How can architects utilize their diverse skill sets outside of the practice to create meaningful, lasting social impact within communities and the built environment? On this episode of Practice Disrupted, we welcome Wayne Mortensen, a leader whose career spans architecture, urban design, and social work. As Vice President of Excel Development Group and founder of Public Square Development Services, Wayne brings an interdisciplinary perspective to community development. In our conversation, we discuss Wayne's passion for affordable housing and his commitment to creating lasting social impact through design.First, he shares his journey, beginning with his academic pursuits in architecture, urban design, and social work. We touch on his transition from traditional consulting to social work to address the intersection between design and community needs. Then, Wayne highlights his time as a Rose Fellow in Cleveland and the importance of trust-based relationships in community development. He talks about founding Public Square Development Services, his leadership role at Excel Development Group, his position at the University of Nebraska, and why working in multiple roles can increase social impact. There's all sorts of ways that skills can be utilized in both conventional architectural practice and non-traditional practice. I want architecture school to be a lot more like my social work experience, where we are an accelerator and not a gatekeeper. Because if there's somebody that is an architecture school, it's because they have a passion and a fundamental belief in the built environment and its importance, and there's absolutely no reason that we can't find a role for them. - Wayne MortensenTo wrap up the conversation, Wayne offers advice to emerging professionals, encouraging them to view architecture education as a tool for diverse career paths. He advocates for a more inclusive and collaborative approach to education as a means to drive meaningful change. Tune in next week for an episode about community-impact consultingGuest:Wayne Mortensen, AIA, NASWWayne Mortensen is a developer, planner, and architect in Lincoln, Nebraska where he serves as Vice President of Excel Development Group and runs a nonprofit affordable housing consultancy, Public Square Development Services. After preparing for a traditional career in architecture at the University of Nebraska, his academic interests shifted to the emerging field of public interest design–a journey that took him to DC, St Louis, and Cleveland before returning home in 2020 to explore affordable housing solutions that transcend the urban/rural divide. In DC, Wayne oversaw the launch of a national service initiative called Freedom by Design while serving as the 2003 President of the American Institute of Architecture Students. In 2010, he was awarded an Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellowship, which took him to Cleveland, Ohio. For nearly a decade, he helped facilitate citywide planning, housing, and redevelopment strategies as a pro bono consultant within Cleveland's expansive community development ecosystem. This work culminated in 2020, the same year that Wayne was the recipient of an AIA Young Architect Award.

Observational (sketching)2. Critical thinking 3. Analytical thinking(Both number 2 & 3 are to do with reading and understanding concepts apart from architecture, and through the processes of reflective thinking is able to be more discerning). These make up the fundamental skill set on 'how to' obtain the knowledge and ability to be an architect who will have choices of different career streams and not just end up working for a developer or one type of architecture company for the rest of their lives. © 2024 Talk Architecture, Author: Naziaty Mohd Yaacob. Distraction is deadly. Though, getting distracted now is more common than ever before. Furthermore, the demand for focus is greater now than ever before. So, how can you regain focus in a distracting world? This is a simple trick I use to stop distraction and focus on what I should be doing instead. Prefer listening/reading? Check out the show notes: https://successfularchistudent.com/how-to-stop-getting-distracted/ Check out my FREE online course for architecture students: ▼ 70 Hacks for Architecture Students▼ → https://successfularchistudent.com/← Last night I posted a story on my Instagram explaining how I've discovered some magical solution to getting distracted. Let's face it, we all get distracted and have our attention taken away from what we should be doing. Right now, in this century, the most important characteristic to have is focus. It's what employers are looking for, so it'll make you more hireable, it's what allows you to get more work done and get better grades, it's what allows you to have clarity and comfort within your own life to get more done and achieve great things. Focus. What's this trick that I discovered last night that removes distractions? Let me explain. I remember in the midst of my studio 6 project thinking “right! I've got 8 days to go and have 6 weeks of work to catch up on. I'm going to leave my phone in another room, I'm closing all other programs and I'm not going to get distracted. But first… I should clean my desk. But first, I should check my university emails. I should take the trash out. I should have something to eat.” Yaddi yaddi yadda. Even when we know we have to work without distraction – we sometimes just can't pull ourselves to it. What I did was this… I said no – I'm not going to clean my desk. That's the first step – to say no to the distraction. It's very much a habit you need to develop over time from doing it more and more. Say no and your willpower will get stronger. That's something worth noting too – you need to know what you're actually getting distracted from. We might know that we need to do our studio 6 project. But, what does that actually involve? It might be worth initially investing 5 minutes of your time to figure that out and create a plan for yourself before getting stuck into it. It's like the analogy I often use where we tend to do busy work instead of what's important. It's like we're running on a treadmill, when you need to step off of that and go run towards the finish line. Know what you need to do by creating a plan and schedule. Anyways, this is the trick I did. I got my phone and set an alarm for 1 hour. I put that phone in the room next to me – on do not disturb mode of course – and got to work. Quite often we say, “okay, no distractions, let's go.” And we end up getting distracted like before. That's because we don't know how long we should be working without distraction for. By setting an alarm for 1 hour, it constantly reminds me for that hour that I can't get distracted until I hear that alarm go off.

Check out the show notes: https://successfularchistudent.com/75/ Check out my FREE online course for architecture students: ▼ 70 Hacks for Architecture Students▼ → https://successfularchistudent.com/← Architecture students don't have an easy life in school. When times get tough, we can begin to dwell and fall into a spiral of demotivation. It can get worse and worse over time – we lose motivation, we do nothing, we know how important work doing is, we get more demotivated, we die from heart attack. I want to teach you how to gain lasting motivation to study and do well in architecture. If you're stuck and are not motivated, I feel like it'd be a good idea to take a day off. Go to the beach or a place you like and bring some paper and a pen. Write down what got you into architecture in the first place. Write down where you're going and what you have to do to get there. Really try visualise who you want to be, the things in life you want and how architecture is the vessel to get you there. Sometimes it's a matter of just getting stuck because you have no vision of why you started in the first place. The work becomes mundane because it's got no meaning. But once you create that fire again and find the meaning it becomes easy. I think you'll be just fine! Motivation comes in waves. That's because it's a habit. Sometimes you got to keep fuelling that habit by thinking back to your goals consistently and constantly remind yourself why you started.

Is architecture hard? Well, it's not easy. But how hard is studying architecture? How difficult is it to become an architect? Let's find out. Prefer watching/reading? Check out the show notes: https://successfularchistudent.com/is-architecture-hard/ Check out my FREE online course for architecture students: ▼ 70 Hacks for Architecture Students▼ → https://successfularchistudent.com/← There seems to be this stigma around architecture being really difficult to study – but why? If we break it down, there are a few things that come into play. Firstly being – that it's time consuming. Architecture is perceived as being hard because of how time intensive it is – this heavy requirement of a student's time and lack of experience managing their own time creates sleepless nights, long days in the studio and a horrific amount of homework. Because there is no end to the work you do – as in – an architect's work is never finished. There's always something you can add, subtract, implement or change to your design. The only thing that puts an official stop to your work is the deadline, or due date. The second reason architecture is so hard is that it requires deep thinking and understanding. Architecture is very design heavy and problem-solving based. These things require deep thinking and critical thought. In a world filled with distractions it's becoming harder and harder to put your head down and just work on deep-thinking tasks. Lastly, it's that architecture school is like going to a semester of construction school, a semester of art school, a semester of theory school, a semester of business school, a semester of history school and a semester of design school all at the same time. It's this jack of all trades which requires you to learn a little bit about a lot. There's so much involved in the world of architecture that it can become overwhelming – and that makes architecture difficult.

These are 7 of the worst mistakes architecture students make in architecture school. Don't be afraid, you can avoid these architecture student problems – let's learn how. Prefer watching/reading? Check out the show notes: https://successfularchistudent.com/the-7-deadliest-mistakes-architecture-students-make-and-how-to-avoid-them/ 0:20 1. Putting things off/procrastination. Architecture students think they have plenty of time to work on approaching deadlines. But, as you might have learnt already, TIME FLIES BY. 1 month until your final project is due? The next thing you know, you've got 1 week left. Time is precious and the earlier you start, the sooner you can finish and the better quality work you can produce. 0:56 2. Not planning. Living in the moment and not planning. We like to attend to problems and deadlines as they come at us. Instead, grab yourself a planner and create a daily schedule for yourself. Organise your time and plan ahead to give yourself some structure to your semester. 1:44 3. Not trying new things. Getting stuck using 1 software, sticking with model making or 1 style of drawing. A BIG mistake I see architecture students make is getting stuck on old ways. Architecture school is the perfect time to be naive and try new things. It's expected you aren't perfect, and you make mistakes. Why not jump in with 2 feet and try something new with every project? 2:32 4. Not learning outside their Uni course. Everyone learns the same thing at Uni. It's what you learn in your own time that gives you an edge. Watch youtube videos, listen to podcasts, complete online courses and gain some skills that make you valuable in the industry. 3:06 5. Not setting your own deadlines. Architecture school can be overwhelming. It gets overwhelming when you look at your projects as ONE BIG SUBMISSION. Instead, break your submissions down into smaller tasks and create for yourself individual deadlines for each smaller task. 4:05 6. Messiness. Messy files, messy room, messy actions lead to messy results. If your files are messy, your desktop is messy, your room is messy, your thoughts are going to be messy. It's extremely hard to focus when you have distractions around you, and an untidy workspace causes mental clutter that makes it that much more difficult. Keep your room tidy, keep your files tidy, keep your mind tidy. 4:55 7. Unclear vision of the future. You need to define a vision of the future. To have something to aim for. Consider trying to hit a bullseye on a dart board. It's already a difficult task as it requires focus, accuracy and precision. Now imagine trying to do it blindfolded. There's no way you're going to consistently hit the bullseye! Even if you do, you wouldn't have any way of knowing. Your goals for the future, being successful and being an architect, are no different. If you haven't clearly defined your goals and where you see yourself in 5, 10, 20 years, it's no different than aiming at a dart board with your eyes blindfolded. Take some time to plan out your future and use your creative mind to envision what that looks like to you. You'll have a clear vision of what you're aiming for and you'll be able to consistently work towards it, one small adjustment at a time.

In fact, I was sold a $260 “essential” tool pack by my local art shop who presented at my Uni on orientation day. … I haven't touched 75% of those tools. In this video, I only share tools and equipment that I use myself. I'm not going to push you into buying “essential tools” that you won't ever use. I share this list of best tools through the experiences I've had in architecture school and hope you find it useful. I want to answer the question, do architecture students sleep? Prefer watching/reading? Check out the show notes: https://successfularchistudent.com/do-architecture-students-sleep/ Architecture students are the most sleep-deprived majors in America. It's official. Sleeping just 5.28 hours, topping the charts in front of nursing and biochemistry at 5.69 hours. However, scientific studies show that sleep is linked to important brain functions such as productivity, concentration and cognition. With architecture being such a mentally requiring job that involves a high amount of concentration – why is it that architecture students don't get as much sleep as they should? How can they function without turning into brainless zombies? Well, that's because architecture students aren't human. Jokes aside – we are human. And we do sleep. The question remains – why don't architecture students get as much sleep as other humans require? Why are we still forced to do all-nighters? The answer – poor time management. RAM is what is used when working on photoshop, rendering programs such as 3DS Max, VRAY and Lumion. If you have less than 16GB of memory, your computer will struggle with these programs.2)You should have at least an i7 processor/CPU. This is what limits how fast you can render 3D models.3)You should have a 1TB SSD (minimum) for your main storage device. Alternatively, you can use a smaller sized SSD and use a Hard Drive to store your files. This is a cheaper option.4)Your Graphics Card, or GPU, determines how quickly and error-free you can view your 3D models in the workspace. A better GPU will allow you to work more efficiently when modelling and creating things in post-render programs such as photoshop. Before making any purchases, I suggest you benchmark the RAM, CPU, SSD OR GPU that you want to buy. This will give you an indication of its ability compared to other hardware out there. You can use sites such as Passmark for this. Just google “CPU benchmark” for example.

He's a friend of mine and a rising star in the profession. Elected as the current president of the American Institute of Architecture Students in December of 2013, I met this man at a small reception following my speech at the organization's annual convention in Chicago. Within minutes of meeting him, I knew that he would be elected the next day and would continue on to do great things for the profession. As president of AIAS, Charlie Klecha is in the process of doing great things. I am excited to see where his journey leads and I am happy to share his story with you here on the Entrepreneur Architect Podcast.   Please review this podcast on iTunes. As a former assistant director of the Intern Development Program (IDP) for the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) and as the new Executive Director of the American Institute of Architecture Students, Nick Serfass is in a very unique position. As a Project Architect earlier in his career, as a member of the Board of Directors for his local Richmond Virginia chapter of the AIA and leading the way on both sides of IDP, Nick Serfass has a perspective of the profession that few others possess. This year the event was held in Chicago Yes, Chicago in December, and yes, we were snowed-in for days. While we waited for the airports to open, I had the opportunity to speak in length with many of the architecture students in attendance. They asked me many questions, but the one concern they had more than any other was what they should do to land their first job in architecture. I shared my thoughts and told them to watch the website for more on the subject. So, here it is a promise fulfilled. In this episode of the Entrepreneur Architect Podcast, I will share my 12 Rules for Landing your First Job in Architecture.
