global, transformational leadership, transformational behaviours” Ritika WadhwaLike to know more, head to the podcast

In this episode we look at a key myth about drive. That it comes from focusing on an external motivation. You are driven to make more money, secure a certain relationship, attain a position, have an experience, etc…It's always “out there.” And yet all those things are simply items we focus on to get our inner self, driven. My book is about unlocking the drive inside you, and though I do in fact use external motives as tools, the work happens…inside. So here I kick off a series on Inner Mastery. My expert is Hitendra Wadhwa. Hitendra is a professor at Columbia Business School and Founder of the Mentora Institute. His class on Personal Leadership & Success is one of the most popular at Columbia Business School. Hitendra's mission is to discover, codify and teach the laws of success in life and leadership. His research integrates the latest science of human nature, ancient wisdom, studies of great leaders, and the personal journeys of everyday heroes. Hitendra's new book is titled, INNER MASTERY, OUTER IMPACT: How Your Five Core Energies Hold the Key to Success, and is endorsed by Arthur Brooks who we just had on the show for the second time, as well as Angela Duckworth, author of Grit, and 8 time Olympian Apolo Ohno. Earth 911, plus “Adventures In the Anthropocene…”By Gaia Vince, and Eco-Hero Award Winner, Aarushi Wadhwa
This week Dennis leads off with the Georgia run-off and the Twitter Files, asking the $64 Question, "Where is the media outrage on election interference?" Then Vivek Wadhwa, the Silicon Valley author, Harvard academic, and friend of Elon Musk lets loose with startlingly blunt criticism of his old friend. According to “The Vivver,” Musk is partying too much, is surrounded by idiots giving him bad advice, and is taking too many drugs that are “eating away his brain.” Wadhwa also says Musk will never make his $44 billion deal pay off, that he should have paid a $1 billion kill fee to back out of the deal. And then returned with a bid of only $20B or $30B. Dennis also talks with wealth advisor Ed Butowsky, a former 20-year Wall Street veteran who has managed hundreds of millions of dollars in client portfolios. He says Wall Street always has been bad at assessing risk, and FTX shows the results: a $200 billion wipeout in the value of various crypto coins and the bankruptcy of FTX, worth $32 billion only months ago. "Eddie B” also talks about short-term bonds---everyone else says buy them now, and he disagrees. And he offers a few alternatives. All that and The Parting Shot. Learn more about your ad choices. Dr. Hitendra Wadhwa, Adjunct Professor at Columbia Business School, is the author of Inner Mastery, Outer Impact. Dr. Wadhwa joins Marcel to discuss where everyone's success truly comes from our Inner Core. He explains his story behind the inspiration for his latest book, and unpacks a few of the 5 Core Energies to mastering your Inner Core; Purpose, Wisdom, Growth, Love, and Self-Realization. The Inner CoreDr. Hitendra Wadhwa discusses the book Inner Mastery, Outer Impact. The Inner Core is a place we can all find success, when focused on it and living truly from your Inner Core you will see from faith that the opportunities on the outside will manifest. The Inner Core can be fully accessed by activating these 5 Core Energies: Purpose, Wisdom, Growth, Love, and Self- Realization. While we unpack several energies, Dr. Wadhwa details all of the 5 stages for each of these energies in the book, “The essence of the book is inviting us to become familiar, and activate and to let our Inner Core shine through by putting these energies in action in everything we do.” [34:00] PurposeThe first stage of purpose Dr. Wadhwa calls a “Stirring” in which people hunger to get more out of life or from a crisis mode that changes your outlook or circumstance. This first stage leads to the following 4 stages: searching for the answers, defining values, focusing and affirming yourself by living by the things you've discovered, and finally fusion where you create a magical moment of living your purpose in all facets of your life. Can anyone pursue their purpose? Dr. Wadhwa says, “We may be restricted by our own imagination. What is it that we can manifest and do in the present moment in the circumstances that the universe has put us in?” [31:30] Love You do this by putting love into action. This core energy utilizes this beautiful analogy of love as a flower. Stage 1: Prepare the Soil. Dr. Wadhwa explains that the research says you must get to a place where you yourself feel adequately and fully loved because you cannot give what you do not have. Stage 2: Sew the Seeds. Look for the virtues, strengths, and beauty in life with appreciation, gratitude, abundance, and empathy. Stage 3: Remove the Weeds. In love, this means removing the hatred, grudges, and judgment from all places in your life. Stage 4: Prune the Branches. This critical piece in which you must take care of yourself even when it comes to the hard decisions. Stage 5: Make Love Bloom. Dr. Wadwha says, “The way I define love is, it's about taking joy in other people's joy, and taking success in other people's success… You are not meant to sit in splendid isolation from the rest of humanity but you're meant to be intertwined with them in beautiful ways.” [34:40] Removing the WeedsCommenting on Stage 3 of the Love Core Energy, Marcel comments that there are a lot of weeds, and the weeds are so tall we aren't able to see over them to the other side. He seeks tips from Dr. Wadhwa about truly removing judgment and hatred given the circumstances of our world. Dr. Wadhwa challenges the idea of Heroes versus Villains, and how we view the people who agree and disagree with us and reframes the way we think about the “Villains” with a lens to see them as “Heros”. “There is value in seeing things from a place of humble curiosity, and recognize that truth is more nuanced than a quick atomization and polarization of the world.” [54:25] Mentioned in this episode:Hitendra WadhwaHitendra Wadhwa (@HitendraWadhwa) on TwitterMentora InstituteMentora Foundation

Today we feature Professor Hitendra Wadhwa PhD who has been a fan of David's work for the past ten years. Hitendra has just published a new book, Inner Mastery, Outer Impact. Hitendra is a Professor of Practice at Columbia Business School and Founder of the Mentora Institute, and his class on Personal Leadership & Success is one of the most popular at Columbia Business School. He believes that the secret of leadership and success in business stems from inner mastery. He also has his own fascinating and skillfully produced podcast called Intersections where he interviews accomplished individuals from different spheres of human pursuit to draw out their insights and stories about the pursuit of success and happiness. One of Hitendra's aims has been to integrate current psychological trends with ancient wisdom in order to glean the most important ideas needed for happy and successful lives. He has backed this up with a daily meditation practice he began 20 years ago, seeking answers to the most basic questions about the meaning and purpose of our lives and a philosophy that leads to joy, connection, and productivity. Hitendra gives an example of how inner mastery can lead to outer impact. A colleague named Dan used to relentlessly find shortcomings and point to improved solutions every time Hitendra presented his work when he was first working as a business consultant. He said that he carried a grudge against Dan for several weeks because he was trying to impress his colleagues and felt put down by Dan. Of course, this type of attitude and defensiveness can easily trigger the very adversarial responses we fear. Then we tend to blame the “outer” and overlook how we might be inadvertently creating our own negative external reality. Fortunately, the opposite is equally true. When your attitude suddenly shifts, and your “inner” self changes, your outer reality will nearly always suddenly shift at the same time. One day, one of Hitendra' s supervisors said to him: You should be more like Dan. He's trying to help you take your game to the next level, but you don't take a similar interest in helping him find ways to improve his work!” Hitendra explained the impact of his supervisor's statement: “This comment suddenly turned on a light bulb in my head. I realized I was viewing Dan as an enemy, so if he criticized me, I thought he was against me, so I viewed him as the “enemy.” Instead, I decided to find the truth in his criticisms and began to view him as an ally, as a teacher, as someone who wanted to help me. “At that point, our entire relationship changed dramatically, and I felt empowered!” Of course, podcast fans will realize this as the Disarming Techniques, one of the Five Secrets of Effective Communication that David has popularized. Hitendra also discussed other themes in his new book, like what it means to “be true to yourself,” and how to discover the crown jewel within yourself, at your core. He also described how to tap into the five sources of core energy within yourself: Purpose, Wisdom, Growth, Love, and Self-Realization. He said that many people are afraid of Love, fearing that it is the same as weakness and will lead them to get taken advantage of. He suggested that in reality, love is a powerful force, and gave examples of the expression of love in a variety of successful business. He told many fun and inspiring stories, including his stuckness when trying to think of a way to honor his father's 80th birthday. He couldn't think of what he'd say at the celebration, because he'd always done the opposite of what his father had recommended. But then, while meditating, he saw that he'd been inspired all long by how his father had lived his life. He talked about the concept of transcendence as well as racism, and pointed out that we tend to label people based on some characteristic like skin color. But this can be very misleading, because two people who are Black, for example, will often have radically different backgrounds and life experiences. As an example, he described someone from the Caribbean who had no experience of racial discrimination when growing up. He emphasized that when we label people, we get lazy and do not respond to the reality and depth of who that person really is. Essentially, we are then putting people in “boxes” instead of seeing them for the full richness of who they are. He also said that our human identities are partly shared and partly unique. For example, Martin Luther King, Jr. learned a great deal from Mahatma Gandhi, who in turn was inspired by Leo Tolstoy—indicating a merger of three strikingly different cultures. Using story-telling, Hitendra addressed basic questions like: How do we integrate our (partially hidden) inner and outer selves? Who am I, really? What's my purpose in the universe? He said that what many psychologists believe they “discover” is actually not new, but based on ancient wisdom, like the practice of gratitude in meditation, and shifting your mindsets, and tuning in to your capacity for compassion and kindness, and finding the best of yourself. Rhonda and I want to thank Hitendra for his journey and wonderful new book, and all of you as well for tuning in and joining us on our journey! Warmly, Rhonda, Hitendra, and David
