Hello Wonderful Readers,I felt a lot of resistance writing this piece. I'm very tired right now. Most of you reading this are not in high school, and any of my younger cousins or friends who might be are probably just scrolling on TikTok. You can see how my inner critic is already working against me! That's why it's important to me to challenge myself. I'm determined to write and publish this piece for you anyway.I'm stealing the idea of this list from Austin Kleon, who stole it from Debbie Millman. I listened to his story about it on Millman's podcast this week. Here, I've cobbled together the first six things I wish I had known when I was graduating from high school. That year was 2013, and a lot has changed since then. Instagram existed at the time, but it wasn't widely used. This was years before TikTok, when the first major sex scandal about Jimmy Savile came out, and Oscar Pistorius, the South African sprinter, had just murdered his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.I was finishing up my A-Levels at my incredibly fancy and academically rigorous “secondary school,” Westminster School in London. I had gotten rejected from all the top universities I applied to and was on my way to taking a gap year. I had no idea what I was doing with my life (spoiler, I still have no idea what I am doing now). So, without further ado, this is what I wish I had known at that time.1. Joining me on today's episode of The English Wine Diaries is Richard Balfour-Lynn, co-founder of Balfour Winery in Kent. Following an education at Westminster School and the City of London Business School, Richard set up his first business at 24 years old – his early business interests ranged from Irish linen and lace to medical diagnostic centres and air conditioning companies, all with varying degrees of success and failure. In his late 20s, he began developing high end residential properties across Central London and later progressed into commercial property ranging from office buildings and shopping centres to leisure centres and hotels. During this time he was involved in the running of brands such as Malmaison, Hotel du Vin, DeVere, Liberty and Searcy's. In 2002, Richard and his wife Leslie decided to plant a vineyard in Kent for fun, and eight years later built their first winery on the Hush Heath Estate near Staplehurst in Kent. But, with the huge success of their first wine, Balfour Brut Rosé, what began as a passion project soon became a family business.  Today, Richard and Leslie offer an exceptional guest experience across 400 acres of pristine Kent countryside and within their winery and 200-seater tasting room. They also run the “Hush Heath Hospitality” group comprising a growing number of pubs with boutique hotel rooms across London, Kent and Sussex. You can find out more about Balfour Winery by following @balfourwinery on Instagram or visit balfourwinery.com. Welcoming Susan Glasgow, CEO of Variety New Zealand, to Purposely where she shares her charity's mission to lift children out of poverty and discusses her journey from a fundraiser to the leader of a nonprofit organisation. We will also delve into the captivating origin story of the Variety movement, tracing its beginnings in early 1900s Pittsburgh, USA, to its current role in making a positive impact on young lives globally. Variety New Zealand's vision is clear: all children in Aotearoa should realise their hopes and dreams. With a purpose to raise vital funds to tackle child poverty and create opportunities for children to thrive, Variety has become a cornerstone of support for disadvantaged youth in New Zealand. Variety's roots trace back to 1927 when a group of actors in Pittsburgh took in a child left on their theatre doorstep. This act of kindness sparked the creation of the Variety Club, which soon began fundraising for children in need. Today, Variety operates as a global movement, with each country adapting to local needs while sharing a common goal of supporting disadvantaged children. Established about 35 years ago, Variety New Zealand has evolved from event-based fundraising to a more focused approach. Their flagship programme, Kiwi Kid Sponsorship, matches donors with children living in poverty, providing crucial support where it's needed most. Susan Glasgow, who joined as CEO in 2020, reveals shocking statistics about child poverty in New Zealand: 143,700 children live in poverty (as of June 2023); 1 in 6 kids in New Zealand will suffer food insecurity at some point in their childhood; and 1 in 10 children in the poorest communities doesn't have a bed of their own. Variety New Zealand works closely with initiatives like Healthy Homes, providing beds for children who would otherwise sleep on floors or sofas. They also partner with Sport New Zealand to break down financial barriers preventing children from participating in sports and recreational activities. Glasgow emphasises the resilience and resourcefulness of families living in poverty, challenging the stigma often associated with seeking help. "People who are putting their hands up to ask for help are the ones who are putting their children first," she states. The Kiwi Kid Sponsorship programme has shown significant results. Children sponsored through Variety for four years' experience about 50% less material hardship compared to those on the waitlist. This improvement spans various aspects of life, from school essentials to food security and housing stability. Since Glasgow joined Variety in 2020, the waitlist for sponsorship has grown from 300 to 3,000 children. The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic challenges have exacerbated the need, pushing more families into hardship. Despite these challenges, Variety New Zealand raised over £10 million last year, distributing about £6 million in grants. However, the need continues to outpace available resources. As Variety New Zealand continues its vital work, Glasgow and her team remain committed to raising awareness about child poverty and the transformative power of sponsorship. They strive to bridge the gap between those who have and those who have less, ensuring every child in New Zealand can reach their full potential. Susan Glasgow's journey to becoming CEO of Variety New Zealand is a testament to the power of diverse experiences. With a background in performing arts and literature, Glasgow spent 12 years in the UK, where she transitioned into fundraising at Westminster School. Returning to New Zealand in 2007, she applied her expertise at the University of Auckland Business School before joining Variety in 2020. Her role as CEO combines her fundraising acumen with her passion for helping children access opportunities, a cause she had personally supported as a Variety Kiwi Kid sponsor since 2016. Andrew studied political science (M.A.) and law (LL.B.) at university and then joined the federal civil service to pursue a career in public policy. What drew to you to writing your book about boarding school? In writing your book you talk about the history of boarding school. What did you learn about the tradition of boarding?Having been brought up in Canada what was it like being in a British boarding school. How much of a culture shock was it for you? What was the number one thing that stood out to you about boarding? Both positive and negative. What was the long separation from your parents like for you?You mention having a big emotional release after watching an interview with Nick Duffell. Buckingham Palace has released more information about King Charles III's Coronation on 6 May at Westminster Abbey. The composers, conductors, and performers who will fill the Abbey with music have been announced. In keeping with his plan to modernize the Coronation Service, The King has commissioned twelve new pieces of music. There will be six orchestral pieces, five choral pieces, and one organ piece. Sir Anthony Pappano, currently the Music Director for the Royal Opera House, has been charged with conducting the Coronation Orchestra. The orchestra is composed of musicians that have played in orchestras that fell under Charles's patronage as Prince of Wales. Andrew Lloyd Webber, the composer behind the world-famous musicals The Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Cats, has composed a new coronation anthem. Lloyd Webber explained, "My anthem includes words slightly adapted from Psalm 98. I have scored it for the Westminster Abbey choir and organ, the ceremonial brass and orchestra. I hope my anthem reflects this joyful occasion." ' Patrick Doyle, the Scottish composer who has scored several films including Murder on the Orient Express (2017) and Brave (2012), has composed a new Coronation March. Doyle's new composition draws on musical themes from several different Commonwealth nations. The Royal Harpist, Ms Alis Huws, will be performing in the Coronation Orchestra, as well. Charles appointed Ms Huws as his official harpist as Prince of Wales in 2019. To emphasize the importance of his continued relationship with Wales, part of the liturgy will be performed in Welsh. Several different choirs will be taking part in the Coronation Service. The Choir of Westminster Abbey, The Choir of His Majesty's Chapel Royal, St James's Palace, girl choristers from the Chapel Choir of Methodist College, Belfast and from Truro Cathedral Choir, The Ascension Choir, and The King's Scholars of Westminster School will all be performing parts of the Service.

Many eccentric geniuses have written about cricket, and indeed played it. Few have been as eccentric as Major Rowland Bowen – or had his genius. In 1970, after years of dedicated research (not all his own) he published Cricket: A History of its growth and development throughout the world. Long out of print, it is still unmatched in its global sweep, its presentation of arcane facts, and its insurrectionary daring (which delighted C L R James) in overturning almost sacred cricketing myths. It riled the cricketing Establishment of its day, especially those seeking to defend white supremacy.Russell Jackson is an award-winning Australian author and journalist. He became fascinated by Bowen and his contribution to cricket history. He has now inherited from the late Murray Hedgecock the daunting task of reviving Bowen's work and making sense of his extraordinary life, as he explains to Peter Oborne and Richard Heller as the guest on their latest cricket-themed podcast.Russell speculates about the motives behind Bowen's very personal and cantankerous crusade for the truth in cricket history. His career had echoes of John Le Carré: he was the son of a disgraced solicitor and served in Intelligence. In spite of family financial problems he attended Westminster School in the 1920s and was noted early as a cricket obsessive although not noted as a player. At seventeen, he became a member of the MCC (thanks to an influential proposer. Already a natural contrarian, he read cricket literature copiously and decided that almost all of it needed challenge and correction by himself. His actual trigger was Roy Webber, the leading scorer, who was the authority for a wrong fact on a quiz show. It inspired a lifetime's war for his view of the truth in cricket. To achieve an outlet for this, he eventually founded his own subscription-only journal Cricket Quarterly in 1963. He had a habit of quarrelling violently with subscribers, striking them off, and rejecting new ones for fear that they were the old ones trying to sneak up on him under assumed names. This business model is not normally recommended to publishers, but CQ survived for 32 issues until 1971 and produced a highly influential corpus of work as the basis for his history. With its book it deserves a full re-issue.The undismissed subscribers formed a global network of amateur cricket historians and statisticians. Bowen was astute enough to enlist them as volunteer contributors of obscure local materials which he needed. Peter Hain was among them, and submitted to a volley of demands. He said that his only supporters for stopping the apartheid tour of 1970 in the world of cricket were John Arlott, David Sheppard – and Bowen.Russell suggests that Bowen's central mission was to correct the established Anglocentric history of cricket with its almost exclusive focus on first-class matches. He stressed especially the long success of American cricket and the impact of its exclusion from the Imperial Cricket Conference in 1911.Financial pressures drove Bowen into the army. He served first in India and then in Intelligence in London in the 1950s as a map and topographical analyst. His main achievement was to be the first to detect the Soviet missiles which provoked the Cuban crisis of 1962.Continue reading here: https://chiswickcalendar.co.uk/episode-115-the-weird-genius-who-revolutionized-cricket-history/Get in touch with us by emailing obornehellercricket@outlook.com, we would love to hear from you!

How do you decide if you need a Family Office? What goes into building one that will truly serve your family's needs? What role does intentionality play in its design and success? Listen as our guest shares with us how a commitment to shared values created a need for a Family Office to steward his family's resources in a way that impacts not only generations of family members, but an entire community, as well, and how communication and clarification of objectives helps maintain trust, respect, and good dynamics within the family.  Rob McLaughlin worked his way from District Sales Manager to Senior VP of Sales and Marketing in Advance Food Company, the business his father David co-founded in 1973.   When the family sold a majority interest, they recognized a need for a more formalized structure to manage the assets, and Rob stepped up to lead what became Square Deal Capital to steward the family's assets after the sale. Rob earned a BBA in Marketing from Texas Christian University's Neeley School of Business. He has served on the boards of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and Westminster School and currently serves on the boards of Watermark Bank, i2E Management Company, the McLaughlin Family Foundation, and Young Presidents Organization OKC. Rob enjoys escaping to the mountains with his family and watching and playing sports with his sons. He and his wife Chrissy live in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, with their sons, Michael & Kyle. How do we be more on purpose, and less on point and create learning with rigour but not rigidity? How do we elevate voice, choice and initiative knowing that as we do so we create more freedom and more responsibility? In this fifth episode of our 10-part special series on Learner Agency we discuss how students bring agency to life. This is the fifth lesson for agency shared by global education expert Charlie Leadbeater in conversation with educators from three different schools across South Australia. In our conversation we blend the conceptual with the concrete, exploring philosophy, practice and product and hear how schools have journeyed towards activating agency in their community. Three brilliant teachers join us for our conversation today: Nathan Grierson of Bethany Christian School, Eleanor Waterford of Mt Barker Waldorf School, and Andrea Sherwood of Westminster School. We discuss what purposeful learning looks like and how identity meets intent - when who we are powerfully intersects with what we want to achieve. As our educator colleagues share their learning journeys, both inner and outer, we discuss the connection between values and achievement, how they endure and evolve, and how if we connect purpose, commitment, and reflection we can create high agency learning experiences that lead to increased growth and mastery. This series is a special collaboration between The Learning Future and AISSA: The Association of Independent Schools of South Australia. Each of these ten podcast episode correspond to one of 10 lessons on Learning Agency from the soon to be published Centre for Strategic Education Paper authored by Charlie LeadBeater. We hope you enjoy our conversation, teacher buy in.See more: https://www.ais.sa.edu.au/events/student-agency-lab-three-year-project/ Transcript available upon request. Charles Wesley was born just before Christmas in 1707. When he was eight years old, he was taken to London to attend Westminster School. At age thirteen, he became a King's Scholar at Westminster. Upon graduating, he enrolled at Oxford. He was nineteen and full of life. He later said, "My first year at college I lost in diversions." At age 31, he wrote, "I now found myself at peace with God, and rejoiced in hope of loving Christ. I saw that by faith I stood." At about the same time he wrote in his journal, "I began a hymn upon my conversion." We aren't certain which hymn he meant, but many historians think it was "And Can It Be," because of the vivid testimony of verse 4: Long my imprisoned spirit lay, Fast bound in sin and nature's night; My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

As David Attenborough says: “An understanding of the natural world and what's in it is a source of not only a great curiosity but great fulfillment.” Erfan Firouzi believes that until people understand how the natural works, they won't pay time or care about it. "We need to understand, to care and care, to save." Erfan has also learned that the natural world is dramatically fragile, yet if given the chance and care it can recover beyond our imagination, and since then he has been working extra hard, by creating documentaries, organizing online classes which teach young people about the natural world and “Nature Talks” where he talks with scientists and biologist regarding saving our beautiful planet. His website is a testament to his lifelong commitment to spreading awareness to younger generations by getting them closer to the natural world with the help of his preserved zoology and botany specimens. In this episode we discussed the connection between Architecture and Faith, by talking to three historians, writers and heritage professionals about new approaches to considering the history of buildings used by communities of faith. Religious architecture has always been central to architectural history, because human societies have always been inspired to build beautiful and high status buildings as part of their religious practices. However in this conversation we addressed new ways of talking about religious architecture: examining what they might have meant to the communities that built them, exploring the avenues for adaptation and retention of religious buildings in a changing society and talking about how marginalised communities have created spaces for religious worship. This new financial tool enables qualifying homeowners to get a cash lump sum from their home equity with no monthly payments, no interest and no added debt. A Home Equity Agreement is an equity based solution - it's not a reverse mortgage, it's not a loan and it's not a line of credit. Instead of charging interest, they take a share of the current equity together with a share of the appreciation if the value of the home goes up. As promised, Gabriela Duran's interview is now available in English as well (available in Spanish on this platform). Thank you to Westminster School and Dr. Estefania Olid's Translation class for making this episode possible. We wanted to bring Gabriela's words and thoughts to our English-speaking audiences, so this episode is a reading of the translated interview transcripts. Our Director of Development Natalia Garzón is reading Gabriela's dialogue and she invited her friend Juliana Arosemena to read the interviewer's part. We want to clarify that we took into consideration both racial and gender representation in the recording of this reading, and want to reiterate that the sole purpose of this is to bring our listeners closer to Gabriela's story. We recently discussed abuse in schools, specifically public boarding schools. We looked at how cases of sexual and physical abuse were still coming to light against teachers or staff despite more stringent safeguarding measures being introduced. We discussed liability and actions available to victims. However, in the last few weeks more and more reports have started to surface regarding abuse of pupils by other pupils in schools, in what has concerningly become dubbed ‘the rape culture’. Westminster School hit the headlines when ex pupils compiled a 21 page dossier of rape culture claims. The claims document how female pupils were harassed and abused on a daily basis, having been forced to perform sex acts on male pupils. Further allegations included teachers buying a sex toy for a pupil. A number of other disturbing allegations included projecting images of female pupils on the whiteboard and asking teachers if they would “smash or not”. Victims disclosed how alcohol was used to intoxicate students by other students to enable them to rape them. Other allegations including having trousers pulled down in front of others, groping, harassment and rape. Younger pupils were deemed “fresh meat” by older pupils and sixth formers. Highgate School has commissioned an immediate external review after a number of pupils walked out of the school, after allegations that the rape culture was tolerated by staff. The school has been criticised for not investigating or acting on allegations of abuse. Dulwich school pupils planned a protest march which was cancelled due to the current COVID-19 pandemic following a report in The Times of over 100 accounts of sexual abuse at the school. A number of other schools have also been linked to similar allegations including St Pauls; Eton; and Latymer Upper School. Many of the named schools have now commenced internal investigations. England’s children commissioner, Rachel de Souza, has now stated that serious claims of sexual violence and harassment in schools must be reported to police in a response. Ofsted have also confirmed they will look to investigate. Maybe if mandatory reporting was in place such a call would not be necessary? An online campaign called 'Everyone's Invited' has now also been set up to encourage users to post anonymous testimonies of the abuse they have suffered at school. All schools are expected to have sufficient safeguarding procedures to prevent abuse. If a school employee (such as a teacher) has committed abuse, it is possible to make a civil claim against the individual’s employer on the basis of vicarious liability if it can be established that the abuse occurred during the course of employment or in a relationship akin to employment. When abuse is committed by another pupil this becomes more complicated, especially if they are also a minor. Whether a successful claim could be brought against the school would depend on the facts of the individual case. If the school had been informed of complaints of ongoing sexual abuse/or witnessed this and failed to step in/prevent such, the school in question may be deemed liable in a civil claim. Building equity in your home unlocks massive leverage and cash flow, but thanks to an antiquated system, very few people ever get to put that to use.    With $17.8 trillion of equity in single family homes, and 14.7 million homeowners with 50% or more in equity, this is a huge untapped asset class that’s right in front of us. Most people think the only way to leverage their equity is through a traditional bank loan, which they shy away from because it involves assuming more debt with monthly repayments. Fortunately there is a better way.    Equity-based financing allows us to access cash without eroding the upside with monthly payments. The idea is to make the equity in our homes work for us so we can actually live a better life and have more passive income, without the burden of structured debt.   How is this model different from the traditional model of borrowing on your equity from the bank? What is the difference between good debt and bad debt? How can we use our equity to improve our lives and reach more of our financial goals?    In this episode, I’m joined by serial entrepreneur, author, founder and CEO of QuantmRE, Matthew Sullivan. He shares how his company helps people take advantage of home equity with less downside, and what working with Richard Branson taught him about business. Three Things You’ll Learn In This Episode Debt-based financing vs. equity-based financing The biggest issue with unlocking the equity in your home is that we can traditionally only do it by taking on more debt and eroding our wealth in the process. An equity-based model takes a different approach because the investors are partners in the ownership of your home, rather than lenders, so you don’t lose your base equity.   How some people are able to predict economic shifts and downturns For many people, the occurrences of this year have been a shock and seem to have come out of nowhere. When it comes to the economy, things are not truly unprecedented if we know the signs to look for. If we observe the trends and shifts of the past, we will see faint signals of what’s going to happen in the future.   Why small private funds are an easier way to access money for deals Regulation D and Regulation S exemptions are fund structures that someone can get started with quickly. The regulatory burden of this fund is very light, making it a great wealth building vehicle even for people who are just starting out.   Guest Bio- Matthew Sullivan is a serial entrepreneur and founder and CEO of QuantmRE. Metaphysical Theater Presents John Locke John Locke ; 29 August 1632 – 28 October 1704) was an English philosopher and physician, widely regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers and commonly known as the "Father of Liberalism". Considered one of the first of the British empiricists, following the tradition of Sir Francis Bacon, he is equally important to social contract theory. His work greatly affected the development of epistemology and political philosophy. His writings influenced Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, many Scottish Enlightenment thinkers, as well as the American revolutionaries. His contributions to classical republicanism and liberal theory are reflected in the United States Declaration of Independence. Locke's theory of mind is often cited as the origin of modern conceptions of identity and the self, figuring prominently in the work of later philosophers such as David Hume, Rousseau, and Immanuel Kant. Locke was the first to define the self through a continuity of consciousness. He postulated that, at birth, the mind was a blank slate or tabula rasa. Contrary to Cartesian philosophy based on pre-existing concepts, he maintained that we are born without innate ideas, and that knowledge is instead determined only by experience derived from sense perception. This is now known as empiricism. An example of Locke's belief in empiricism can be seen in his quote, "whatever I write, as soon as I discover it not to be true, my hand shall be the forwardest to throw it into the fire." This shows the ideology of science in his observations in that something must be capable of being tested repeatedly and that nothing is exempt from being disproven. Challenging the work of others, Locke is said to have established the method of introspection, or observing the emotions and behaviours of one’s self. The dean of the college at the time was John Owen, vice-chancellor of the university. Although a capable student, Locke was irritated by the undergraduate curriculum of the time. He found the works of modern philosophers, such as René Descartes, more interesting than the classical material taught at the university. Through his friend Richard Lower, whom he knew from the Westminster School, Locke was introduced to medicine and the experimental philosophy being pursued at other universities and in the Royal Society, of which he eventually became a member. Locke was awarded a bachelor's degree in February 1656 and a master's degree in June 1658. He obtained a bachelor of medicine in February 1675, having studied medicine extensively during his time at Oxford and worked with such noted scientists and thinkers as Robert Boyle, Thomas Willis, Robert Hooke and Richard Lower. In 1666, he met Lord Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, who had come to Oxford seeking treatment for a liver infection. Cooper was impressed with Locke and persuaded him to become part of his retinue. Locke had been looking for a career and in 1667 moved into Shaftesbury's home at Exeter House in London, to serve as Lord Ashley's personal physician. In London, Locke resumed his medical studies under the tutelage of Thomas Sydenham. Sydenham had a major effect on Locke's natural philosophical thinking – an effect that would become evident in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding. Locke's medical knowledge was put to the test when Shaftesbury's liver infection became life-threatening. Locke coordinated the advice of several physicians and was probably instrumental in persuading Shaftesbury to undergo surgery (then life-threatening itself) to remove the cyst. S

Bursaries Help Less 'Well Off' Parents Send Children to Private Education

How to get bursaries and assisted places for top private schools The gift of education is one of the most valuable things you can give to your children. However, the cost of sending a child or grandchild to an independent or private (strangely, also known as a “public school”) school has soared well above the rate of inflation, yet the number of UK pupils in private education has never been higher. Why is this? Part of the answer is that more than £1bn a year of financial assistance is available to parents, enabling one in three students to have their school fees reduced or even waived, according to the FT. School fees have become a major problem for the middle classes in recent years. The cost of a private education is nearly 50% higher than a decade ago, according to data from the Independent Schools Council (ISC). Average fees for day pupils are now nearly £4,800 per term, or just over £14,000 a year. Fees are higher in the Southeast and London, where boarding school fees now average more than £13,000 a term — close to £40,000 per year, according to the ISC. Scholarships and bursaries have become a key factor in affordability, but many parents may not be aware of the level of help available. For instance, at some schools, parents who apply for means-tested support could qualify even if they have a household income of £90,000. Competition for the brightest children means that an increasing amount of assistance is being provided on a “needs blind” basis to pupils with a flair for particular subjects, such as music and sports. My Son won a music scholarship and bursary, which covered part of the fees, and a government assisted place scheme, which was later abolished by the Tony Blair government. The strict application criteria will vary for each school, but typically with a high level of financial disclosure required to obtain means-tested funding. Schools reject assistance requests from parents who own second homes or expensive properties. If the school senses parents could afford to pay the fees by downsizing their home, or asking grandparents for help, they will say so. Independent schools need to justify their charitable status, which has encouraged more generosity in the form of scholarships and means-tested bursaries. The ISC says that £800m of the £1bn provided in “fee assistance” last year came directly from the schools themselves. Over 175,000 ISC students currently enjoy some form of fee reduction, around half of these through means testing. The number of those receiving “free” fully paid places more than 6,000 pupils, an increase of 5 per cent year-on-year. Parents of children who win a scholarship can often also apply for a bursary — often referred to as an “assisted place”. In addition to help with school fees, financial help may be granted towards the cost of expensive uniforms, sports equipment, laptops, trips and other travel costs. The vast majority of this kind of financial assistance is directed at UK families, but many parents do not know how to access the increased funding. “Believe it or not, it’s quite a challenge for independent schools to get applications from the families for whom their bursaries are intended — gifted children from low-income families,” says Catherine Stoker, managing director of Independent Education Consultants, which advises parents on choosing the right school. “Scholarships and bursaries are certainly one of the most ‘searched for’ items on our website,” she says. “Parents often call us for advice on how to secure bursaries — it’s a confusing area. Parents who would be eligible often lack the confidence to call their local independent school and inquire about how to apply. Sometimes they don’t know bursaries exist.” In general, schools will seek to ascertain the “relevant income” — the gross household income less an amount of between £2,000 and £3,000 per dependent child. Having relevant income of £20,000 or less would usually qualify for full fees to be paid, but some schools will provide funding on a sliding scale of up to £90,000. Despite the fact that sending a child to a private school saves the state money, not everyone is happy that the children of relatively well-off middle class families are benefiting from charity. The Labour Party pledged to remove the VAT exemption on private school fees, and could go further by scrapping business rates relief which is granted to independent schools owing to their charitable status. The headmaster of the prestigious Stowe School said middle-class families who could have afforded to pay for private education a generation ago were now being “squeezed out because of affordability”. Assisted places are usually awarded for a set period when a pupil joins a school at the age of 11, although many schools offer specific bursaries to sixth-form entrants. Last year, £420m was provided in means-tested, as opposed to merit-based, fee assistance for pupils at ISC schools; an increase of nearly £160m since 2011. Special bursaries are available for pupils whose parents are in the armed forces, Church of England clergy, or who work for independent schools. There can also be favourable terms for second and subsequent siblings attending a school. As a parent, you will need to do your homework, researching the websites of the schools and applying early. Pupils will normally sit an entrance exam and many parents prepare them for this by taking them to extracurricular classes and cramming schools specialising in helping pupils pass. Top schools like Westminster School, founded in 1560 and earning its royal charter from Elizabeth I for offering help to 40 poor scholars, donate millions to help poorer children. Westminster currently allocates £1.4m a year to bursaries and these can pay up to the full fees of £29,709 per year, plus uniform, equipment and other school expenditure. Its website advises parents: “There are no exact financial criteria for bursaries but in judging a family’s needs, all income, essential expenditure, and all assets in savings, investments and property will be assessed. Where, for example, a home is considered to be too large, in an expensive area or where excess equity could be released, a family may be expected to downsize or remortgage as necessary to release funds. It is also expected that savings in shares, Isas, other investments and equity in second homes will be released. The school will then assess what level of bursary (between 10 per cent and 100 per cent of the fees) is needed.” Where parents live can also give children access to financial help as some bursaries were set up to benefit specific communities. At Harrow School, where Winston Churchill studied, pupils who have lived in London boroughs, including Barnet, Brent, Camden, City of London, Ealing or Hammersmith, for more than two years may be eligible for financial help from the John Lyons Foundation.   The choice of royalty, Eton College, charges boarding fees of more than £42,000pa, but more than one in five pupils receive some form of financial assistance. The school, whose alumni includes countless prime ministers (David Cameron and Boris Johnson), Prince William and Prince Harry, will spend £6.5m this year to support 273 of its 1,300 pupils. The average bursary covers two-thirds of school fees. “We are proud of our bursary and scholarship provision which last year saw 74 boys receiving 100 per cent fee remission and a further 208 boys receiving a range of financial assistance,” says the college. Eton aims to support one in four pupils in future, and is able to fund this from the school’s own resources and donations from its powerful network of alumni. The son of a Windsor pharmacist won a scholarship to pay the full boarding fees for his education at Eton. His father said: “Applying for the scholarship was very easy indeed, he told the FT. The information was readily available on Eton’s website. “At the time, so long as your child was under 10 years of age and had not been to a fee-paying school, you just had to contact Eton and ask to come and sit the scholarship test. “On the day, there were, I think, around 200 or so other children sitting it. It was a week or so before we were notified that they wanted him to come back again. At this follow-up day, there were around 6-10 children called back and they were involved in discussions rather than actual tests. Our son was offered a junior scholarship a few days later.” The income of both parents was assessed and Eton covered all the school fees. “We supplied a detailed list of our income and expenses and Eton then set a contribution level.” The parents paid “a small contribution each term” of around £750 plus any expenses such as dinners, laundry, and society subscriptions. “Our son got A star and A grades in everything, plus a clutch of school awards and went on to read English at Cambridge.” Word of the Day Hedge Fund A hedge fund is an official partnership of investors who pool money together to be guided by professional management firms, not unlike a mutual fund. A hedge fund manager raises money from outside investors and then invests it according to whatever strategy he or she has promised to use. There are hedge funds that specialise in "long-only" equities, meaning they only buy common stock and never sell short. There are hedge funds that engage in private equity, which is the buying of entire privately held businesses, often taking them over, improving operations, and later sponsoring an initial public offering. There are hedge funds that trade junk bonds. There are hedge funds that specialise in property and real estate. There are even hedge funds that put money to work in specialised asset classes such as patents and music rights. In other words, unlike a Mutual Fund or Unit Trust, hedge funds can invest in just about anything. There are more examples and practical steps to getting rich and being happy in my book, Yes, money can buy happiness, I cover the 3 R’s of Money Management, the Money B.E.L.I.E.F System and much more. P.T. Barnum, Ivy Lee, Arthur Page, Eddie Bernays: the fathers of public relations. American, white, males. And then there’s the history of PR presented often as a linear, constant improvement, englighting…from manipulation and propaganda, to public information, to symmetrical communication, from corporations opposing activists and investigative journalists and calling them names like muckrakers to listening to them, collaborating with them and embedding their demands. What is this PR history teaching us? Are we missing anyone? Out guest today will help us find some answers. Dr Michaela O’Brien used to work in strategic communications and consultancy roles for nonprofits including Amnesty International, the British Library, Business in the Community, Carers UK and the Refugee Council before she joined academia. She is now heading the Westminster School of Media and Communication at the University of Westminster (that is overseeing about 21 undergraduate and post-graduate programmes to you and I), leading their master’s program in Media, Campaigning and Social Change at Westminster and hosting their Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI). Nathaniel Schooler 0:23 Today I'm interviewing Chrissie Lightfoot and she's a legal futurist And CEO of Entrepreneur Lawyer Ltd and CEO of Robot Lawyer Lisa; a tool that you can use to create contracts and NDAs. You don't even need to use a real lawyer! She's been mentioned as a cool vendor in AI for small and medium sized businesses by Gartner Inc. She has won all sorts of awards in Entrepreneur Magazine, as a top 10 lawyer turned entrepreneur adviser to the board of the Telegraph's digital enterprise network. Her blog was selected by Feed Spot as one of the top 50 entrepreneur blogs on the web. She's an honorary visiting fellow at the University of Westminster School of Law on AI and robots in law. In this really interesting episode, we talked about entrepreneurial thinking and entrepreneurial skills; key really for actually staying away from being disrupted by technology which is happening fast. Nathaniel Schooler Hi there Chrissie, it's lovely to speak with you after this all this time; I am really interested to learn more about the Robot Lawyer Lisa. Which is from what I understand an AI powered contract creation tool right? Chrissie Lightfoot 2:02 Yeah, absolutely. Nathaniel it's first of all, great to speak with you after so long. But yes, essentially you've got it, Robot Lawyer Lisa is the world's first impartial AI lawyer, we branded her and we've given her personality. So she has her own Twitter stream, YouTube and Facebook. We built a system whereby lay people and business people can create documents between themselves. So there's no need for any human system involvement whatsoever. It's done in a way that is unique. We're the first company to go to market where the system works totally bilaterally and is transparent, hence being impartial. So its objective as well. So two people can use the system and they're educated and made aware of the legal and commercial nuances of what's involved in the particular legal contract. So, we've had a lot of interest. I mean, the flagship tool, our MVP went to market back in beta mode in November 2016 and was launched April 2017 after feedback. It is being used now in about 80 countries worldwide. So we're very pleased with the take-up. What it does tell us is that there is a real need and demand for this type of product, this bilateral product, but it's a completely new way for users to behave. And certainly from a supplier perspective, it's been a good learning curve for us. Having to be agile and respond to our customers needs and demands as to how they're feeling about using it. We were talking to customers and they identified the contracts that would be really useful in this day and age and how people live and work is going to automatically in the next decade or two. So we focused in on creating some property contract tools. So we've done a lodger agreement; a short-hold tenancy agreement, also known as a residential lease and the commercial lease as well. So we are particularly focusing on helping the mass market and majority of people who have been neglected by traditional law firms and solicitors and bringing cheaper, easier, faster more efficient quality product to the marketplace. The feedback has been fantastic and we're just moving into first sales territory with distribution channels, ie. bigger companies, the end users are lay people or small businesses, we're quite pleased with how the company is progressing. In this day and age, you've got to be very entrepreneurial, and being able to flex and adapt and where you thought the market might be, or how you go to market. We've had to assess it, each corner, in each turn and deflect and where we failed in some areas, we've picked up on that and learned and tried new areas. And eventually, we found our sweet spots. It's taken 18 months or so from getting some initial product out there, testing it, piloting it, working with the design and fitting in with the normal trend of how people; the customers are ...

Recently, I had the opportunity to meet Seymor Segnit, the host of the new crowdfunding podcast, The Kickass Crowdfunding Show. He’s a delightful Brit now living in New York. He’s also been successful in many other arenas, including as an inventor who launched via crowdfunding on Indiegogo. More about thingCHARGER: thingCHARGER is an awesome, simple new charger design which Seymour & his wife Amy invented one day while frustrated with all the messy wires and chargers at their home. A few months later they launched it on Indiegogo and it quickly became the most successful crowdfunded mobile accessory of all time! Delighted with and grateful for the response to their own campaign and wanting to help others succeed at crowdfunding they’ve now launched The Kickass Crowdfunding Show - available on iTunes, YouTube and KickassCrowdfunding.com - to speak with the most interesting people in crowdfunding today and gleen the secrets we can all use to have amazing campaigns. Seymour’s bio: While fiddling with a mess of wires trying to charge the family’s collection of phones, iPads and a Kindle recently, Seymour had a simple idea for a new kind of charger… made a film describing it and put the idea on Indiegogo.com to see if anyone would like it. thingCHARGER raised $647,000 to become the all-time #1 crowdfunded mobile accessory and is now in final development for production. Born in 1963, Seymour grew up in London where he went to Westminster School the ancient institution in the shadow of Westminster Abbey (and just a stone’s throw from the Houses of Parliament.) After studying Engineering at Oxford University he worked for two of the world’s largest advertising agencies before a stint as a ski guide & host in the Alps, then submitted to the siren call of broadcasting and worked in British radio for several years, including 12 months at the mighty 95.8 Capital FM London. Born both a British and US citizen, Seymour moved to California in 1997 where he co-founded Bizfinity, a VC-funded Silicon Valley Web 1.0 “start-up that went belly-up”. After training in NLP in 2002 he founded CTRN: Change That’s Right Now, an organization that helps folks around the world to overcome serious fears and phobias. CTRN has now served thousands of customers in, at last count, 73 countries. His self-help program Vanquish Fear & Anxiety is widely acclaimed. Seymour and his beloved wife Amy live an hour north of Manhattan in an old brick house overlooking the Hudson River with their younger daughter (coincidentally also named Hudson) and occasionally their older daughter Nina.
